  1. Nov. 23: Bison Sweep Leads to 4th Place MANITOBA BISONS 6 UBC THUNDERBIRDS 4 Links: :. [LS Summary] : [CIS Boxscore] :. [UBC Game Story] :. [U of M Reposted Story] : [U of M Boxscore] :. [CW Story (on all games)] :. [CIS Saturday Roundup (to be uploaded)] A road sweep, with both in regulation time, is never easy. And for the Bisons to achieve this in Beatiful British California has not been easy in recent years. Therefore this achievement should be celebrated, especially when it causes the first half of the season to end with the Bisons tied for 4th place. After a slow start, this very much represents a high-water mark for the team. The Bisons used the same line-up as they had on Friday night. However, UBC got off to a better start and had the 1st goal, from Neil Manning on a powerplay. However, it took the Bisons a mere 17 seconds to equalize, when Jordan DePape scored his 1st as a Bison. (He has had lots of chances so I was surprised to see this was his 1st.) Jesse Paradis (really finding his form with his 5th) gave the Bisons a 2-1 lead. This time it was UBC's turn to tie the score within a few seconds, as Nate Fleming made it 2-2 at the 1st intermission. A strong 2nd period was the key to the Bisons' victory. Aaron Lewadniuk needed only 30 seconds to notch his 6th of the season, and then Brendan Rowinski claimed his 3rd. So, 4-2 for the Bisons. The 'Birds had every incentive to throw everything but the kitchen sink at the Bisons heading into the 3rd. They trailed by two and faced falling 6 points out of a playoff spot. They did rack up a load of shots, and goals from Luke Lockhart and Greg Fraser levelled the score at 4-4. As is often the case, once the trailing team ties the score they soon fall behind again. That's what happened in this game. Luke Cain racked up his 3rd and Ian Duval his 6th, and there you have it. The 2nd night in a row the Bisons got 6 goals from 6 different players. The Bisons are 6-7-1 and in a 3-way tie with Sask. and MRU for 4th place. UBC is 3-10-1 and alone in 7th. The 2nd half starts next weekend, which is also the last one before the Christmas break. Both sides are off to Saudi Alberta next weekend, the Bisons to face the Evil Monkeys and the 'Birds to face the Pronghorns. So all I can go by is the stats page. This one certainly drew a lot of interest in Edmontown. There was a crowd of 2,927 on hand. The Monkeys kept their goaltender rotation going (i.e. Mucha on Friday, Siemens on Saturday). The Dinos had to depart from that since Lazaruk did not dress for either game, making DeSerres the starter both nights. The Dinos did have a 2-0 lead after the 1st period, but the Monkeys were able to rack up the shots on goal needed to force OT. The game-tying goal came with just 20 seconds left. Thus ends the 1st half of the season with Bedrock in 1st at 13-0-1 and the Monkeys in hot pursuit at 13-1-0. Next weekend both sides are at home, with the Monkeys facing Manitoba and the Dinos facing Regina. LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS 5 MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS 6 (in a shoot-out) Links: :. Early in the 3rd period MRU enjoyed a 5-2 lead and held a wide margin in the shots on goal. Cody Chartier's natural hat-trick spilling over from the 2nd to 3rd periods broke open a 2-2 tie. But a quick shot of Viagra and the H0rny Ones were all over them. But, alas, there was no scoring in the OT. MRU has done well to manufature a 6-7-1 record despite being out-scored 48-34. [CW Story (on all games)] :. [CIS Friday Roundup (to be uploaded)] The Bisons picked up a very decisive victory on the wet coast to keep pace in the race for 3rd place. I was listening to the on-line radio broadcast from UBC and the announcers seemed to think that the play was all one way for the first two periods en route to a 3-1 lead. They also mentioned that Jeremy Schappert was shaken up on a hit. Since Crowley and Bestland are still out of action, the blue line is looking thin right now. The LeagueStat summary has a +/- icon so you can see who was on the ice for each goal. In the 3rd period the Bisons had 5 forwards on for one goal, and 4 forwards for two more. The Herd got single markers from 6 different players - Dylan Kelly, Jory Coates, Jeremy Schappert, Aaron Lewadniuk, Tyler Dickin, and Luke Paulsen. Joe Caligiuri was in goal. [Every Link Re: CIS Hockey] This is a funny week in the CW. Regina and Sask are playing a Wednesday-Thursday home-and-home series, so this post is in the style of both a preview and an out-of-town scoreboard. This week also marks the end of the first half of the season. Since the CW is a perfectly balanced 8-team league, each team will have played one two-game series against each other