Weal I think is moved this offseason or before the trade deadline he is 27 and it isn't like they have more time to waste with a less valuable Matt Read type. He is to soft and easy to take the puck from.

He needs strong linemates to be even remotely effective.

Times up in my eyes.

Worst case waive (which I don't think Ron will do I think he would like something for him even if it's a 19th round pick!).

He is being passed on the depth chart.

There's no reason to move Weal, but it's possible. He put up respectable numbers for the season - essentially what I expected from him.  He's on a good contract, and provides speed down lineup. If the Flyers can add two good middle six players, he slots perfectly on the 4th line. I doubt the interest around the league after last season is gone, so he might be traded, but there's no particular need to move him.

I expected next to nothing from him.   Expectations met.

He's got one year left, right?   Yeah, he's not high on the trade priority list.   He can spend time in the press box and fill in when needed.  No big.

If Martel isn't scoring, he's no better and may in fact be worse than Weal.

Not true Martel will bring more when he DOEsn't have the puck than Weal.

That sometimes is the key.

Many can do some things when they have the puck, how hard is it to take a pass and skate with it??

Martel will help retrieve the the puck and keep it out the opposition's hands (not my words what i have seen his coach actually say when Martel wasn't scoring i think it was right after he come back down and then had his jaw broke and he struggled to score with a cage on for a few games Gordon still raved about his play away from the puck) and we know Hak loves his play away from the puck too.

Sorry i guess i just have higher expectations for my 3rd line LW then.

21 points is terrible for the season in 69 games and a -10!

Especially when you consider he basically showed up for two months (October and January) where he scored half his points in those months.

The other months he score one goal a month. Terrible return on an investment.

Nov 1 point in 10 games

December 3 points in 12 games

February 2 points in 13 games (one of the best months in Flyers history for the team and he didn't do squat)

March 5 points in 10 games

I guess it depends on what you're shooting for.

If you are going for a nice draft pick cool keep him.

If you want to have a good season and push deep in the playoffs then he ain't cutting it.

There is a reason he only played 1 playoff game and did nothing in it. He sucks!

21

And +/-  -10.   Don't forget that.

His numbers are staggeringly bad and actually reflect his play.    But 2 years at a $1.75M cap hit wasn't a huge gamble. One year left of it.   If -- IF he's not blocking anyone next year -- then press box and fill in.   Actually, I'd rather him in the press box/fill-in role than one of the kids, so maybe keep him this year just for that.

If Paul Holmgren gets a job with another franchise and wants to trade a 2nd round pick for him, absolutely do it.

His underlying numbers are respectable. Just shy of break even from a possession standpoint, and generated slightly better scoring chances for than against.  +/-? His main linemates were a -7 and a -16. So it's not as if he was an anomaly.

Again. He's perfect for the fourth line. Not every player is suited for every role. That's fine. But let's trade him for a 7th round pick. Just to get rid of him and clear the way for, who, exactly? Lehtera? A scrap-heap 4th line signing? I guess I don't see the point in just tossing away guys who can provide value, even if it's at the bottom of the lineup. If there was a better option for the fourth line, and you want to clear room? Sure. But I don't see one. If you can get something of actual value for him? Absolutely. Someone may still be willing to take a chance that given the right situation, his AHL numbers will translate. But I don't just get rid of him for whatever I can get, just because he didn't score 40 points alongside the ghost of Valteri Filpulla and Simmonds' ruptured pelvis.

Weal on the 4th?   Sorry, but that is a disaster.   He brings some skill but I want 4th liners that at least can be part of the PK or at least play the PK in a pinch.

Weal, and this is just my opinion, is nothing more than a AHL/NHL tweener.   He is not a good option for the 4th line...

Completely agree. To soft and easy to knock off the puck.

I just didn't see the hustle either from him like I did the year before.

Maybe the NHL size and speed just wore him down too.

In I think it IIRC it was 13 games played this year with zero days off for rest he had one point.

So who is that player? As I've said before, if there's a better option, I'm all for it. I just don't see one from within.

And no offense, but I hate this line of thinking. There are more even strength minutes than special teams minutes in a given game. The Flyers averaged 5.4 minutes per game shorthanded. Give me players that can play effectively in some capacity at even strength. Don't tie up a roster spot for a player so he can play two minutes a game shorthanded. Effectively teach the players you have how to do it. Besides, Raffl, Giroux, Couturier, Simmonds, Laughton are five effective PKers already. Ostensibly, whomever they bring in to be the 3C will make 6. Patrick has the chops, too, if they give him a shot. How many players do you need to be able to kill penalties?

I don't want a fourth line where you're watching them and praying they can just get the puck out of their zone without getting scored on. I want one that gets on the other team and keeps them hemmed in and pressures the puck, like the Laughton - Leier - Raffl line did in the first month and a half before they were split up.

