Patrik Laine, the stingy superstar

Hard to say that a guy who has scored 80 goals in the league when he had just turned 20 is "overhyped."

Are there better "all around" young players? Sure there are. But Matthews had half that number.

I don't think the hype machine in Winnipeg even comes close to the one in Tronno. If you don't think Matthews is "getting headlines" lmgtfy.

Well... for me Laine doesn't pass the eye test, Matthews does with flying colours. So yes, the other one is overhyped and the other hyped for well founded reasons. If I have the time, I could make a list of these overhyped/hyped for a reason players. 😇

This caught my eye:

Reaves scored his 3rd goal of the season so he's now tied with Laine. In his 10 seasons Reaves has scored 34 goals while Laine scored 36 already in his rookie season. Interesting... even more when you think that Laine has 3 PPG and Reaves only 1. So ATM no hands Reaves is more effective on 5-5 than Laine. Plus I can't figure out why the h they have Reaves onthe PP? 🤔

Anyways, what sucks for Laine is that this is his contract year. Have they already started the talks of extending his contract? Probably. Any guesses how much this scoring drought if continuing will affect the offer they throw at him?

Laine put up a hat trick today, in Helsinki, with his family in the stands. What a great moment for him, and a nice way to bust a slump.

Yeah, good for him to end the drought basically thanks to his shot. Saw that game, 5 on 5 he was a complete non-factor. But incredibly quick release and a heavy/accurate shot earned him 2 PPGs and an EN.

No one should use Mac and Hatrick in the same sentence even if they'd talk about future talents or even superstars. The other one can create scoring chances for himself and the others in almost every shift, the other one's game is based on getting a good feed and having space around him.

They said he's lost some weight but where does it show? Even the commentators said he stands still too much, he has to use his feet (but I guess he's stingy with that too) 😁

You would've thought the way the game's been changing there wouldn't be a role for cherry pickers anymore. I think he's evolving to one. He had 15.31TOI of which 4.24. PP TOI. Only the 4th liners had less ice time 5 on 5 so essentially Maurice understands the situation and Laine's limitations.

So, here's the fun part for Winnipeg: what on Earth do they pay him? Scoring goals is the toughest thing to do in hockey, but there's only so much you can pay to a young man who's all-around game is still a work in progress. Again: elite shot, but you can't shell out upwards of $8M for a guy that you need to shelter.

I don't think they go $8M. He's still a RFA not eligible for arbitration so the team has some leverage.

A good deal for both sides would be one that takes him to the year before UFA (I think he qualifies at 25). Maybe a three-year, $18M or so deal? Just spitballing. That gives both sides time to evaluate where the player is in terms of overall development before they either lock him up long term or deal him for assets.

The Jets have loaded their roster core for the next 3-5 years and they have the space if they want it. If not, a lot of teams wouldn't mind having a guy who can pot 40 while playing "protected" minutes.

This will cause headache to Cheveldayoff. Laine's stopped scoring and statistically he's the worst defensive liability in the whole team.

I've seen couple of games and in those the plot hasn't changed: Laine spends all his time trying to find an open space where to release his howitzer if someone feeds him. He just cannot seem to create space for himself on his own and more or less just circles around the perimeter.

Scheifele gets $6,125 mil. a year: 26G, 36A in 52 games, +20 and provides leadership and good all-around game.

Laine: 25G, 10A in 52 games, -13 and doesn't provide anything besides the goals and being a threat on the PP. Really hard to see how Laine can demand more than what Scheifele is getting. Since he sees what Matthews got and already in the past stated he had a better rookie campaign than Matthews he'll naturally think he's entitled to similar payday...

Is a trade out of the question?

Yeah. Ouch. He's -13 on a team which is +96 as a whole. On the positive side, he's really young, and still has time to figure out that there are two nets on the ice.

A trade is never out of the question.

Thing is, Laine is an RFA without arbitration rights. They either come to agreement on a nice bridge deal or the Jets can simply retain his rights.

Yeah, I've noticed the dropoff in FHL. It's been depressing, honestly.

The flip side is that he's all of 20 freaking years old. There should be opportunities for coaching to kick in. That said, if he's just ignoring that and freelancing, that's a serious problem.

Funny thing is Finns are usually more defensively responsible because of how they are developed in the Finnish System. Could be that his cannon has not served him well developmentally.

I, for one, hope he figures it out.

Wish I was going to the WPG vs SJ game tonight in -27 'Peg, but will settle for watching it on the new 72' Sony.