opponent. The Bisons have been hit by a goal-scoring drought never before seen in these parts. However, they now have found three line combos that work and a traditional 4th line. The goaltending has been spotty but in the end rank 17th of the 36 teams in the CIS in save percentage (.906). The defence, even with injuries to Darren Bestland and Dane Crowley, has been pretty good. They have often prevented teams from having high quality scoring chances. But those dreaded long shots have beaten both Bison goaltenders just a bit too often. UBC was supposed to be on the way up. The last two seasons they have been edged out by Calgary in the race for 4th and then lost to them in the playoffs. Instead of closing the gap, Bedrock U has gone 12-0 and are challenging the Evil Monkeys for 1st, and UBC sits alone in 7th. Thus far the formula for the mid-5 in the CW has been: sweep Lethbridge, be swept by Bedrock U and the Monkeys, and split against everybody else. The only deviations from "the formula" have been: - Manitoba's OTL v Bedrock U; - UBC's OTL v the H0rny Ones; - Manitoba's sweep by the Banjo-Cats; - UBC's sweep by the Banjo-Mutts. While there are pretty good odds of a split in this series, both sides could use 3 or even 4 points. With 2nd half home series coming up against Regina, Mount Royal, and UBC one has to like their chances of a charge to 3rd place. [U of A Preview Story] : [U of C Preview Story] Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. This is your Main Event! Friday night in Bedrock, Saturday night in the City of the Apes. It is extremely rare that a team in the CW goes 12-0 to start the season. Rarer still is it to see two teams do it in the same year. Yet here we are. These teams split four pre-season games, so they are not unfamiliar with one another. I have seen both of these teams live. IMO the Evil Monkeys are vastly superior. Bedrock U was frankly likely to get 4 points against the Bisons. And if there was any way to award the Primates more than 4 points in a series, they would have earned them. There are way too many floppers in the Bedrock line-up. Sooner or later, it will catch up to them. That said, it seems that the league is gradually rising to the level of Alberta as the season progresses. Both sides have two good goaltenders who have split the duties thus far. In fact, Calgary's tandem has the best save percentage in the CIS. I hope to get a chance to watch as much as possible of these games on-line. [U of L Reposted Story] : [U of L Boxscore] :. [CW Story (on all games)] :. [CIS Saturday Roundup (to be uploaded)] Saturday's rematch in this series was more of a replay. The main difference was that the Bisons were not hitting goalposts. The teams lined up exactly as they did for Friday's game, except that Lethbridge replaced 21 Mappin with 25 McLachlan, who I never saw on the ice. And the H0rny Ones started Ketlo in place of Tait in goal. The 1st period was Lethbridge's best of the weekend. They had 10 shots on goal and were mixing it up fairly well. But the Bisons scored twice on 16 shots. Craig Scott scored his 1st of the season and Jesse Paradis notched his 4th. 30 seconds into the 2nd period it was 3-0 Bisons when Dylan Kelly scored his 2nd. The Bisons had the momentum and dominated the period with a 17-6 shots advantage. Taylor Dickin scored his 1st of the season at 5:44, and Damien Ketlo's scary night in goal was over. Then 16 seconds later Dickin scored again. Ian Duval's 5th goal of the year made it 6-0. His deke around the defencemen was one of the best moves of the season. The 3rd period was mostly an exercise in playing out the string. Dickin got his hat-trick goal, the shots were 13-7 for the Bisons, and the Bison 4th line got loads of playing time. The Bisons are now 4-7-1 and conclude the 1st half of the season next weekend in British California. Lethbridge falls to 1-11-0 and will next play a home-and-home series with MRU. The Bisons outshot Lethbridge 17-6. The game was very choppy, with the referees calling 2 minutes for everything short of looking too good. (Lethbridge wound up going 0-for-9 on the power play on the night.) Dylan Tait held his side in the game. The Duval line was particularly dangerous throughout the period. Lethbridge only had the Bisons penned in once in this game, and that was on a 2-man advantage. Otherwise this was likely the easiest shut-out of Joe Caligiuri's career. The Bisons were even more dominant in the 2nd period, outshooting Lethbridge 16-3. However, there was no scoring until mid-way through when Luke Cain notched his 2nd goal of the season, converting a 3-way passing play with Scott and Kelly. Jory Coates notched his first goal as a Bison to provide some insurance. He