Players losing confidence?

I think Nino's confidence is zilch and Russo has reported as such.  IMO, he's a waste most of the time when he's on the ice.  He seems to be overthinking things a lot.  He really needs to simplify his game.

^ This was the point brought up... It's something I've wondered about for quite some time; along with another aspect the current team faces.

This was going to be my reply to CreaseAndAssist:

Quote

They said the same thing about Haula. I wonder if what they have is contagious? Which seems to be the cycle with a whole lot of now former Wild players.

To elaborate:

With Bob Naegele, Jr.  & Co. along with GM Doug Risebrough and head coach Jacques Lemaire it was never like that. The purse strings were shorter but players played hard and Lemaire got a lot out of those players despite not having a whole lot to work with.

With Craig Leipold and a whole list of characters (Chuck Fletcher, Todd Richards, Mike Yeo, John Torchetti and Bruce Boudreau) it seems every year there's a player or two that really stand out as washed up or very near washed up and lots of money is tied up; where there's not a thing upper management or staff can do about it.

So how can players that seem fairly decent start descending down the trail of losing confidence to looking completely not interested in being out there on the ice... Yet still demanding (maybe the term 'requesting') more ice time or to be on line with more talented players, or be put in situations, like on the power play, so they can somehow find what they're missing?

These guys have one of the best arena's out there, the best of just about everything a player could ever dream of from that aspect alone... To a brand new practice facility... To making good money, have wonderful fans... But many fall off into oblivion. How the hell can that happen?

-

What's slowly depreciated within this team are players who are locked in tremendous contracts, to younger players coming into their own who are now earning more... But the (rental) Free Agents we used to acquire completely tarnished... The middle of the road 'role' players we got for cheap we now can hardly afford...  So they've been replaced with re-tread players who are long on years and a lot less expensive than the middle of the road 'role' players... All due to too much spending and in reality not a whole lot of up-turn to Leipold's investments.

The team went from barely nibbling at playoff contention status to making the playoffs nearly every year... Only to exit quickly in the first round far too many times.

I genuinely believe the team has since Leipold took over, a lot more talented cast of players (overall) who have slipped from their very own goals or expectations and their frustrations just might not be recoverable. Then you factor in the growth of many of the younger players leveled off or fell compared to their peers on other teams; all while the 'core veterans' keep getting older and further away from their prime years.

What's held back the confidence in Coyle, Nino, Ek, Kunin, Scandella, Haula, Tuch, Graovac, Reilly, Olofson, to name a few? Granted, some of them didn't completely pan-out but some of them seemed very promising then just fell off the chart. Most players do go through slumps, off and on lose confidence but most the time they gain it back. But with most of these guys they had 'something' that was working (at one time) in their favor, then poof - nothing.

So the Wild went from acquiring 28 year olds, to 30 year olds, to 30++ year olds. Doing so they were able to dish out $2-4 million on some FA's and now after screwing the pooch with so many bloated contracts they're looking for anyone half able for $1 million or less.

Out of the 10 you listed only 2 have a chance to still do something. Ek and Kunin. That's scary. Unlike Coyle and Nino the rest were let go rather quickly. Granted Haula would have been fine here even if mismanaged and who knows about Tuch.

Barely 20% is unbelievable when you list the group like that.

Coyle and Nino are currently twice the 'stone hands' that Brodziak ever was.

I hope Fenton likes a challenge, Because he's hip deep in it right now.

Coyle seems to be playing hard and getting some results.

Nino, I don't understand.  He used to play with grit and some speed for his size, but he now falls over a lot and never blasts anyone.  I would like to see him put on the checking line to go out with a mission to hit, forget the damn puck for a while.  See if that invigorates him a little.  Right now, he is adding nothing to this team.

Also, Greenway falls over way too much.  He needs to get a better base.  6'6" must be tough, but he's got to figure it out.

We will find out for sure as to the whole problem is but my guess is one of two things, we either have one of most idiotic owners or a owner who is a huge fan of the players. I say idiotic in that if he has been quiet and hasn't interfered with the GMs decisions he has sat and watched the team fall apart years with no improvement. I say a fan because maybe he is going over the GMs decisions and uses being a fan of players to veto and go that way. I mean no other team would have resigned Koivu with that contract the Wild signed him just in 2017. No move/trade and 5.5 million a year? Really?!

