Phaneuf dealt to the Kings

Surprise trade last night late, the Ottawa Senators dealt away Dion Phaneuf and center Nate Thompson to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for the   husk of Marian Gaborik and Drew Shore.  the trade  came about because the Senators agreed to eat 25 percent of Phaneufs remaining money n his contract for the balance of his deal. Gaborik has three years remaining on his contract and is in clear decline phase. Image result for dion phaneuf contract

"Dion brings to our club a great deal of experience and leadership. He also plays with a physical edge which complements our line-up well. Nate has a good reputation of being a high-energy player on the ice. Both guys are also high character guys," Kings Vice President and General Manager Rob Blake said Tuesday.

You can say what you want about Phaneuf but his main skill, a physical presence in front of the net who can eat tons of minutes in all situations and brings a nasty streak every night is a perfect fit for the Kings who have Doughty, Martinez and Muzzin so their top four is now as good as it gets which is important in that division. Nate Thompson is a P/K specialist who in the right situation can score a bit although his game didn't translate well with the Sens.

I am not certain what Ottawa was thinking acquiring Gaborik who literally has not had a good season since 2011-12when he scored 41 goals. He was a huge part of the postseason success for the Kings in their postseason Stanley Cup run in 2014 however.

Yeah I guess I do know what the Sens were thinking, by retaining salary from Phaneuf and almost 5 million a year for the next three years against the cap even though Gaborik is a husk of his former self the Sens will be able to get to the cap floor easier. Sad trade for Ottawa. Nick Shore is just a body, a younger version of Thompson who has never quite established himself.

So on the ice a clear win for the Kings whether you like Phaneuf or not, in the money department the Senators edge closer to the cap floor for the next several years and appear ready to throw in the towel and go full rebuild. By adding the two forwards look for both Hoffman and Pageau to be dealt in the next few days.

Is Melnyk trying to drive Senator fans away or what?

Last year was a deal with the Devil and the balloon was certain to burst (to mix my metaphors, lol) there was no way this season could go as smooth but nobody could have predicted the wheels falling off like this. Anderson has been old and slow, a huge trade didn't work out, the kids doont look to be ready and the veteran scorers have been off. Throw in Karlsson having a bad year (for him) and they are toast.

But IMHO there is still a lot to like here, down the middle you have Duchene, Pageau and Brassard with White talented and fighting for playing time, Ceci has developed into a solid number 2 on defense, Hoffman and Stone are solid as top line or at the least top six wingers.

But they planon blowing it up to free up money to sign Karlsson is what I have read. Pageau, Hoffman and possibly Brassard are almost certainly gone by the deadline, I am sorry, you don't move those guys, you build around them. I know this is one of the leagues cheapest and most frugal franchises but this is horrible.

I like this deal for the LA Kings.

I have NEVER, ever been a big fan of Dion Phaneuf.  I've always felt as an "elite" defenseman, he was somewhat overrated.

That said, he is far from the worst type of defenseman a team could have.

My issue with him was I never really felt he was a number one....which Calgary and Toronto thought he was. With Ottawa, he was not and he won't be with the Kings either.

That means, Phaneuf has less pressure on him as he has an entire defensive corps in LA that plays more or less HIS style of play:  rough, aggressive, and defense first with a touch of offense. He should fit right in there.

Nate Thompson is another hard hitting, big bodied type individual who can chip in scoring here and there, and he too should fit in nicely with what LA likes to do during games.

And to unload the contract of Marion Gaborik (who IMO was finished quite a while ago) and an at best middling type forward in Drew Shore? AND get a bit of a discount on Phaneuf's contract?  LA made out REAL well here.

I am not sure how the Senators think moves like this are gonna convince Erik Karlsson that Ottawa is the place to be for the next 8 years or so. Unless Karlsson is about money first, winning second, he will want to be elsewhere....especially if those other Ottawa players are dealt away as well.

Sens could be looking at a 3-5 year rebuild.

Does Karlsson have the stomach for that, even if he IS sitting on a pile of money? Hmmm....

Bottom line: Good deal here for the Kings who didn't get elite players, but got players that should help them down the stretch, and more importantly, got players that actually fit within their system of play.

Yes this is a good deal for the Kings. Their blueline just got harder to play against.

As did their bottom six should Nate Thompson stay healthy.

That's always been his biggest issue the last several years...being able to stay off IR.

If healthy, he is more than just a throw in....you get a 3rd liner...probably more 4th liner at this stage of his career, capable of around 20-25 points a season to go along with his tough checking style and making south of $2M.

I do not at all get this from the Sens side.

It saves them $500K. That's it. And they get a broken down Gaborik for a more than serviceable Phaneuf.

Plus, reports indicate Karlsson was best buds with Phaneuf. Is this supposed to make him want to sign?

Terrible deal. I'd vote against in fantasy.

I've always known Ottawa had a thing where they tried to "keep up" with the Habs and Leafs for the attention of Eastern Canadian hockey fans, but trying to emulate Montreal's GM ineptitude and the Leafs' former collecting of bad contracts is something I do not recommend.

On top of all that, according to capfriendly, not only do the Sens have some bad contracts and possibly GOOD players they are gonna deal away (and along with that ANY chance of re-signing Karlsson....uh, again, unless he is all about the money), but the Sens DON'T HAVE A FREAKIN draft pick till the THIRD round this summer!

So....taking that into account, if they are gonna deal away any remaining good players, they better find ways to get some 1st and 2nd rounders, because their NHL squad will likely look like junk after the deadline, not too sure what they have in the minors, and their draft day will suck also.

If they buy Gaborik out this summer they actually save like $5 million, which is pretty much the reason they did it. If I were Karlsson I'd want the hell out of there.

Me thinks yes. He's on record as saying he won't consider relocating unless "it becomes a disaster".  They couldn't sell out ECF finals games and then covered up about 1,500 seats prior to this season.  They put less than 16,000 in the building when "capacity" is "17,400". Now they make a deal like this with Karlsson & Co. headed out of town next? #disaster

Melnyk devrait améliorer son français.

Phaneuf AND Gaborik score in their first games for their respective teams.

Phaneuf and the Kings ultimately end up losing their game....but they WERE playing the defending Cup champion Penguins.

Gaborik and the Sens ended up winning their game in OT after trailing all game long.....but then again, they WERE playing the Sabres.

Moving forward, I don't expect much production on the scoresheet from either of these two (well, maybe Gaborik if the Sens as a group just go on a streak like they are prone to..even with their disastrous season), however, I DO expect Phaneuf to be a big part of the reason the Kings remain a tough defensive squad.

Well Karlsson and Phaneuf are best bud it's the reason that got him.

Next shoe to drop is Karlsson for Doughty, you heard it here 1st.

Sens are rebuilding, so Karlsson to Toronto for one of the kids and a draft pick makes perfect sense.
