Where are the Fire Hakstol chants now?

  1. 1. Do you still want a different coach at the end of the Season?

Recommended Posts

This team has is 17 - 6- 1 since December 1st and is currently the third team in the Metro division and the team wants to move even higher in the standings.   After a lackluster first period against the Redwings. Konency stated that Hakstol spoke to them reminding them what their goals were for the season.  He didn't yell, scream as that isn't his style, but what he said was effective as the team found a way to win even when they didn't have their best effort.

So I ask do you still want Hakstol fired?  I know I was one of the few here that didn't see a reason to fire the coach when the team struggled through a 10 game losing streak.  There were several threads here asking for the ax.  What do you all think now?

I have never been on the fire Hak band wagon but He certainly seems to be doing a better job of making adjustments lately. The team also seems to be responding well as opposed to pouting about changes. The goalie play has improved too. That also helps to cover up the short comings of some of the defensive pairings. Even MacDud has been off of my **** list but I would still love to see him traded/moved while he looks like he belongs in the NHL......

I could be wrong, but I think a lot of it is the growing pains, with the team (rookies), with the coach, etc.  They haven't been horrible all season, actually quite the contrary, but they have had their moments.

I am more concerned with their lackluster power play and whoever the hell is coaching that.

We knew this would be painful, would take some time.  Maybe we are starting to see the turning of the corner, the coming of age, so to speak.

They are fun again!

I recall there being a few articles/quotes about how, after the losing streak, Hakstol adjusted a few things (and maybe at the urging of some players) and since that time the team has really responded.  Have to give him a lot of credit for that.  Some coaches may have been reluctant to change our outright dismissed it, but he embraced it.  If he didn't change, I think those chants would still be very loud.

He's become pretty good at mastering combinations.  Obviously the G to wing/C at center has worked marvelously (credit both G and C as well).  But getting TK out of the basement onto the top line has been a great move.  Same with moving Raffl up and V down.  I still don't know what's going on in the bottom six, but I think he found a way to get players going.  Also, Provorov and Ghost have been pretty solid.  Still trying to figure out the bottom pairings though.

Of course the handling of Sanheim and the goalies is a bit maddening.  As is the lack of emotion on the bench.  But those decisions pale in comparison to how he has this team playing overall at this time.  Again, I think he's done pretty well recently with the roster he's been given.

Look, I think the questioning and calls for a firing were fair given how the team was playing at the time.  It's easy to call out folks for saying those things now when the team is playing so well.  If they keep this up, hopefully we don't need to have a discussion about it again.  However, if they falter or go through a prolonged losing streak again, I think it will be fair once again to question what's going on.

It's like the tale of three seasons for the Flyers.

They started out 8-6-2. Not great, not bad. Mediocre.

Then they went 0-5-5, (8-11-7 overall).

Now they're on a 16-5-1 run.

Their current run is more than a quarter season, and almost half of the games played so far. So, it's more than just a fluke or luck.

Definitely seeing progress!

You know, honestly, with all the rookies, etc...

If you simply take out the 0-5-5 (you obviously can't, but...)   you have 24-11-3.   The 0-5-5 was the result of young kids, etc. who lost a couple in a row, it hit their confidence, etc. and it snowballed.

I mean, 24-11-3 ain't too shabby.

I was on the "fire Hakstol" bandwagon.  I still don't like some things, but it's currently working.   I won't retract the "Fire Hakstol" chant until the end of the season.   Still a hell of a lot of hockey.   But again, even when you add the losing streak in, you have 24-16-8.   It's really not bad all things considered.   Enough for 3rd in the division, which is probably better than any realistic optimist could have hoped for.

I can't say I'm sold on him at all, but the recent streak does give me pause as far as firing him goes. I think he has been out-coached in game a number of times this season, but maybe that's a question of learning as well. Much like our many rookies, there is likely a learning curve for Haks coming into the top league in the world from a league that simply is not that.

That said, there is a lot to question about his decisions as well. To what extent is sheer talent propelling the team right now, compared to systems and what not. Given the riches we have with regards to young talent who have been a huge benefit this year, it's entirely possible our recent surge is mostly owing to highly talented players taking a major step forward (Provo, TK, even Hagg).

It's always hard to figure out what amount of that is because of coaching and what amount is on the players alone. Given that, I say Hak has done enough to stick around. This is especially true if the team actually makes the playoffs this year in a non-wild card spot. I don't think anyone saw that coming. I know I certainly didn't. That result alone is enough to keep him around I think. It's not as if this team was a playoff given this year by any stretch.

And I remember at the time how hollow the "but we're still picking up points" line sounded to fans.

