Hollywood
It is now next year. The Bisons' first recruiting news comes about a month earlier than it did last year. The first three recruits seem of a high enough calibre. However, last year's team had just 7 defencemen and once injuries struck the team was short-staffed for many games. Therefore, my view is that it will be the calibre of blue line recruits which will tell us what level of team to expect. Note that ALL of the 2015-16 roster is eligible to return. So even one good defenceman may be enough. Links: [U of M Announcement] Nick Zajac - LW/C - Saskatoon (WHL) - Zajac hales from Headingley and has good bloodlines. He is coming off a 20-goal season in the Dub, where he was captain of the Blades. He is listed as 5'10" and 180 lbs. Maybe he could catch on playing the wing with Shaq Merasty, or if they concentrate their top 3 on one line, he could even centre his own line. Links: Stats: [Elite Prospects] : [Hockey DB] Profiles: [WHL Profile] Stories: [Star-Phoenix] Global TV: [Sept 2015] : [Mar 2016] Quintin Lisoway - C/LW - Brandon (WHL), Steinbach (MJHL), Acadie-Bathurst (QMJHL) - Lisoway is from Neepawa and started out with the Natives in the MJHL. He then went to the Wheaties in the Dub, and went back and forth from there to Steinbach. In 2015-16 he had stints with Steinbach and Brandon, before settling in with Acadie-Bathurst in the Q to finish his junior career. He is 5'10" and 194 lbs. He was able to score well in the MJHL, with 18 goals in 27 games. In the Q and the Dub he seemed to be thought of us a useful player but not a high goal-scorer. Links: Stats: [Elite Prospects] : [Hockey DB] : [Wikia] Profiles: [Wheat Kings] : [QMJHL] Stories: [MyWestoba] Kamerin Nault - F - Winnipeg (MJHL) - Nault is a Winnipegger who started with Garden City in high school hockey before going to the Blues for four seasons. He is coming off 37 goals in 54 games. At 6'2" he weighs only 160 lbs. I guess he could use a good buffet and some weight training from the Bison training staff. Hollywood
The Bisons have not announced any new commitments from players, but they have added an assistant coach. Ryan Bonni, former coach at River East in the MMJHL and a former NHLer, joined the staff. Returnng assistants are Steve Christie, Tyler Dittmer, Riley Dudar, and Devin Himpe. Hollywood
REMI LAURENCELLE - LW/C - Everett (0WHL) - Laurencelle fits the Bison profile in many ways - a local boy who headed west to play major junior, wore a letter, and is coming home for his university. Of note, after a slow start to hs major junior career he is coming off seasons of 23 and 28 goals. This past season he also scored 4 goals in 9 playoff games. Unless the Bisons lose all their best returnees, they should have an incredible group of forwards. But with only 7 defencemen on last year's roster, they now need some blueline signings. He also had scraps with current Jets Adam Lowry and Nic Petan. At 5'10" and 17 years old the Lowry fight was a mismatch. See the links! Hollywood
The new Bison schedule has been released and includes a complete list of 9 exhibition games against teams from 4 different leagues. Here is the exhibition schedule: Fri Sep 09 Jamestown at Manitoba 7:30 pm Sat Sep 10 Jamestown at Manitoba 7:30 pm Fri Sep 16 Manitoba v Calgary at Regina 8:00 pm Sat Sep 17 Manitoba v Saskatchewan at Regina 1:00 pm Fri Sep 23 Regina at Manitoba 7:00 pm Sat Sep 24 Regina at Manitoba 1:00 pm Wed Oct 05 Manitoba at Manitoba Moose time TBA Fri Oct 07 Manitoba at Lakehead 6:00 pm Sat Oct 08 Manitoba at Lakehead 6:00 pm The regular season home opener weekend is October 14th and 15th against the Mount Royal Cougars, Friday at 7:00 and Saturday at 1:00. The trend to Saturday afternoon games continues with 4 of their 7 series featuring a Saturday matinee following a Friday night game. The other 3 series will see two games at 7:00 and one moved back to 7:30. Across the CW, Lethbridge is the only team without a schedule story, and Regina was the only other team to post their exhibition games. UBC and Saskatchewan will start the season a week earier than the rest. Links: :. [CW Announcement] :. [U of M announcement] :. [CW Schedule/Results Page] :. [U of M Schedule] : [Printer Friendly] :. [Alberta] : [Calgary] : [MRU] :. [Regina (w ex)] : [Sask] : [UBC] Who are the Jamestown Jimmies? They are a brand new team operating in ACHA division 1. The Bisons demolished the Iowa State Cyclones of the ACHA on November 27-28, 2009 by scores of 8-3 and 10-2. Those games were such mis-matches I actually feared for the safety of Iowa State. Jamestown has recruited from the KIJHL (Junior B) and SIJHL (Junior A). Their [Facebook Page] has recruiting announcements. In other sports, Jamestown plays in the Northstar Athletic Association (NSAA) but may switch to the US version of the GPAC. Both are conferences in the NAIA. Of note, the Winnipeg Wesmen baseball team also plays in the NSAA. I have hoped that the ACHA independent team at Minot State and the NJCAA teams in Williston State and Dakota-Bottineau would be used as opponents for a revived MCAC which would include the Winnipeg Wesmen and Brandon Bobcats, but that may be a pipedream. I find the renewal of the Battle of the Herds to be interesting. The game will be played at the MTS Iceplex. This will be the 7th game between the teams. Hollywood
