This win for the Herd left both teams at 1-1-0 for the weekend and tied for 2nd. The Bisons were awarded 2nd by virtue of the win. Here's the report from the host site:

Manitoba kicked off Saturday's action with a 5-2 victory over the Saskatchewan Huskies, led by Brett Dudar who had two goals and an assist. Daniel Stagg, Brett Stovin and Brett Brooks also found the net in the win.

They also added a blurb on Friday's game:

Also on Friday night, the Dinos dismantled Manitoba, earning a 7-2 win at The Co-opertaors Centre. The Dinos exploded for six unanswered goals over the first 45 minutes thanks to Danny Gayle, Luke Harrison, Mackenzie Colasimone, Chris Collins, Walchuk and Dumonceaux. Stagg and Stovin replied for Manitoba and Robbie Fisher added one more for the Dinos.

It is not likely that I will find a roster link nor stats for either game. Not surprising to see Stovin score in both games, and Dudar closed strong when he plaued two years ago. But Stagg may be a surprise. This would give him 3 goals in 3 games as a walk-on in a camp with 20 forwards. Of course, last weekend's goal was an empty-netter and Friday's goal was once the game was out of hand. Next weekend's roster against Regina should be interesting.

Impressive numbers for Bedrock U. Mr. Slate must be impressed. Without stats it is jard to know how the jumped all over the Bisons. That score seems to be the only anomoly in the tournament.

After hosting a 4-team event last weekend, the Banjo-Cats have the honour of bparding a bus leaving Saskatchewan this weekend. For Regina's new recruits the first road-trip could be an eye-opener. Things like cutlery, toothpaste, colour TV, indoor plumbing, and shoelaces can overwhelm a young hick.

Although ranked 8th in the CW by most people, the Cats should be a huge step up from the Jamestown team the Bisons faced in their other home series.

The Bison roster page is not yet updated for this year, so I don't know if any cuts have been made.

ELSEWHERE

The ACAC starts their schedule so no more interlcok for them. Four teams are off to Edmontown for the Brock Invitational. And in an interesting match-up YBC will host Ryerson. That leaves Lethbridge with a rock in their Halloween bag. Here's the schedule:

Sep 21 Edmonton Oilers Rookies (NHL) at Alberta
Sep 22 Calgary at Mount Royal
Sep 23 Ryerson at U.B.C.
Sep 23 Saskatchewan at Alberta
Sep 24 Calgary v Saskatchewan at Edmonton

Sept 23: Bisons Beat Bumpkins

The Bisons amassed period leads of 3-0 and 5-0 en route to a one-sided pasting of the Banjo-Cats. The game was completely one-sided throughout. The shots were 37-27 with most Regina shots (14) coming in a chippy 3rd period.

The Bisons lined up like this:

Goal
35 Spriggs - 34 Sydora -

Defence
4 Bresciani - 9 Hunter
3 S Christensen - 19 Friesen
20 Johnston - 2 Henry

Forwards
25 Merasty - 28 Stovin - 27 DePape
13 Laurencelle - 10 Dudar - 29 Wasylak
8 Bilton - 24 Augert - 21 Brooks
16 Paradis - 23 Lisoway - 17 Callis

Scratches
G 1 Paulic
D 5 L Christensen - 6 Heinrich
F 12 Zajac - 14 Nault - 15 S Bowles
F 18 Kelly - 22 B Bowles - 23 Schreyer -
F 30 Stagg - ?? St. Croix

Justin Augert scored twice and single goals were scored by Liam Bilton, Brett Brooks, Channing Bresciani, Brett Stovin, Rene Hunter, and Remi Laurencelle. Byron Spriggs started in goal and played the first two periods and Dasan Sydora took over in the 3rd.

Of note, forward Hudson Friesen played defence. I suspected that something like this would happen with so many forwards in camp.

Another note, each player on the 3rd line scored one of the Bisons' first three goals.

