Never to soon to start talking about the up and coming prospects for the 2016 NHL Amateur Draft in June 2016. Of course this list will probably change drastically over the course of the next 6 months or so, but it is at least an obvious starting point.

I am hoping to have all discussion about prospects in one spot. I am also hoping this thread will become a great reference point when discussing individual teams draft needs. so without further adieu........

Some good resourcess:

Top 2016 Draft Prospects:

#1 Auston Matthew – RW/C – Zurich ZSC Lions (NLA)

Arizona-born forward who has size, speed and scoring ability and has displayed it since he was 16 years of age with dominant performances against older juniors. Uses his size and smarts to dominate. If he had been born two days earlier, he would have been the third selection in 2015. A mature player who displays a high skill set, powerful skating feet, and a bigger frame that allows him to make space and breach the offensive zone. Defensively responsible. The NHL players he has scrimmaged with have took notice of his puck-handling, passing, shot and possession skills. He isn’t much an aggressive edging player, but uses his size much like Jonathan Toews uses his size to game advantage. Has played centre and can also easily be projected as a right wing. Clearly the best prospect in the class. --Bill Placzek

“Matthews plays a great two-way game with some very exciting offensive characteristics,” says International Scouting Services scout Matt Grainda. “He has the confidence, poise and toughness to try just about anything. He controls the play each time he’s on the ice and possesses fantastic skill moves that help him create separation in 1-on-1 situations. He’s got explosive skating and really great situational hockey sense.”

"[Jones] is a strong power forward who possesses great speed and acceleration, has a heavy shot and quick hands," Ryan said. "He loves to drive the net and challenge defenders physically and is a nightmare for defenders below the hash marks in the offensive zone."

Damien Cox of Sportsnet (Nov. 18th): "Marc Crawford calls him the "best player in our league." He had 10 goals in 14 games before suffering back injury."

Damien Cox of Sportsnet
(Oct. 14th): "Passed on the NCAA and the WHL to go to Europe and has six goals in first eight games."

ISS Hockey - Twitter (Nov. 5th): "Off to great start before minor back injury. Always makes something happen w/puck."

ISS Hockey
- Twitter (Oct. 8th): "Tall, strong, powerful skater w/ good edge control and mobility. Magical hands."

The Hockey News

Ryan Kennedy of The Hockey News (Oct. 30th): "He’s got size, smarts and great offensive production. The fact he’s leading a major European league in goals at 18 is stunning."

Future Considerations (Oct. 14th): "Every pass Matthews makes goes where he wants it to and every shot hits its target. He plays a strong two-way game and just makes everyone on his team better. He is an explosive skater, protects the puck very well and has a lethal wrist shot. He is always one of the most dominant players on the ice and continues to just get better with each viewing."

#2 Jacob Chychrun – D – Sarnia Sting (OHL)

Son of former NHL player, Jeff, plays with a calm demeanor, good feet, lateral agility and physicality. An elite defensive prospect with a tremendous package of talent. already physically developed, he is a terrific skater with a separation gear, and a hard cutting stride and a skating base that lets him protect the puck. Strong wristed and able to stickhandle with precision and accuracy through traffic. His puck smarts and passing ability see him as a future NHL PP guy too. --Bill Placzek

Damien Cox of Sportsnet (Nov. 18th): "Has a great stick and is always in the right spot to deflects a lot of passes. Scouts want to know about the health of his shoulders."

Damien Cox of Sportsnet
(Oct. 14th): "Has recovered from off-season shoulder surgery. Is a physically dominant player with offensive talent."

ISS Hockey - Twitter (Nov. 6th): "What more to say about this elite d-man. Plays 200ft, can skate, & jumps into play."

ISS Hockey
- Twitter (Oct. 9th): "Franchise D who excels on both sides of puck. Pro level puck movement & composure."

The Hockey News

Ryan Kennedy of The Hockey News (Oct. 30th): "The big blueliner has it all. He skates well, plays in all situations and has a nice edge to his game."

