Sept 1: More UK Links

LATE LINKS

Some new links have been found about the Bison trip to the British Isles.

BBC story: [Keefe Interview]

I still have not found a good game story on either Belfast game which at least says who scored for the Bisons. I don't think UK teams ever upload boxscores or summaries, at least for pre-season games. But lots of photos and links to buy tickets, which is good.

We now know that the Bison scorers were Zach Franko and Michael St. Croix. In goal, Byron Spriggs started and Dasan Sydora came in mid-way in the 2nd period.

The team's game story tells us all the Bison scorers. Here they are, in order:
1st period: Jonah Wasylak, Zach Franko, Adam Henry, Nick Zajac
2nd period: Blake Heinrich
3rd period: Michael St. Croix, Shawn Bowles

Byron Spriggs went the distance in goal. I have not seen in photos nor mentioned in a story last season's back-up goaltender Justin Paulic, nor any new recruit in net. The Bisons (and all teams for that matter) really need to upload roster pages for 2017-18.

Any player recruited should be known by now. There has been a trickle of last-minute announcements, none from the CW. Elite Prospects compiles a list at the link. CUSN has been the best source so far and their link is here, too.

I found some media stories about the recruits already announced through official sources. The WHL also sent out team-specific stories on recruits, some of which were re-posted and previously linked.

Instead of playing the Evil Monkeys, the Edmonton Greasers prospects will face a combined team of NAIT and MacEwan players. Will they be called the Oookins?

Sept 6: Schedules & Rosters

First, dealing with schedules, MRU has updated theirs to include the 3 games previously noted. However, they have changed opponents on Sept 27, so that they will play the Evil Monkeys instead of Bedrock U. However, Alberta does not list the game, and Calgary still does.

Not much for links on this game. The Lethbridge Tweets tell us that their goal scorers were Sanvido (with 2), White, and Moser.

The Evil Monkeys and Ooks started with what seems to have been quite a game. There are no game stories out there. All I know is that "Sanford got the winner". The Athabasca College Hockey Challenge continues with NAIT v Augustana on Saturday and Augustana v Alberta on Sunday.

So the Hørny Ønes take the weekend 9-8 on total goals. There are no summaries nor boxscores. The Lethbridge Twitter had regular updates and tells us that they held period leads of 1-0 and 2-0, and their goals came from Sward, Moser, Merkley, Sanvido, and Clowes. Ty Edmonds was player of the game. Nice turn-around for Lethbridge.

Though both teams are in the ACAC, this was game 2 of the Athabasca College Hockey Challenge, which includes the Evil Monkeys. Neither team had any links on their sites or Twitter, but for a retweet of the ACHC Tweet.

Augustana and Alberta now have two points each and their game on Sunday will be for the tournament title.

Perhaps the most significant game of the night was on Vancouver Island, where the VIU Mariners played their first game. Their opponent was the South Island Knights, a Senior AA team. They tweeted out a gif of the opening faceoff, and it is linked. The game was not final as I post.

UQTR 1 Concordia 4 : [CU S&R] : [CU Tweet]
RMC 0 McGill 8 : [LeagueStat]
Minot State 4 Briercrest 3 : [ACAC S&R]

Just as Lethbridge turned things around in game 2, so too did the Stingers. Both UQTR and Bedrock U had highly touted recruiting classes.

Kudos to McGill for uploading their game updates and other data into LeagueStat. All teams should follow suit.

Minot State was up to face the Clippers, perennial cellar-dwellers in the ACAC. A competitive series is something nice for Briercrest. They were outscored 144-73 last year.

Through a series of Monkey Tweets we can see that their goals were scored by Magee, Bredo, Legault, Kieser, Nichols, Lange, and Carroll. The period scores were 2-2 and 5-2. They also had a 7-2 lead in the 3rd period. So after a big-time scare in game 1, the Primates managed to avoid slipping on a banana peel and claim the ACHC title.

