yave1964
Small but possibly significant move late last night. Derek Stepan who was a 50 point a year two way center not that awful long ago was dealt to the Senators in exchange for the CBJ second rounder in 2021, a pick previously added in the Dzingel trade. Arizona is more than happy to move Stepan and his final year of his deal out, and with the loss of draft picks in recent years used to add Kessel and Taylor Hall and having a pick taken by the league and the unfortunate incident of drafting a player who they had no choice but to cut, the Coyotes need to add whatever draft assets they can. Stepan has slipped in the last two years, getting a pick that will likely be somewhere in the neighborhood of 40-45 in exchange for a player not in their plans is a great deal for them. And this gives them a chance to slot young promising Barrett Hayton into the top six to see what he has. As for the Sens, they are in desperate need of center help, Anisimov is regressing, Tierney is a 3C forced to punch above his weight class because of necessity, Josh Norris is promising but not quite ready and Colin White who they would love to take the 1C spot and run with it failed miserably in that role last year. Stepan will slot in with White/Tierney in the top 9 allowing Norris to break in more slowly either on the wing or centering the 4th line. Ottawa also reaches the cap floor with the move. The Senators have had a hell of an offseason adding Dadonov, Murray, Watson and Stepan, veterans with pedigree as well as getting Stuetzle and Sanderson in the top of the first round, this is not the same team that ended last year. They truly beleive they are going to contend for a playoff spot in the Canadian division this year between the above adds and the talented pipeline of ready and near ready prospects. Stepan is a good add if he can come close to his numbers from a few years ago. I really see this as a good deal for both clubs as both get what they want.

Math
I should be the only one to not see Ottawa finishing dead last in the canadian division. Problem is, I don't see any other team finishing dead last...
