Panik in the Desert

  Move between the Hawks and the Coyotes today who traded two underperforming wingers in the hope of waking them up.

 

  The Hawks traded Richard Panik (6 goals 10 assists) who has been a frequent scratch of late to the Coyotes along with meh prospect Laurent Dauphin in exchange for struggling Anthony Duclair who has been spending more time in the press box and in the dog house than on the ice with his 9 goals and 6 assists along with one time defensive prospect Adam Clendening who is now more or less AHL fodder.

 

  Two years ago Duclair came to the 'Yotes from the Rangers in the Yandle deal and had a great rookie year scoring 20 goals but has done little since, last year Panik had a 22 goal season but after a decent start has done nothing for two months this season. The hope is that it wakes the two of them up. Duclair may be the first piece moved out of the desert as the team has been rumored to be nearing yet another housecleaning and yet another rebuild. IMHO Duclair is by far the better prospect of the two although Panik can score a bit.

Like you said... a change of scenery might help them both.  Kinda of a Meh type of deal for me.

I don't know about the two of them but i think Duclair will flourish with the Hawks.

 

It almost looks like this over the course of time:

 

To Arizona:
Hjalmarsson (4mil)
Panik (2.8mil)

for
Connor Murphy (3.8mil)
Anthony Duclair (1.2mil)
1.8mil in cap space.

Putting aside that both Panik and Duclair have been struggling this year, I think this deal is a win for the Hawks.

 

Sure, change of scenery MIGHT help both, but really.... Duclair, struggling, 22 yrs old and will now have a better support cast around him vs. Panik, struggling, 26 yrs old, and will now have LESS of a supporting cast.... well, not too hard to figure who may have the better go of it moving forward.

 

Add to the fact that Panik is an older player making more money (then will be a UFA after next year) vs Duclair at 22 with still time to work out whatever ails him, making less money and will only be an RFA at this season's end (and because he is having a subpar year, can likely be re-signed for a very reasonable rate if Chicago chooses to tend him an offer), and again, this deal screams "WIN" for Chicago.

 

And let's forget the secondary guys involved in the deal, Clendening going to Chi, while Dauphin goes to Arizona.... as those guys just look like the types that won't be making much of an impact on their new teams.

 

I was a fan of Richard Panik once.

He came up through the Tampa Bay Lightning system, did very well for them in both Norfolk and Syracuse, and had flashes of brilliance with the Lightning once called up.

Heck, I even compared him to a Claude Lemieux type player because he seemed to have the right mixture of scoring touch, size for grinding and checking, and has a bit of an edge to him that leans towards the agitator side...and sometimes makes borderline plays that put him somewhere between 'tough hockey' and 'hey, watch yer step' hockey.

 

Alas, for whatever reason, Panik couldn't make the proper transition to the NHL with the Bolts.

His consistent AHL scoring became scarce at the NHL level, and his penchant for boldness and playing on the edge disappeared a bit with it, as he became a somewhat more timid player playing with the 'big boys' in the NHL.

 

Bolts waive him, he gets picked up by Toronto...again, flashes of brilliance, followed by long stretches of nothing, waived again, ends up in minor league Toronto-ville, then gets traded to Chicago....flashes of brilliance again (sense a pattern here guys?), then not much of anything else...and now in hockey hell, Glendale, AZ, USA.

 

If Panik couldn't make things work playing with ultra skilled players in Tampa Bay, Toronto, AND Chicago, who really thinks he will do anything with the void that is the Coyotes???

 

As for the Yotes, really, just what the heck are those guys doing over there?

Duclair may have been struggling, but to not even get picks (even if it was a 4th or 5th rounder) back for Duclair is just criminal.

 

I get the Coyotes likely need to clean house (AGAIN!) and rebuild, but you can't do that if you are getting back players who aren't gonna do much for you, have low ceilings, and not even get draft picks or at least middling upside prospects in return for your young players like Anthony Duclair.

 

Just a complete sad state of affairs with the Coyotes, and I rank them as THE worst franchise in the NHL right now.....yes, even worse than Buffalo, who, at least have a shot with better goaltending and some more line depth, to get better and be a contender sooner than later.

I watched the Wild get a W the day that the trade happened, the hawks did horribly that night.
