Matt Moulsen

The story of Matt Moulsen is the story of the Buffalo Sabres over the past decade.

The Sabres in 2013-14 were awful and traded their iconic (for them) sniper Vanek for Moulsen and a couple of picks. Moulsen had come off three consecutive 30 goal seasons with the Isles, he was a good soldier with the Sabres and later was dealt to the Wild for more picks. In the offseason Moulsen was resigned after a 51 point season to a 5 year 25 million dollar deal.  The hope was that Moulsen would be a nice bridge as the picks developed along with other acquired picks in their most recent selloff.

The picks haven't worked out although the best of them, Colin White was dealt for Robin Lehner who for better or worse has more or less been the Sabres starting goalie for several years. The other picks have been Brendan Guhle, Vitak VAnacek and Chad Krys are all looking like busts which is typical of the Sabres drafts over the past decade other than Eichel.

But enough, this is about Moulsen and his 25 million dollar five year deal. He has been awful, 41 points his first year, easily his best followed by 21 points in 81 games and 32 last year. After going pointless in 14 games this season the exasperated Sabres shipped him to the minors but instead of sending him to Rochester he was 'loaned' to the Kings organization where he plays for the Ontario Reign not just out of Buffalo but out of the organization, out of sight and out of mind but the Sabres are still paying his entire contract. The Sabres explained that they preferred not to have Moulsen join the Amerks as they wanted ice time for their own kids. Riiight.  Kids like 32 year old Kevin Porter, AHL vets Seth Griffith and Kyle Criscuolo. On the Amerks roster only one player, CJ Smith could be realistically called a prospect. Most of the roster consists of poorly selected Sabre draft picks.

Moulsen has quietly went to Ontario, a man without an organization who has put up 6 goals and 20 assists for the Reign hoping someone will give him a chance to mount a comeback in the NHL playing hard every night, admitting that he has been heckled by AHL fans nightly and keeping his head down. The Sabres in the mean time are paying him to play Hockey elsewhere this year and the next.

There are worse things in life than making $5 million a year to play in the AHL.
