I must admit Pods, a bit of my long fostered Flyer negativity crossed over into Team Canada against Sweden. I thought we had a decent shot to win, but maybe I (actually a lot of Canadians I think) embrace the worst case scenario to dull the hurt if it does happen. Just a lot of disappointment makes me cynical at times.

So very hyped for this game!!   Gonna be a classic!!

Note to Team Canada, more heart and soul types like Stephens, Speers, Jost....those guys, among others made me very proud to be Canadian last night.....like the song says "do that to me one more time" huh?

OK, just gonna point out, I have done everything possible to will Canada to win. I'm superstitious when it comes to this tourny, so...I tried to recreate everything I did last night to produce the same result....same clothes, EVEN ordered the exact same Chineese food from the same place and made sure it totaled the same 47 bucks even with the tip...LOL!

As an added bonus, I promised God I would go to church for the first time in 20 years if he let Canada win. Can't hurt, can it?  LOL!!

A well deserved victory by Team USA. Both teams played their hearts out. So very little separating these super talented teams. A shame somebody had to lose. US showed great grit by climbing back into this sucker. One of the greatest games I've seen in this tourny. No way should this game have ended in a skills competition. The two teams should have the option of playing another period if both agree.

Parsons now on a 22 game winning streak in World Jr's, OHL playoffs and Memorial Cup, that my friends, is friggin amazing. USA had a lot of great players, many many pros coming out of that team, but I was really struck by the play of McAvoy. Chabot reminds me of a young Shattenkirk.

How about this Troy Terry kid, huh?  He will be forever etched in USA hockey folklore. Kid deserves a nicknam...I've been calling him Mr.Poise...lol.

White showed some real nice finesse in close, that tip in was just sick.

I fell bad for Dubois, that miss will haunt him forever.

I don't fault Carter Hart for most of those goals, he gave us a shot to win, that's for sure.

Last summer, a lot of Flyer fans didn't want Gauthier because he was a bad skater. Either he had the biggest turn around of all time, or that was just a bad rap, cause that guy can outright fly, one of Canada's fastest forwards.

One of the things I love about this tourny is you get exposed to a player you have never seen play, they turn out to be heart and soul warrior type who you never forget. This year that player for me was Blake Speers, give me a team full of Speers anyday of the week. Man, that guy was probably Canada's fastest player but it was his work ethic that stuck out, gonna be cool to see him succeed in the NHL.

A LOT of people are saying that Mitchell Stephens is the key to the OHL championship (and maybe the Memorial Cup itself). He will most certainly be traded, and with each game he played for Team Canada, the price went up....up....up. This could be an unprecedented bidding war.

@jammer2

This entire tournament was great to watch.  I've managed to save enough vacation days to carry over into January to watch the majority of the tournament.  This was an epic performance by both teams tonight.  I thought this was going to be another win by Canada with the quick 2-0 lead.  Who would have thought that team USA would have come from a deficit of 2 goals twice.  Then add to the penalty kills this team fought off late in the 3rd and OT.  So exciting...  Hart played well,

I think what is so exciting is the enjoyment of watching these young superstars and knowing how important they all are to their respective NHL teams and their future in the NHL.  As hockey fans we are all winners tonight as these kids were awesome.  Calgary, Philly and Washington have some dandy goalie prospects.  McAvoy is Chara's replacement, and as someone else mentioned above the future defensive pair of Karlsson and Chabot...

Although Barzal didn't have the big game today, he probably was the player on Canada that I feared the most -   Greenway and Thompson were probably two of my favorite players to watch on Team USA. --

Then yea there is Troy Terry,  TJ Oshie the 2nd.  Just crazy stuff.  The kid has one great fast wrist shot.

This wasn't a game of mistakes but one of making the most out of opportunities.  Both teams capitalized and stole momentums, In the OT is was obvious both teams gave everything they had.

Epic.

Epic.

Regardless of the outcome, just as a pure fan of the sport, the passion and skill shown tonight was amazing fun.

White kinda reminded me of Stone a few years back. I can only imagine the trouble opponents of Greenway will be facing, that is a huge kid with some great skill, his stock shot through the roof. Clayton Keller looked terrific, just as advertised, makes me even more jealous that he spurned my Spitfires for the NCAA.

How about Chabot playing a stunning 44 minutes including OT, wow...don't ever recall hearing that type of number.

Great game with an epic back and forth flow to it. Parsons was easily the MVP for the States...of course the shootout specialist will be portrayed as the hero...there wouldn't be a shootout without Parsons excellent goaltending...especially in OT.

Did I mention I hate shootouts deciding the winner? The DH is a joke in baseball. And the DS is a joke for hockey.

Did I mention Barzal overhandles the puck? (see goal 3 US and his lame shootout attempt...at least make the guy stop it...of course in his defence if Dubois burys that great pass into a gaping wide open net there is no shootout)

Did I mention Strome was underwhelming?

Did I mention Jake Bean is a turnover machine?

Or how much we're going to hate that Chabot/Karlsson pairing on the Senators? What a complete stud this kid is. That word gets thrown around way too much for dmen...but Chabot IS a complete stud.