The picture below was tweeted out and it appears there is no Monkey logo on their white jersey as there was last year. And no yellow highlights.

Also, VIU piled on 3 more goals and won their late Saturday game 13-1.

The Hørny Ønes will carry the CW's colours all the way to London, Ontario where they will face future insurance salesmen, the UWO Urban Cowboys. This is a Friday-Saturday double-header. Neither team made the playoffs a year ago. That is nothing unusual for the Hørny Ønes, but the Urban Cowboys are usually near the top of the OUA West.

Sept 14: Bison Roster Uploaded

CW-2017-ManitobaBanner-116x73.jpg

Links:
¶ [Roster Page]
¶ [Geordie Keane @Elite Prospects]

The Bison website has finally uploaded a 2017-18 roster page. I expect/hope the rest of the dominoes to fall this week. The team has one new previously unannounced recruit, Geordie Keane from the Winnipeg Blues of the MJHL. His stats and the roster page are linked. His uncle is 3-time Stanley Cup champion Mike Keane and I believe former Bison assistant coach Billy Keane is his father. Geordie was the Blues' captain last year.

My concern is the lack of blue-line recruits. The Herd has 3 goaltenders, 7 defencemen, and 18 forwards. Just like last year. Here's the breakdown:

Goaltenders

Returning
1 Justin Paulic
34 Dasan Sydora
35 Byron Spriggs

This is the 3rd season for the exact same group of three. Spriggs won the starting job from Paulic and Sydora is a #3. In the past, Coach Sirant has shown that the back-up one year will be given a shot at being the #1 the next.

Defence

Returning
2 Adam Henry
3 Sean Christensen
4 Channing Bresciani
9 Rene Hunter
16 Blake Heinrich

Recruits
11 Victor Sharonov
25 Lucas Skrumeda

Departed
5 Lee Christensen
20 Garrett Johnston

Sharonov was on the roster for the 2nd semester but never dressed. The big Russian is an enigma. He somehow wound up in Florida. Maybe if we read Hillary Cinton's new book we will find out how he cost her the election. Johnston is gone after just one year, which is too bad. Christensen played 5 years and became a solid defender. On paper, the quality should be at least as good, with the benefit of added seasoning for the 5 returnees. Last year, several forwards played stretches on defence and that may be necessary again.

Forwards

Returning
8 Liam Bilton
10 Brett Dudar
12 Nick Zajac
13 Remi Laurencelle
14 Kamerin Nault
15 Shawn Bowles
17 Warren Callis
21 Brett Brooks
22 Brad Bowles
23 Joel Schreyer
24 Justin Augert
26 Quintin Lisoway
28 Brett Stovin
29 Jonah Wasylak

Recruits
18 Michael St. Croix
19 Calvin Spencer
20 Geordie Keane
27 Zach Franko

Departed
16 Jesse Paradis
19 Hudson Friesen
25 Shaq Merasty
27 Jordan Depape

Despite losing their 1st and 4th leading scorers, the recruits are likely a slight upgrade on paper. Depape and Merasty were CW superstars, but St. Croix and Franko are great replacements. Paradis and Friesen seldom played so anything from Spencer and Keane would be a bonus. The question I have is: Which of these players can play the point? It is hard to scratch 6 forwards every game. There are a load of returning 2nd year Junior A players, and often those players improve greatly as they become veterans.

- Merkley (PP) (Maltby,Valentino)
- Valentino (Merkley)
- Wardley (M.Maxwell, Clowes)
- M.Maxwell (Valentino)
- Valentino (Orban, Hughson)

Nice to see the Hørny Ønes waltz into nerdville and whip the Urban Cowboys. The faux westerners from UWO will always try in vain to act non-eastern. But really they all look like this:

I was able to watch a lot of this one on CanadaWest.tv, which was nice. Quite a good broadcast. The T-irds were being held to a 3-3 draw entering the 3rd period and then exploded with 5 unanswered goals. Each side will now play Holy Trinity to finish the Captains' Cup tournament.

