Well that was Mason's doing. Can't help him there. Elliott was hand picked by Ron. He settled. He got what he paid for.

What I'm saying is that Elliott was hand picked out of a barrel of crap.

-Hextall could not go for a new goalie at the deadline because he still had cap issues and becaue anyone he acquired would need to be protected, thus leaving the at this point in time extremely healthy and promising looking Anthony Stolarz as their only qualifying goalie.  Even if he'd wanted to give up an asset or a pick for a goalie, he'd end up giving up TWO assets because it would be very likely that Stolarz would be claimed (at least at the deadline).

-After the season, teams locked up their UFA goalies before the 7/1 deadline (Darling, Bishop, etc) and (and this is a very important AND) Fleury let the Penguins off the hook by waiving his NMC and agreeing to be drafted by the Knights.  This was an unintentional double screw you to the Flyers because it meant that there would be no way McPhee would be drafting Neuvirth and it also meant that he was far less likely to be drafting Stolarz anymore (especially after Boston didn't come to a similar agreement with Rask and had to expose Subban).

-That left unrestricted free agency as as we have already gone over, Hextall essentially had to choose from trying to resign Mason (that bridge had clearly been burned from both ends), Elliott, Chad Johnson or career backups like Niemi, Bernier, Nilsson, Pavalec or God Help Us All, Michael Leighton.

Now with those circumstances in mind, what are you saying he should have done instead of Elliott?  Keep in mind, hindsight is 20/20 vision and even so, Elliott played in more games and had better stats than any of the others (except for Niemi who pulled together a slightly better save % in about half the games across the THREE DIFFERENT TEAMS he played for).