I think in reality that CL is both idiotic and a fan. I can't figure out otherwise players can come here, get big bloated contracts, eat up ice time, not produce and not see any punishment for it. Then we see young guns showing some skill and starting to look good and get rewarded with less ice time in cases like Haula, traded away where we see them take the next step with their new team well we continue to see players that either come here completely washed up or play just enough, get a lock down contract and disappear. If it was something that happened a few times I would look the other way but we see it to much.

I think Leipold being a fan of the player first it allows players to disappear without to much worry if they are selling merchandise and a fan favorite. Look at Nino. He really should be riding the bench except a few minutes and that is if they can't find somebody else that is more effective. Nino has a ton of merchandise. Haula on the other hand did not but was proving to be very effective but got the boot. Hell Haulas first year with Vegas he did one point less then Ninos best season and Ninos best season was a fluke. The guy only averages about 35 points a season.

There were fans excited about the Wild signing Dany Heatley and then there were those who thought it was a poor decision. Either of those fans saw him as a huge scoring machine or an old player on the decline destined for a big payoff / retirement package from the Wild.

The same can be said for Thomas Vanek. Fans were either punch-drunk thinking he was going to bring all kinds of extra scoring, or those who felt he was another Wild oldster receiving yet another big buck retirement package.

Looking back on each of these players (and you can include when they re-signed Backstrom and later Koivu) comments by other players, coaches and Chuck Fletcher himself, when questioned about their sagging performance... 'Do you bench (insert name of known slug with a huge $$ contract and NMC)?' Their responses seemed vaguely evasive while maintaining a favorable to optimistic view of them. Not once did I ever feel convinced they were being honest with fans. I felt like they went into some type or protection mode to not step on Leipold.

Seriously, why else would Vanek or Heatley (and others) continue to receive so many minutes with so many poor performances?

You may be on to something about cl, however I think the issues of letting good players go while keeping players who flatten out or disappear has more to do with listening to bad scouting ta!ent and favoring a players sellability over production.

Guys, where are all these good players the Wild has let go?? It's not as if the league is littered with ex-Wild players having all sorts of success! Bring up Haula and Tuch if you want but that was a unique situation that came about because of the way the Wild handled the protection of their players during the expansion draft.

Nino was a better player at the time the decision was made to leave Haula unprotected during the expansion draft. Nino IMO had a higher upside as well.

Speaking of Haula and Nino.....what do you have to show Haula's "one point less than Ninos best season" numbers weren't also a "fluke"? Seems up to last year Haula was about a 30 point a season player, which is about what he's on pace for 13 games into the current season. Given the Golden boys are currently sitting one spot above the cellar dwelling Kings, I'd say it's certainly a possibility everything out of Vegas was a "fluke" last year. I wouldn't be holding my breath expecting Haula to put up similar numbers this season and those coming.

I am not going to cut you for defending the team. People can be homers with blinders on and homers without blinders. Everybody here would love nothing more then for this team to win the Cup with any roster. But patterns start to form and it becomes easier to predict the outcome. Especially with a roster that really hasn't changed much throughout the years. The core guys have been here for many years now. But a lot of them are getting into the twilight of their careers or basically at their end. The team has gotten older and slower. Parise even admitted to it. We know what Nino is. We know what Coyle is. It would have been nice to have that speed of Haula to help keep teams a little more on edge. We aren't a physical team. We aren't a fast and heavy shooting team. It's hard to say we are a heavy defense team as other teams are just peppering our goalies with shots. We are in a awkward almost patchwork mode hoping somehow it comes together.

I know people like to point out teams not doing good compared to the previous year but at least Vegas not only made it out of the second round but made it to Cup. Something this Wild roster has never accomplished.  The most wins this roster has been able to put together in a single playoff run is 6. The little things people complain on this board don't help this cause. But you got to wonder what is going on internally that we can't see. Why is it they can do pretty well in the regular season and then look like a high school team playing a NHL team in the playoffs. Why does it appear players quit? Why is there no development of younger talent? Why does this team want to buy a Cup with buying a players name instead of looking at what they are actually doing or just developing their own talent? There is a lot of whys but based on how things have gone you get to start to develop a idea.