McAvoy was pretty good too.

Another great tournament comes to an end. Congrats to the US.

I just have to add. I have never watched a World Juniors game before, and I only watched this one because I was checking to see what was on NHL Network, but I will say CATEGORICALLY that this was the most entertaining hockey game I have watched in a VERY long time. What a freaking great hockey game! I was mesmerized. Couldn't leave the room unless there was a commercial. Didn't want to miss anything!

Two very evenly matched teams. All young players. Back and forth. I actually thought the US might be finished after Canada scored those two quick ones in the 3rd. A tribute to the US kids for shaking them off, never giving up, digging in and turning that 3rd period around.

I think it was so cool to have two young teams that don't yet have a maturity to lock it down like mature NHL teams know how to do when it counts face off. One scores two and the other comes back with two. SO much fun, the unpredictability of it!

THE PACE OF THIS GAME WAS INSANE! You NEVER see this in the NHL anymore. I am hoping this may mean it could come back someday soon, but I'll believe it when I see it. The passing at that pace was both fantastic when they connected and treacherous if they missed. Edge of your seat stuff.

Parsons is a winner. Period. Not a perfect game by him, but he did what all great goalies need to do to be successful and that is minimize damage from mistakes and make timely saves. His third period after giving up the quick ones, he really beared down.

You had to feel for Hart who also played well, as did the Canadian team. As has been said, it is a shame someone had to lose this game.

My only criticism is that I would have loved to see them play 5-on-5 hockey until someone scored and won the thing rather than the skills competition to decide it. Would have LOVED another 20 minutes of that hockey even if it meant the US might lose.

I picked a VERY good game to watch for my first-ever World Juniors game.

If I'm the team that drafted him 3rd overall I'm having serious misgivings. His skating and foot speed is not up to snuff. More importantly he lacks desire, loses battles he should win. He looks to be regressing, in short.

It's just a phenomenal tournament. The NHL goes on the backburner for me while it's on.

For sure, if Strome is not looking elite fast at this tourny, he WILL be just average in the NHL. He is NOT gonna be a first line center in the NHL. Arizona will try, maybe for years, before they realize they picked a dud. Maybe not a dud, but certainly not someone who commands a top 3 pick.....and that is a VERY big mistake for a franchise that is desperately trying to rebuild. The kind of pick that can easily cost a GM his employment.

Barzal was underwhelming through the tourny, but to be fair, at least in the gold medal game, his speed did come in handy while forechecking. He got to a lot of pucks that many could not get to and he did give a great effort. Overall he does get a fail, but I don't fault his effort. I fault the guys who picked him. More Speers, less Barzal Canada....

Well, what an amazing first game you picked to watch!  The pace was indeed incredible. Especially when you factor in these kids played a semi final knock out game the night before. I have always felt there should be a day of rest inbetween, just for player safety. They have the legs and lung capacity to handle it, but if there is a day of rest inbetween, then you can start to make a case for the "play till they drop" multiple OT scenario. You might wanna check out the Memorial Cup games in Windsor this year, they will have some great games at close to the same pace.

One thing that always strikes me, these kids pay so much attention to the little things, hitting players on their favoured side to receive a pass, ie forehand backhand....some of these kids are so smart, they will do a little chip pass off the boards in order to get a pass on a players forehand.....a desired play for the player receiving the pass....and the little touch passes, so much finesse in a game played at a fever pitch, some elite skill. In most cases, it's stuff they don't even think about, it's just ingrained in them from so many years of playing.

I have always been a big fan of Parsons. I knew early on that he would have to be solved to get Gold. We never really did. He bent, but did not break. He made so many spectacular saves when the USA was down multiple times by 2 goals, really held them in there until the US offense kicked into gear.

And to see these guys making some of the slick drops and blind passes that they are making--especially at those break-neck speeds--you would think they had been playing together for years. But no: 3 WEEKS! It's one thing to be able to skate as fast as they do. It is quite another to be able to think and play that fast too.

I've seen glimpses of that on the Wings with Athanasiou. And of course, on a somewhat regular basis, with Lidstrom and Datsyuk both playing with Zetterberg, I could see that kind of anticipatory passing. But not at that speed! I've watched Darren Helm, who is as fast as they come, for years. But Darren can't think and play as fast as he skates. He, thus, has trouble finishing much of the time. Not these boys! It's all done in stride and, like you said, almost effortlessly!

A VERY impressive showcase.

From what I understand, it's Bieber and Celine Dion for straight up future considerations. I heard no deal at first, cause the US was trying to add William Shatner into the equation, that is when Canada stood it's ground, no TRUE icons can change hands. ....ha ha.

Ya know, after the impressive showing by these 11 kids in the annual tourny, if you're a bottom six forward or a Flyer goalie, you can't be feeling to safe right now. Some will push for NHL playing time, but a few years from now, they will take NHL jobs, a LOT of AHL jobs. If  you are a bubble player on the Phantoms right now, you might wanna play with some desperation, cause these kids are a COM'IN~~!
