4 shots on goal. Total embarrassment

After one of the best periods of hockey I’ve seen them play in a very, very long time, they come out and lay an Egg in the 3rd period of a must win game.

Guess Jake was right when he said, nobody plays 60 minutes, that’s just a cliche.

At this point Fletcher should be on the phone with whoever he answers to these days and getting Comcast to agree to retain salary to get guys like JVR and Jake out of here at the deadline.

It's reminiscent of them battling their way to three OT wins in round two against the Isles last year and then not showing up in Game 7.

I'm not sure this trend changes with half your leadership group at 33 and 31 having done this up and down swing for the past eight years. Give up two in the first, "play hard" and tie it up in the second, then, apparently... crickets.

Especially with a mindset that you don't actually have to play entire games as long as you look good at some point along the way...

I am wondering about watching tomorrow night. Is it worth it?  What's the value-added? I'd be better off doing some exercise.  Maybe I'll do something during the second period.  They generally give up the first goal, which is a good predictor of outcome for the game in the NHL.

Yeah...CF should take offers.  Low to mid-range draft picks that open up slots and reduce cap space are probably more valuable to the team than much of the current squad.  I echo what others have said--Morin and Ghost may be an interesting third pairing.  But if Ghost goes...at this point, as a long-time fan, it is almost unwatchable, and any roster changes may make a better squad next year, which is what we need to think about.

Are we "excited" about a $4.5M third pair defenceman for two more years?

Yes. 12 ounce curls will do the trick.

Don't watch unless you want stress.

Might I suggest lifting this 20 times a game. It helps me, since I'm out of scotch, at the moment.

That game definitely had the feeling of an "end" to me.

I think big changes are in store. I don't know what they will look like.

I don't think the market for improving a team will be good at the trade deadline.

My hope is whatever gets done leads to a more consistent team. There are times this group has played well but not often enough.

I don't think the Hayes, Giroux, JvR, Voracek contracts will all be on the Flyers payroll next year.

I had some high(but still modest) expectations for this season and this team never quite measured up to them. Even in their better moments they were still ...eh?

tough way to lose... but no surprise. Flyers evidently shot their load in the 2nd and had nothing left for the 3rd. Just a question of "when" not "if" the Bruins would score the GWing goal. Too bad it was Gost, who had a great game otherwise. His job was to block that pass across and he didn't = SH goal. Game over season all but over.

It's a great question.  My answer would be he's probably a good PP specialist and quite possibly a second pairing person with the right partner.  But, I acknowledge is shortcomings and if he goes, he goes.  Sadly, the recent waiver suggests he ain't going easily or without salary eat or whatever.

It may not be, but standing pat is unacceptable. If you have to throw a pick on a player, to make him more enticing for another team...you do so. The NHL trade deadline has not been this hyped up tradefest that everyone wants it to be, but I hope more than EVER, that they can unload one of these way overvalued and pverpriced veteran players, who have had it too good for too long here. I also want an upgrade defensively, in front of Hart. If they can do those two things, I might be thrilled enough to go drunk streaking.

Yes they are stuck with him no one even wanted to claim him for free so at least he and Morin have looked suitable for a 3rd pair.

Wish they could say the same for the 2nd pair. But that is a whole new argument.

I mean discussion.

So yes instead of making popcorn they have found a spot in the lineup.

Now Gus can make popcorn till he is gone for all I care.

And as we discussed somewhere around here before buying out Ghost isn't and option.

But I would certainly pick up 2 mill of his salary if you can find a taker.

There are $9M reasons over the next two seasons that he wasn't "free" :hocky:

Now a $2.5M third pair player with his skillset is something worth discussing.

Where do they get one of those?

Yes I know that I am saying they didn't have to give up anything for him just claim him you like years ago when they waived Mcdud.

I hope so so get on the phone after the conclusion of the season.

Barring Seattle claiming him. 🤣

Greetings:

Ghost falls under the heading of "Fallen Angel with Possible Redemption."  His contract looked reasonable a few years ago. Now it looks pricey.  No GM can predict with certainty what a guy's health or trajectory will be.  This takes us back to comments of a few days ago.  One is the "Doug Wilson Theory" that contracts over five years are detrimental to a team.  Seattle may take a look.

We were pissed at MacDonald.  In part it was length. In part salary, but mostly the latter.  A few years ago, Ghost at 4.5 looked cheap.  If the dude gets 30 points and QB's the PP (or backup) for two years, I will forgive the trespass of prior management.

i think it's a combination of everything, covid, injuries that we dont know about, lack of practice and lack of size. if you look at the islanders, bruins, caps, their size is a big matchup problem for us, you look at tk, ghost, provy, nak, they are getting outmatched with the opponents size, it's the reason why they are struggling. if anything the defense has to be retooled  and he has to get rid of the small players and get bigger players especially on the third and fourth lines, they are getting outmatched too.

raffl, laughton, tk, ghost, nak, braun, they have to go. heck if someone wants provy and gives us a better player for him, i wouldnt hesitate either.  if dougie is available get him, if they are bigger cheaper forwards and dman in fa, get them too.

I suspect that by October 1, 2021, many of these folks will be gone, though Laughton's departure would be a mixed blessing unless it is viewed as opening a roster slot for someone with possible upside offensively.  I was surprised Raffl stayed and PEB left on last expansion, but I am no GM.

Your size comment is interesting.  In the old days, we were big but slow.  Now we are faster but probably small.  That a plus for Sam the Man.

It isn't just size but what you do with the size.

Phil Myers 6-5

Travis Sanheim 6-3

Plenty of size sure they might need more muscle but if they play bigger then it wouldn't be an issue...but they just aren't fond of the physical play it seems.

Hard to change someone's mental makeup.

I was pissed about MacDonald for the amount, the length, the cost to acquire him, and the fact that he had no obvious role on the team.

Aside from that, it was a great signing.

I tried to see the "good" in that deal, alas, I was thwarted.

Kris Russell, if only.

sigh.

I would subtract TK and Gost bc I believe they're both special players. Trading Konecny would be a mistake unless it's a truly sweet deal for the Flyers imho. It's been 3 straight games now where he's "back." No way do I trade this 24-year old top-line fwd unless it's a ridiculously good offer.

Gost we already know nobody wants so the Flyers better embrace him for what he is, for what's special about him: an offensive threat whenever he's on the ice. Put him with the right partner - maybe Morin - and be happy you have him to rotate in when you need an offensive push, and to QB your PP (and then please work on that PP).

I'd keep Raffl too. I know you want to add size and he plays bigger than his frame. Is he essential? Of course not but players like him are. Let's face it there are only so many big n heavy, naturally-talented guys to go around. Nobody's got all Kopitars and Byfugliens.

that's because this team has no offensive players, it's all grit and grind types, there's no snipers. this is where chuck has to retool this team to get more snipers, that's why they are passing so much.

and not very good at it either
