So Ghost is NOT injured.  He is in COVID protocol.

Trade him now, his value will ... well, the rest would be a lie.

Some how the subject got changed to Ghost having covid....how does that happen? Asking for a friend...

In case you forgot, Ghost was actually being discussed in the PLD trade talk. 😆

And the discussion morphed into who they would lose from an expansion protection standpoint if they traded for PLD, which lead to a debate about Jake or NAK so it's all relevant.

NAK is relevant, 6 degrees from Dubois.

Sorry you have to do the footwork to scroll back to know how it all ties together.

I can't see the Kraken taking Voracek if he's available. For these start up franchises, especially once the damage from the pandemic is taken into consideration and just how much the cap will do, that will just cause all sorts of cap issues for them.

With that being said, I'm feeling very certain that Voracek will be protected in that he's good friends with the captain, is well liked by his teammates, and is not a locker room distraction or problem. Those three factors are incredibly important. Losing a player like Voracek could have a devastating effect on the locker room and I think Fletcher knows that.

So if you don’t think Seattle wouldn’t take him, then I would protect NAK and leave Voracek and his bloated contract unprotected and we get to keep NAK for sure. Since we are saddled with G, Hayes , JVR and Voraceks big contracts , it would be very smart to leave JVR and Jake unprotected and hope to god Seattle takes one of them. We have new contracts coming up  next year for Laughton ,Sanheim, Hart , Gustafson and Coots in 2 years.  We need to dump one big contract for sure ,especially with the flat cap ,we will need as much $$ as possible for these new contracts. Coots will certainly want as much as Hayes.  I would also trade Ghost before risking him in the expansion draft. I guarantee Seattle takes him. His contact is reasonable and he can move the puck and shoot the puck. So if we can somehow luck out and Seattle takes Voracek or JVR it helps us the most in dumping a big contract and creates room on the wing for Frost, Brink or Forester. We want to give Seattle as few choices as possible, by trading Ghost and protecting NAK , so it can come down to Haag, JVR or Jake . Losing Haag would be worse than losing Jake or JVR. We just have to hope they take one of the big contracts.

It's hard to guess at the 31 team's Exposed Lists and the Kraken's strategy as they get to selecting the Flyers player.

My guess is that they go young and take Bunnaman, Hagg, or Friedman from this Flyers Exposed List (below).

RJ - So if we can somehow luck out and Seattle takes Voracek or JVR it helps us the most in dumping a big contract and creates room on the wing for Frost, Brink or Forester.

Agree with you RJ.

However, the top-9 'vacancy' spot, actually 3d line 'vacancy' spot, for the wing in 2021-22 would be filled from this Depth Chart:

- Frost (C, maybe wing but no experience there at all levels of his career)

- Sandin (RW/LW/C)

- Laczynski (LW/RW/C)

- Allison (RW)

A shot at our Flyers Protected List 7F/3D/1G:

1) Giroux F (NMC)
2) Hayes F (NMC)
3) Couturier F
4) Konecny F
5) Patrick F
6) Lindblom F
7) Aube-Kubel F
1) Provorov D
2) Sanheim D
3) Myers D
1) Carter G

(Assumes Ghost is traded soon before getting too close to the July Expansion Draft. It may be hard for Fletcher to get value as other GMs know he must unload to get 'something' - - unless a contending team gets hit with a long-term injury to an offensive defenceman and therefore they may pay a reasonable asset for Ghost.)

Exposed List:

van Riemsdyk (Age 32, Cap Hit 7M)
Voracek (Age 32, Cap Hit 8.25M)
Bunnaman F
Twarynski F

Morin LW
Kase F

Hagg D
Friedman D (RH)

Exempt:

First and Second year Pro (at June 2021)
Farabee F 2nd year
Frost F 2nd year
Ustimenko G 2nd year
Sandstrom G 2nd year

Don't have to consider protecting - Laughton, Raffl, Gustafsson because they will be pending UFAs (UFAs on July 28) and Seattle would not take them. Smart by Fletcher. Any of these 3 can be re-signed anytime after the July 21 Expansion Draft, if mutual.

That was my point exactly.

It's nothing personal vs Jake I just don't want to give them NAK he is not Bellmore.

And IF they took Jake it would move a big contract out off the books so that money could be used elsewhere on the roster.

