Kane seems just what the Sharks Needed

Recommended Posts

Evander Kane has provided an impact to the Sharks top line since being acquired at the trade deadline.  In 8 games thus far on the top line with Joe Pavelski he has posted 5 goals and 10 points including the 4 goal game night against the Flames.  The hattrick is the first of his career which imo is a surprise.  Kane gives the top line much-needed speed in transition.   Along with the offensive production, Kane leads the team in hits since he arrived something the Pavelski line was missing.

Giving up conditional first and fourth round picks in 2019 for Evander Kane seem to be just what the Sharks needed as this team is preparing for the playoffs.  The first draft pick is conditional to the Sharks signing Kane and that just might be the right decision moving forward.

So what are we talking??

Ondrej Palat would be a good starting point.

5.3mill perseason i don't think would be enough for Kane though.

Toas Tartar is around the same amount.

Will that be enough for Kane??

I am thinking it probably takes $6M-6.5M at least to retain Kane, along with some sizeable term.

I have to admit though, he really DOES look like he is comfortable over in San Jose and is focused on nothing but hockey there.

If the Sharks, who will get ample time to know the man behind the jersey, feel that the Evander Kane they have now is head and shoulders above the Evander Kane that played in Winnipeg and Buffalo, then they may very well be inclined to make him a big offer.

Not like the Sharks don't have the cap space.

And on top of that, they have about $11M or so coming off their books after this season (Joe Thornton, 38, $8M) and (Joel Ward, 37, $3.2M).

Throw in Eric Fehr, whom the Sharks really haven't used much and you can bump up the total amount of freed up capspace to about $13M.

The big questions really come down to, "Do the Sharks think Kane is a good long term fit?" and "Does Kane feel he can make San Jose home for the next several years making hockey his priority?"

If the answer to both of those is "Yes", don't be surprised to see San Jose give Kane a large contract.

Off ice shenanigans aside, seems Kane brings a physical and goal scoring combination that neither players like Ondrej Palat or Tomas Tatar can touch right now.

And if Evander really is cured of the off ice nonsense and has finally "grown up", then look out, he easily becomes a better overall player than either of those two as well.

I am beyond happy with him thus far. Getting out of that stinkhole he was stuck in seems to have given him a charge.