The rematch goes Saturday at 1:00 p.m. While this runs opposite the homecoming football game, it is better than anight game which would go head-to-head with the Word Cup semi-final game.

Michael St. Croix - C - Greenville (ECHL)

- This was a new name on the Bison line-ip card. This Winnipeg native once scored 45 goals for Edmonton in the WHL and was then drafted by the Rangers and played 3 seasons in the ECHL with a pitstop in the AHL. Looks like a redshirt.

The Rambos are no doubt enjoying a road-trip to British California. Too bad for them their sole accomplishment on the night was spoiling a shut-out mid-way through the 3rd period whilst trailing 4-0. This makes the Birdies 4-0-0 in the pre-season. The teams meet again on Saturday.

My son and I arrived just after face-off but had to leave early because he wasn;t feelinh well. Unfortunately, the Saturday game was not updated on LeagueStat. And the schedule link does not list scorers as of this post.

The Kittems were a much stronher opponent in the 1st period. They at least looked like a team that belonhed in the league. The goal was scored by #6, but I had a hard time catching the announcement and it did not sound like "Heinrich". Hopefully I will obtain some information soon.

The Bisons are now off to Grand Forks next weekend and Thunder Bay the weekend after for non-conference games. They then open the season at home against Mount Royal on October 14-15.

Both of these games were part of the Brick Ombiyayional in Edmontown. All I know of the opener is the score and that on the pre-season the Bedrock Boys are 3-1-0 and the Mutts fall to 1-2-1.

The nightcap was for the title and as I post only Twitter adds detail. The Blue Cats were outshot by the Monkeys 34-28.

MRU therefore takes the title, going 2-0-0. Alberta and Calgary go 1-1-0 and Sask pu;;s up the rear at 0-1-1.

The Bisons are off on their (almost) annual trek to Grand Forks. This will be the first game in the history of the Fighting Hawks. UND teams started life as the "Flickertails" then spent most of their life as the "Fighting Sioux". Due to the NCAA prohibitiop on aboriginal names they have spent a few years without a nickname. So Saturday night marks a 4th pgase of history for them.

For the Bisons this is just a one-game weekend, so with a huge roster still at camp there will be a lot of players without ice time. The Bisons have updated their roster page and no cuts have been made.

There are two bits of news at UND, and one story about each is in the links. One is that they are getting their championship rings for the NCAA title they won last spring. Two is that they are the pre-season #1 choice in the polls.

LU and the U of L last played in 2002 and tied one game 3-3 and the other was a 6-4 win for the Mutts.

Both sides missed the playoffs last year. However, Lethbridge showed remarkable improvement. Lakehead also had a reasonable 2nd half after digging a deep hole in the 1st.

This was Lakehead's first action of the season, while Lethbridge is 4-0-0 against ACAC teams.

The linked game story has a nice description of what was apparently a chippy affair. The teams meet again on Saturday at 7:00 EDT, or 6:00 CDT.

Oct 1: Late Surge Costs Bisons

MANITOBA BISONS 1
NORTH DAKOTA FIGHTING HAWKS 5

Links:
• [UND Game Story]
• [Box Score (pdf)]
• [Highlights]

This was a funny game. The goals tended to come in bunches. After the Hawks (?) raised their banner (as NCAA champions) the 1st period produced little action. It looked like the period would end 0-0 when the Herd gave up two goals just 10 seconds apart.

After a scoreless 2nd period the Bisons  got on the board with an unassisted goal from Hudson Friesen (who now appears to be a defenceman, although this is not a certainty from the summary) after 4 minutes. At mid-period a Bison powerplay fizzled and after that there was no rally.

Each goaltender played a period. Paulic stopped 11 of 13, Spriggs made all 8 saves he needed, and Sydora struggled, allowing 3 goals on 10 shots.

