5 winners 5 losers on deadline day

Some gotta win, some gotta lose.....here are five of each at least in my humble opinion:

WINNERS

COLUMBUS BLUEJACKETS  At very little cost (a 3rd, a fourth and the ghost of Jokinen) the Jackets added a bottom six center in Letestu to help with the P/K, a solid defenseman in Cole, kept Jack Johnson to keep the depth on defense and added power play specialist Vanek to prop up their weakest area. All at the cost of essentially nothing.

NEW YORK RANGERS They received a haul in the Nash deal, a 3rd for Holden, a 2nd for Grabner and then at the cost of McDonough and Miller retooled the farm system with two top prospects and even more picks. They will take some lumps this year and next but they now clearly have direction.

TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING They decided that the window for winning is now. McDonough has always seemed best suited as a 2D or a 3D and now has the chance to play without the pressure of being the number one with Hedman being there. Miller is a solid jack of all trades forward who can score who fits nicely, they kept Sergechev and Point and while they gave up part of the future they are set to contend for a cup for several years.

WINNIPEG JETS Paul Stastny slots into the 2nd line center role allowing the aging Little to play 3C the deep talented scoring wingers got a premier setup man and they also added Joe Morrow for depth from Montreal. Team to beat out West.

SAN JOSE SHARKS Added a true power forward in Kane at little cost. The longer it went the lower the asking price was for Kane and when Buffalo blinked off their ridiculous high demand Kane fell in San Jose's lap.

OH AND ANOTHER ONE

NEW JERSEY DEVILS added Grabner for a second and Maroon for a third brings dimensions to their forwards that have been lacking on the cheap.

LOSERS

WASHINGTON CAPITALS and DALLAS STARS  Probably the two biggest losers, both have been hovering near the top all year but slipping as of late, neither was able to make a move and seem vulnerable as those who they are likely to have to face in the first round improved. Standing pat probably insures a quick exit for at least one if not both.

CALGARY FLAMES Supposed to go out and add a rugged top six winger at the least all they managed was the husk of Chris Stewart off waivers and something named Nick Shore who has failed trials with two organizations in a year.

MINNESOTA WILD Trying to stay in the race, last year they overpaid for Hanzal and were bounced early, this year they not only added nobody, they gave up Mike Reilly to the Canadiens for a 5th rounder and lost Stewart for nothing on waivers without making a single addition.

ST LOUIS BLUES six losses in a row for a team that started the year with such promise, they threw in the towel on the season trading Stastny away to division rival Winnipeg. They did get a first rounder which is the saving grace.

OH ONE MORE HERE TOO

VANCOUVER CANUCKS. Waited too long on Vanek and essentially gave him away for non prospect Motte and 500 year old Jokinen. Simply awful return for one of the top scorers available. Why exactly was Benning given an extension again???

Others I considered, The WINGS for not finding a home for Green but they managed a bevy of picks for Mrazek and Tatar so they didn't quite make the list. The Senators for not trading Karlsson and losing Oduya for nothing but I didn't put them on the list because they have time to try to keep Karlsson or deal him over the summer. The Islanders did zilch to fix their goaltending and defense.

the wild card, the team who either just killed it or got killed would be:

BOSTON BRUINS. First they added Nick Holden who is a pretty good defenseman from Boston,  then solid end liner and two way forward Rick Nash, Brian Gionta brings responsible difficult to play against to the 4th line and rugged Tommy Wingels came over from Chicago. The team that has given up the least amount of goals just got a whole lot harder to play against. The wildcard is not this year it is beyond, if the players and/or picks they gave up mostly for Nash turn into home runs and Nash/Wingels/Gionta are gone after this year. Win a cup? Move to the top of the list. Knocked out by Toronto in the first round? Move to the bottom of the list. This was a gutsy deadline by the Bears and it is either a big home run or a huge strikeout.

I do not see how  you do not have Buffalo as a winner with the picks and the player they got for Kane.  AHL rookie of the year and a number one?  Get real.  And the Blues can still be winners if they have the common sense to FIRE YAO and hire a coach.  Like Ruff.

The Sabres are winners cause they got rid of the guy they traded Myers Armia, Lemieux and a 1st for...the Blues are winners cause after deciding to be buyers at the start of the season they're now sellers. :whiteflag:

They wanted much more for Kane and waited too long and ended up with a middling prospect in O'Regan who isn't really much of a player really. and probably a second rounder as it is unlikely the Sharks resign Kane. They didn't find a taker for Lehner, or Poulliot, or Scandella, or any of the others who they were trying to trade.

As for St. Louis, trading Stastny means that a season that started so well has come to a screeching halt. The pick obviously has value but they are likely on the outside looking in as far as playoffs are concerned after looking like the best team in the West early in the year.

Impossible to spin it in such a way as to make it into a positive for either.

@flyercanuck The two teams who I debated on listing as winners who didn't quite make the list were Pittsburgh adding Nrassard and the Flyers for adding Mrazek for conditional picks and Oduya for literally nothing. They didn't go for the home run they kept the course and it makes sense for them to have done so in the same way that it made sense for the Pens to go for it all by adding Brassard at the cost of a top goalie prospect and a first. Right now the Flyers are conservatively putting a solid team together and the Penguins are aggressively going for a three peat. They were the two teams net on my list.