A buddy is coming over with some drinks and it should be a fun night of going back and forth between:

1) hurling insults at Kane;

2) hurling insults at Laine;

3) hurling insults at the Refs, and;

4) Trump hurling insults at millions of insufferable citizens of the greatest country on earth.

(sorry, politics, I know, but I couldn't resist)

Pretty horrible turnover to let the Sharks score in OT. And very lazy defensive play to let them score in the 3rd... IDK. From bad to worse it seems.

Or how did you see those from your Sony, Shjon?

Same. The giveaway in OT was a horror show. The final camera shot of the game was on Laine dragging his arse toward the gate, all by himself, not a teammate in sight. Brutal.

The one in the 3rd he was one of several Jets standing around, but it's interesting that he was the last one to touch it. His body language is just absolutely brutal. He's leaning away from the puck. I guess it's going to get worse before it gets worse. It's a weird situation: they are trying desperately to get him going by feeding him one-timers on the PP. But each time he's holding the stick tighter and tighter. They feel they have to put him out there, but it's only making it worse. What do you do?

It's hard to believe I'm saying it, but if I'm Chevy I'm on the phone to Ottawa to see if they'd do a Laine for Mark Stone deal. Or something.

I completely agree with your analysis. The kid is obviously having an attitude problem. He looked so lethargic and disengaged. Take away his fast and accurate cannon which by all accounts has been off for a while - what does that leave him with? Not much.

Yeah, I'd phone already too! Before the whole league knows about his shortcomings. What good is it to pay big money to a mere PP specialist who's streaky? Plus unless he's playing with an injury, he seems to have a skating issue too.

No, other than his shot he offers nothing. Well, he offers nega-traits: he's a liability. And a big one.

He's not a great skater. The story coming into camp was that he had shed 10-15 lbs and was lighter and faster. There's no evidence for that. Presumably it will come.

I'm not sure about "attitude problem." It might just be one of the many manifestations of a shattered confidence, along with the obvious stuff like the loss of accuracy on his shot - he now either misses the net or hits the 'tender in the logo.

I meant it seems like he's playing for himself. While his shot is off, he could try and help the team in other ways. If he has a healthy attitude, this is after all a team sport. Jets are 2nd in Western, it's not like he's playing in a crappy team which undoubtedly would decrease his motivation to perform well.

Like you said, he's holding the stick tighter than ever. Might not be a bad idea to bench him and tell him to lay off the Playstation for a week.

Understood. Well, news today is he's off the PP, at least for tonight vs Habs

It's also just damned tough to play in the NHL at his age. His old junior linemate, in Edmonton, found himself pushed into the league too young because they almost religiously believe in throwing kids in the deep end of the pool to teach them how to swim. Laine found himself in the league because he has an elite shot and the Jets couldn't help themselves. Tough to blame them.

I think it's really tough to develop the way you should when you're not in a development league.

And he lives with his mom (she came over from Finland).

The kid is great with kids, great in the community. He's the perfect Jet. They should mainly draft Fins in my opinion. For the most part they don't care about the bright lights of the big city and don't mind the cold winters in places like the 'Peg.

Best shot in the history of the game and it's not even close really. He needs to work on his foot speed though.

Um...Mike Bossy and Brett Hull say hello....

And Ovi... Yeah I get it.

Just so you know, I say this about Laine not because I'm a Jets fan (which I am now, though not as invested like I am with the Flyers), but because I like to think that I'm a student of the game.

And really, my point is this: Laine can release the shot quicker than anybody in the history of the game. In part because of the technology of the sticks. Which means from a pure physics standpoint I think it's not even fair to compare to guys like Bossy (wood) and Hull (aluminums maybe at mid career?).

So the debate today would be between him and Ovi using the same technology. And who knows. There's something special about Laine's shot: he's the one guy in the NHL that could beat a goalie clean, unobstructed, from the blue line with a wrister. I mean, like from a standing still position on the blue line.

It'sthat good.

Good point about technology. As great as his shot is, I have some doubt that he ever gets to 50...he is one of the streakist players alive. When he goes cold....he's more frigid than a witches tit in a brass bra. Wonder why? Not the talent feeding him the puck...I suspect his skating is not allowing him to get to the weak seam in the defense quick enough?

That, and just confidence in a young player when he doesn't score in a while. But I'm not talking about how many goals he scores.

I'm just saying he has the purest, nastiest, quickest, fastest shot (snap shot, I guess, to be specific). It's also deadly accurate, again, when he's hot.

Taking surprisingly long to get the deal done... anyone want to guess what he's asking and for how long? And what will he get?

I heard a rumor he wants $10 mil. a year or he'll look for other teams. IMO crazy money - not worth it, at least not yet.
