Devils Best/Worst trades ever

Next on the list is the Devils/Scouts/Rockies organization.

TOM KURVERS TRADED TO THE LEAFS FOR THEIR FIRST ROUNDER WHICH TURNED INTO SCOTT th?id=OIP.Mab0d0556a19ccb52f61d272e3713b NIEDERMAYER.

in 1989  The Devils sent Tom Kurvers to the Leafs for their first rounder the following year. The next season the Leafs sucked (surprise!) and the Devils used the third pick in the draft to choose Scott Niedermayer and the rest is history. Nieds became one of the nastiest blueliners to ever lace them up and won a Norris and a Conn Smythe as well as 3 cups with the Devils and one more with the Ducks. Kurvers played 89 games over parts of two seasons for Toronto.

NEIL th?id=OIP.M7c3fc774e7823ccbd3e73f67dccee BROTEN FROM THE STARS FOR COREY MILLEN

Benchmark deadline deal. Broten and the Stars were going nowhere and the Stars dealt the 36 year old Broten who was on his last elgs to the Devils. Broten went on to have an amazing postseason, point a game production as one of the keys to the Devils winning their first ever cup in a last hurrah. Millen played 41 games over parts of two seasons in Dallas before becoming a star with the Sharks. The COLOGNE Sharks.

ILYA KOVALCHUK AND JON MERRILL FROM THE THRASHERS FOR A PACKAGE OF HOT GARBAGE.

Say what you want about Kovalchuk but he consistently was among the leaders in ice time among all forwards, carried a very average Devils team to within a whisker of winning the cup. Yeah he got overpaid and then bolted for Mother Russia but he was one hell of a player and the payout was minimal.

DWIGHT FOSTER AND A PICK WHICH BECAME KEN th?id=OIP.Mc850c4c209745bb11713593536214 DANEYKO FROM THE BRUINS FOR A COUPLE OF PICKS. The picks that boston acquired became Gord Kluzak and Brian Curran who both made the NHL but Daneyko while never a star played 20 years, all for the Devils winning 3 cups and setting the Devils all time record for games played and for penalty minutes.

BOBBY th?id=OIP.Mbd2b520cfec9bdc793023186dd4f2 HOLIK AND JAY PANDOLFO FROM THE WHALERS FOR SEAN BURKE

Burke was an established quasi-star player who was holding out and had spent the entire previous season playing for the Canadian National team and then San Diego of the IHL holding out and neither side budged. With camp aproaching, neither side looked likely to budge and the Devils traded the enigmatic Burke to the whalers for Bobby Holik and a pick which became Jay Pandolfo. In 7 seasons in the Whaler/Hurricane organization Burke never had a winning record while Holik became a heart and soul player, a second line center who had a high motor and never quit. Pandolfo played 13 seasons with the Devils as a grinder. OH and they were forced to give young Marty Brodeur a shot in goal the following year with Burke gone and I think that turned out pretty well.

WORST TRADES IN CLUB HISTORY:

CLAUDE th?id=OIP.M06485985d2404dcebf0926427f96f LEMIEUX TRADED TO THE AVALANCHE (VIA THE ISLANDERS) FOR STEVE THOMAS.

After winning the cup in 1995, Lemieux became ebroilled in a nasty contract squabble with Lou and management, he had scored 13 goals the previous spring in the postseason and was the hero of all seven Devil fans. When it became clear that things were not going well, in contract negotiation, Lou played hardball and in a three way deal traded Pepe to the 'Lanche with the return being the remains of Steve Thomas who in his defense was okay his first season but faded quickly thereafter. Lemieux of course went on to cement his reputation by leading the Avalanche to the Stanley Cup in their first year in Colorado and played for another decade as a super pest and big goal scorer.

JAMIE th?id=OIP.M1de3450430d2722efce3a81071104 LANGENBRUNNER AND JOE NIEUWENDYK FROM THE STARS FOR JASON ARNOTT AND RANDY MCKAY

Two teams in need of a shakeup did this deal in 2002 and it did not pay immediate dividends but the following year the Devils won the cup with Langenbrunner leading the way in the postseason with 11 goals. He went on to star for the Devils for the next 9 seasons. Nieuwendyk was on his last legs but was solid in 02-03 and contributed in the postseason as well before moving on. Arnott had one damn good year for the Stars and a couple of okay ones, McKay played 14 games in Dallas before leaving as an UFA.

Honorable mention was the Colorado Rockies trading Lanny th?id=OIP.Me9fa0fb0dc07e2d9a4f847544ff2d McDonald to the Calgary Flames for Bob McMillan and Don Lever, two decent forwards whose best days were elsewhere while Lanny Mac went on to become iconic and beloved in Calgary. The other honorable mention was the Scouts desperate for players traded a second rounder for Craig Patrick and Denis th?id=OIP.Mfd405af616ffdbcd3225227f5906d Dupere, two mediocre forwards. The Blues used the pick to select Brian Sutter who spent 12 seasons in St. Louis scoring 303 goals.

  Thoughts?

I'm not quite sure how the Langenbrunner/Nieuwendyk for Arnott/McKay trade is one of the worst trades in Devils history. Langenbrunner lead the team in goal scoring during the 2003 Cup run and was a key piece of one of the best lines in team history with Parise and Zajac. Arnott did go on to have some very productive seasons in Dallas and Nashville, so I'd actually say that trade worked out pretty well for both teams.

I would say the Malakhov + a 1st round pick (ended up being David Perron) for Alexander Korulyuk + Jim Fahey was probably worse. Although Lou forced his own hand with the terrible signings of Malakhov, McGillis, and Matvichuk post lockout 2004-05.

An underrated good trade would be getting Bryce Salvador, who became a solid defensive defensemen and leader for them in exchange for Cam Janssen back in 2008.

My bad with the Langenbrunner deal, I put it in the wrong spot. I even said it was a good deal because it led to a cup with Langenbrunner leading the way in postseason goalscoring and Nieuwendyk playing well. Good catch, like I said i just put it in the wrong slot.

Yeah, I thought of Salvador, Coulda listed it because it really worked out well for your boys. I also coulda/Shoulda listed Cory Schneider for a pick (Bo Horvat) which although I like Horvat and think he will have a nice career, Schneider was a must for the Devils and that deal was a steal. Meant to list it but somehow missed that one.

So pumped to see Hall and Henrique together. Hopefully some of that chemistry from Windsor is still there.

I do wonder what they do with the defense though. Greene/Severson is a no brainer #1 pairing, but after that Moore/Merrill/Schlemko are all third pairing guys. I know they're pretty high on Santini, who plays a similar kind of shutdown role as Larsson, but I'm not sure he's ready to step into a top 4 role.

@MadDevil

Schlemko is an UFA and may be gone, no real prospects 9although I do like Hraberenka and do not understand why he hasnt gotten a longer look) and Merrill was not tendered. Lots of money, they will probably sign two of the guys out there, Russell and Demers, something like that. It would not be the worst 2nd pair in the league.....