stretched out his 6'6" frame to collect a rebound and wrap ita round Tait. If Coates could continue improving, and maybe add 20 lbs., he could be quite a player a year from now. The only goal of the 3rd period was from Aaron Lewadniuk on a gift-wrapped assist from Duval. After Duval pulled out all the stops he passed to Lewadniuk only a few feet away from a yawning net. The Bisons are now 3-7-1, and the 'Horns fall to 1-10-0. The rematch goes Saturday at 6:00 p.m. at the Wayne Fleming Arena. The linked U of M story says it is on CanadaWest.tv, though I did not see it listed. [Every Link Re: CIS Hockey] To put it bluntly, this is a series where the Bisons need a sweep. Four points, no questions asked. I have not seen a team so dominated in the CW as this year's Lethbridge squad. The fact they stole a win from UBC two weeks ago was cause to celebrate. Every team's playoff plan includes earning 8 points against the 'Horns this year. The Bison offence has lacked finish thus far, and the goaltending has been so-so. On the goal-scoring front, the Bisons have carried the play more often than not, only to be foiled time and time again. If they could develop better puck luck they would dramatically improve their results. I get the sense that cashing in goals would help them at both ends of the rink. They do seem to be pressing too much at times. In the Bison goal, Caligiuri started as #1, as he was two years ago. After 4 regular season games the job was won by Dubyk. Last weekend, they each got a start and Dubyk was yanked from his. Will Coach Sirant return to the rotation? Or will Caligiuri be the starter? My vote is for a rotation. Bison captain Dane Crowley left last Saturday's game early with an undisclosed injury. So one big question is whether or not he will be in the lineup. This series is the final one at home for the Bisons until the new year. They wrap up the first half next weekend with a trip to UBC. That will be followed by a trip to Saudi Alberta before the exams and Christmas break comes about. Can the enigmatic Tweety-Birds do anything about this? They are not off to a bad start. They just look like they will have a challenge to finish in their usual 5th place this year. Frankly, they are in the same boat as Sask, and for that matter Manitoba, Mount Royal, and Regina. All teams that (with few exceptions) have been beating Lethbridge, losing to Alberta and Calgary, and splitting series aginst one another. [U of M Reposted Game Story] : [U of M Boxscore] :. [CW Story (on all games)] :. [CIS Saturday Roundup (not uploaded)] This was beyond disappointing for the Bisons. They have dominated the Banjo-Cats (including in this pre-season) and should have expected at least 2 points on the weekend. Instead, they suffered the first sweep of one B level team by another B level team in the CW thus far in 2013. Not that the Bisons lacked opportunities. In fact, they carried the play for much of the game. They outshot Regina by a margin of 53-34. That's right, 53 shots on the road. However, Lucas Gore scooped them up like crap in kitty litter (most of the time). On the other hand, Deven Dubyk was pulled from the Bison goal after two periods. Will Coach Sirant now stick with the goaltender rotation? I think they should. The team has had shaky goaltending so far. If you go with one guy in back-to-back weeks and then need to switch, all you yhave is a cold guy in reserve. I would rotate them (like Regina, and basically everybody but Saskatchewan). Then if one is clearly better for the home stretch you could ride the hot hand. Two years ago, Caligiuri was a capable starter. Dubyk also looks capable. One start per weekend should be manageable for both of them. The Kittens are now 6-4 and the Bisons 2-7-1. But Regina visit Alberta next weekend, whilst Manitoba hosts Lethbridge. The winner was scored with less than 3 minutes left in the game. Joe Caligiuri was back in goal for the Bisons and, by the stats, had a credible performance. Will they now rotate goaltenders? Many other teams (including Regina) are doing just that. The Kittens are now 5-4 and the Herd falls to 2-6-1. Saturday afternoon's rematch goes at 2:30 and is available at CanadaWest.tv. This is the first time a Bison series in Regina will be shown on CanadaWest.tv. Oddly, it is the only series scheduled for broadcast. Saturday afternoon games are not to my liking. With Bison football also on, and driving the kids around, Saturday is going to be crazy. Anyhow, the Bisons need wins. Thus far, the CW has slit into three tiers. The A teams are Alberta and Calgary, Lethbridge can charitably be called a C team, amd the rest are B teams. The Bisons are the only B team to get a point from an A team, and UBC