First, we bade farewell to the STU Pids of the AUS. Now, it is so long to the short-lived Keystone Huskies program from the ACAC. The school is based in Fort McMurray, Alberta and has suffered from declining enrolment and the fire. Keystone showed progress. The team operated for just 4 seasons and finished 7th, 8th, 6th, and 3rd. The ACAC is now back down to 8 teams for the upcoming 2016-17 season. Links: :. [ACAC Story] :. [Fort McMurray Today] :. Hollywood
Around the CW Links: :. [UBC July 7] : [UBC July 19] :. [U of L July 12] There are no new schedule announcements nor any news from the Bisons. However, UBC had two recruiting announcements and Lethbridge had one. The links are loaded with pictures, stats, and even videos. On July 7th, UBC announced that defenceman Jerrett Smith was leaving one team of Thunderbirds for another. He captained Seattle's WHL team last year. Then on July 19th they added three more WHL grads, namely Tanner Faith (defence - Moose Jaw), Carter Popoff (forward - Vancouver), and Joseph Carvahlo (defence - Prince George). Meanwhile, on July 12 the Hørny Ones made a mass announcement. They may want to dovert some school funds to the purchase of an abacus. After overhauling the roster prior to last season, the Pronghorn men's hockey team announced its 2016-17 recruiting class today with the addition of eight players; five forwards, three defencemen, and one goaltender. They should have recruited this guy: Here are the names from the story: Russ Maxwell - forward - 2 years off on a mission - former Lethbridge/Seattle WHL Garrett Hughson - goaltender - Spokane WHL Cory Millette - forward - Lethbridge WHL Ryan Chynoweth - left wing - Lloydminster AJHL (several AJHL and WHL tams) Torrin White - forward - Langley BCHL (Moose Jaw WHL) Connor Sanvido - right wing - STU AUS (several WHL teams) Ayrton Nikkel - defence - Allen ECHL (several BCHL and WHL teams) Clint Filbrandt - defence - Drumheller AJHL Both teams have what appears to be a good set of recruits. However, one always needs to ask who is returning from last year's roster. That is a lot of new names for Lethrbidge after a major shake-up last year. Hollywood
The Butt Sniffers are holding a banquet on November 3rd and the speakers will be Brad May and Brian Burke. Burke will likely tell them to play with pugnacity, bellicosity, and truculence. They won't know what he's talking about. So they will go outside, pee on the building, and bark at May. Still no pre-season schedule for the Mutts, nor the procrastinators at Alberta, Calgary, MRU, and UBC. Link: :. [U of S Story]

Hollywood
As I have mentioned, the entire Bison roster from 2015-16 was eligibl to return. So with 8 announced recruits, and 7 of those being forwards, I have to wonder which players have left school and which are coming to camp for an intense competition. Last year's roster included just 7 defencemen, so they nededd recruits there. Links: •[U of M Announcement] •[MJHL Announcement] •[MyToba.ca] Garrett Johnston - D - Acadie-Bathurst/Chicoutimi/Moncton (QMJHL) - With five previously-announced recruits up front (and two more in this release) the Bisons really needed to land a defenceman with a major junior background. He evidently has some size and takes care of his own end of the ice. Im other words, the type the team used to have more of and really needs. He is a Winnipeg boy coming home after 3 years in th QMJHL. He started with Moncton and last season was twice-traded. Seems odd for the Bisons to have two recruits from the same team in the Q. (Quinton Lisoway is the other.) He started his junior career in the MJHL for the Swan Valley Stampeders. Links: Stats: [Elite Prospects] : [Hockey DB] Profiles: [QMJHL Profile] Stories: [Acadie-Bathurst] YouTube: [End of a Fight] Brad Bowles - C - Portage (MJHL) - Bowles and his twin brother are the Bisons' answer to the Sedins I guess. He comes to the Bisons off a Junior A career where he won everything available at that level, including the scoring title last year. He was also at the Calgary Flames' rookie camp last month. It is not often one sees a Junior A recruit considered to be a prime prospect but this is one. In 60 games his numbers were 45-57-102. In 13 playoff games he was 17-17-34. Over his career he has played 18 games at the RBC and WCC and has racked up 9-14-23. He has missed more games due to injury. In 39 games he went 19-46-65, a similar PPG ratio to that of his brother. Hollywood
