You mean other than Datsyuk going back to Russia?  I suspect there probably won't be a lot of changes because, as we've discussed in other threads, Ken Holland seems to think the team as it is now is good enough to win, they just need pucks to bounce their way, which is not true.  We here in the Red Wings forum feel a lot of things need to change, but chances are, very little will happen this summer.  Mostly if Datsyuk heads back to Russia and hamstrings the Red Wings for $7.5MM.  There's just not a lot of room to do anything...

Well, it depends on:

1. Whether Pavel Datsyuk decides to follow through with leaving for Russia and not returning.

2. If he DOES intend to leave and not return, it will depend on whether Holland can find a team willing to take on his cap hit (there won't likely be cash out) without selling the store.

3. IF Holland is able to do that, I think we may see some changes. If not, our hands are tied.

As @WingNut722 said, us Wings fans on the forum think we are mediocre at best right now, and we feel like substantial changes are needed in order to be competitive. Unfortunately, to some extent, Holland has waited too long on trading Tatar and Nyquist, and we have little hope of dumping either Franzen's or Howard's contracts. We are hoping that Holland can make some moves for better players than aging veterans. What we have is NOT working, and it is time to give our younger players more of a role.

After discussing this more with some other folks over the weekend, I've come to the realization that Datsyuk's destiny is more or less inconsequential to the plan for next season.  If Datsyuk leaves, and the Wings can't trade his contract, we'll be out $7.5MM.  If he stays and plays the last year of his contract, the Wings will be out $7.5MM, and they'll likely get a dozen goals out of it and maybe 30 assists.  Datsyuk is not the man he once was.  His getting older, his ankles are bad, and his heart is 20,000 miles away.  He'll go back to Russia this summer but reluctantly and begrudgingly say "Dos Vedanya" to his beloved daughter to come back to the States for another painful 6 months.  So I say, all things being equal, let the man bow out gracefully.  If there is anyone in a Red Wing uniform this generation who deserves this kind of consideration, it's Pavel Datsyuk.

Nevertheless, Ken Holland should be on the phone right now with Brad Treliving in Calgary offering Howard, Nyquist, Tatar, a bottle of single malt, and a pair of Isotoner slippers for Dougie Hamilton and a draft pick or two.