They can fire Yeo and hire Scotty Bowman, Toe Blake, Vince Lombardi and General Patton...if you don't stop picking them to win the cup year in and year out they don't have a prayer!

When people refer to a 24-year old hockey player who has been completely unable to gain traction at the NHL level a "prospect", you know the word is being used a bit liberally.

No argument, which player are you referring to however? Motte? No he is 23 (had to peek, lol) Reilly?

OH. Got it. O'Regan. Yeah not really a prospect, has been passed over by all the real young forwards in San Jose and is just a body. He will undoubtedly see action with the Sabres because they are talent deficient and because that is what teams do when they trade someone, they play the guy that came aboard as a way to attempt to justify the deal. But really, a career ahler and a second rounder is a poor return for Kane.

I've watched about a million of those guys roll through Edmonton the last 10 years, plus/minus some draft pedigree.

It's a conditional first round.   He has to resign in San Jose, and that's not likely.  It will likely convert to a 2nd.  They did poorly not getting a guaranteed first round.  It's okay, but they could have done better and likely negotiated themselves out of it.

O'Regan is a 5th round pick.   He had a good first year, wasn't good in San Jose, and has only been okay in the A so far this year.   There's potential, of course.  I think they could have done better and likely ultimately failed getting a better return for their asset.

This.  Completely this.

Just a horrible job of asset management and inability to properly gauge a market.

A middling prospect?  Are you serious?  The guy is AHL rookie of the year and he is not much of a player?  What an ignorant statement.  Not surprised as its not your team.  Your team that we beat with no Jack Eichel in Joe Louis Arena.  Pretty sad isn't it.

The 1st turned out to be Roslovic who has made the team now. He's 6'1" 192 can play C and Wing and skates almost as fast as Ehlers. Which is fast. Oh yeah, he's also a sniper. Nice trade Buffalo.

Flyers are winners solely for the fact their gm is standing by his word, sticking by his plan, and that plan seems to be working.

They certainly aren't in the losers category, but I think they could have added a depth forward like Pouliot. Not a bad deadline day getting a guy with really solid playoff experience on D with Oduya, though. I wouldn't consider them giving up Alt as a whole lot.

He is a middlingprospect. Look it up. Mine is not an ignorant statement, it is based off research and fact. Unlike you I am capable of being objective. Unlike you I know what that word means.

The Sharks in the last year and a half have bypassed O'Regan and brought up kids like Meier, Tierney, Lebanc and Donskoi while passing over O'Regan.  In two tries in the NHL he has failed badly with 1 goal in 22 games.

Junkie, I don't want to give you a lesson in Hockey because it would be a waste of time and effort but there is a huge difference between the AHL and the NHL. For some it is a breeding ground where they ply there trade while preparing for the NHL. for others it is a more or less permanent home for a decade or so. Lots of great talented players who are missing an ingredient which would allow them to have an NHL career toil in obscurity for a decade and then move on to adecent payday in Europe before calling it a career. I love the AHL, I watch it almost every night, I know of what I speak.

So lets look at the Red Garrett trophy (or rookie of the year as you ignorantly put it) over the last twenty years.

Those who have went on to rewarding long term success in the NHL:

Tyler Toffoli, Matt Murray, Mikko Rantanen

Those who at best had mediocre careers or didn't make it at all:

17 other guys who you probably never heard of. Okay not quite true, Luke Adam and Tyler Ennis were with the Sabres for a few minutes before disappearing into obscurity so you might have heard of them.

The point being the Red Garrett Memorial trophy has produced 3 outstanding players in 20 years and 17 at best not outstanding and at worst nothing players during that 20 years. In almost all cases the real top tier prospects bypass the AHL and go right from Juniors or college or Europe right to the NHL.

So stick your calling me ignorant pal. Stick your calling me a homer, I am more critical of my beloved Wings than anyone in here and predicted this downfall FIVE YEARS before it happened. I would challenge you to a duel, a battle of wits but I have always been told not to fight with an unarmed opponent.

Oh, and last thing, O'Regan sucks.

Sorry bud. Middling is accurate, if a bit generous. Your GM failed bigly.

You won't know for a couple of seasons how well the Sabres did at the trade deadline. They gave up a very talented player, albeit a locker room cancer in Evander Kane for a bunch of unknown commodities. We won't know how well they did on this deal for 3 years minimum.

Wow yave, I know the Jets are good, but the team to beat out West? High praise. I think Nashville will have something to say about that, though.

I too still like Nashville out of the West.

As good a season as the Jets are having, they still gotta prove they belong once the playoffs start.

I am in NO way discounting them...I've already made that mistake mid season, but the Preds have been building towards a Cup for a while now and I still like them as West favorites......that said, look out for those sneaky Kings.

If they get in, well, they don't really give a rat's arse what seed they are....

I just love the Jets overall game, power forwards, snipers, veterans and hungry kids, Stastny makes them the best bunch of forwards in the game IMHO.

I gotta admit I love what Nashville has done as well, last year they had a nice run but lost Johansen and Fisher among others and barely were able to ice a group of forwards in the finals. They went the depth route this year to make certain it doesn't happen again. Love the way both are built and agree Nashville absolutely will have a lot to say by the time it is over.
