Greetings:

Maybe Trader Fletch decides to flip him for whatever reason.  Ivan is a great kid, but FletchMeister may not feel any kinship.  If team X offers a first and prospect/two, I listen.

I listen to that in exchange for a Jake or a JVR or a Niskanen or even a Ghost.  The roster is chock full right now.  You start taking picks and prospects, you gotta make room for them someplace and they have to be hands down better than the prospects we already have ( for which we already don't have roster spots).

Sign Ghost.  Dude plays almost 30minutes a night.  He gets $8million.  No real questions to that in this league.

Jones is definitely better, but I can see Werenski's agent getting him more than that. He's not gonna care that Jones is signed for less than he should be.

Jones signed that deal 4 years ago.  If we were signing Provo 4 years ago, he'd get 5.something too.

This is a long standoff. Each passing day makes me think we are closer to a trade.

Nah, there is a bottleneck with at least the Werenski deal, and possibly McAvoy deal, needing to get done first.  Just seems like the Provorov deal is hostage to at least one of those deals needing to get done.  Trouba getting done helps, I think.  Hell, even Marner may be holding things up for the d-men.

Teams don't just trade their 22 year old number one defenseman unless for a shiit load coming back.

I don't know... Seth Jones was traded for Ryan Johansen straight up.

I'm not sure i would label Seth Jones a #1 defenseman though but that is debatable.

Even then he wasn't showing he he was going to be anywhere as good as he has turned out to be and THIS is even a better reason why you don't trade Provorov.

And besides the Preds were desperate because there were just not doing a very good job drafting their #1 center so they had to more a solid piece for a solid piece in return.

But i know how long the Flyers have longed for a true homegrown #1 defenseman and it seems they have found one for the next 10-12 years if they play their cards right....and i just can't see them moving him now. Just doesn't make sense.

I think Seth Jones is possibly the best young dman in the league. Took him a few seasons to figure it out, but he's a beast now.

So we have 2 of the top 8.

Future's looking great!

I'm eager to see what a legit coach can do with them.  I like Gordon okay and Vigneault's good.  But give anyone not named Hakstol this crew, and we're going to be very very surprised at what they accomplish.

I don't think trading Gudas was necessary, but I see the logic in it.  I'm just eager to see what Fletcher will do with the surplus D-man.  Braun, Hagg, & Morin are fighting for one slot.  I assume one of them will be traded before the start of the season.

It was if you wanted to improve the defense and nake room for the young guys

That's not really what the trade did at all though is it?  Only indirectly.  It was merely about getting something helpful in return for Gudas as opposed to losing him outright next summer or having to trade him at the deadline for picks.

And that's clearly not what Fletcher was trying to do as he brought in Braun immediately after.

Bringing in Niskanen and Braun indicates he wants safety and complementary pairings in the short term until the youth is ready to take over fully.

I think he traded Gudas now because otherwise he would be faced with a contract year in which he'd either have to resign Gudas (he couldn't, it wouldn't make sense and thus the making room for the kids you reference).

In a sense I think you're right, trading Gudas was about doubling down on the kids, but not in any immediate sense and not even specifically any of the guys currently on the team...  who knows which of this crop will survive the next two seasons (aka trades and Seattle draft).

We don't need no stinkin' slogans.

$20* says we get handed a slogan to start the season.

something like "The Beginning to End All Starts" or "Hextall: Endgame"

👺

* and that's 20 big American dollars, so, you know, you'll be rich in your socialist hellhole and free to visit whatever area wineries and cheese stores you might like to frequent. 🤗

But they had other top defenders. Ellis, Weber, Ekholm, etc. Ellis or Weber probably would have been more comparable. But a first line center fits the bill.

I don't think this is the same situation. Sanheim might be a better comparable in terms of situation. Maybe not quite, but closer.

I hope this isn't just lip service from Ivan...

"I love everything here," he said in April. "Love the guys and love the organization and everything about Philadelphia. It's not going to be a problem."

They need this kid to get signed so he can focus on the upcoming  season.

I think Ivan and his agent are just waiting to see what the other RFA defensemen are getting and then go from there. The Flyers finally have a potential homegrown number 1 defenseman so they better not trade him.