Scratches were:
D: 5 L. Christensen, 6 Heinrich
F: 14 Nault, 16 Paradis, 18 Kelly

The Thundermutts vaulted to a 2-0 lead but the H0rny Ones bounced back for the win. A last second goal for the hosts made the scoreline look better.  Lethbridge has a 6-0-0 pre-season mark, but have yet to play a conference opponent.

Return to GPAC! Back in the day it was the Bisons, Nor'westers (as they were), Regina, and the dearly departed Bobcats and Wesmen once had their own little conferemce. The Bisons are no doubt in a much better place right now.

The shores of Lake Superior are a fairly common non-conference stop for the Bisons. In fact, Winnipeg is closer to Thunder Bay than any city in the OUA (700 km as opposed to 1,000 to Sudbury or 1,100 to North Bay). At one time Lakehead would host a 4-team event at Christmas. That was a tough trip when the Mutts were one of the better teams around. As they faded the event became more feasible as a one-on-one.

I admit to having a soft spot for Thunder Bay teams. They face serious challenges just finding a league in which to play. In the past they had junior, senior, intermediate, and university teams all in one league just so they could find four.

Lakehead started the season last week with two home losses to Lethbridge in a battle of two non-playoff teams from a year ago. They started last year at 0-10-1, went 1-1-3 before Christmas, then were a respectable 6-6-0 in the new year. The surge was not enough to make the playoffs in the OUA West, where 8 of the 10 teams qualified.

The Bisons have won when they were supposed to this pre-season, easily sweeping series against Jamestown and Regina. Otherwise they beat Sask and lost to Calgary and North Dakota. I will be interested to see if they use all the players in camp, or if it is time to trim the roster.

In one roster note, defenceman Blake Heinrich has been released by the Minnesota/Iowa Wild and should be ready to report.

The linked story fron the CW includes the annual coaches' poll, since the regular season starts in Saskatchewan. Here's the result"

Team / Points (first-place votes)

1. Saskatchewan / 49 (7)
2. Alberta / 39 (
3. Mount Royal / 36
4. Manitoba / 30
5. UBC / 26
6. Calgary / 22
7. Lethbridge / 15
8. Regina / 7

The regular season starts in a staggered fashion this year. All by itself is this curtain-raiser from the Rutherdump in Saskatown. Manitoba and Alberta have non-conference games whilst Calgary, Mount Royal, Lethbridge, and Regina will gorge on turkey.

The Banjomutts are the reigning champs. After two years in a downward spiral, the Mutts surprised last season when they seemed to strike gold with every new recruit. With a strong crop of returnees they are the big favourites this year.

But hold on there, Baba Louie. The Mutts are only 1-2-1 in pre-season. Their only win was against Regina. They lost to Manitoba, Alberta (in OT), and Calgary. Pre-season records often show what sort of start a team will have.

At the same time, the 'Birds went 5-1-0, but only two games were against the CW. Those were two OT wins over the Evil Monkeys. That's good. Their split with Ryerson is a sister-kisser. Their two wins against BCIHL teams were to be expected.

This game is the last of the NCAA games. Can the Evil Monkeys stop the whitewash? In a twist, the OUA has done better against the NCAA than against the CW. At 5-2-2 the Apes look like a contender but not a scary juggernaut as was expected a year ago.

This game, and the Monkeys' game in the Excited States, bring the exhibition season to a close. This was a hybrid weekend, with the regular season starting elsewhere. More on that later. Right now, let's talk Bisons!

A road sweep is never easy, so some level of celebration is in order. But the celebration should be somewhat subdued because it was not exactly a contender in opposite uniforms. The 7-2-0 pre-season is a decent record. However against likely playpff teams from the CW, the Herd was 1-1. Pretty much the same as everyone else!.