Preview: Sep 9-10: Jamestown at Bisons ` JAMESTOWN JIMMIES (0-0-0) MANITOBA BISONS (0-0-0) Friday, September 9th, 7:30 CDT @ Wayne Fleming Arena Saturday, September 10th, 7:30 CDT @ Wayne Fleming Arena Links: • [Bison Team Site] • [Bison Roster Page] • [LeagueStat Bison Roster Page] • [Elite Prospects Bison Page] • [Jamestown Team Site] • [Jamestown Facebook Page] We are just a day away from the start of the season. At this stage it is hard to do much of a preview because the Bisons have yet to upload a roster page for this year. One good reason is that the season is starting a week earlier than usual. Also, the training camp roster usually undergoes updates as players are added and deleted. However, I found a useful link at Elite Prospects. Here is what I found. On this list, "confirmed" is with respect to the Elite Prospects list.GoaltendersConfirmed returnees (3) Justin Paulic Byron Spriggs Dasan SydoraDefencemenConfirmed returnees (4) Channing Bresciani Lee Christensen Adam Henry Rene HunterConfirmed recruits (1) Garrett JohnstonUnconfirmed returnees (3) Sean Christensen Luke Paulsen Brock SutherlandForwardsConfirmed returnees (8) Justin Augert Liam Bilton Brett Brooks Warren Callis Brett Dudar (returning from 2014-15) Jesse Paradis Joel Schreyer Jonah WasylakConfirmed recruits (7) Brad Bowles Shawn Bowles Hudson Friesen Remi Laurencelle Quintin Lisoway Kamerin Nault Nick ZajacUnconfirmed returnees (8) Jordyn Boyd Dustin Bruyere Jordan DePape Dylan Kelly Shaq Merasty Chris Stockl Brett Stovin Zach Waldvogel The top 3 scorers from 2015-16 (Merasty, DePape, and Stovin) are "unconfirmed". There are already 15 forwards on the list. Like I always say, you cannot evaluate the quality of a recruiting class until you see who is eligible to return but is not returning. Also, I have nothing to say about Jamestown. This is the first season for the program so Friday night's debut will go down in their history as a momentous occasion.AROUND THE CIS - Former Monkey and Jets' prospect Levko Koper has signed an AHL contract with the Charlotte Checkers. Link: • [U of A Story] - After only one season, the Birdies have parted company with coach Adam Shell. His replacment is former assistant Sven Butenschon. The linked story says about as little as possible. Butenschon is a former Wheatie and has many years of pro experience in the NHL, AHL, and Europe. Link: • [UBC Story] - Laurentian and Nipissing have created a multi-sport challenge event which they hope will fan the flames of rivalry. This is reminiscent of the Winnipeg v Manitoba Dickworth Challenge and the Crowchild Classic between Calgary and Mount Royal. This one is being dubbed the 705 Challenge Cup. Hollywood
Another recruit? Reid Zalitech - D - Moose Jaw (WHL) - A right-handed defenceman with WHL experience would be an asset. But is he playing? Is he playable? I came across his name at Elite Prospects. They linked to a story from almost a year ago in the Moose Jaw Times. Zalitach played 65 games in two seasons with the Warriors. He was acquired from Vancouver for a fourth round pick in 2015 and a third rounder in 2016. "Reid re-injured his knee during the week," Millar said. "He has played for the past while with some chronic pain in his knee and he just feels he can't continue to do so. It's been a real challenge for him. He's going to move on with his life as well and is looking at going to the University of Manitoba in the beginning of January." Zalitach had previously torn his MCL and also had a patellar dislocation in his knee during his career. We'll see.Links: Stats: [Elite Prospects] : [Hockey DB] Vancouver Province: [arrival] : [departure] Moose Jaw Story: [MJ Times]
Hollywood