Preview: Sept 22-23: Regina at Bisons

The whole CW is set to hit the ice this weekend for the first time in pre-season. The slate includes two inter-conference series and the Brick Invitational Tournament. The team rosters are not yet uploaded to the CW stats pages. Here's the outlook.

There are no preview stories posted as yet. The Bisons do have their roster page up for this season, but Regina does not. Nor does the CW stats page.

This series will be the Bisons' only home action in pre-season. Next weekend they travel down to UND before opening the season at home against UBC on October 7th.

The top four teams in the CW from a year ago hook up in annual Brick Invitational in Edmontown, with one game in the Town of Bedrock. MRU has yet to hit the ice. The rest have played with mixed results. Bedrock U split with Lethbridge and the Banjo Mutts lost to the Banjo Cats. The Evil Monkeys played two ACAC teams. I suspect that when the season starts these teams will look pretty good.

The Hørny Ønes delve into the ACAC for an opponent. Both Friday and Saturday games will be played in Lethbridge. They split with the Dinos and then went east to split with Western Ontario. I am interested to see if they could be a playoff team at long last. The sort of blew it last year in losing out to UBC at the wire.

For the second year in a row a team from the OUA has made a pre-season jaunt to Beautiful British California for a series. Games go Friday and Saturday. The Queens have started with a loss to RMC whilst the T-irds dusted off the SFU Clown. Queens qualified for the U-Cup last year. Unlike UBC's games against The Clown and Holy Trinity, this series will not be on CanadaWest.tv.

A few new links have popped up. MRU and Sask have uploaded their 2017-18 roster pages. That leaves Alberta, Lethbridge, Regina, and UBC stuck in 2016-17. However, Alberta has a preview story of their Brick Invitational and UBC has a game story of their win over The Clown.

Once again, no details anywhere. The win for the Dinos leaves the tournament standings like this:
Calgary 2-0
Regina 1-1
Saskatchewan 1-1
Manitoba 0-2

The Bisons have to be concerned about giving up 11 goals on the weekend. However, without access to summaries/boxscores it is hard to gauge just what the games were like.

Next weekend the Herd has their only home action of the pre-season against Regina Friday night at Seven Oaks and Saturday afternoon on campus.

The tweets tell us it was 1-1 after one and 3-2 after two, and Valentino notched another. So its back-to-back splits for the Hørny Ønes.

Sept 22: Bisons Win at Seven Oaks

I missed the first period but based on what I saw, here was the alignment:

MANITOBA

Goal
35 Spriggs (34 Sydora)

Defence
25 Skrudema - 4 Bresciani
2 Henry - 3 Christensen
9 Hunter - 16 Heinrich

Forwards
14 Nault - 27 Franko - 18 St. Croix
12 Zajac - 13 Laurencelle - 26 Lisoway
24 Augert - 22 B Bowles - 8 Bilton
15 S Bowles - 21 Brooks - 11 Sharonov

REGINA

Goal
3 Holtby - 35 Herringer

Defence
7 King- 28 Peel
25 Nagel - 8 Bourhis
2 Bear - 5 Burns

Forwards
32 Zborosky - 14 McNulty - 27 Fowlie
23 Magnus - 12 Stevely - 15 Hansen
22 Sparrow - 16 McPhee - 20 Duppereault
19 Marr - 13 Frei - 21 Langford

There was a fight between Brett Brooks and Corwin Stevely of the Cougars, so after that lines were shuffled.

Bison goals were scored by Zach Franko (with two) and Nick Zajac. Byron Spriggs went the distance in goal. For Regina, their second goal was by Zak Zborosky. They split the goaltending between Brandon Holtby and Michael Herringer.

This was the Thursday night opener of the Brick Invitational. That Calgary link has no evident unique URL, so might disappear when they play their next game.

Cain Franson and Chris Collins each scored twice for Bedrock U. Mitchell Lipon replied with two goals for the Bluegars. The goaltending was not stellar. Cam Lanigan stopped 20 of 27 for MRU and Jordan Papiny stopped 9 of 13 for Bedrock. The game was tied 3-3 entering the 3rd period.

A 3-goal outburst in the 2nd period paced the Monkeys to this victory. Jason Fram scored twice for the winners. Jordon Cooke stopped 35 of 39 for the Mutts. The goaltending duties were split by the Monkeys, with Brendan Burke stopping 13 of 14 and Kenny Cameron stopping 9 of 10.

Sept 23: Kittens Bounce Back for a Split

REGINA COUGARS 4
MANITOBA BISONS 2

Links:

First, here's how they lined up in this Saturday matinee rematch:

MANITOBA

Goal
34 Sydora (35 Spriggs)

Defence
2 Henry - 3 Christensen
9 Hunter - 4 Bresciani
16 Heinrich - 25 Skrudema
11 Sharonov

Forwards
27 Franko - 14 Nault - 18 St. Croix
24 Augert - 13 Laurencelle - 26 Lisoway
20 Keane - 22 B Bowles - 19 Spencer
17 Callis - 23 Schreyer - 8 Bilton

Scratches
1 Paulic (G) - 10 Dudar - 12 Zajac
15 S Bowles - 21 Brooks - 28 Stovin
29 Wasylak

REGINA

Goal
35 Herringer (3 Holtby)

Defence
2 Bear - 5 Burns
25 Nagel - 8 Bourhis
7 King - 4 Schacher

Forwards
32 Zborosky - 14 McNulty - 27 Fowlie
19 Marr - 16 McPhee - 21 Langford
23 Magnus - 15 Hansen - 17 Kosloski
20 Duppereault - 13 Frei - 22 Sparrow

Scratches
10 Coleshaw - 11 Cardiff - 12 Stevely
18 Luhning - 29 Predinchuk - 31 MacAuley

Each team has a boxscore link which has an error. The 2nd and 3rd Regina goals were on the powerplay. Those goes came within a period where the Bisons were assessed four interference goals, which was quite bizarre. On the night, the shots were 29-27 in favour of the Bisons. I saw Sydora play a full game for the first time. He's a #3 goalie. So far, I have not seen that last year's #2 (Justin Paulic) has made an appearance.

The Kittens are not a strong team, but they are better this year. They are now 2-2-0 in pre-season. They won't go .500 in the regular season, and will likely finish last, but they are on the right track.

Preview: Sept 29-30: Bisons to UND as Pre-season Wraps Up

This one was played on Wednesday, September 27th. It seems the Bluegars have taken a step back this year, as the recruiting list would imply. Jordan Papirny stopped 13 of 14 to get the win for Bedrock U. Colin Cooper stopped 25 of 28 for MRU before an empty-netter put it away. MRU finishes the pre-season at 1-2-0.

OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD

Friday, September 29, 2017

The Bisons had the night off. In fact, there were relatively few games on Friday night due to the NCAA weekend for most teams. For some reason the teams stateside have a preference for Saturday/Sunday games. Just one CW team was in action, there were two OUA games, and a host of college level games.

Sept 30: Bisons Lose at UND

The Bisons were blown out in the 2nd period, during which they were outscored 4-1. Remi Laurencelle opened the scoring, and Calvin Spencer scored in the 2nd period to make it 3-2. After Spencer's goal, UND had their onslaught to make it 6-2. The 3rd period was scoreless. Byron Spriggs went the distance in goal, stopping 29 of 35 shots.

The Bisons wrap up the pre-season with a 4-4-1 record. Things started strong in the UK, but fizzled in North America. Anyhow, things start for real next weekend when the Herd hosts UBC Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.