Daniel Deschenes of Future Considerations (Oct. 21st): "He has a real shot at making Canada’s World Junior squad this December. Chychrun is no stranger to international competition having represented Canada at the U17 tournament in 2014 as an underage player. He’s a strong skating defenceman with excellent defensive and offensive skills. He picks his spots, moving the puck exceptionally well thanks to his ability to dish crisp passes on the rush and his vision to see these lanes develop."

Future Consideration
(Oct. 14th): "Jakob is a talented defenseman that is both physically gifted and has elite hockey sense. It shows immediately when you see him, but my favourite aspect of his game is what little hesitation he plays with. He just keeps on coming at the other team with different ways to attack."

#3 Matthew Tkachuk – LW – London Knights (OHL)

"[Tkachuk] has elite hockey IQ and vision," NHL Central Scouting's Matt Ryan said. "He makes the players around him better and has a very good scoring touch around the net. He plays inside the dots and is willing to go to the hard areas to score goals. He brings a physical element and is able to get under the skin of his opponents."

Damien Cox of Sportsnet (Nov. 18th): "He's meshing with Mitch Marner on London's top line and has 34 points in 18 games. I'm hearing his younger brother Brady might be even better."

Damien Cox of Sportsnet
(Oct. 14th): "Just like his dad: A prototypical power left winger. Chose the Knights over the University of Notre Dame."

ISS Hockey - Twitter (Nov. 9th): "Oozes w/ offensive size & skill. Not the fastest player but has puck skills."

ISS Hockey
- Twitter (Oct. 11th): "Very smart offensive player. Strong on his skates. Can make plays on rush."

Ryan Kennedy of The Hockey News (Oct. 30th): "Great hockey sense, hands and a big frame have led the OHL rookie to huge points so far."

Future Considerations (Oct. 14th): "Tkachuk a smart, hardworking, gritty, but offensively skilled winger that makes a positive impact on every aspect of the game. Jones, however, is that throw-back style “run you over to get to the puck” type of power winger with a wicked shot that ironically Tkackuk’s father was more known for during his NHL days."

#4 Jesse Puljujarvi – RW – Karpat Oulun(SM-liiga)

Swedish-born Finn with excellent size and skill set.

Damien Cox of Sportsnet (Nov. 18th): "He and countryman Laine are seen as very close. Puljujarvi is smoother, more skilled, more consistent."

Damien Cox of Sportsnet
(Oct. 14th): "Already has a full season in the Finnish league and will form dangerous pair with Laine at the world juniors."

ISS Hockey - Twitter (Nov. 10th): "Improved his defensive game from last season, makes better decisions w/puck. Solid goal scorer."

ISS Hockey
- Twitter (Oct. 12th): "Beats defenders wide w/his powerful stride & good puck protection. Gets the puck on net."

Ryan Kennedy of The Hockey News (Oct. 30th): "With his speed, size and goal-scoring ability, he has been called one of the most terrifying Euro prospects in years."

Future Considerations (Oct. 14th): "Puljujarvi is a smart and elusive player who possesses some very good hands. There is no stopping this kid once he gets moving; a big, powerful skater possesses the speed and puck skills that will make NHL teams drool. Playmaking and finishing ability is elite – he knows when to pass it off with a hard pass on the tape and he knows when he has the time and space to drive the net or take a shot."

#5 Jake Bean – D – Calgary Hitmen (WHL)

Damien Cox of Sportsnet (Nov. 18th): "He was never drafted into major junior, but he's rapidly ascending the NHL rankings and really impressed in the Canada Russia Series."

Damien Cox of Sportsnet
(Oct. 14th): "His father is CFO of NHL Flames. Bean forms dangerous power-play tandem with Flyers 2014 first-rounder Travis Sanheim."

Future Considerations

Zenon Herasymiuk of Future Considerations (Nov. 6th): "It was nice to see Bean rewarded for his strong start to the year with a spot on Team WHL. Bean has continued to impress scouts with his phenomenal hockey sense and uncanny ability to find open teammates through the middle of the ice. He has been unstoppable on the power play with his poise and confidence to make tough plays. If he can put up a good showing at the Canada-Russia Series it could go a long way to proving he has not only the smarts, but the skating ability and strength to compete at the highest level."