As for the game, Kamerin Nault and Brad Bowles had two goals eacg and Jonah Wasylak scored for the 2nd game in a row. The links include a nice write-up and here's the summary:

PERIOD 1:
1. 01:41 Manitoba, Nault (Merasty , Augert )
2. 06:23 Manitoba, Wasylak (Dudar , Johnston )
Penalties:
02:38 Manitoba, Zajac (SL)

PERIOD 2:

4. 00:35 Lakehead, Cody Alcock (Linden Springer) PP
5. 17:28 Lakehead, Tyler Anton (Justin Sefton)

13:56 Lakehead, Linden Springer (INT)

PERIOD 3:

7. 13:12 Lakehead, Linden Springer (unassisted)
8. 15:30 Lakehead, Kelin Ainsworth (Dylan Butler, Cody Alcock)
Penalties:

04:36 Lakehead, Linden Springer (SL)
08:04 Manitoba, Friesen (SL)

14:47 Manitoba, Augert (TR)

Goaltenders:
Lakehead:
Devin Green, 21 saves made, 5 goals against.
Manitoba:
Paulic, 22 saves made, 4 goals against.

Next Friday night and Saturday afternoon the Bisons will face the Mount Royal Bluegars to open the season. Lakehead finishes their ore-season at 0-4-0. They start to play for real next weekend in a home double-header against the Windsor Lancers.

The Saskatchewanites will be having a ho-down tonight complete with banjos, moonshine, kazoos, and roast possum. Sask scored 6 goals on 29 shots on UBC goaltender Matt Hewitt. He was yanked with about 10 minutes left and newcomer Derek Dun stopped 4 of the 5 shots he faced. The shot pattern was odd. In the 1st period, the shots were 17-3 in favour of Sask (and they led 3-0), In the 2nd, UBC outshot Sask by 18-4 but Jordon Cooke stopped everything fired at the Sask goal. In the end the shots were 34-28 for Sask and 7 different mangy inbreds scored. This was the only regular season series on the CW schedule.

The strikinh thing in the summary was that the shots were 24-21. Not the wide0open craziness for which the Evil Monkeys are known.  Is this the beginning of a change in style? I note that 4 of their 6 pre-season games against CW teams went into overtime, and the other two were split. They finish the pre-season at 6-2-2.

The teams start to play for real now. And it is about time. The start of exhibition play is exciting because it marks the coming of a n3w season and a chance to see the new recruits. But enough already.

Last year the Bisons were 0-4 against the Bluegars. But this year the Bisons have loaded their roster with wuality new recruits while the Bluegars have last about 8 starters, including their leading scorer (Tyler Fiddler).

A couple of years ago these two teams played the most physical games in the CW. They may not be as big as before, but are still fairly close. And they still maybe the mst physical match0up oyt there,

Calgary was thought to be a team in decline But they snagged some pre-season wins over Manitoba, Regina, and Sask and had close losses to MRU and Alberta (twice). Despite their significant losses of key personnel, I suspect they will still be a strong opponent. UBC remains an enigma. Their pre-season record included two wins against the BCIHL and a split with Ryerson. They also beat Alberta twice, both in OT. I was unsure what to make of them. Then they were crushed by the Banjomutts last weekend. They could dig themselves a deep hole with two losses this series.

This is a rematch of last season's final. However, both sides showed some cracks in pre-season but both won their games last weekend. They were also #1 and #2 in the CW coaches' poll. Sask returns most of their roster so should be improving still. The Evil Monkeys get a strong recruiting class every year, and this ne is no exception. However, they don't appear to be as good on ice as they do on paper.

These two seem to be the perennial doorats in this conference. The H0rny Ones improved greatly and were very close to the playoffs last yera. Don't let the pre-season records fool you. Regina played only CW and NCAA teams, and Lehbridge played only ACAC amd OUA teams. So hard to gauge.

Oct 14: Bisons Start with a Loss

This game was a tight one where the outcome as in doubt up until the empty net goal put it away. And this was the most one-sided game in the CW first full weekend of competition.

