Jimtown guy
3-4 years to long in my opinion. And when the refs swallow their whistles in the playoffs Spurg will get thrown around like a wet noodle provided they get back in the playoffs Edited September 19, 2019 by Jimtown guy
CreaseAndAssist
No way Spurgeon probably signs for anywhere less than 5 years. But I think 7 years is stupid. Even for Spurgeon.

It's crazy for me to think that a guy with one 40+ season deserves not only a 7Y/$7.5M per offer but an iron clad 4 years of NMC and a NTC list after that. At age 30. Exactly. Spurgeon's deal is even crazier when you compare him to newly signed Chabot: 22 years old, 1st round pick, scored 55 points last season (his 2nd), 8Y/$8 mil. per, for the first 4 years NO clause whatsoever and only a 10 team NTC after that. 30 years old, 6th round pick, scored career high 43 last season (his 9th!), 7Y/$7,5 mil. per and some gd clause in each year. Crazy that a player with so much less to show for gets SO much better a contract. The Wild organization just can't get it right... or can't (won't?) play hardball with anyone.

Subban 9M Ekman-Larsson 8.3M Ekblad 8M Letang 7.3M Vlasic 7M And all of the above signed their contracts in lower cap years Add Trouba's 8M as an RFA, IMO makes Spurgeon's 7.8M pretty close to fair market value. Now I do wish the term could have been a bit less. ^This. The Wilds front office shows it's complete incompetence as usual. I like Spurgeon is probably our best defenseman at playing defense but the Wild waited to long and then hit a panic button to sign him resulting in terms that are counterproductive to the franchise in the long run. If he wanted more then 4 years then it should have been a automatic no to any NTC/NMC. Money wise, due to Fenton wanting to vacation and forget about little things like hockey, is fair market. If Fenton along with Leipold had any idea on how to run a team would have gone and done the deal before average defense were getting $7.5 million plus. Ryan Suter Zach Parise Mikko Koivu Mats Zuccarello Jared Spurgeon All have NMC's... Devan Dubnyk Jason Zucker Have Modified No Trade clauses... The Wild love painting themselves into a corner. The term to Spurgeon is at least 2 years too long IMO. It's early but I am already getting nervous with Guerins decision making. Maybe it's just from bad past experiences with GMs. Spurgeon should have never got the terms he got. This is coming from a Spurgeon fan. Yea, the Wild sure love the corner of protecting old, skill declined guys to watch the young talented players leave. Seems like the cycle is going to continue. I wonder what young talent Seattle is going to grab from us.
IllaZilla
The bar was set with the Jacob Trouba deal. Year Clause Cap Hit Salary 2019-20 $8,000,000 $12,000,000 2020-21 NMC $8,000,000 $10,000,000 2021-22 NMC $8,000,000 $8,000,000 2022-23 NMC $8,000,000 $6,000,000 2023-24 NMC $8,000,000 $8,000,000 2024-25 MNTC $8,000,000 $6,000,000 2025-26 MNTC $8,000,000 $6,000,000 Spurgeons deal Year Clause Cap Hit Salary 2020-21 NMC $7,575,000 $9,000,000 2021-22 NMC $7,575,000 $9,000,000 2022-23 NMC $7,575,000 $6,000,000 2023-24 NMC $7,575,000 $8,000,000 2024-25 MNTC $7,575,000 $8,000,000 2025-26 MNTC $7,575,000 $7,000,000 2026-27 MNTC $7,575,000 $6,025,000 I really doubt Spurgeon would take less than a five year deal. The team didn't pay him the cash, so he got the NTC/NMC's. And again, this is because the owner thinks this is a Cup contending team. If Leipold wants to throw his money at 30 year old defensemen, that's his business, I guess. I don't have a problem with what Spurgeon got. Maybe a bit high, and a bit long, but who knows how long Spurgeon can play? And the Wild certainly don't have anyone coming through the pipeline that would make me say "We have to move Spurgeon, NOW!" If you look at the Chabot deal Year Clause Cap Hit Salary 2020-21 $8,000,000 $7,000,000 2021-22 $8,000,000 $7,000,000 2022-23 $8,000,000 $4,000,000 2023-24 $8,000,000 $8,000,000 2024-25 MNTC $8,000,000 $10,000,000 2025-26 MNTC $8,000,000 $10,000,000 2026-27 MNTC $8,000,000 $10,000,000 2027-28 MNTC $8,000,000 $8,000,000 He doesn't have any clauses for the first four season which would put him at 26, but if he's a great young defenseman, why would you want to trade him anyway? The NTC's kick in the fifth year, and also the poison pill of a $10M salary. My guess is that Ottawa set up the contract this way so they get the freedom to move him if the right offer comes along when he's young, and then when he's in his prime and right before the $10M salary kicks in they unload him on another team... 1

IllaZilla
7 hours ago, CreaseAndAssist said: Tough to disagree with you... I'm not saying Spurgeon's deal is a good deal. I think the Wild have far too many NTC's with older players, and it is going to bite them in the rear in a couple of years when Dumba, Brodin, Kunin, Fiala, etc. are due for a raise. I'm just saying that because Fenton was more concerned with seeing Mickey Mouse than seeing Spurgeon, the Rangers signed Trouba to his deal first. That set the bar. And because the NHLPA publishes all these salaries to head off any collusion by the owners, Spurgeon's agents were able to demand a similar deal. Had Fenton been like Elvis and TCB, maybe the Wild get Spurgeon on a five year deal, with a modified NTC. Or if it was a seven year deal, maybe the salary isn't as high, so the cap hit is lower. The NTC's were going to be there. He already had them in his last deal, so I doubt he would have given them up. Especially at his age and with a family. But that's all water under the bridge. Across the league, NTC/NMC's seem to be the norm with older players. There's only one team that doesn't seem to give them out, and that's Nashville (well, they have one, but they're the exception). They must have some team policy or something that won't allow them. The flip side of the is that players are going to ask for more bonus money or salary...pick your poison, I guess.
