Looks like the Flames Overpaid for Harmonic

Travis Harmonic asked for a trade last year to be closer to his family for personal reasons, well he got that trade but did the Flames overpay to get him?

The Flames sent a 2018 first round pick, a 2018 2nd round pick and a second round pick in either 2018 or 2019 to the Islanders and will get in return the Islanders’ fourth round pick in 2019 or 2020, depending on conditions.

Harmonic's arrival likely means the trade deadline pick-up Michael Stone won't be returning. The 27-year-old defenseman was acquired by the Flames for a third-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft and a conditional fifth-round pick in 2018.  That fifth rounder goes away if the Stone signs elsewhere.

This all seems like overpayment to me as Harmonic had 14 pts and was  +/-   -21 last season, playing in only 49 games.

Good maybe my Flyers sign him for a vet presence on the blueline....just throwing that out there....

This does seem like overpayment.

However, if Hamonic, who admittedly, has mediocre numbers coming off his year with the Isles, suddenly starts playing like a superstar because he is somewhere he WANTS to be, then one could say 'Calgary got their man' and all the picks given up are a moot point.

Let's also not forget that Calgary, right now, has many good young players at the NHL level or close to it already.

So, is it possible they viewed giving up the picks they did for Hamonic as 'dealing from strength'.

Sure, it'd be nice to have the picks, but if you already have solid to great NHL ready young players, couldn't you afford to give up picks to get a defenseman you really wanted to add to your core?

Again...this is all assuming Travis Hamonic plays really well for the Flames.

If Michael Stone is indeed not going to return due to Hamonic being there now, Calgary is letting walk a pretty good defenseman right there........albeit an injury prone one.

Yes. I agree on the whole that the Flames paid quite a bit to get Hamonic.

And if he has another mediocre, injury plagued season, then we can criticize them all we want for it.

But if Travis has a great year, the Flames young forwards core make more strides forward, and the rest of the Flames' D plays like they are capable of, then this high price may have very well been worth it for Calgary.

I don't think this is an over payment for Hamonic. You gotta give up good offers to get a good/great return. This is going to be worth it and Hamonic is really going to help the Flames be an even better defensive team.

The Flames have also signed college free agent Spencer Foo who is only 23 so he is pretty much our 1st round draft pick for 2018 that the Flames gave up for Hamonic.

Well on paper they should have a pretty damn good defense now that they brought Stone back.

And if Smith can stay healthy they could make a nice run this year.

There is a lot of hype here in Calgary that we have one of the best defense in the NHL. On paper it sure looks that way.. now they just have to prove it on the ice.
