Yes he is a UFA at end of year.  I would be ok if we trade a 3rd and a B-List prospect (Alt?) but that is about it.  You just hear stories about everywhere this guy goes he is a cancer.  I feel like our locker room is pretty close and solid, last thing we need is someone to ruin it.

BUF would laugh in Hextall's face at that offer

I would trade AMAC/Lehtera/Weise for Kane. They would have to take 2 of the three. I would also NOT re-sign Kane for any amount of money and just let him go his UFA way. Clear up some roster space for young guys next year.

FYI...Even though AMAC is playing better this is the only way someone else would take a chance on him.

Sanheim is off the table for Kane.  I agree.

How much of Kane being a "cancer" is accurate vs. media hype?  I honestly don't know.  I recall there being some issues with the Jets (particularly between he and Byfuglien) and I know he's had some legal issues, but what has happened in Buffalo?  It seems to have bene pretty quiet, while he has produced pretty well this year.

For the record, I am not a big fan of Byfuglien either.

I haven't heard much in Buffalo either, although I think there was some sort of altercation with an unnamed teammate.  That is not uncommon in practice, etc., so I don't know that that isn't much ado about nothing.    He does have the history of being a problem in Winnipeg, but I'm with you on your feelings about Bigfuglyman.  Seems I recall (not sure) it involved other players as well, but that seems like it should be water under the bridge by now.

Some of this may be the team he's on, but he has really dropped off.   2 goals in the last 12 games for a guy in constant trade rumors and who you'd think would be auditioning for a get out of jail free card.   Maybe a trade rejuvenates him.

My biggest issue with the Flyer rumor is that it again is a rumor that seems so incredibly out of character for Hextall.   I know he's insisted all along that this team is a playoff team.  That's proven justified (even if they don't ultimately make it, the fact they're in a spot now is probably a surprise to all of us).  But does Hextall really think that a Kane vastly improves their chances?  Is this the season he wants to about face on his plans and "go for it?"    I wouldn't know, obviously, but that seems like Holmgren-style fools gold.  We've seemingly (obviously?) had hole to fill previously and we've gotten Gordon, Weiss, Lehtera, et al.   I could see the legitimacy of such a move next spring.  Definitely by the following spring.    Now?   I'm not sure it's wise.   They could probably use a legitimate left wing scoring threat, but... maybe if they move Filppula for him?    What does that do to the roster?   And why would Buffalo do that?  Unless they also get a 3rd or 4th rounder or something.

This is long-winded.   So let's just say I highly doubt any of it.   That said, they'll be introducing him as a new Flyer by the end of the week.

Highlight of his career.

He's scored in his last 2 games. Didn't score in 14 previous games, and has 3 goals 2 assists in his last 21 games. Didn't Sanheim get sent down for putting up those kind of numbers? As a defenceman?

At one point this season he was on pace for 30+ goals and was probably Buffalo's best player.  Still on pace for 25+ goals.

The only way I could see them make the trade is if they are certain they could resign him at a reasonable contract.  If that's not the case, I agree the trade would make no sense and would be totally out of character for Hextall.  Wouldn't want any parts of it myself.

As for price, Buffalo would want a prospect and/or picks and/or a younger NHL d-man.  Last year, Hanzal got a 2017 1st,  2018 2nd, a 2019 conditional 4th and minor league player (not really a prospect).  That's a high price for Hanzal, but Kane is younger and, imo., better.  Flyers have two first rounders this year (their own and STL's).  Would you make a similar deal knowing you could lock up Kane at a reasonable number?  Or would you be willing to trade Morin or Myers instead of all those picks?  (Sanheim is off the table for me.)  Gudas?

He's still young, and fills a need going forward (especially if they don't think they could sign Simmonds).  He would give you depth and improve a weak 2nd PP unit.  Also, if I am the Flyers, I am looking at my forward prospects and am wondering a little about Rubtsov and Laberge.

Lol.  I highly doubt it would happen as well and so this is pretty much just discussion for shits and giggles.  At the end of the day, I think the price for Kane will be too high and I bet he wants to test UFA -- when the Flyers could just sign him for $$$ without giving up assets.