My son was sick so we stayed home and I watched the stream on CanadaWest.tv. It was mostly entertaining. The Bisons opened scoring when Justin Augert skayed through 5 Blyegars by himself on a line change. However, MRU cashed in twice on powerplays to take the lead. With the game tied 1-1 after two periods, the Bisons dominated most of the 3rd period. The shots were 15-7. However, after killing a couple of pemalties, MRU cashed in after the Bisons took a too many men penalty om the final 5 minutes.

Bluegars scorers were Connor Rankin, Jesse Lee, and Cam Maclise. Byron Spriggs was tagged with the loss, stopping 18 of the 20 shots he faced. Colin Cooper stopped 25 of 26 to post the win.

The scratches for the Bisons were:

Defence:
5 L Christensen - 6 B Heinrich

Forwards:
8 L Bilton - 12 N Zajac - 16 J Paradis
21 B Brooks - 27 J DePape

Goaltender:
34 Sydora

The Saturday rematch is a 1:00 matinee and can be seen on CanadaWest.tv and heard on 101.5 YMFM.com.

This is the type of game one does not expect in the CW. The shors were 29-20 for Bedrock U. Steven Stafford got the win for the Dinos and Matt Hewitt took the loss for the Tweeties. After giving up 11 goals last weekend, this represents progress for UBC.

The Banjpcats were 0-6 on pre-season. But that was agaunst CW and NCAA competition. Meanwhile, the H0rny Ones were 6-0 against ACAC and OUA opposition. Rgis shows what a difference there is in those schedules. The new goaltenders racked up some good numbers. Andy Desautels stopped 29 of 20 for the win and Garrett Hughson stopped 36 of 38 taking the loss.

Being swept at home is never a good thing. The score was not a real indication of the play, but that doesn't really matter.

The 1st period saw the Bisons score first, when Shaq Merasty made a great pass to Remi Laurencelle. Although the period was pretty even (the shots were 9-8), MRU scired 3 times in the last 8 minutes. Bison golatender Justin Paulic did not exactly distinguish himself. One goal was a breakaway. Otherwise there was little sustained oressure by the Bluegars.

The 2nd period was quite close and Bisons appeared to be capable of a comeback. The TSN Turning Point happened late in the period when Colin Cooper stopped Brett Stovin on a breakway which was closely followed by Rankin;s 2nd of the night.

The Bisons did not have much left for a 3rd period comeback and kind of mailed it in. When you are ourshot (13-11) in a 3rd period where you are trailing it is not a good sign for a comeback.

Here's how thd Bisons lined up:

10 Dudar 28 Stovin 29 Wasylak
13 Laurencelle 25 Merasty 24 Augert
12 Zahac 23 Schreyer 17 Callis
22 B Bowles 15 S Bowles 14 Naukt

The scratches for the Bisons were:

G 34 Sydora
D 5 Christensen - 6 Heinrich
F 8 Bilton - 16 Paradis - 18 Kelly
F 21 Brooks - 26 Lisoway - 27 DePape

The Bisons are off to Regina next weekend. Ick. Their goal will be to leave with a .500 record.

Nobody can lose two home games to the Banjocats and still make the playoffs. The last goal was an empty-netter, so this was close throughout.  This was the most free-wheeling game of the weekend, with shots of 38-37 in favour of the winners.

I got tired of waiting for stuff so I made a bare-bones post on Friday night/Saturday morning and am doing a proper updated here on Saturday lunch time.

I got to watch this on CanadaWest.tv. Regina did a reasonable job on their broadcast. The Bison alignment was hard to determine because I have bad vision (until Monday!), the Bison numbers are hard to see on their road jerseys, and broadcasters usually rarely mention the names of away players. However, they had just 4 regular defencemen dressed (Sean Christesnen, Channing Bresciani, Rene Hunter, and Garrett Johnston). It seems that Hunter Friesen is not a defemceman and I have to assume that one oother forward got introduced to the blueline.

