Scramble for free agents ahead of shortened season

With a matter of weeks until the greatest game in the world begins again, GMs' are looking to augment their rosters with remaining free agents and trades. Here is a thread to try to keep up with it.

CONNOR SHEARY signed last night with the Capitals as a 10-15 goal bottom six guy. Came on the cheap at 750k for the year.

MIKHAIL GRANLUND AND ERIC HAULA were brought in by the Predators to augment what went from a weak middle six to a position of strength.

MICHAEL FROLIK came aboard with the Habs as a solid third line winger who can move up in a pinch if the injury bug bites.

RYAN MILLER is being reported as being talked out of possibly retiring and instead will return again to the Ducks backing up Gibson.

TAMPBA BAY took care of housekeeping by resigning Cernak, Rutta, Joseph and Volkov though God knows how the cap is going to work for them. Two rumors floated for awhile now are that they are either going to trade a combination of Tyler Johnson and/or Palat/Killorn to Detroit for the ghost of Zetterberg to clear cap space, or that they will hold onto everyone by placing Kucherov on LTIR with a 'hip injury' until right before the start of the playoffs burying his cap hit.

Lots of free agents still remain

MIKE HOFFMAN is rumored to be going to the Blues who are going to LTIR Taresenko to free up money.

CHARA is possibly on the move, Boston is paying lip service, the big pilon thinks he still has top four game but the Bruins only want him back for third pair minutes and the Rangers are supposedly hot after him.

HAMONIC is deciding between more or less the same offer, trying to decide if he wants to play for Vancouver or Calgary

others who remain available are

ATHANASIOU

BOWEY

BRASSARD

SODERBERG

PERRY

HAINSEY

PERREAULT

MICHAEL STONE

GRABNER

HUTTON

JIMMY HOWARD

CRAIG ANDERSON

From a couple of days ago

CAGGUILA signed with the Coyotes, small, easy to push around player should fit right in with the rest of the soft easy to push around forwards in Arizona.

DUCLAIR signed with the Panthers on a one year deal, kind of a strange one, Dadonov headed north to Ottawa and Duclair left for the Cats to take his place so kind of sort of a trade. Both cut from the same cloth, Duclair had a hell of a first half last year before tailing off. Torts said he is the most frustrating player he ever coached on any level.

Duclair, the most frustrating? That's something from a bench boss is a literal toxic time bomb......Cagguila is fast, hard-nosed and a winner, having led the University of North Dakota to its NCAA championship in 2016.....

I do believe I think their careers are over unless a team gets hit with the injury bug.

The league is talking about carrying a taxi squad so guys like Hutton/Howard will likely got signed by somebody. I am no Howard apologist and lets face it he was awful, putrid even but he will fit as a solid 3G.

As for Hutton, quite honestly i think he is a decent 6/7D and was surprised the Kings didnt retain him but looking their roster over they are giving his spot to Durzi or another one of their really good kids. You could do worse as a fill in.

Couple more signings....

Koekkoek has signed with the Oilers presumably as a 6/7D or taxi squad guy. Just a body. A couple of sources are claiming the Oilers all but have Travis Hamonic signed but i havent found anything official.

A very interesting signing is Soderberg signing with the Hawks, they now roll Toew, Strome, soderberg and Shaw or Zack smith down the middle, four lines deep at center. Soderberg is what he is, 40 points a year, good man in the dot and responsible in both ends. Nothing sexy but a hell of a good 3C. The team is long in the tooth and goaltending is a mystery but Zack smith, Soderberg, Janmark, Zadorov and Wallmark are all tough as nails to play against and a youth infusion with Dach and Ian Mitchell locks to make the roster as well. A lot of old guys who can still play, in a shortened season in a very bad division the Hawks could make some noise.

Del Zotto  signed a tryout contract with the Jackets which makes sense as they traded Murray and Nutivaara away in cost cutting moves and need experience for the third pair.

The only thing that kind of surprises me is that Del Zotto had run ins early in his career with Torts, Del Zotto is a left handed shot who Torts was trying to get to play on his off side and Del zotto fought him tooth and nail publicly, the two of them were a poor match together. I know time heals all wounds but this is probably a case of 1) del Zotto couldnt find any other offer and 2) the Jackets couldnt get a better player to come into the fold.
