Look back over the years since expansion and find the "shocking" winners. They are few and far between - if any really exist at all.

New Jersey Devils in 1995 perhaps?  🤔

Montreal Canadiens in 1993?

That's about it.  Good point.  :)

Getting people to believe in something that happens maybe twice in 50 times is what keeps casinos in business...

Hi all, I am joining this forum with the hope that it grows substantially; I am a refugee from another major hockey forum that was very poorly moderated, has a large number of immature idiots and I hope goes bankrupt.  My ID on that site was "nystromshairstylist", which I will retain here as well.

Anyway, even though I'm an Islanders fan I chose not to watch game #4 as I knew the result; the team never seemed properly prepared for this series.  The Canes were not the most talented team, and were without their entire second line and starting goalie, and the NYI still could not put together a solid effort.

They lost this series for a confluence of reasons, but while I am happy Trotz got them into the PO when I expected they'd finish in the bottom 3-4 teams in the league, last year was the first time he'd ever been past the 2nd round of the playoffs. Yes he won the SC, but that was with a stacked team of hall of famers and all stars, which admittedly the Isles are no where close to at this time - but neither are the Canes. The rosters as they stood at the beginning of the series favored the Islanders, who IMO played well below their potential, which must go on the coaching staff.

All in all, a great year, but they need to get absolute garbage like Hickey and lazy, low effort players like Nelson off the roster, and replace them with hungry, aggressive and talented younger players like Wahlstrom, Bellows, etc.

Hopefully, they can build on this season, make some desperately needed roster changes, and continue to show progress in the coming years.

Happy to have another Islander fan on this site and I would really like this forum to grow as well.  We have a great core of members here who post throughout the site.  Feel free to invite others who you think would enjoy coming here.

I think the Islanders have had a great season especially with the loss of Tavares. Trotz deserves a ton of credit.

I wouldn't call the NJ Devils shocking, when they won it in 1995, other than the fact that they destroyed a Scotty Bowman-led Detroit Red Wings team that dominated during the regular season. The season prior, they were a Stephane Matteau Game 7 OT goal away from going to the finals instead of the Rangers.

Yes, that forum is awful, and what's interesting is that its sister forum, "superherohype" or something to that effect, is equally lousy. Its as if they hired the same 2/3 a--holes to be moderators of both sites.

Anyway, I will read the FAQ here, hopefully it is more rationally moderated than those sites.

Don't worry I'm a fair and rational admin  :InnocentSmiley:  and I have a great core of moderators.  I own the site as a hobby, thus I want it enjoyable for all here.  The biggest key is to discuss the topic without personal attacks towards other members and post here because you enjoy discussing hockey with other hockey fans.

Please send me a PM if you have further questions.

First of all welcome!  @hf101 did a great job explaining our philosophy.  I would like to add, if you run into any problems or questions, please do not hesitate in contacting one of us either via a PM or by reporting a post via the report a post function.  Most of us try to respond as quickly as possible.  Bottom line, even though one may be a Islanders fan, or a Pens fan, or a Sharks, fan or a Flyers fan...bottom line we are all hockey fans.  Please don't be shy around here.  We are looking for to your insight about the Islanders.  Feel free to have your buddies come and look and round join us.  The more the merrier.

Again...Welcome!

When the Leafs do win the Cup again (not holding my breath), I want them to either be the best team going in, or eventually defeat the best team along the path to the Cup. It makes it mean more to me as a fan.  :)

Words, I understand your points in general.  I don't entirely agree, but I get it.  I know there's the desire to "beat the best" and not backdoor into it.

But the above makes me laugh slightly.   With its being since 1967, if the Leafs won the Cup you'd party just as hard if it was against the Saint Mary's Prep Junior High Field Hockey team.  The parade would be just as sweet and the buses would burn just as hot.

Fortunately, I wasn't alive for a part of that drought. So it's not quite as bad as it seems. The drought is also mitigated somewhat by the constant and reassuring presence of the Stanley Cup in Toronto (at the HHOF) so it's as though it has always been in its rightful place all along.  :cool[1]:  (Sorry, there was no arrogant arse emoji lol. I looked!)

Maybe we could go down to the HHOF and "borrow" it for a day to hold an impromptu parade...

Agreed; I considered them just making the playoffs to be their Stanley Cup victory, as even I had them finishing in the bottom 5 of the league.

That said, they need major roster changes moving forward, particularly in the top 6/9.

I cannot imagine if the TML win the cup, I think canada might stop functioning as a country for about 3 weeks, with people starving in the streets and a general meltdown of all civic functions.

It might not resemble 2015 syria, maybe more like the Tea Party rebellion in the US in the 1770s...

LOL, those flyers did a lot of damage in the PO this year, eh....

J/K, I love Giroux, would you guys accept a Nelson and a #1 pick for him....?

Uh no.

And at least you can hang the "We beat the Penguins" banner up in the rafters...j/k! 😜

And he is a free agent so the Flyers could just offer him a contract if you guys don't sign him.

But no way I would trade a Giroux (one year removed from 102 point season) for Nelson.

Nelson's best year is just have of that.

Hard pass.
