Greetings:

Here is Yahoo Sports' take on tonight's matchup:

http://www.cbssports.com/nhl/news/maple-leafs-host-flyers-in-crucial-east-contest/

Hakstol faces an interesting goaltending choice.  Mase has the hot hand but his lifetime numbers against the Leafs are much worse than Neuvy's.  Maybe our Captain continues a "hot streak."

Our history against the Leafs is impressive.

Let's keep it going....Let's go Flyers!

Best,

Howie

Maybe he is going with Neuvy because he beat them in January 2-1.

This is a must win game tonight!

I really dont understand starting Neuvy after Mason's recent play.   If you are looking at this you ride the guy who has been hot.   Not sure I understand this one....

I haven't looked at the standings really, can someone tell me whether we've reached the point where I should be cheering for the Leafs (ack!) tonight?

Thanks in advance.

That point will never come.

Ok, thank God, I feared we were perilously close....

I would have let Mason start this game.  I don't understand his decision-making.  Historically, he's ridden the "hot hand."  Guess it doesn't apply when it's Mason's hand.

Perhaps it has something to do with Masons record against the Leafs.

I read that and Hakstol said that wasn't a dominant factor.

I don't put a lot of stock in things like that, especially with Mason playing this well at the moment.  If neither goalie was ahead of the other at the moment, I could see how information like that might lead you to choose one goalie over the other.  But when you've got a clear hot hand to ride, I think you stay the course.  Hakstol seems to have followed that course in the past, particularly when it pertained to Neuvirth.

For the record, I think this is going to be a very difficult game.

1st question:  Do you play the hot hand goalie, with a bad record against the opponent, or play the goalie with the worst save percentage in the league--in a 4 point swing game--against the team directly in front of you in the playoff chase?

2nd question: Given how the Flyers have handled lineup decisions following a win, how is question #1 even a question today when Mason won his last start?

Posted

I don't put stock in it either. But while it wasnt the dominant factor it could be the one that tilted the scales. The problem here is you never know what goalie your going to get out of these two or what team for that matter.

Posted

Of course if we go back to our 'non-goal-scoring' ways, it really won't matter at all who's in goal...

Another game like Tuesday would be nice :VeryCool:

I would play Mason.  However I found Mason was fighting the puck last game.  Despite the win I recall a number of bad rebounds so I am not totally shocked with the decision....just hope it is the right one.

Supposedly they're going with Neuwirth which... WTF???  WHy?   Somehow there's an outside chance they can actually make the playoffs if they keep putitng their best foot forward and now... blah.

They're all must wins at this point. And I suppse this is the weakest opponent they'll face in the next 8 days.

The thing is that the HAVE to beat the Bruins and Leafs becasue they're direct competitors.  These are 4 point games.  The Jackets and Penguins are teams the Flyers aren't going to catch.

If they lose at all they're a bit screwed, but losing to the Leafs and Bruins hurts more.

Can't believe they have 3 games against the Blue Jackets left.

Yes they are all must win.

But focus on one game at a time don't look ahead. Focus on the next game.

Win that before anything else. Hopefully win in regulation.

Well these refs are absolutely atrocious.

That call on Gudas followed by the non call on Gardner is just outright bias and cheating as far as I'm concerned.

No mexcuse.