Zenon Herasymiuk of Future Considerations (Oct. 19th): "It was nice to see Bean rewarded for his strong start to the year with a spot on Team WHL.Bean has continued to impress scouts with his phenomenal hockey sense and uncanny ability to find open teammates through the middle of the ice. He has been unstoppable on the power play with his poise and confidence to make tough plays.  #6 Tyson Jost – C/ RW – Penticton Vees (BCHL)

Shifty centre with impressive feet and stickhandling ability. Can stickhandle in a phonebooth. Great vison and recognition in the offensive end, so he spreads away from teammates and then pinpoint passes to their sticks on the give and go. Disciplined worker hin his own zone. He knows where to place himself so that the puck can find him. --Bill Placzek

Damien Cox of Sportsnet (Nov. 18th): "The Vees captain has 45 points in 23 games, including 22 goals. A Jonathan Toews-type centre."

Damien Cox of Sportsnet
(Oct. 14th): "Committed to North Dakota and averaging 2.1 points per game."

ISS Hockey - Twitter (Nov. 20th): "Great hockey sense & ability to beat defenders 1 vs 1 w/his speed. Leads Vees w/46 points."

- Twitter (Oct. 23rd): "Great hockey sense & ability to beat defenders 1vs1. Could get BCHL scoring title this year."

ISS Hockey

Damien Cox of Sportsnet
(Oct. 14th): "The Olli Maatta clone was named the top D-man among Finland under-20s."

ISS Hockey - Twitter (Nov. 18th): "Poised rear guard who plays strong defensively & makes smart decisions with the puck."

ISS Hockey
- Twitter (Oct. 21st): "Poised d-man excellent puck-carrier w/ good passing skills. Will only get better."

Future Considerations (Oct. 14th): "He’s a poised minute-muncher with very good size and strength for a young defenseman. He makes excellent plays in the defensive zone, using his stick and body to take pucks away and clear the zone. He does a very nice job of moving the puck, showing a sharp first pass and excellent vision. Understands the game extremely well and also has good mobility. Juolevi’s poise consistently stands out."

#9 Patrik Laine – LW – Tappara Tampere (SM-liiga)

Damien Cox of Sportsnet (Nov. 18th): "The big winger is inconsistent but often impressive. The world juniors will be an interesting test."

Ryan Kennedy of The Hockey News (Oct. 30th): "Finland has its own Taylor vs. Tyler debate with Laine and Puljujarvi. Like the latter, Laine has size and great scoring punch."

Future Considerations (Oct. 14th): "Laine’s game is straight power as he drives into the offensive zone heading straight for the high percentage scoring areas before unloading a heavy wrist or snap shot. He also has the hands to pull off a couple creative dekes to beat a defender with finesse."

#10 Max Jones – LW – London Knights (OHL)

Damien Cox of Sportsnet (Nov. 18th): "He's a big guy who gets involved, goes hard to the net and has some bite in his game. He went goalless in first six OHL games and then was suspended for two."

Damien Cox of Sportsnet
(Oct. 14th): "His father Brad played for three NHL teams. His older brother Mitch played four seasons with Plymouth."

ISS Hockey - Twitter (Nov. 9th): "Gradually learning OHL game. He does it all; big & strong. Runs over people to make play."

Damien Cox of Sportsnet
(Oct. 14th): "Has 13 points in 12 games and was selected to play in next month’s Canada-Russia series."

ISS Hockey
- Twitter (Oct. 20nd): "Complete player always dangerous when he is around the puck; more of a goal scorer."

Future Considerations (Oct. 14th): "[He] is one of the most promising 2016 eligible I’ve seen out of the Q, besides maybe Gauthier, but the race between the two is looking pretty tight. He is physical, and plays the game utilizing a strong drive and his impressive frame. He supports his teammates constantly and wins most battles he engages in. He likes to drive the net and look for pucks in the greasy areas. Has some solid puck skills and offensive creativity that make you excited for what he could become at the next level."

