Zetts to retire this season or next....

Zetterberg stated yesterday that he misses his native Sweden and wishes to return home....BEFORE his long term deal is up. He stated that he would only play one or two more years, leaving the Wings swinging in the wind for the last two years ofhis deal. Due to one of the most outrageous rulings of all time, the new CBA states that the cap "recapture" would kick in for the Wings....so, instead of the Wings being left with a cap hit of 1mill for each of the last two years, the Wings would get charged a WHOPPING 5.1 mill for each year he retired. Just how this "recapture" is retroactive is beyond me, it seems outrageous to have it retro like that....just a pitful ruling. Do the Wings trade Zetts to avoid the cap hit, can they trade Zetts with the recapture hanging over his head? I can't anyone paying 10.2 mill for a player who is retired, no matter how he would help a playoff run. What a MESS!!

The Coyotes?   Is it just $10.2 mil in cap or in real money?

On the other hand, the Coyotes may be soon getting to where they may want to spend money on some actual players they have coming along.

I'm thinking the Golden Knights are a team that could take on the salary cap. Next year they only have 34M committed to the Cap, and in 2019 there is $58M available in cap space.

The cap recapture is because the Wings had a $7.5M player on a cap hit of $6M for nine years.

Honestly it is stark evidence that the player was colluding with the team to circumvent the cap and never really planned to play the two $1M seasons.

And evidence that the owners - insisting upon on cap - would do whatever they could to circumvent it as well.

Zetterberg was 29 when he signed a 12 year deal. Those deals are now illegal.

It *does* look stinky as hell. This is an obvious, wink...wink...nudge kinda thing. When you say it like that, it makes the league's stance a little more palatable.

Maybe a tad more believable if he did not talk about missing Sweden and prognosticating when he might leave...which just happens to coincide with his 1 mill season kicking in...ha ha. Just springing it on everyone might have made it a bit more real.

IIRC, they can't trade the cap recapture away, since they benefitted from the lowered cap hit. So no matter what, if Zetterberg retires, the Wings are the ones that see the cap ramifications.

Ahhh, this makes perfect sense, good point. Geez, after all these years, Datsuyk AND Zetts both end up screwing the Wings,...at least Pavel's deal was tradeable. It is horrible that Zetts is gonna do this, he OWES this team.

When he signed the deal there was no cap recapture.

The Wings knew damn well that Zetterberg wasn't likely to play the two $1M seasons.

This is their penalty for trying to circumvent the cap.

They deserve every penny.