Nino did score more at the time, but Haula's scoring skills were rubbed out in favor of training him to be a PK specialist to replace the expensive Brodziak. The trouble is Haula was terrible at checking; which is where Brodziak excelled. Obviously the Wild don't need players who know how to check.

Brodziak is a prime example of a center who could make Koivu look bad because Koivu has the courage of a dead mule.

BOTH Haula and Brodziak substituted for Koivu (over the years) when he was out with injuries and BOTH did an okay job. BOTH could score more but BOTH were destined to be hard working penalty killers and not valued beyond that. Haula IMO was more of a scorer while Brodziak was only relied upon to be used defensively - where he was in his element. They both played both ends of the ice to whatever varying degree, an asset the Wild droll over and with Nino, his greatest asset to the club is to be put in the penalty box to serve bench penalties.

All have never been used properly. Insert square peg in round hole.

LoL at the Nino comment. I wonder what you have to do to be the "the bench minor server guy"?

No defensive slills. A guy who can add offense when getting back to 5 on 5.

Only trouble with that is the Wild always plunk him in the penalty box regardless of whatever line rotation is out there. (Clueless.)

I'm with you on the whole Nino "deal"  The Wild have always seemed  to treat Nino as a second class citizen. Not sure why. Maybe he's high maintenance or something? At any rate, after his injury, he needs a boost of confidence maybe more than anybody else on this team. Having him serve bench minors hardly has that effect.

Boudreau needs to do whatever he can to help Nino get back on track(even if it means treating him with kid gloves) because I believe he's still got a lot of game left. Give him the same attention they've given CC over the years and IMO you'll get more out of him than you'll ever get out of CC.

@sweetshot yeah, the sending Nino to the box was a big Yeo trend. Drove me nuts.

Then Boudreau stayed with it. That blew my mind. Why? I figured Bruce wasn't behind that choice. Never figured he was dumb enough to have a first or second line PK unit out there with guys totally clashing with Nino's style of play and expect results.

I mean, for three years we'd see Koivu out there with whoever on a PK and maybe twenty times he'd force a pass to Nino with two guys covering him, and never pass it to him when he's open. Then we'd see Mikko skate back to the bench pissing himself because Nino didn't walk on water as he expected.

^ And there you have it. More of the history to what's wrong with this team.

puck hawg - you're wasting your time.   The fake fan haters are just waiting for the inevitable slump and the end of the year when the team doesn't win the Cup to justify their fake fan hate.  You can't have a rational discussion with some one who thinks they're the smartest person on the board and just keeps repeating the same old negative chit ad nauseum.   20/20 hindsight losers.

Seems like the team is playing pretty well right now.  Dubnyk looking strong, solid defensive play, contributions from all over the roster.  Some guys have not scored yet, if we can get them going, things should be even better right?

As far as the playoffs go, if you've watched the past few years, we look faster, not slower, but we get pushed around.  The trade-off for dropping Cullen was to add some toughness.  Let's face it, Cullen was not going to scare/hit anyone, a true gentleman. That is one example of how we should be tougher.   I think we have a chance to have a good playoff run.

That being said, you have to make the playoffs first.  Looking good so far and if we can get guys like Nino and Ek to actually hit the back of the net, it should only get better.

Never once did I say "I see it but no one else does". It fact a lot more people say the same thing I do then the other way. Of course other teams make those mistakes. Every team does. But they figure it out and move on and improve. The Wild have been in the exact same spot forever now. No improvements. No changes. Just the same thing year after year. I think it's perfectly fine for somebody to complain and demand more well still watching for them and cheering when the team wins. There are some people, even here, who would gladly eat chit shoveled into their mouths by the Wild organization, be told to tell people it's best cheese cake ever and announce it's the best cheese cake ever to everybody.

I am glad to see Parise playing the way he is. Up to this point, to me, he's been a money pit. Maybe he truly is fully healed and ready to go we will see a top 20 player. I am happy to see Dumba playing fantastic right now. I am happy to see 6 guys with 4 plus goals in 13 games. I am happy to see other guys stepping up for other guys that are either hurt or in a struggle right now. I would take 1 Cup win or 2 or 3 Super Bowl wins.