The scratches were Paulic in goal, Adam Genry on defence, and Brent Dudar at forward. Yet to dress for a regular season game are Liam Bilton, Lee Christensen, Blake Heinrich, Dylan Kellym abd Jesse Paradis. Which are out due to numbers and which due to injury is unknown to me.

The Kittens played much better than they did in the pre-season. They outshot the Bisons 38-30. However they have a severe lack of offensive finesse so not many of their chances were awe-inspiring. Still a good performance by Byron Spriggs. Quick summary:

1st
11:46     Man  Augert (2) ASST: Laurencelle (7)
15:56     Reg  McPhee (1) ASST: None
2nd
14:51     Man  Merasty (1) ASST: Augert (1)
3rd
6:03     Man  Stovin (1) ASST: DePape (1), Zajac (1)
13:51     Man  Augert (3) ASST: Laurencelle (2)
17:13     Man  Lisoway (1) ASST: Callis (1)

Good to see that Jordan DePape was back in the roster.

Saturday's rematch is at 3:99 CST or 4:00 CDT.

The Bluegars are off to a good start. After a pair of 1-0 wins, Bedrock U must now get used to having to score some. The Bluegars likely want to avoid another 3rd place finish so they can get that elusive first round bye. Cplon Cooper got the win and Steven Stafford took the loss.  Matthew Brown led MRU with a hat-trick. A dominant win for MRU on all the stats.

The H0rny Ones never played a CW opponent in pre-season then opened with a split against Regina. So this series will help put them in context. Jesse Forsberg scored twice for the Mutts, including the OT winner. Meanwhile, Justin Valentino scored both goals for the 'Horns.

Oct 22: Herd Completes the Sweep

The Bisons completed a convincing sweep of the Banjocats late Saturday afternoon. The matinee was great because it allowed the players to get the heck out of that dump as soon as possible.

The line-up was the same as on Friday except that Paulic replaced Sydora as the backup goaltender. Byron Spriggs stopped 27 of 30 in claiming his 2nd win of the weekend. Regina started veteran Mitch Kilgore and he stopped 26 of 30 through two periods before Andy Desaitels came in to stop 8 of 9 in the 3rd. Here's how the scoring went:

1st
7:44     Reg Coleshaw (2) ASST: Bell (2), Luhning (1) (PP)
10:28     Man B Bowles (1) ASST: Stovin (1), S Bowles (1) (PP)
2nd
5:18     Man DePape (1) ASST: Stovin (2), Lisoway (1)
10:13     Man Hunter (1) ASST: Stovin (3), DePape (2) (PP)
17:59     Man Stovin (2) ASST: B Bowles (1), DePape (3) (PP)
3rd
2:11     Reg Coleshaw (3) ASST: Fowlie (1)
9:21     Reg McNulty (1) ASST: None
14:26     Man Augert (4) ASST: Merasty (2), Laurencelle (3)
18:38     Man Callis (1) ASST: None (EN)

Augert is racking up the goals. He also scored a bundle in the pre-season. He has really clicked with Merasty and Laurencelle. DePape appears to be hitting his stride after his injury. He and Stovin played with one or both of the Bowles at various times. The Cats have to watch the penalties. The Bisons went 3 for 10 on the PP. (Regina was 1 for 3.)

The Bisons host UBC next weekend for a Friday-Saturday double-header.

In the Town of Bedrock it appears that the Bluegars are now the #1 team. This was not as close as the score would indicate. The shots were 45-29 and it was 4-1 with less than 2 minutes left. Colin Cooper was again the winning goaltender and newcomer Coleman Volrath was tagged with the loss. Luke Simpson scored twice for the winners and Dylan Walchuk had a deuce for Bedrock U.

The Mangy Mutts had a 3-1 lead before being blown away by the H0rny Ones. Jordon Cooke was unable to bail out the Mutts this time, stopping 28 of 32 shots.  Garrett Hughson stopped 32 of 35 shots for the win.  Tim Campbell's 2 goals led the way for the 'Horns. So Lethbridge starts with 2 points against Regina and 3 against Sask. Early results make me believe that the conference has tightened a bit this year.

