That's the rule enforced by owner Charles Wang.  If you don't sign before training camp you'll sit the entire year.  Thus in the next couple of days Brock Nelson must sign a contract offered by the Islanders however his agent hasn't heard from them for the last 6 weeks.

"We haven't heard from them in six weeks," Salcer told Newsday. "[islanders general manager] Garth [snow] and I talked six weeks ago after they made an offer, which was nowhere near commensurate with what players like Brock are making. Garth said he'd get back to me and that was it. No negotiations whatsoever."

Nelson's agent rejected the qualifying offer and the Islanders have offered a two-year deal that, according to  agent Salcer, is not a fair contract.

Other similar players that have received offers include:

  • Mikael Granlund got two years and $6 million from the Wild Alex
  • Galchenyuk got two years and $5.6 million from the Canadiens
  • Mika Zibanejad received two years and $5.25 million from the Senators
  • Elias Lindholm got two years and $5.4 million from the Hurricanes.

So what is Brock Nelson worth?

2 years @ $2,75M ??

If they enforce it this year, they will regret it. Brock/Strome were a pretty damn good 2nd duo.

The agent going public with the fact that he has not heard from them in 6 weeks in this case is probably a good thing.

Charles Wang has such a great track record as an owner, this rule just HAS to make sense right?

No, wait. Wang is a dope. In fact all teams with these stupid "rules" are dopes - like the Sabres old "no negotiating in season" rule that gave up their ONLY advantage in retaining FAs and they lot Briere and Drury because of it.

And, while I'm at it, the whole "terms of the deal were not disclosed per team policy." THE TERMS ARE GOING TO BE DISCLOSED WITHIN DAYS IF NOT HOURS PER LEAGUE POLICY.

But, cak to the topic at hand.

Wang is a terrible owner and a moron.

Brock played for Hakstol at the University of North Dakota. He was a bit of a late bloomer.

in his first full NHL season he had 14 goals....12 assists for 26 pts in 72 games for the Islanders....

Last season he played all 82 games and improved to 20 goals....22 assists and 42 pts.

I see no reason why the upward trajectory would change....I can see something close to a 26 goal, 30 assist 56 point season. A lot of that is dependant on his linemates, but whoever he is playing with, if it's on the top 3 lines, he will have quality wingers.
