Not that I disagree, I'm just confused because the PP was the best aspect of this team by far.

Kinda my point.  He fired the guy whose area of responsibility performed leaps and bounds beyond any other area of the game for this team.

Was he fired, or was it the end of his contract?  Could Mullen be interested in a head coaching position elsewhere?

Believe it was definitely fired. Hextall apparently said it was difficult to tell Mullen that they were going in a different direction.

It's a start but this is what i said in the thread "It's time" in the first post...at least Mullen is gone but i would have cleaned house.

Maybe they are not done.

Lappy coaches the PK and it struggled too it finished in the bottom 10 for the 3rd straight year under Lappy.

I would have fired all 3 and rebooted.

Did they ever score ONCE on the 5 on 3??? I don't recall it once. So NO! It was not good. Just take Ron's words...

“It’s not because of necessarily the power play,” which finished at 14th in the league. “It’s just one of those things where I feel like we needed a change.” It didn’t seem that the power play was struggling that much in terms of creating chances, but they couldn’t buy a goal at times in the later parts of the season.

Hextall had nothing but good things to say about the assistant coach. Mullen is “one of the nicest human beings and one of my favorite guys in the whole world.” Hextall told Mullen that he would be relieved of his duties on Monday, calling it “one of the worst days of my life because of it. I have an awful lot of respect for him.”

Buh bye Mullen take Lappy and Gordo with ya!!!

I believe they already announced Lappy would be returning. Not sure about Murphy. I wonder if the Flyers could interest Kimmo Timonen in coaching the D?

Yes as i suggested i would love Kimmo to get a shot.

Not sure he'd be a good coach or not just because he was a good player but i myself always love to not only have a teacher tell you how to do something but actually SHOW you goes a long ways!!!

All other NHL assistant coaches are being retained: defense coach Gord Murphy, penalty killing and rehab/extra skating coach Ian Laperriere and goaltending coach Kim Dillabaugh.

Looks like Lappy's position is really more for one on one work.

Yes. But he is in charge of a struggling penalty kill regardless. Once again hard to hold one accountable and the others not.

It is like punishing one of your children for bad grades and letting the other slide....who does that???

Coaching changes are related to performance and scapegoating.  Maybe they reckoned Mullen's was more performance related.  But I have to believe his dismissal is a symbol about accountability to everyone, maybe even Hextall.

I don't know why anyone would defend Mullen. He was doing such a ridiculously poor job, there really are no words.

He should have been fired awhile ago, not just not extended.

First, the powerplay was good early this year, but it was an abortion from Christmas on. It's a shame, too,  since the Flyers actually had the most opportunities in the league (a stat that astounds me).

But the thing that's important here is the "and forwards coach."

Did any of the forwards really excel in any kind of memorable way? Voracek has regressed, Giroux, etc. Until the Fil trade, Coots didn't seem to be getting any help figuring out his role.  Schenn.

And down the list.

I think a change in the forwards coach position is not only warranted, it's desperately needed.

Thanks for your time, Joey. There might be an opening in Colorado.

Head coaching job. If he's up for a head coaching job, some GM needs to be fired.

I honestly have even more respect for Hex with the hard decisions he has made of late. After 11 years, you can bet this was very much a tough thing to do, but he felt it was the best move for the org. I can't say I disagree with him. The PP really wasn't fantastic this year or last. In fact, I think he's bang on in his assessment.

I also agree with you completely in that others should also be let go. Maybe he's hoping this will serve as a warning to them. I don't know how much that really matters. I think certain coaches have just gotten stale after so long.

Wonder who will be the next guy to fill the opening???

Riley Cote??? :hehe:

Patrick Thoreson.   He can show them how to get hit in the...oh, nevermind.

I didn't realize Mullen was also responsible for the forwards.

Wow.  Didn't realize he was forwards coach.  That alone should warrant his departure.

Their PP is weird.  It's been productive in the aggregate, but seemingly inconsistent.  Also, the second unit has not been good, though I suppose that's a product of personnel moreso than strategy.

The PK is brutal.  Laperriere should take heat for that.  As should the personnel.  But, hey, let's keep Lappy and make Bellemare an alternate captain.

As much as people malign Gord Murphy, might he have anything to do with Provorov's strong year and Ghost's development last year and his second half?

Yes, I would think so.  I'm not super-focused on Murph.

I love Laperriere as a player and as a stand-up guy.  I think some (much) of the problem may be the personnel, but I'm looking long and hard at him if I'm the GM.

Personnel:   I love Simmonds and he hasn't done a horrible job, but if you have him playing the penalty kill, you have a SH personnel problem.

Wonder if Mike Knuble would be a good replacement?

He is coaching Grand Rapids Griffins. Thoughts. Complaints. Bitching welcome.
