Robby Fabbri - The Best Trade in a While?

Fabbri, is he heating up or what? 7 points in 6 games and the Wings with 3 wins in that span. Mind  you, the Wings had a pretty miserable end of October.

Robby the Knight - Detroit's saviour?

Of course not. What has given you guys a new start so to speak?

No question, the short-run answer is that this was a great trade by Stevie Y. It didn't have much potential downside, to be honest, because he was able to keep the cost low.

But Fabbri meets needs we had, namely resuscitating our second line. He has activated AA, and even Filppula is more productive.

The problem in STL was that with the depth there, when Fabbri would make mistakes, his 10 minutes of ice time would be dropped even further, because they have other players they could trust more to be responsible. The Red Wings have one line, and even they are known to make defensive errors on a semi-regular basis. So instead of being relegated to bench purgatory, he gets to play despite some mistakes. And he does have some skills/talent to offer while he learns, which the Wings need(ed) desperately.

I was not alone in thinking Holland needed to move on--whether to a higher office in the RW front office or elsewhere. Once Yzerman was selected, it was just a matter of time before he would improve on what KH had been doing. The bar had been pretty low for quite some time, with very little trade activity.

I think it helps that Stevie is just starting, so there is no need to try to justify past moves that might not be paying dividends. The line, "He doesn't have much to lose,"  comes to mind.

But Yzerman is smart. Always has been. He's got an eye for talent and opportunity. So far, this makes him look pretty smart, and my prediction is that the selection of Moritz Seider will do the same in another year or two or three.

I actually like the series of adds done by Yzerman in trades, Erne, a former 2nd rounder in need of a change of scenery, plays a hard game, solid player. Perlini and Fabbri, both mid first rounders in need of another chance somewhere else.

Perlini is snake bit, he has been hitting posts or just getting robbed but overall he has been meh, Fabbri had a hard time cracking the lineup of a championship team coming off two knee surgeries, he has found his confidence and his game.

All three were smart low rent adds, of these type of trades, usually if you are lucky one works out brilliantly, one player becomes usable and the third washes out. We need about six more just like these three, lol.

A Stevie Y move indeed....
There is no question Yzerman will soon have the Wings back in contention on a yearly basis... he is just a no-nonsense, realistic, and like you said, intelligent executive.

He took a terrible do-nothing Lightning franchise and turned them into a deep, perennial contender....with rows and layers of players in the system, and he and his staff will repeat that feat with the Red Wings.

As for Fabbri, yea, nothing like a fresh start with more actual playtime to get a guy going.
Talent was never the problem for him.... consistent playtime and health was.
We see now what he can really do when he has both.

Really looking forward to the Wings becoming contenders once again. With any luck, the Bolts will continue as that also, and we can get back to some good ol fashioned "playoff rivalry hatred" between us, eh? :ahappy:
