Hutchinson: The Latest Scapegoat in Toronto

If you look at the game against Chicago last night, most of those goals against Hutchison he had no chance on. Chicago forwards were getting clean one-timers, were able to skate right into the slot untouched, etc...  Hutchison becomes the latest Leafs goalie to be ruined in Toronto.

I guess since you can't fire the six guys in front of him, you have to fire the goalie. Codi Cedi (lost coverage), Jake Muzzin (horrible turnover). Spezza's line seemed to be on the ice for every Chicago goal.

The Leafs stars showed up offensively. Matthews, Nylander, Tavares, all contributing. Their talent is being wasted on this pretender of a team.

Bob McKenzie echos my sentiments.  I looked at his record this season and the game in Chicago last night and thought wow, this kid never had a chance with that defence in front of him. I couldn't believe they gave up on him already. Unreal.

Andersen had 4 breakaways last night against Van., he stopped them all, that's the difference between a good/great goaltender and Hutch.

I think it's premature to give up on Hutch.

Yes but you're not expecting your backup goalie to be great, just good enough that he gives you a chance to win.  Great backup goalies become starting goalies.  :)

I didn't watch every game that Hutchison played but in the ones I did watch, the goals were virtually unstoppable.

Hutch has been a reasonable NHL goalie and he still might be.

Keefe was in a presser and he indicated that TO was seriously looking for a goalie, some of the media hacks figured he was asking/insisting on one from his statement.

I love how this team fixes everything but the defence.  I almost think it's a running gag/joke.

Here's a bit of trivia for you:

Name the last time the Leafs had the best GA (fewest goals allowed) in the league.

I'm only sure it was NOT during the Bester/Wregget years...LOL!

According to the source I read:

Chicago in 2015.  :)

LA in 2014.

In fact, LA was 25th in GF but won the Cup being #1 in GA. The same cannot be said of a weak defensive team (looking at recent winners).

@hobie  Umm yeah.  You were saying?   SIX TIMES in the salary cap era (up to 2016) the winner had the fewest GA in the playoffs.

OK, maybe I needed to clarify my question, when was the last time that the regular season GA champion won the Cup?

I would think that would be LA, maybe, but being the best during the regular season doesn't automatically result in the Cup.

We can see from from your fine research that even middlin' or worse GA during the playoffs can still deliver the Cup.

TO's d might be significantly different next year, TO went from the worse team in the NHL to a playoff team in the space of 1 year so who knows what might happen in the next  1 or 2 years. Liljegrin, Sandin, Kivihalme, Rasanen or whoever might be TO's next superior top d pairing player or TO might trade/sign one.

I think it's pretty exciting to realize that TO made the playoffs 3 years running with what many thought was a questionable d so the question now is can TO keep the forward core together while building a better d. I think that Winterpeg with it's GA standing, as of tonite, around 10th is showing that having a stellar d isn't the key to better d, it has to be a team effort.

The NYI have a middlin' d crew yet have the best GA in the NHL, what I want from TO is a better overall team effort, I'd think that man for man TO probably has a better d than the NYI.

I looked for those stats but didn't find them.  Didn't want to have to do any data mining on that one either.  (Trying to compile data to find what I'm looking for.)   Sorry.  :(

It can, but it usually doesn't.

I did the same analysis on the NYI that I did for TOR with the "Minus" stat.  Here's what I got:   :)