But both Hak and Hex were right. Take those 5 OTL loser points away, and we're below Carolina, just above Detroit in the standings. Obviously, every team has loser points too, but in the context, it was true that the Flyers were still hanging in there despite the maddening ways in which they were losing.

Those points are coming in handy now.

Well, that's a glass half-full way of looking at it.

Just to play devils advocate, they don't cough away 5 points they probably should have had and you're unbelievably looking at the first place Philadelphia Flyers.   I think, to your point about "every team has loser points," it's likely if you gave every team points they shouldn't have tossed away that they're no longer in first.

Clement was saying last night that the team has the look of one that is nearing the end of their .750 winning pace. If you look at the last few wins, we are stealing points and usually a precursor to a bit of a cooling off.

I don't think he meant losing streak, just not continued .750 play.

Take care of TB on Thursday, and then they get a week to rest.

Still on an AWFUL short leash with me....just hate his lack of emotion, inability to call a time out or make a goalie change at the right time....how's he's using Elliot, how he's using Nuevy, Sanhiem, etc. etc etc.

I just don't think his "coaching" and decision making is the biggest reason for this recent uptick in W's for the fly guys....but I DO KNOW that all things listed above are a DIRECT result of his coaching....

I watched nearly all of the games in the winless streak.

The team was not playing poorly, They did throw in a clunker vs Vancouver and San Jose but other than that they frittered away wins... they played 56 minutes of great hockey in the loss to the Pens, there was a 4 minute stretch where the wheels fell off.  That game was indicative of a youngish team needing to learn how to close out hockey games.

I was not on the fire Hakstol bandwagon.  I do not like how he'd been handling Sanheim but now that's fixed too.

For me to join the chorus for firing the coach the team needs to look listless for extended periods of time. That has not happened. He has done some pretty good things too, Provorov and Ghost....**** dude, that's an enviable top pairing for any team. Moving G to wing and trying Koneckny on that line, another good move.  It helps that the players respond to the moves as well.

I hate it when the knuckleheads show up after a bad loss and say no heart blah blah blan, it's not true this team competes, they don't pack it in they keep skating. They are not bad.  At the moment they are exceeding my expectations, but not by much I think there is talent on the squad.

I hear you on the last part of your post.  What do you think is the biggest reason for this recent uptick?  To what extent do you think Hakstol deserve credit?

I'd fire the entire coaching staff, minus Dillabaugh and Knoblauch. The handling of Sanheim has been absolutely atrocious and the over reliance on mediocre veterans are just two of a multitude of reasons. His handling of the goaltending situation has been brutal for two years. Running guys into the ground is absolutely unnecessary. I also look at his mishandling of Konecny. Nope, I hate the man and want him gone.

So ?

Has he iced a team that has quit, won depsite him, or continued to insist on running failed systems ?

Mike Richards didn't want to talk to the press either and often looked even dumber. Maybe Hak is on painkillers too ?

All I'm saying is to a hammer everything looks like a nail.

If a person is deadset that Hak isn't "the guy" that person can find any number of reasons to support that position.

dumb facial expressions included.

He is still "handling" Konecny and by all accounts of late, it appears whatever is going on with Travis is working.

As much junior hockey as you watch I would think you of all people would allow that player development isn't linear nor does it adhere to regimented benchmarks.  If limiting 11's minutes to this point got him where he is, hasn't the process worked ?

11 looks to me like he is making the most of his opportunity playing with 14 and 28. Do you think having had the experience of dragging jobbers around for 10 minutes a night might help with that motivation?

As for Sanheim, I don't know that I saw a whole lot from him that would have him playing over Manning, if you're honest you'd say the same thing, potential be damned... Right now 6 is back in LHV getting minutes and getting better.  The Hextall mantra of not wanting to yo-yo guys back and forth may have played into Sanheim's prolonged scratches.

The Flyers were not better with him playing in place of Manning or MacDonald.

Next year I expect 6 makes the NHL if he uses this time to improve rather than pout.

My thing was always that he needed some help IN GAME.  I ceded that I kinda dig his systems but adapting  to other coaches cracking it (like not anticipating cherry picking from the penguins and rangers which could be further exploited by many teams and not calling a timeout to slow things down when they’re in the midst of blowing a three goal lead or something).

Games like the penguins and the rangers show me these things are still problems.

The PP had gone cold and the penalty kill is still pretty miserable and Manning is screening up and causing goals as much or more than Sanheim was without the playdriving and shot creation numbers.

But it I like the systems they’re playing and I like the positioning their employing and that is finally unleashing the talent that’s been hidden on this team for three years.

In my hotter moments I’ve called for him to be replaced, but I always conceded that I liked his systems play. Since those moments, I’ve consistently said he just needs enabled help when the going gets rough.

Besides... Bertuzzi misses an empty net three times and suddenly Hakstol’s a great motivator?
