Parture
Oilers hate to backcheck. On the first Rangers goal, again within the first 2 minutes of the game, Gryba is too slow to take his man, and Pitlick is too uncoordinated to get the rebound. This all shows up in +/- and GF%. They may have been lucky with a good start to the season, but their true colors show up in the end, and the Oilers don't make the playoffs. Replace Gryba with Davidson. And we got all we can get out of Pitlick so send him down to the AHL. Kassian is an idiot on the 2nd goal against the Oilers. He is taking his man, stays with him, then for some reason he backs away from him, leaving him open, which causes the goal against the Oilers. hf101
Nice goal on the transition with speed beating out the Rangers on a line change. Although they are behind by a goal it looks as if the team is doing a better job backckecking to protect Talbot.
Parture
Lucic could have saved the situation on the first goal against the Oilers but he too didn't feel like backchecking. When you backcheck you often don't get the opportunity to be in the rush to the other end so you won't get a point. Therefore you paly selfishly and cheat up the ice. Is it any wonder why Oilers don't backcheck because they don't get punished for it by the coach. For example, Eberle is the consummate non-back checker and remains on the line with McD even though Eberle's GF% with anyone is terrible, and his +/- is the worst on the team. Eberle should be on the 3rd line until he is traded. Draisaitl and Lucic are horrible together at 33% GF%. Draisaitl is -5 tied with Eberle at -5. Lucic should be the left of McD because they are at 71% together, not Maroon, even though Maroon does great with McD, yet only at 60%. Puljujärvi should be to the right of McD, Kassian is suppose to be with Pouliot & RNH, not with Lander and Letestu. McLellan is an idiot. Everything they do is wrong, going against the GF% data. Parture
They start the 2nd period with Eberle, Pouliot and RNH which is idiotic. Eberle should never play with RNH or Pouliot given they have a terrible GF% together. 42% with Pouliot and 40% with RNH. McLellan is an idiot. Parture
Good thing Chiarelli acquired Sekera since Sekera just got his first goal in 46 games. But then Sekera had a juicy opportunity for a goal and he missed the net. You can't ask for a better setup. I guess we have to wait another 46 games for Sekera to score again. He's got his maximum trade value now.
Parture
RNH passed it to the Rangers who scored. Now you know why RNH's +/- of -32 last season is now -34. Funny. The old Oilers are back, losing 3 games in a row.