Sept 9: Bisons Coast In Jimmies' Franchise Debut JAMESTOWN JIMMIES 0 MANITOBA BISONS 6 Links: • [U of M Schedule/Results] It is always nice to get out to hockey for the dirst time in late summer. The crowd was small, yet more than I anticipated due to the Goldeyes having a hom game and TV featuring the Red Sox v Blue Jays and the World Cup exhibition game. The game was also significant in that the Jamestown team was playing their first ever game. Will this lead to bigger and better things? Time will tell. Althoufh they looked sharp in their bright orange jerseys, they were in way iver their heads. One can safely say the score flattered them. I have thus far not seen a game report and summary. The Bisons held period leads of 3-0 and 5-0. The shots be period were 15-3, 17-2, and 9-5. Justin Paulic shared the shut-out with Dasan Sydora. Goals were scored by Justin Augert, Jesse Paradis, Brett Stovin, Dylan Kelly, Joel Schreyer, and Jordan DePape. There was a vast difference betweem the teams. I don't believe that Jamestown had consecutive shots in the game. There were only maybe 1 or 2 faceoffs per period in the Bison end. Of the 10 official shots only 2 or 3 actually required effort. My vision is not good at present so I could not jot down the alignment. I got help from my son for the Bisons and got this: Goal 1 Paulic - 34 Sydora Defence 5 L Christensen - 9 Hunter 3 S Christensen - 5 Brescani 20 Johnston - 2 Henry Forwards 16 Paradis - 28 Stovin - 27 DePape 18 Kelly - 25 Merasty - 29 Wasylak 8 Bilton - 11 Laurencelle - 24 Augert 21 Brooks - 17 Callis - 23 Schreyer Scratches G 35 Spriggs D 6 Heinrich F 10 Dudar - 12 Zajac - 14 Nault F 15 S Bowles - 19 Friesen - 22 B Bwles F 26 Lisoway - 30 Stagg So 20 forwards are trying out for the team, and just 7 defencemen. I remember one season when they kept 10 defencemen and 14 forwards, and played many games with 2 or 3 d-men playing forward. It is mucj harder to do the reverse. One notable absence from the roster is defenceman and former #12 Brock Sutherland. He could have been back for a 5th year but likely graduated after 4 years and has moved on. There were also two new names not previously announced as recruits.Blake Heinrich - D - Portland (WHL) - This Minnesota boy played two full seasons with the Sioux City Musketeers of the USHL then went to the Portland Winterhawks in the Dub. He had been a recruit for UMD but then switched to the major junior route.Links: Stats: [Elite Prospects] : [Hockey DB] Profiles: [HF] Story: [Portland recruitment] Daniel Stagg - F - Cochrane (NOJHL) - He played a mix of Junior A and B hockey before being recruited by Portage College last year. Hollywood
Sept 10: Herd Sweeps, so does CW JAMESTOWN JIMMIES 0 MANITOBA BISONS 9 Links: • [U of M Schedule/Results] • [U of M Twitter] The Jimminies came out with some intensity, giving it a literal "college try" after their Friday night debacle. For one period, it worked to an extent. The Bisons came out trampling them but on a PP the Jimmies actually carried the play and had scoring chances. However, the Bisons got goals from Channing Bresciani and Remi Laurencelle (on a fabulous breakaway) and outshot them 12-5. In the 2nd period, Byron Spriggs replaced Dasan Sydora in the Bison goal. This gave each goaltender 2 periods on the weekend. It seemed that the 1st period physicality wore out the Jimmies. They were gassed and the Bisons piled on 4 goals and outshot them 15-2. Goals came from Shawn Bowles, Liam Bilton, Justin Augert, and Brett Dudar. Dudar's was on a nice passing play where he was left to put the icing on the cake. The 3rd period was more of the same. I believe that the shots were 14-3, for 41-10 on the night. The Bison goals were scored by three newcomers: Hudson Friesen, Quintin Lisoway, and Daniel Stagg (into an empty net!). Of note, Lisoway switched from #26 to #23 (taking Schreyer's jersey) and Stagg switched from #30 to #29 (Wasylak's jersey). Friesen's goal was the end of a nice passing play with his linemates, Laurencelle and Augert. Incidentally, that line were also the 3 stars. Another interesting tidbit: No Bison scored twice in either game. Only one (Augert) scored in both. He was the only player to score on Friday and dress on Saturday. A couple of players wore a different number than was listed on the line-up sheet. So these alignments may not be 100% accurate. Goal 34 Sydora - 35 Spriggs Defence 5 L Christensen - 9 Hunter 3 S Christensen - 4 Brescani 20 Johnston - 2 Henry Forwards 19 Friesen - 11 Laurencelle - 24 Augert 12 Zajac - 17 Callis - 8 Bilton 15 S Bowles - 22 B Bowles - 10 Dudar 23 Lisoway - 21 Brooks - 29 Stagg Scratches G 1 Paulic D 6 Heinrich F 14 Nault - 16 Paradis - 18 Kelly F 23 Schreyer - 25 Merasty - 27 DePape F 28 Stovin - 29 Wasylak I did not see a 6 or 14 out there. So if Heinrich of Nault drew into the lineup it was in a different jersey number.OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD SIMON FRASER CLAN 1 U.B.C. OOKS 2 Links: • [Alberta Linescore] • [ACAC Schdule/Results] The Monkeys completed the CW's sweep of the Tier II ranks. However, NAIT is a legit CW-level team. So the Monkeys have to be happy with this win in the Athabasca tournament finale.Other ACAC Game Sunday, September 11 MacEwan 2 Concordia 1 It was a unique Sunday where all four Edmonton universities/colleges squared off in cross-town derbies.