This was part of the "Captain's Cup" series. Both the T-irds and the Holy Trinity had already beaten SFU, making this the game for all the marbles. UBC ends the pre-season 3-1-0, without having played a team from the CW.

The rest of the CW teams which headed south had results consistent with their 2016-17 standings. Defending champion Alberta won, 7th place Lethbridge had a 3-goal loss, and last place Regina got skunked.

The Evil Monkeys are rolling through the pre-season. They are now 5-0-0. Although Regina and Lethbridge both missed the playoffs last year, they have both split their games against CIS teams so far. So how much of a co-relation will there be between pre-season and regular season results?

Sunday was a busy night of exhibition games. Unusually so, arising because the NCAA teams play a lot of Sunday games so it seems. And, there was even some Monday night action. The U of M also reposted dome UND links.

So the Hørny Ønes got whitewashed on tour. Still respectable games for a 7th place team. It was the third game in three days against the top-ranked team in the Atlantic Hockey Conference. How they wound up in that conference I'll never know.

This series will be in the unusual Saturday-Sunday format. The rest of the CW goes on the usual Friday-Saturday basis.

The stats links have nothing downloaded for the 2017-18 season. No schedules, rosters, etc. I emailed the CW to see what's up.

The CW coaches' poll was released this week. The results are:

T1. Alberta & Saskatchewan / 46 (4)
3. Calgary / 37
4. UBC / 24
5. *Manitoba / 23
6. Mount Royal / 23
7. Lethbridge / 18
8. Regina / 7

NOTES: First-place vote worth 7 pts., second-place worth 6 pts. etc. / *Awarded higher position based on greater number of higher placed votes.

Without league-wide roster updates I have been unable to look over all of the teams. I do not see UBC as improved, and they were 6th last year. In general, all teams other than MRU had a recruiting class sufficient to at least replace their graduating players.

The Bisons announced that Brett Stovin will be the captain, and the alternates will be defencemen Adam Henry and Channing Bresciani and forwards Michael St. Croix and Nick Zajac.

Last year these teams had close games, two wins each and the most one-sided was a 4-2 win by the Bisons. So I expect to see some good hockey this weekend.

Both games will be available at CanadaWest.tv. There is a charge, so check the links. They have one free game each weekend. This weekend it is men's soccer between Thompson Rivers and Fraser Valley. Don't complain. It's free.

This, and the rest of the opening schedule, are home-and-home Friday-Saturday series between provicial rivals. The Banjo Cats beat the Banjo Mutts and the Bisons in pre-season, going 2-2-0 against CW teams. They were then blitzed twice in the States by 8-0 margins. Have they already crashed to Earth? Meanwhile, the Mutts were only 1-3-0 in pre-season. On paper, they should be even stronger than the 1st place team and conference and national runners-up they were a year ago.

I don't remember the last time a team in the CW played just 3 pre-season games. But that's what the Bluegars did this year. The Monkeys had a good pre-season, ending with a loss in Minnesota on a weekend split. MRU did lose more than they gained in the graduation/recruitment sweepstakes, so everybody will be looking to see if they will slide this year.

The Hørny Ønes seem to be getting better every year, although they still missed the playoffs (again) last year. This will be a stern test for them. The Bedrock Dinos have a large and WHL-laden recruiting class. They did lose some veteran leadership which could hurt them in the long run. We'll see.

Oct 6: Favourites Dominate Opening Night

With the Bisons playing Saturday-Sunday, all we have on opening night is the out-of-town scoreboard. However, there was an afternoon story about 150 WHL grads playing in the CW. More on that later.

The opening night of the CW indicates that the conference may be subdividing into haves and have nots this year. The Evil Monkeys have added a load of players the last two years and are poised to make a run for the title. On the other hand, MRU may have peaked a year ago. This was a whuppin. Seven different Monkeys had one goal each, and Brendan Burke made 24 saves for the shutout. Wyatt Hoflin started for the Bluegars stopped 23 of 27 through two periods, and Colin Cooper stopped 10 of 13 in the third. The rematch goes Saturday at MRU.