This win shows the strengths and weaknesses of the Evil Monkeys. They outshot the Birds 15-7 in the 1st period yet trailed 3-2. Starting goaltender Kenny Cameron lasted barely 10 minutes, giving up 3 goals on 6 shots.  Brendan Burke then stopped 17 of 19 to secure the win. Matt Hewitt gave up 8 goals on 31 shots before pulled pulled mid-way through the 3rd. Derek Dun then gave up 1 goal on the 8 shots he faced. Rtson Baillie and Jamie Crooks each scored twice for the Apes, and Chase Clayton notched a pair for the Birds.

So after two weeks for most teams, here is how they stand:

This is an important early season test for the boys from British California. They are 1-5-0 and two more losses this weekend would leave them in a tough spot. Moreover, they have opened the season against the teams they need to beat if they want to move up the CW ladder. They have played Sask, Calgary, and Alberta. UBC have longed for the day when they do more than fight tooth and nail for the final playoff spot.

In a quirky stat, over the last 4 years UBC is 4-3-1 at Manitoba and Manitoba is 5-2-1 at UBC.

Bison goaltender Byron Spriggs was awarded the CW's 2nd star for AoW last week. I suspect he may get both starts again this weekend. Up front, 4 forwards are at least on a point-per-game pace - Augert, Stovin, DePape, and Laurencelle.

The Bisons have thus far faced just the best and the worst of the CW. If they want to move up, this is the type of series they need to win.

This is a home-and-home series between the two southern Alberta rivals. Bedrock U had a solid pre-season, followed by a sweep of UBC and a domination by MRU. Here's another home-and-home series. Canines vs. Felines. The Bumpkins of Northern Banjoland vs. the Hicks of the South. Friday's game in Regina is their Shine On game, a fundraiser for cancer research. The Kittens were swept by the Bisons last weekend but did show signs of life. Against a common opponent (Lethbridge), Regina earned a 2-2 point split whilst Sask was 2-3. Sask is the reigning champ and on paper should be stronger this year, but their results make me pause for now.

This is the most interesting match-up of the weekend. In the whole CIS, the Evil Monkeys are the most consisent winner and the newcomer Bluegars are off to the best start. So is the start of the season just a blip? Or a sign of things to come? After losing last Friday, the Monkeys came out guns-a-blazing last Saturday. Have they turned the corner?

Is there such a thing as a convincing 3-2 win? If so, this was it. The Bisons carried the play, outshooting the Birds 40-31 and missing many top-notch scoring opportunities. The Bisons also rolled 4 lines most of the time, whilst UBC stuck to their top 9 forwards. That combination leaves the Bisons better poritioned for the Saturday rematch. Now, on to the game.

This was my first game with a good eye so I was able to get a good handle on the line-ups. Here's the alignment:

MANITOBA

Goal:
35 Spriggs (1 Paulic)

Defence:
4 Bresciani - 19 Friesen
20 Johnston - 2 Henry
3 S Christensen - 28 Stovin

U.B.C.

Goal:
30 Hewitt (34 Dun)

Defence:
4 Vannieuwenhuizen - 8 Guenther
13 Becker - 7 Faith
26 Carvalho - 29 Smith
2 Fafard

Forwards:

Scratches:

SCORING:

1st
18:41     UBC Bardaro (3) ASST: Lockhart (1), Antilla (1) (PP)
2nd
0:38     Man DePape (2) ASST: B Bowles (2), S Bowles (2)
1:34     Man Augert (5) ASST: Laurencelle (4), Merasty (3)
19:54     Man Henry (1) ASST: Merasty (4), Laurencelle (5) (PP)
3rd

As mentioned, UBC did not use their "extra" guys very much. Of note, Brett Stovin was moved back to the blueline. However, during two 10 minute misconducts assessed against the Bisons, he moved up front to allow the 4 line rotation to continue.