I mean all i hear is "No one will trade for Jake and you won't move that contract blah blah blah ok so then let Seattle pluck him.

I mean sure I would prefer them take JVR but of the two Jake would be more attractive.

And his 3 years at 8.25mill could be spread out to Hart, Sanheim and whomever else is they want to reup.

Oh and since this is the subject Dubois (since in this thread we traded for him) and he is only signed for two year some of Jake's money could go to him.

However if they were to get him it would still bump NAK out.

Giroux

Coots

Hayes

TK

Patrick

Lindblom

Dubois

So I guess it would matter they would have a choice between JVR, Jake and NAK at forward.

So unless you want to lose NAK for nothing then just throw him in on the Dubois deal. That would suck.

Sorry for the long post.

The thread was about taking Dubois so say that went down  the protection list would look different for sure.

Dubois bumps NAK out of that.

Just pointing it out. So might as well move NAK in the deal for PLD.

Ghost

NAK

and whatever else is required.

Rubtsov

2nd

???

Would that be enough asking for a friend.

I would really like to see him get a long look with Ivan and see how that goes.

He was with Ivan when he has his best season maybe now he is healthy he can find that game again.

I wasn't too impressed with Braun on the top pair. I thought he looked not great.

It seemed like Sullivan wanted Jankowski and Tanev on vs our top pair. Those guys targeted Braun for the forecheck and they had success doing it.

I agree I hate we brought him back after that dreadful playoff performance by him.

Chuckles should have pursued a better option than him on a two year deal.

Pens abused him I think and he drug that pair down. Ivan is skating with a right hand shooting Mcdud now...

...I would give Friedman a shot over Braun again.

I would at least try it in practice.

Friedman was top pair in LHV so...it's not like he's thinking the NHL is going to be a country club.

And his partner is a ****** stud so, he can just skate and be smart.

He was a power play QB in college as well kid has some good wheels and a very nice shot.

The only knock on him is he is 5-11 but he has some snarl to his game as well.

IMO, ultimately AV will move Gus to that right side with Provorov - - -

- - -  after Gus' adjustment period to his new team, new system, and new coaching. AV is starting Gus with Hagg on the 3rd pair with the ease of communication with his home buddy and adjustment time.

Quote:

His [Gus] skill set, his ability to go back on pucks and make good decisions and transition the puck up the ice, we thought was a very important element to add to our group."  Fletcher.

It won't be long. Gus is a 4 year NHL veteran and has 1st pair experience playing with Duncan Keith.

Quotes:

At 28, Gustafsson has been around long enough to know the ropes on a top pairing. And besides playing with Keith, Gustafsson also had a chance to compete with other stars (forwards) such as three-time Stanley Cup champions Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews.

Gus is LH but has played almost exclusevly on the Right Side the last 3 years and prefers it.

“I played a couple games on the left with Calgary (recently) but it didn’t feel right,’’ he [Gus] said. “So right now I’m used to playing on the right side. I feel more confident on the right side. Whatever the coaches want me to do, I play there.’’

“For the most part, I have liked what I have seen,” Vigneault said. “I do think as he [Gus] gets more familiar with the way we want to do things, the way we approach our preparation, our expectations — coaches to players — I think the more he understands, the better he is going to play. It is hard for someone coming into a new style of play, a new emphasis on different things, but he seems like a very good young man.”

Gustafsson has been “very receptive to the things I have told him, and Mike Yeo, who runs the D, has told him,” Vigneault said. “He’s picking it up every day, and that is what he needs to do if he is going to be an effective player for us.”

Left winger James van Riemsdyk has faced Gustafsson in NHL games and, now, in training-camp scrimmages.

“He’s super smooth,” van Riemsdyk said. “He moves the puck really well and is just a smart player all around. He’s definitely a guy we’re happy to have on our team. The last couple of days we’ve gotten a chance to do some power-play stuff with him and he is really good up top there, too. That will definitely be a big part of his contribution to the team.”

"[Gustafsson] has tremendous deception with the puck, tremendous poise," general manager Chuck Fletcher said. "We don't have a defenseman that sees the ice like he does, he can play on the power play. It's a different type of skill set than Matt ... there wasn't going to be that ability to replace Matt per se with the same style."