I really like Coxs comment on Sergachev....his game has this natural effortless feel to it, so much so, you swear he's not not trying, but he really is just that calm, cool and composed. Tons of poise.....and man, when he wants to turn on the jets, he leaves people in his wake.

Anyone see the mid season McKenzie 2016 prospect update today?  It was interesting with some highlights of his top 10. I liked the way they compared players to current or retired guys....Matthews was Trottier. What a huge compliment. Trotts is really one of the great underrated players of all time. I had no idea Matthews was so solid all around, cause I don't think they would have used Trotts as a comparision unless he played a fantastic 200 foot game.

Trottts never gets talked about cause he played at the same time as Gretzky and the likes of Mario, Dionne, Yzerman, Sakic just to name a few get much more attention and all are modern players. I think Trotts compares very well with Stan Mikata....if Matthews is anything like Trotts all round....and then add his amazing offense....wow, this kid is gonna make a wicked cornerstone.

McKenzie did mention that Laine is gaining steam, but 7 out of 10 scouts still think Matthews is #1 still. Laine, btw was compared to Tarasenko .....very accurate assessment IMHO and Jesse P, the other Finnish winger was comapred to Wheeler....a big drop down, but again, like the comparison.

Anybody know much about Clayton Keller (US NTDP)?  I have see his name linked with alot of mock drafts for the Flyers.  Here is some info I found.  Again, alot can change from now until draft time.

11. FLYERS: C Clayton Keller (U.S. NTDP): A Mitch Marner clone from the center ice position who is almost single handedly carrying a revamped NTDP. Keller, a hard-working puck magnet with speed and sublime offensice skills, averages close to two points per game to challenge Matthews’ single-season scoring record. Keep on eye on him as we wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if he turned out to have the best NHL career of all his draft-eligible peers.

Philadelphia takes a center again with Alex Nylander off the board. Clayton Keller already has 11 goals, 21 assists, and 32 points in 16 USHL games. Clayton Keller is the best playmaker center in the United States Hockey League. That could land him a spot in the top 10 as Keller will go to Boston University for the fall following the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.Read more at http://www.draftutopia.com/2016nhlmockdraft.html#rGuOyJyA8MqTHtaD.99 - See more at: http://www.draftutopia.com/2016nhlmockdraft.html#sthash.0vnvQ4VO.dpuf

ISS Hockey - Twitter (Oct. 26th): "Offensive dynamo. Excellent speed & creativity, dangerous at top speed."
Damien Cox of Sportsnet (Nov. 18th): "A linemate of Bellows in Plymouth, the new home of U.S. program. He's small, but wonderfully skilled with great vision."

Not really, just that he is small. Some list him at 5'9"

We have lots of little guys. I want bigger. I want Dubois. He's 13th on ISS. We could only dream he will be there at 13th

Agree the Flyers have lots of smaller players.  The Danny Briere's of the world are nice, but I would love to have some skilled players the size of Malkin or Ovie who are not easily knocked off the puck.  Just my two cents........

This article may be the bearer of bad news on the Dubois front, if it's to be believed, it has him trying to sneak into the top 5....

Lot's of other cool info in here also, gleaned from USA Today of all places.....lol

Cheers. That's Kyle Woodlief from Red Line Report. Weird that he writes for USA Today.

As I come to grips with the reality that we won't be drafting Dubois this year I've been more and more interested in Mascherin.

I'd prefer to get a taller forward with out 1st round pick...but what's not to like about a 5'10" 205 lb human bowling ball who can skate like the wind, has a great shot with a quick release, makes great passes and tripled both his goals and assists in one season in the O? He's also good without the puck.

How much have you seen him play?

I took him in a draft two years ago but then threw him back 'cause it didn't look like he was progressing. I knew he was a good powerful skater built like a tank, but it seems from your description and the Woddlief piece that jammer2 posted above, he's gotten considerably faster. I think I will have to re-draft him
