Flyers Mid-Year Review Sponsored by the Letter "F"

Not too many highlights to read here as of 1/9/19 the Flyers have record of 15-22-6 with 36 points, one point above the Ottawa Senators.  This means that they currently they have a 0.0% chance of making the Playoffs this spring no matter how much money Dave Scott chooses to throw away this season.

We've managed to Fire the only GM in Flyers history that actually had a plan and the second longest term coach only to go fall to nearly bottom of the Eastern Conference.  The Flyers have the 3rd worst PP  (rank 29th) and the 4th worst PK (rank 28th).  However, they do rank first in Face Off win %.

The Flyers have a new NHL record with starting 7 different goalies in just 43 games of the season yet they are only 3rd worst in goals against.    :firstplace:

Here are my rankings.

Claude Giroux - A-  Giroux currently 47 points in 43 games with a 60.5% FOW% - not too shabby as he is on pace for a 94 pt season... except there is a question with his leadership as his team has sunk to the bottom of the Eastern Conference.

Radko Gudas - B+  What a turn around of a season for Radko still playing with a physical presence without the suspensions.  Gudas has the best +/- among all the Flyers this season. (+7)

Robert Hagg - B+  Hagg has been one of the most consistent D- men this season while chipping in 12 points.

Travis Sanheim B  Sanheim has improved this season with more and more ice-time earning time as the top defensive pair with Provorov.

Scott Laughton B  Laughton has been moved throughout the roster and has played reasonably well on pace for his highest point season.

Sean Couturier - B-  While Couturier leads the team in goals (15) he is far from consideration for a Selke nomination this season.

Carter Hart and Brian Elliot - B   Both haven't played that much this season and each has fared much better than the rest which I'll give an average rating of a D ( Neuvirth, Stolarz, Lyons, Pickard, and McKenna)

Travis Konecny - C+  There is some inconsistency in Konecny's game as he recently went 13 games without a goal.  When he keeps his feet moving he has created some PP opportunities.

Michael Raffl - C+  The versatile winger has fared well when healthy with consistent defensive play, just not so much offensive play.

James van Riemsdyk - C   We all hoped for more,  injured most of the season we just haven't seen any impact of this Free Agent Signing.

Jake Voracek - C-   Effort without a brain, imo.  While Jake is the 2nd highest points scorer on the team he also has the second worst +/-  as a minus 17.

Wayne Simmonds - C-  Wayne has been a stand-up guy for his teammates over the years but his play has deteriorated with a lack of speed, poor positioning in the defensive and neutral zone.  Have a great rest of your career somewhere else.

Ivan Provorov - C-  There is quite a bit of regression this year with Ivan,  maybe a more defensively sound partner as in Sanheim will get him back on track.

Shayne Gostisbehere-  D+  Ghost has recently been replaced as the top defensive pair with Provorov by Sanheim.  The pair has been a disaster with Ghost's worst minus 19 and Provorov's minus 17.  His one-timer on the PP rarely hits the net and he is often pressured to game-changing mistakes.  With Meyers improved play of late Ghost may just be that D-man that other GM's may overpay for.

Nolan Patrick and Oscar Lindblom- D   Two lost young souls this season, both nowhere near expectations.

The rest... easily replaced.

Honestly? After playing injured all of last season on a ridiculously favorable contract - and still chipping in more goals than Jake Voracek has ever scored - wouldn't surprise me if the team's third highest goal scorer wasn't saying the same thing.

Yes, that's the guy almost everyone has been calling the heart and soul of this franchise.

Pretty much agree with everything.

Probably would give Homer and Scott a D as well.  While I don’t have a major problem with firing Hextall or Hakstol, I don’t think the moves were well thought out and I’m not sure Hextall was fired for the right reasons.  Also, Hakstol’s firing was poorly handled.

Excited for the rest of the season!  😐🔫
