Luongo Retires leaves the Canucks with a 3 year $3M Cap Hit

Recommended Posts

After 19 seasons Roberto Luongo leaves the game with three seasons still remaining on the massive 12-year extension he signed with the Canucks in 2009. His decision to retire, rather than going on Florida’s LTIR, impacts both clubs’ bottom lines going forward.

Maybe he could have used the LTIR loophole, but his 12 year contract was one that the Canucks knew he would never finish.  Instead he will probably be hired by the Panthers at some point as he plans to retire in Florida but wants to be involved with Hockey.

I'm not sure what the Vancouver fan opinion is with the 3 year cap hit but he was a part of the Canucks best era the Canucks have had, imo, he's a given Hall of Famer without winning a Stanley Cup or a Veniza.