I'm not saying it was a great grab, I'm just saying it wasn't as ludicrous as it's turned out to be.

COntrarily, look at a guy like Grabner... much better track record IMHO but somehow signed a much friendlier deal for the Rangers.  He became a fairly valuable trade piece at the end of the season (stupid devils) but all in all, if I'm the rangers, I'd be much happier having him for a million more per year for another two years.

If Hextall had gone after Grabner with Weise's contract, I'd be happer than a pig in poop right now.  But Hakstol didn't want a grabner type... he didn't want a speedy PK specialist who can net 20+ including a handful of Shorties a year... because he's Hakstol.

and I'm really beginning to think he's the biggest problem this team has.

I'm not anti-Hak but he has yet to show me he deserves the job.

Hextall has a longer leash, but it is shortening.

My main point is not signing mid-range players to long(er) term deals. Weise is just sucking up space.

I gotta believe Laughton brings what Weise does and Laughton is a dime a dozen NHLer so far.

I want a player who is good along the boards, strong on the puck, good on the fore-check and is defensively responsible.  All of which are not Weal.   I am not hating on the kid but I think putting him on the 4th is a large gamble.  IMO, he should be in the AHL.  I just think he he a tweener, which is fine, but I would not slot him on the 4th line.

Right now I think it is wait and see what Hextall decides to do at the draft and free agency.   I just don't see much of a future for Weal on this team.   Could be wrong but he was pretty bad this year as I see it.

I’ve had my anti-Hak moments, but then I’d soften becaus I like his systems a bit.

But the the more I think about it without the influence of a good or a bad game, he just isn’t that sharp and his mistakes cost this team a LOT of points this year.

His roster choices are mind numbingky odd.

Hextall didn’t help by not taking his “toys” away and forcing him to play talent over r ally crappy veteran presence, but even his line changes... they lost every home game in that penguins series and The Flyers won 2 of 3 games in Pittsburgh which which means that taking the matchup decisions (a coach’s major job in-game) out of Hakstol’s hands and giving the other team the advantage worked better for them.

There are are so many things I wish he was that he’s not that I think would have mattered, but that’s a big one. How many games did they lose 2 points on because they couldn’t hold a lead late or because they couldn’t buy a clear with the other goalie pulled and all because he thought Manning Gudas and Lehtera should be on the ice in those situations.

Hextall’s never going to be able to give him a team of 100% Cootses and Provos and that’s the only way it seems Hakstol isn’t going to screw up his line matchups.

The rookies arent experienced enough enough to close out games and he can’t play Couturier 60 minutes a night?  Sound logic except the beta kept blowing it and Couturier is this good because he’s been out there in those situations since he was 19.

The Defense is also an utter mess and as bad as Manning and Gudas became, it’s almost entirely coaching.

Theyre almost all misplacing the position with terrible positioning and almost always misplacing coverage... but it’s not getting beat.  They’re actually just choosing to go the wrong way, cover the wrong man or the wrong zone on purpose.

And it’s so consistent that it has to be coaching.  Maybe it’s murphy and maybe it’s not but if it ain’t Hak, Hak sure ain’t fixing it either. And that’s his job.

I have ave lost my patience with him.  And either he and Hextall have been formulating a secret plan in which they plan to reverse tactics and play D properly out of the blue and put the right guys on the ice at the right times and maybe argue a few calls once in a while, then I have no time to make allowances for the guy. And if Hextall doesn’t see that I’ll be losing my patience for him too despite everything I think he’s done so well.

All I know is that Laviolette or Roger Neilson or Mike Keenan would have thrown a fit and risked getting himself ejected after that goal when Letang tripped Couturier.  The refs may not have done a damn thing about it, but the Flyers sure as hell would have known that it was wrong and wouldn’t have been so lost in the woods and dazed when the puck dropped and th next goal was scored to put the game utterly out of reach.

Hak said he doesn’t see the point of yelling  like that.  There IS a point. Several. NHL coaches know that.  It’s an emotional game. And when our team is emotionally deflated, and you do nothing, they’re going to get whooped and THATs my third major complaint.

He’s unfit.

Weal may not have much of a future here.  Almost Definitely not with hakstol. He could elsewhere.  He’s not untalented.  They should move him if they can use him to improve.

I just don't see him being bumped to the press box by anyone here now.  Martel is the most obvious choice but he’s got a similar skill set so may have many similar issues.

Vorobyov, Vecchione maybe if they move them to Wing which they might if they get a center.

laughton maybe if they move him to wing to make Veccchione or Vorobyov 4C.

Abe Kubel maybe but I’m still not sold on him...and his 3 damn suspensions.

In two years, Allison, Strome and others.
