It was the best of weeks, it was the worst of weeks...…

First Barry Trotz couldn't make an agreement with the Champion Capitals choosing instead to come to the Island to attempt to resurrect  a lost and rudderless organization.

Then the draft fell to them. A few unexpected moves at the top of the draft allowed the Islanders with picks 11 and 12 to add sniper Oliver Wahlstrom and all around defenseman Noah Dobson, then in the second round they drafted dynamic defenseman Bode Wilde who was viewed as a mid first rounder by many.  They went straight up Euro with the next couple of picks and overall had a very fine draft.

So new coach, Stanley cup winner in previous job- check.

Great draft, I mean a really freaking great draft. Check.

So a great overall weekend,,,,,, check.....not so fast.

John Tavares, the face of the franchise and the teams best player since their glory days is the top UFA since God knows when and the Islanders have thrown everything but the kitchen sink at him, offering 8 years and 88 million reasons why to stay with the Isles. He has politely told them that yes, indeed that is a very fair and solid offer which he will be more than happy to consider but he wishes to have a palaver with five or six other teams and see what they have to say and offer before making any final decision.

If Tavares is signed long term to go with a regime change and a monster draft this could be the first step to returning the Islanders to lost glory, if Tavares leaves for San Jose or Toronto or Tampa or anywhere else for that matter, it may not be a return to the dark ages because they do have some nice pieces in place but it certainly will set them back years until the new kids can see if they can make it there. Islanders fans must be having their Schroedinger's cat moment, both filled with anticipation and dread at the same time.

Lose Tavares and De Haan.

Sign 31 year old Komarov, who made everybody around him worse in Toronto to 4 year contract. Sign 34 year old Filppula. Sign goalie the Buffalo Sabres no longer wanted. Trade for Matt Martin. Sign Ross Johnston to 4 year extension.

There's the Lou I know.