"We think his (Gustafsson) skill set meshes really well with what we need," Fletcher said.

"We think we have a lot of strong defenders on our team and we're very structured defensively as a group. His skill set, his ability to go back on pucks and make good decisions and transition the puck up the ice, we thought was a very important element to add to our group." "Gustafsson’s just got tremendous deception and vision."

It will be interesting for us to watch Gus carefully for his skill set and his adjustment here with our Flyers.

Fletcher was wise to sign Gus to a 1 year contract. It protects from Gus being selected by Seattle in the July Expanson Draft and allows Fletcher to re-sign Gus assuming Gus has played well, Gus is happy here (including with his 3 Swede buddies), and there is mutual interest.

Optimistic for Gus' success on the top-pair with Provorov.

I think it is paramount to getting Ghost going so when he is cleared I would prefer him on the top pair.

It would be huge if you could get Ghost going to his former 60 point season play.

Not saying it will ever happen again.

But if you want to pump up his trade value to move before the trade deadline that is the way to do it.

If you don't want to leave him as a option for Seattle then if you could just get a 3rd for him you take that. Then slot Gus on the top pair.

Good points.

But, with considering Ghost with Provorov, and focusing on points, we are also mindful of Ghost's play in the D-zone vs Gus' play in the D-zone. IMO, not even close, Gus is much better at puck retrieval, great vision, and fast D-zone exits in transition up ice.

It's perceptive of you with the sensing that Ghost may get some prime-time play as a showcase to the League to help his trade value. Hopefully it does not backfire.

Exactly. So that is why you put Ghost with Ivan.

Gus can play with a Braun or Hagg because of points you just made.

So Ghost gets sheltered some playing with the best defenseman on the roster.

I'm not sure if you get my point.

But Ghost hasn't done so well with Braun and Hagg because they too leave a lot to be desired in all those areas.

So a strength covering a weakness.

You don't want wo guys with weakness playing together then the whole pair is a liability.

I get your reasoning, but I don't think on the top pair, against the opponents' top lines, is the place to shelter a suspect defenseman.

Putting him with Hagg might work if they HAD to, but not a great idea long term. Probably not a good idea with either Sanheim or Myers, but I'm not keen on splitting them up anyway.

I don't have a great answer. Really, he's a power play and 3v3 specialist at this point.  But they have Gus, Myers, Sanheim, and Provorov (pretty much in that order, for me) for that.

At some point, if the Flyers can't get a player for him, get a 2nd or 3rd round draft pick. Not ideal, but keep the supply chain coming.

I'd really rather not. Provo is better than Ghost on both sides. I wouldn't want him hampered because he has to watch his partner's back all the time. He needs to be able to use all his tools and not just play the back end.

I mean, I'm quite firmly on the move Ghost bandwagon. There's really no point keeping him. We have a bunch of dmen who are just better than him in pretty much any situation. Move him and get something to feed the pipeline if possible, or keep him as Vegas bait, but I have to imagine there will be a more enticing option than Ghost for that.

He has to do that now with Braun now.

Ghost had a 60 point season playing Ivan before how do we know he can't a long with Ivan be successful again unless you try it.

If it doesn't work you can change it up again!!!

I meant to add I am am too it is just inevitable you can't have a 7th D man making 4 plus million in the sky box every night.

So I am just trying to see if I can one improve his stock for a trade and two see if I'd rather move him or Hagg.

Hagg is one of the worst rated D men in the league when you look at his numbers.

So trying to evaluate assets.

PLD in our Flyers Division?

Jon Lane @JonLaneNHL / NHL.com Staff Writer

Dubois wants to leave Blue Jackets, Tortorella says.
Center, who led Columbus in scoring last season, on 'short leash' with coach.

Hockey Buzz Jan 16

According to multiple sources, Dubois wants to be a Ranger and play with buddy Panarin. How this would work out is still to be determined.

Forget Dubois he wants to play for the Rangers.

Forget Laine.

Go after Barkov.

His contract is up after next season and said he won't resign with Florida.

So spend the assets for that guy!!!

I send them Patrick, JVR, Frost and Cam York.

It may need more but it is a start to discussions!

Down the middle:

Lindblom Barkov Konecny

Giroux Coots Jake

Farabee Hayes NAK

Laughton Laczynski Raffl

Not to shabby!