Personally, if I'm Hextall, I'm looking at getting a bottom six PK specialist. Someone proven. That will give us the best bang for buck, IMO. I really don't think goal scoring is a problem moving forward, especially with the way the young players have upped their game recently.

I'd also look at a stopgap goaltender if there is a trade that makes sense, hopefully shedding some dead weight at the same time.

Maybe Neuvirth for Grubauer?

Honestly, I would not, but that's based on my distaste for Kane.   And that's largely fantasy based.  LOL

Yes, agree with all of that.  If Hextall is truly deadline shopping for a PO run, this is what he should be looking at -- which hopefully will not cost a lot.

I do think they need secondary scoring, though.  They lack depth, even though some of the younger guys are showing life.  Not sure a deadline deal makes sense to acquire that.

A PK specialist should be relatively cheap. Maybe even a way to offload Manning or Weise.

For secondary scoring, what do you mean? Bottom six? Because the top six are fine, IMO. Kane would / should not displace our top 4 wingers, and he's not a 3rd line player.

Even if you have Kane or Simmonds on the 3rd, I don't know that Laughton is a strong enough 3C to really help boost his wingers. That's more of a role I can see Frost playing for a season next year or the year after.

Welcome to the next 2 weeks of "Rumors"  ... Eck is just warming up his keyboard.

For the record .... I don't want Kane unless it is for a bag of pucks.

Are we talking game pucks with insignias or practice pucks?

I'm not sure the PK specialist will help much.

They're not bad on the PK because their players are bad penalty killers.  They're just kind of lost out there and they don't have the size and muscle (aka Morin) to keep the front porch clear.

Someone solid back there would be good, and would definitely address their biggest hole, but their system on the PK looks so lost in the woods, I'd sooner trade for a Lappy replacement.

I don't want to fire Lappy now.  He deserves to bow out gracefully.  But they need to do something beyond bringing in a player to address that situation.

Not that I think a run will go far this year anyway, but damn... it won't go anyplace at all with the PK playing like it is. Unless the Refs are going to give us the "Patriots" treatment and just not call anything against us, it'll doom the FLyers for sure.

I'm with you.  This doesn't sound like Hextall at all... and if he were to give up a prospect for a 2 month rental player... why would he do it for Kane of all people?

He drives play acceptably well on a pretty bad team, and he can score a bit, but the VERY LAST THING this team needs... more than they don't need a "Locker Room Cancer" is Penatly Minutes.   Kane is no Tom Wilson, but he's something like 20th in the league in PIMs.  On a team whose PK is god awful, the last thing you need to do going into the playoffs is bring in penalties to kill.  It's just stupid.

LOL Both.   I've really just never liked him.   I wouldn't jump off a bridge or anything if we got him.   It's just I don't think the need justifies the cost.

PIM.

This guy had over 100 last year, looks to be gunning for the same this year.

Our PK is currently third worst in the league.

Kane being good enough to justify his cost means he'd not just need to add secondary scoring, he'd need to add enough goals from the third line to cover for the goals his penalties will end up costing this team.

Don't think it makes sense.  Not buying that Hextall is at all interested, let alone "Top Prospect" interested.

I agree that Lappy is the larger problem. But in-year changes to coaching personnel are pretty rare, and there would be a period of disruption on the ice, I'm guessing.

Is there a metric that measures a player's PK effectiveness?

You can look at Corsi and goal allowance rates on the PK. Lower numbers are better here.

For Flyers with more than 10 minutes PK time:

Shot attempts against/60 minutes:

Leier - 126.6

Filpulla - 108.31

Provorov - 107.68

Lehtera - 105.21

Hagg - 104.45

Laughton - 102.51

MacDonald - 102.17

Simmonds - 96.96

Couturier - 92.69

Manning - 90.57

Gudas - 89.89

Raffl - 88.46

Giroux - 76.9

Sanheim - 73.54

Goals Against/60:

Lehtera - 19.91

Leier - 14.81

Filpulla - 12.35

Manning - 11.99

Provorov - 11.02

Hagg - 10.38

MacDonald - 9.77

Couturier - 9.27

Laughton - 8.95

Gudas - 7.55

Giroux - 7.12

Simmonds - 6.72

Raffl - 4.97

Sanheim - 3.35