The game started with some good back-and-forth play. The Bisons generated a few great chances but were unable to pull the trigger, including a breakaway for Jordan DePape. Play turned in UBC's favour when the Bisons took back-to-back penalties late in the period. On the 2nd one, Anthony Bardaro gave the Birds their only lead of the game.

The intermission changed the game around. Before the hot dogs got cold the Bisons had a 2-1 lead on goals from DePape (his 2nd) and Justin Augert (his 5th). Play settled in thereafter. Then in the last minute of play, Adam Henry scored his 1st of the season on a Bison PP.

Despite trailing by two goals, UBC did not really force the play in the 3rd period. In fact, they were outshot 13-10. Hard to come back with those numbers. With an empty net they finally created some chances and narrowed the gap with 13 seconds left. Too little, too late.

Byron Spriggs stopped 29 of 31 shots to claim the win, and veteran Matt Hewitt stopped 37 of 40 in suffering defeat.

The rematch goes Saturday at 7:30, later than usual due to the Blue Bummers' afternoon game.

The H0rny Ones have lost their home leg of this home-and-home series and have fallen a point behind Bedrock U as a result. They did outshoot the Dinos 32-25 on the night. However, it took a last-minute goal to make the scoreline respectable. Veteran Steven Stanford got the win and rookie Garret Hughson got the loss.

The Dogs beat the Cats in the first Battle of Banjoland this season. There were 5 different goal-scorers. Jordon Cooke got another win, making 25 saves in 26 chances. Andy Desautels stopped 33 of 37 in taking the loss. Regina modeled some new yellow jerseys in the game.

The Evil Monkeys had to win in order to bring the Bluegars back into reality and here you go. All of the goals came in a wild 2nd period. Luke Siemans picked up the win, making 26 saves in 28 chances, and Colin Cooper tasted his first loss, stopping 27 of 31. There were 6 different goal-scorers on the night.

So the CW's traditional Big Four all won their games. Is the conference going back to normal?

Oct 29: UBC Gets a Split

I fell asleep Saturday night while waiting for the game story to be uploaded. So here we go with a Sunday afternoon nightly report.

One might think that a 3-2 loss following a 3-2 win would imply two comparable games with simply a reverse score, but that is not the case. The Bisons controlled Friday's game. While they outshot UBC 34-30 on Saturday, they missed the net or failed to pull the trigger on their best chances on Saturday. They did not pass as well, fumbled the puck, and were generally just not sharp all night.

MANITOBA

Goal:

The Bisons rotated their 5 defencemen, so the pairings did not really exist. Stovin was moved back up front on a separate line to "spread the wealth", and the four guys on the 4th line all played a lot. IMO, you don't need 13 forwards dressed and perhaps the alignment is what made the team seem out of synch all night.

Next week the Bisons are off to visit the Dinos at Bedrock U. They host Lethbridge November 11-12.

The H0rny Ones were clinging to a 1-0 lead after two periods but before you could say Yabba Dabba Doo the Dinos had a 2-1 win. Matthew Greenfield had his first start for the Dinos and veteran Damien Ketlo got the nod for Lethbridge. Shots were 30-22 for Calgary.

The Banjocats were flattered by this scoreline. They were outshot 51-21 yet it took a late 3rd period goal by the Banjomutts to break a 3-3 tie. Once again, Sask went with Jordon Cooke in goal and Regina countered with Andy Desautels.

The Bluegars entered the weekend in a lofty 1st place status but the Evil Monkeys responded in their traditional fashion. After a win at home, the Apes showed they were just as adept winning on the road. An MRU goal with 2 seconds left made it look close. Luke Siemens stopped 32 of 34 for the win and vet Cam Lanigan stopped 23 of 26 for the loss.
