TropicalFruitGirl26
Holy Cow, we signed Tomas Kaberle...errrr, Kevin Shattenkirk!! JR Ewing
Look at Shattenkirk... He'll play for the powerhouse team in the league, pad his stats and see what he gets on the July 1 casino floor in 2020.

Some people here know I've been a critic of Shattenkirk (mostly because of the overhype I believe he's gotten), but on a one year deal, sub 2M? Sure. And since he will be playing for a contract somewhere, I am betting he is going to play his ARSE OFF...and if he does, helps the Bolts, then wants to get another mega deal elsewhere (I doubt TB would be able to fit in a large Shattenkirk contract into their numbers scheme), fine. No problem with the man's skillset....I just never believed he was the type of guy you banked your franchise's success on, build around, and pay a gazillion dollars to. Erik Karlsson, Victor Hedman, maybe at some point a Rasmus Dahlin, hell, even Ryan Suter (despite his critics)…..those guys teams can and have built teams around. Shattenkirk? Very nice defender if you have an elite or two on the team already....but if he was so great, how did he manage to bounce around from St. Louie, to DC, to NY (where he WANTED TO BE), then get unceremoniously bought out? Shatty on the 'down low' will get no grief from me. Shatty the superstar (or wannabee superstar), however, will... but I think this stint in TB is more about him cashing in something big, but if he can help the Lightning win a Cup THIS year, I will gladly thank him and wish him the best of luck on NJ, NYI, or wherever else he ends up. JR Ewing
@TropicalFruitGirl26 Oh, this is a low risk/high reward kind of contract, and the sort of deal which is afforded a strong team that can offer a great tax situation for players.

And in which a player has $10M in his pocket from a buyout... "$10M, plus a shot at a Cup with a true contender? Thanks, New York Rangers!" The Rangers provide another lesson in why "ZOMG MUST SIGN TOP UFA LONG TERM ZOMG!" doesn't always work out for teams...
yave1964
Love the signing for the Bolts, Shattenkirk is a power play specialist who will probably play third pair/2nd power play, much less expected than what he faced in New York along with significantly less pressure. 50ish points, half on the power play hiding his defensive deficiencies on the third pair, Cooper is the perfect coach for him. He could not have found a better situation.

I've been equally critical. The nice thing about Tampa is they can hide him a little. He won't be top pair in Tampa being behind Hedman, McDonagh and Serge, at the very least. It may further limit Schenn's ice time, which is added plus. I don't like him, but at $1.75M, limited 5v5, and PP time on a one-year? Sure. But I probably wouldn't have done it myself.

But not near what he was in New York. He'll be much better protected. I think, though, that they will be glad he's leaving at the end of the season. He was a one-trick pony whose negatives were somewhat hidden on the Blues. He was always going to be a negative player when the Rags signed him -- but only because he cannot play defense. But the trade off was the power play. Post-injury, he doesn't even have that. He'll be a serviceable option on the third pair, but barely. Not a lot of risk here, though. Even at $1.75M/1 year, neither the Sabres nor the Flyers nor about two dozen other teams could afford to put him on the ice.
TropicalFruitGirl26
I find it hilariously rich that a Risto apologist points out Shattenkirk's +/- I will NEVER make an excuse for Shatty Burnt For a Hattie, but um....I dunno...something about logs in your own eyes while pointing out the speck in someone else's....or something like that... TropicalFruitGirl26
Hmmm.... Shattenkirk is "pissed off" over being bought out...https://www.cbssports.com/nhl/news/former-rangers-defenseman-kevin-shattenkirk-says-hes-pissed-off-over-being-bought-out/ ….and has a chip on his shoulder...https://www.tsn.ca/kevin-shattenkirk-signs-with-tampa-bay-lightning-1.1346934 Could this mean he will be super motivated this coming season? Or does it mean he will be obsessed with "getting even" with the Rangers?

But I am betting one of the reasons the Bolts went and got a bunch of "let's see" type defenders like Witkowski, Schenn, and this here Shattykirk is because they'd rather NOT see anymore of Jan Ruutta. And yes, I'd rather seen Schenn over Ruutta….. Some talking heads are saying a healthy Shatty should be an effective Shatty. We will see. Fortunately for him, he won't have to figure in the top four and get exposed by the likes of Ovechkin, MacKinnon, Seguin, Crosby, or Hall. The Bolts are probably one of only a couple teams that could pull this off and keep the risk minimal--though I can't think of the others at the moment. MAYBE Nashville? I don't know enough about Ruutta, but if you'd rather Schenn, then Ruutta has no business being in the NHL. I truly think Shatty is going to be as good as Shatty can be on the Bolts. And that can be effective if used correctly (something I think the Bolts can afford to do). He'll probably parlay that into really screwing a GM (that will subsequently soon be unemployed) on another team next summer. Not a fan of Shatty at all. Never have been. But this is as good a situation as it will ever get for him.

But this is as good a situation as it will ever get for him. Going in reverse order on two of your points, yea, my thoughts on Shatty were exactly this on my second post here. Win or lose, this looks like it is a one shot deal for him in TB....because whatever he thinks he would be worth (even if he does have a good year), the Bolts won't be able to fit him under the cap anyways (a case where maybe the cap crunch saves the Lightning from even THINKING of doing something silly like extending him for a longer contract)…..not with 21 and 22 yr old d-men Sergachev and Cernak needing new deals after this coming season. As for Ruutta… yea, a very average skating, not particularly noteworthy offensively skilled, turnover machine type player. Guy doesn't even check particularly effective. Best way to describe Ruutta would be.... Painfully average with some below average markings. And not that it would have mattered much against a red hot Columbus team in last year's playoffs, but I DID spend this offseason perturbed at coach Jon Cooper for playing Ruutta OVER Braydon Coburn. Coby really didn't play till Game 4 I believe, where it was too little too late...and from what I could tell, Coburn wasn't injured. He wasn't going to light anything up, but Coburn had been a HELL of a lot better than Ruutta in protecting the puck, so I really don't know what the heck Cooper was thinking.... At least if Shattenkirk is prone to turnovers, at least he has other skills that, if used right, can be utilized...he certainly skates, shoots, and has played more NHL games than 29 yr old Ruutta. Yep hey I just found this piece laying pick him and paste him in. It almost looks like the Leafs random collection of defensemen although they have some better pieces in Hedman, Mcdonagh and Serge. Oh well a nice forward group to go with several question Mark's on the back end. As long as they stay healthy it might not be an issue.
