Montreal and Philly talk possible Ghost trade

I just read the following on Spector's Hockey.

CANADIENS AND FLYERS TALKING ABOUT GOSTISBEHERE?

TVA SPORTS: cites NHL Network collaborators Dennis Bernstein and Anthony Di Marco claiming the Montreal Canadiens have been linked to Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere. There’s no deal pending between the two clubs.

Di Marco said the Flyers are interested in rugged Canadiens forward Andrew Shaw. Bernstein added Flyers GM Chuck Fletcher is also looking at speedy left wing Paul Byron.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Gostisbehere to Montreal for Shaw and Byron? I don’t see that one happening. Too lopsided in the Canadiens’ favor.

“The Ghost Bear” is a former Calder Trophy finalist (2016) who is a year removed from a career-high 65-point performance. While his production dropped to 37 points this season, I attribute that to the fact the Flyers were a mess this season. He would certainly address the Habs’ need for a skilled left-side blueliner.

Shaw is a physical player who can play center or wing and has a decent scoring touch. He also has a long history of injuries and takes too many undisciplined penalties. Losing Byron would rob the Canadiens of a fast-skating 20-goal scorer. That could be offset, however, via free agency or with one of their promising youngsters within their system.

Personally, I am not for this trade, for one, like Spector said, it would require more to come to Philly, before I would even think about it. Also, I am not sure that I would want o move Ghost just yet, I think that with better coaching, and a stable partner he would do better than this past season, heck the whole team will do better with better coaching, so got to hope that the AV team can get those guys to play better.

Although, I would not mind seeing Byron on the team, he and G have plaid together in Jr, and they seem to push each other and feed each other as well; plus they are still good friends. Now I am not saying that I would put Byron and G on the same line, but once in a whyle, it could not hurty. Plus getting a fast-skating 20 goal scorer, would not hurt the Flyers.

I don't actually understand why the Flyers keep getting linked to leftwingers.

I'm not hot to trade Ghost, but if I'm going to trade him it's for a need. I don't perceive leftwing as a need unless they're moving Giroux to center or right.

Yeah, I like Byron, a lot, but not for Ghost.

This is a stupid trade and it can't possibly be under consideration.  Makes ZERO sense for the Flyers.  They Might as well just stick with Patrick and take a gamble on Frost being ready.

Yeah. Shaw would be a non-starter for me right out of the gate.

Byron is a nice player, but he just doesn't fill a need unless something is going on somewhere else that is going to create that need.

But not for Ghost.

We could literally steal one of Torontos RFA young speedy 20 goal scorers , Kapenen or Johnnson, the compensation would be a second rounder or even offer them the rights to our college prospects who arent gonna sign. They are up against the wall. Why would you trade an asset like Ghost for an average winger like those guys. Ghost is our best trading chip, if hes  traded , has got to be used in a blockbuster deal for an impact player.

Agreed, if Fletcher makes any trade with Montreal he should be shot!

I’d still consider taking Weber off their hands in exchange for Hagg or something... if they retain half Shea’s salary.

Total agreement. I think you could even make a gentleman’s agreement with TO on the offer sheet.  They would want picks most likely anyway.

You package a Ghost in a deal for Marner. Not mediocre Schlubs.

Speaking of Marner, if you were gonna offer sheet anyone... he’d likely be worth the picks... but it would likely end Fletcher the way it ended a Homer as you might get a handshake from Toronto over Kappenan or Johnson for offer sheet picks, but Marner is a different story entirely.

Homer should have named himself GM again just to do it, then stepped aside afterwards. I’d applaud such hideous douchebaggery.

Uh no.

He is 33 with 7 more years left on his contract...so that would be 7 mill for him till he is 37...and then i don't even know how to figure out what the end would be like but it smells like cap recapture penalty if he hangs them up early.

Besides his decline in play has already happened. That ship has sailed.

Stay the f**k away from him.
