JR Ewing

Patrik Laine, the stingy superstar

Recommended Posts

Based on this most recent interview with Laine about contract talks (non-existent apparently), I would trade the punk so fast it's not even funny.

Because it's the dog days of summer, Laine is trending on twitter dot com in Canada this morning. For no reason other than people spit balling trade scenarios. None started by me.

But the Jets really should trade him.

Not limited to Patrik Laine, but with the large number of desirable RFAs out there all over the league, I think some teams are going to get some really good talent for a relative pittance. Laine might be one of those guys.

Maybe. It's certainly a bit of a weird moment.

He sure could have answered that "do you hope it's Winnipeg" question better. I wonder if his answer is based more on his feelings for the Winnipeg area or his teammates.

Yeah that answer was horrible, rather like his play away from the puck.

My understanding is that he likes Winnipeg, doesn't care about being in a big city or anything, like that. Not uncommon for Finnish players to not care about stuff like that. Hell, you can play video games anywhere, which is how he prefers to spend his time.

I think maybe some of the leadership group have likely grown a bit tired of Laine. But that's just me speculating.

I don't think they go $8M. He's still a RFA not eligible for arbitration so the team has some leverage.   A good deal for both sides would be one that takes him to the year before UFA (I think he qualifies at 25). Maybe a three-year, $18M or so deal? Just spitballing. That gives both sides time to evaluate where the player is in terms of overall development before they either lock him up long term or deal him for assets.   The Jets have loaded their roster core for the next 3

He mixed the lines up last night, putting Laine on with Scheifele and Wheeler, Perrault up with Little and Ehlers. Seemed to work, since they made the comeback (Little tied it up as the 6th man with the goalie pulled). But I expect Maurice to go back to their regular current lines.   I was talking with a friend who is a real Jets fan (I'm a part time fan at best) and was suggesting that maybe Little was the problem with that line, that he's getting long in the tooth. He disagreed, sayi

Was it this shot you're talking about? 😉   Hidden Content Give reaction or reply to this topic to see the hidden content.   Mike Bossy was a fantastic player in his day. Not trying to pick a fight but I have a hard time believing they taught better shooting technique some 30 years ago. I sense some nostalgic feelings behind this... 😇

The Bossy comp might be fair. In fact you could make a case for the Jets being a lot like the Isles.   Laine/Bossy. Pretty close. Scheifele/Trottier Trottier may be the most underrated superstar ever and Scheifele could develop into the same type of player. Trouba/Potvin not a good comp but Trouba is damn good. Morrisey/Persson Morrisey is developing into a fantastic player Big Buff/McEwen Great comp- both are solid veteran complimentary pieces. Wheeler/Gillies

It's also just damned tough to play in the NHL at his age. His old junior linemate, in Edmonton, found himself pushed into the league too young because they almost religiously believe in throwing kids in the deep end of the pool to teach them how to swim. Laine found himself in the league because he has an elite shot and the Jets couldn't help themselves. Tough to blame them.   I think it's really tough to develop the way you should when you're not in a development league.