The Banjo Cats were doing fairly well in pre-season, gaining a win over these very same Banjo Mutts and a split with the Bisons. Then last weekend they lost a pair of 8-0 games in the States and here they got skunked by their northern hillbilly brethren. The Mutts had 8 different goalscorers. Jordon Cooke stopped 20 of 22 for the win. Michael Herringer stopped 37 of 45 in his debut loss. He looked good in pre-season but the Kittens' blue line can have a negative effect on a guy. Saturday's rematch goes in Saskatown.

Oct 6: Bisons Lose Opener

It is the first Saturday night of the season and the CW's crappy website is still not working. This could have been tolerated in past seasons when they had LeagueStat current and operational. That is no longer the case. They spent all their money on a new logo, which is nice but non-essential. The archives (to the extent they even have archives) will remain there. But now we are stuck with the stats links from the main page, where they have no rosters, no game day scoreboard, and boxscores list only the starting lineup. Last year they brought in "Hockey Tech" for links from the website. No more. Very disappointing. Now the CW site is the same as the US site. (Did the bozos at the CIS realize their new abbreviation would be "US" when the switched to U-Sports?)

The Bison opener was a strange one. The Bisons opened strong and at one point held a 13-2 lead in shots, bit just a 1-0 lead on the scoreboard, by defenceman Sean Christensen. Then Justin Augert was assessed a borderline highsticking penalty. The T-irds' powerplay was nothing special but then notched a goal out of nowhere, by Matt Ravel.

The 2nd period was back-and-forth, and UBC emerged with a 3-2 lead. Byron Spriggs appeared to choose to play the puck rather than pounce for a faceoff on the go-ahead goal, Quinton Lisoway then tied the game, and then a shorthanded goal on a fumbled pass put the T-irds ahead to stay.

The 3rd period was one Spriggs would love to forget. He gave up 3 goals on 11 shots, and 6 goals on 27 shots on the night. Matt Hewitt stopped 32 of 36 shots for the win.

Here's how they lined up:

This was as one-sided as it sounds. Tyhe shots were 38-18 for the Monkeys. Zach Sawchenko had his first start for the Monkeys and got the win. Wyatt Hoflin was tagged with the loss for MRU. IMO that cartoonish new logo in and of itself knocks MRU down a peg or two.

Matthew Greenfield stopped 41 shots in taking the loss, Garret Hughson stopped 37 for the win, and Mitchell Maxwell scored the winner. Lethbridge has a new home jersey with their traditional logo.

Oct 8: Bisons Bounce Back, Beat Birds

The Bisons once again got off to a great start by dominating the shot clock. However, they were not able to cash in and in fact rallied from down 0-2 to win this one. The final shots on goal were 29-16 in favour of the Bisons, including 14-5 in the 3rd. Those numbers reflected the flow of the game.

Captain Brett Stovin scored the winner though suffering a broken nose. Both he and Quintin Lisoway left the ice for repairs with a towel around their face, though neither incident drew a penalty. There were a lot of controversial calls in the game. But by the 3rd period the players had calmed down a lot.

Neither side switched their roster from Saturday. UBC switched goaltenders. UBC really only used 10 of the 12 forwards on any sort of a regular basis. Here's how they lined up:

Through two games, Spriggs has an .814 save percentage. That number needs to get better for the Bisons to host a playoff series. Also, they need to finish above .500 at home.

As for UBC, the pace and physicality took their toll. Their whole lineup walked gingerly onto the ice for the 3rd period on Sunday. Do they have what it takes to grind their way through tough series like this one all year?

It is very early but it appears that the die may have been cast for the balance of the season. Sask and Alberta had dominating sweeps. Manitoba, Calgary, UBC, and Lethbridge all had splits. And teams named "Cougars" have had it rough.
