Neuvy Rates Himself with Rask

Hello:

This was in today's Inquirer.  Our friend Neuvy rates himself with Rask.

http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/sports/flyers/Philadelphia-Flyers-Michal-Neuvirth-Tuukka-Rask-goalie-just-as-good.html

Granted, earlier in his career, Neuvy's credentials and performance suggested an up-and-comer.  Maybe the recent crease collapse and apparent concussion, coupled with the resigning, have literally and figuratively gotten to his head!

Remember he was concussed as still was when making that statement...

Rates himself with Rask???

That's like Schenn rating himself with Crosby.

It's more like ME rating myself with Crosby. It's that ridiculous.

Next he's going to start taking about stars and bears.

Neuvirth simply doesn't have any kind of constitution at all. You talk about a snowflake.

He gets injured when a puppy barks a town away, shrinks from a contract year, etc.

Wow. He better not be the plan for #1 next year. I'll kind of be hoping for a lockout.

Well, it was worth getting a laugh. But.....makes me wonder if he can learn from his past...or is deluded?

They're not comparable. Neuvirth is fragile. Rask folds like a cheap suit when the pressure is on.

I did see Neuvirth said he felt he could be as good as Holtby, though. I think Meltzer tweeted it. Have to look.

The year the Bruins lost to the Hawks he put up a 1.88/.940 in 22 playoff games. In the third round against the Pens he had a .5 GAA and a .985 SV%.

The next year he put up 1.99/.928 in the playoffs and his career playoff is 2.11/.930 in 47 games and regular season is 2.24/.924.

I think I might like that suit.

Okay, I'm going to play Devils advocate and not just because you brought up bears (Everyone knows that what Bryz really meant was that he was terrified of Neuwirth's Hershey Bears).

Anyway... I'm going to be the jerk here and play Devil's Advocate:

Rask's save % this year was .922.

Neuwirth's was .914.

Rask was clearly better, but A LOT better?  .8% better to be exact I guess.  That's less than 1/4 of a goal per game for Neuvy.

The Bruins had a goal differential of +23

The Flyers had a goal differential of -19

The Bruins Defense was a combined +22

The Flyers Defense was a combined  -21

The Bruins scored 232 goals

The Flyers scored 212 goals

The Bruins had the #1 Penalty Kill

The Flyers had the #21 Penalty Kill

The Bruins hnad the #2 Corsi for %

The Flyers had the #9 Corsi for %

Bruins #2 Shots against

Flyers #8 Shots against.

Most tellingly:

Boston had the #1 Corsi against in the league.

Our Flyers had the #15 Corsi against in the league.

Which is all just to say that as much as I could care less if Neuvy ever puts on a Flyers sweater again (and I kinda hope he doesn't) I can't honestly disagree that if He'd been on the Bruins, Neuwirth's stats wouldn't be similar or better than Rasks this year.  The Bruins were a significantly better team in every aspect of the game except total PP goals (which they were right behind the Flyers and they still kicked the Flyers butts on pp%).

Do I think he's better?  No, but looking at the teams, there's enough there to say that he very well may have been.  Who knows?  The Flyers sucked.  Flat out.  Of course Neuvy still would have missed a huge chunk of the season with an injury because hell, that's just what Neuvy does.

Because we don't have enough mega long contracts for people to complain about?

Could you imagine if we were paying $7million for the next 4 years for a goalie with a .922 save % ?

It would sure get everyone off the Voracek witch hunt!

Slow day.  Idle hands are the Devil's Advocate's play things... or something something yadda yadda.

Full stop. No, Neuvirth's was not.

It was an .891. https://www.nhl.com/player/michal-neuvirth-8473607

Here's the tweet I was thinking of earlier:

@radoran I'm probably overstating things, admittedly. My opinion is definitely colored a bit by his failure to close the deal on the Flyers in 2010, with among other things, this beauty:

All you folks when Neuvy goes on a complete tear next season and Hak claims he "is the best goalie in the world."   You all will be eating your words....
