Some thoughts on these updated signings:

Karl Alzner to Montreal--- Sure, the Habs gave up Beaulieu and lost Emelin, but the additons of Schlemko and now Alzner on defense (along with acquiring a Mr. Jonathan Drouin up front) seems to have made the Canadiens a more dangerous team.  I always like to make fun of the Habs, saying they are Carey Price or nothing, but this year........hmm....

Steve Mason to Winnipeg---- You wanted to be a starter, Steve, ya got it!  And in a hockey crazy market (not that Philly wasn't hockey crazy) like Winnipeg where they have no other pro teams to criticize but yours (UNLIKE Philly...hehe), AND you will be a starting goaltender in possibly the toughest division in hockey, the Central seeing the likes of Chicago, Minnesota, St. Louis and Nashville on a regular basis........yea, good luck with that Steve.....shoulda taken a nice back up role on a contender.....

Dan Girardi to Tampa Bay--- Yikes! I hope Stevie Y knows something we don't!  I LOVE the job Yzerman has been doing...even when some questioned some of his moves before. And I KNOW the Bolts needed at least one more established vet on defense.

But Girardi? I always liked Dan Girardi, but if the Rangers, who need D-men also, didn't want him.......well, let's hope the state of Florida agrees with Girardi's aching body and he revitalizes himself a bit.

One GOOD thing here...... 3M isn't a ton of money to spend on a veteran defenseman, AND Girardi won't have to be a top pair guy in Tampa Bay...that is Hedman and Stralman's job.

Brian Boyle to New Jersey--- Disappointing. For me anyways. I was hoping to see him return to the Lightning, or maybe even sign as a bottom six Center for the size challenged Minnesota Wild.  Oh well, maybe the Devils fall out of contention yet again, and Boyle can be traded over at the deadline.... :cooldude:

Chad Johnson to Buffalo---- Nice backup piece to Robin Lehner while the younger goalies in the system continue to mature. Good pick up Sabres!  Now, just hope Johnson isn't pressed into duty more than he should (I.E. starter due to long term injury to Robin Lehner), as Johnson never seems to do well beyond the role of very capable backup.

Tommy Wingels and Patrick Sharp to Chicago---- Say what you want about the Blackhawks "declining", but these are two very nice complimentary pieces to add to the Hawks already good top end skill.

We all knew the Hawks, due to monster contracts to both Kane and Toews will have high end talent supplemented by almost new players to make the money work under the cap.

So signing solid vet players who may still have a bit left like Wingels and Sharp is very nice for Chicago.

Wow at Christian Folin to the Kings.

I thought the Wild were gonna tender him something and have him partially replace the traded Marco Scandella.

Folin isn't a household name by any stretch, but he has many of the traits that Scandella had...decent size, good point shot.

Only thing he really lacked was NHL experience compared to Scandella. And while he CAN play physical, he often didn't use his size as much as he probably could have.

At best, nice bottom-mid pair signing for Los Angeles, at worst, the Kings get a guy who makes a very nice extra D-man.

Luke Witkowski signing with the Red Wings is kinda an ironic thing.

Bolts sign Dan Girardi, who apparently isn't as mobile as he once was....so that, in essence seemed to push out Witkowski who was a 6th-7th D-man for Tampa Bay.

But the REASON Witkowski was a bottom pair/extra defenseman is because of his skating. It's just barely up to snuff with NHL speed.

The guy is tough, plays a mean game, and has reasonable hockey sense, but often gets in trouble when dealing with really speedy skaters.

I dunno. I guess I would have stuck with Witkowski at under 1M instead of Girardi at 3M if they both have issues with skating.

Then again, perhaps Yzerman prefers the NHL experience and former top pair experience Girardi offers in spades over Witkowski who has seen most of his days as an AHL regular and part time NHL'er.

Tampa Bay will miss Luke's junkyard dog mentality though.

Some things I noticed .....

That is a chunk of change that SJ just dished out ......

I still think the Flyers add one more forward. I'll call it right now - Drew Stafford to the Flyers. 3 years/$7.5 million. He'll fill in on a line with Lindblom and Patrick and is familiar with Hakstol. Still need Hextall to free up some contracts, namely Read, Raffl and Weise.

I mentioned it earlier. I barfed at Vlasic's contract.

Like I said, I love him, but 7 million a year for a defensive defenseman. SEVEN MILLION A YEAR FOR 8 YEARS.

He is the highest paid defensive defensman of all time.

The Oilers are going to have fits trying to get Larsson resigned in a few if Mcdavid gets 13.25 million for 8 and Draisaitl gets 8-9 million

Fortunately for you!

If Thornton had signed somewhere like, oh I dunno, Los Angeles, Chicago or New York, you probably would have had to change your screen name. ;)

No, but I would have felt crushed

11.5. The current hit doesn't include Thornton.

Still. 11.5 million with

Hansen/Thornton/Pavelski

Boedker/Couture/Donskoi

Meier/Hertl/Ward

Karlsson/Tierney/Labanc(or Sorenson, Carpenter, O'Regan)

Martin/Burns

Vlasic/Braun

Dillon/Demelo(or Heed, Simek)

Jones

Dell

We could afford to upgrade a few places if so inclined. Depends on how Meier does year two as I expect nice things from my moosehead like I did with Drouin/Mackinnon/Ehlers and currently expect from Nico hischier. If O'Regan can translate his AHL player of the year to NHL or Heed can get some of his AHL goods translated to NHL

In any case, Happy to have 11.5 million to play with and still some potential short term upgrades to be had. Jagr? Markov? Vanek. keep marleau short term?

Tierney isn't signed yet. And you have to be careful with those two new deals kicking in next year. You only have about 4 million in cap space for next year beyond what you have this year, with Hertl needing a new deal and needing replacements for Ward/Hansen. You're not getting Radulov or Markov on 1 year deals, so that all has to factor in.

I don't want Radulov.

Markov I could see for a 2 year deal.

Tierney is a 4th line C who is not exactly going to break the bank. Hertl hasn't earned remotely close to a scary contract yet with all his injuries.

Ward has been regressing hard. Hansen i have barely seen enough of to comment.

What a Frankenstein-like collection of players the Vancouver Canucks seem to have for this coming year.

Almost seems they are more expansion-like than the newer Vegas Knights! :bigteeth:

Look here...

Nucks still have the aging Sedins at 36 yrs old apiece....then for free agents they:

---Got Sam Gagner formerly a Blue Jacket

----Michael Del Zotto formerly a Flyer

----Anders Nilsson formerly a Sabre

----Patrick Weircoch formerly a Senator/Avalanche

----And Alexander Burmistrov formerly a Jet.

Seriously....did Vancouver participate in some secret expansion draft?

They got a bunch of players, who while not terrible, are basically guys with some significant flaw or two or guys that other teams simply didn't care to sign.

And the ONLY two players Vancouver has signed long term are Loui Eriksson and Brandon Sutter.

Can we say rebuild....like NOW, Canuck fans?? :ermm:

What are the Jets doing??   Why do they even want Kulikov and why did they pay him so much??  That is crazy. Don't agree with Stevie Y signing Girardi. In my mind, that is maybe not trusting the development of Kokkoekoe (sp, lol) er, um...Slater...