is the only team with a loss to the C team. And every series between B teams has been split. The Bisons (and Sask) will want to pull away from teams like Regina. I suspect it will happen. A road sweep would surely help. Last year the Bisons whipped Regina 7 times in 8 games. Still, they split one regular season series in Regina. Road sweeps are never a guarantee. The trend has continued this year. The Bisons' two pre-season wins over the Kittens were quite convincing. Chris Mappin scored twice for Lethbridge, so I guess this was The Mappin Show. (Kermit says "Yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy".) So far it has been hard to gauge UBC. They had many highly touted recruits this year. For some reason, such recruits have had little historical impact on UBC. In the pre-season UBC swept the Simon Fraser Clown (big deal) and were in turn swept in Alaska (with one good game and one whipping). OK, explainable. In the regular season they have been swept by Calgary and Alberta (like everybody else) and had their usual split with Regina. I did not get around to filing my report until now because last weekend was the end of the football regular season and I was devoting my time to the OHT27 final football poll of the season. I do not like the idea of hockey getting a bye week at this stage. However with the Bisons hosting a semi-final football game on Friday night at least the timing is good. The Bisons had a credible performance and it was nice to see them against score 3 goals per game on the weekend. With any luck, they would have come away with more than the one point. The 4th line had some ice time as well, but clearly not as much. Jesse Paradis scored twice, and linemate Paul Ciarelli rounded out the Bison scoring. Once again, long shots were a bug-a-boo. While Dubyk was generally sound in goal, those point shots cannot be finding the mesh. More galling was Calgary's 4th goal. The 2nd period was winding down and the Bisons were killing a penalty. For some bizarre reason they made a line change with less than 40 seconds left and allowed a Calgary break-away. The Bisons mounted a furious 3rd period rally, which fell short when Bedrock U put the game away with an empty-netter. Also, though the 6 goals were nice, the Bisons continue to miss the net on oodles of high quality scoring chances. Of note, the Bisons did charge hard to the net, and that is ultimately what led to their goals. I will be interested to see if the Dinos have better success in this regard in future games on CanadaWest.tv. The Dinos are now 8-0-0 (they don't seem THAT good), and the Bisons fall to 2-5-1. [CW Story (on all games)] : [U of C Story (reprint)] :. [LS Summary] : [CIS Boxscore] :. [CanadaWest.tv - webcast] Friday night's series opener was a very back-and-forth game in which nobody ever had more than a one-goal lead. This was the Bisons' (and for that matter the CW's) first overtime game of the regular season. One major observation of the Dinos: They are very bad floppers and have a very chintzy style of play. (Those things do tend to go hand-in-hand.) The Bisons were able to barge towards their goal much easier than against most opponents, and I would hope they would do more of this in the rematch. The referees did get sucked in a few times, and the Dinos capitalized with 3 PP goals in 6 attempts. They must be great fans of Greg Louganis, or at least soccer players. Here's how they lined up: Bisons: Goal: 34 Dubyk (1 Caligiuri) Defence: 5 Christensen - 2 Crowley 4 Schappert - 6 Paulsen 12 Sutherland - 24 Bobbee Forwards: 21 Dickin - 19 Duval - 27 DePape 20 Lewadniuk - 10 Rowinski - 16 Paradis 18 Kelly - 25 Ciarelli - 29 Cain 8 Coates - 15 Scott - 17 Lauder Scratches: 3 Landry D / 22 Bestland D 28 Dalebozik F / 35 Rewucki G Calgary: Goal: 1 Lazaruk (37 DeSerres) Defence: 22 Bartman - 3 Vandane 2 Gibb - 11 Dzielski 6 Dow - 27 Pritz Forwards: 9 Kambeitz - 13 Collins - 40 Stefishen 17 Nysen - 25 King - 24 Wintoneak 19 Clement - 7 Ross - 44 Moir 12 Grant - 29 Edwards - 10 Harrison Scratches: 4 Carson D / 14 Stojan D / 15 Messier F 18 Wiest F / 20 Gayle F / 21 Myers F 23 Land F / 30 Hogdebo G The Bisons opened scoring when Luke Cain scored the only goal of the 1st period. The Bisons had a slight edge in play and the goal was scored by Cain barging his way toward the goal. The Bisons started the 2nd period well, but the Dinos had their only stretch with the upper hand in the last half of the period. Two late goals (from Kambeitz and Pritz) gave them the lead. The Pritz goal was on a questionable PP (drawn via a pair of Sedin-like flops) on a point shot that Dubyk probably should have stopped. Down 2-1 entering the 3rd, the Bisons did turn the game around by controlling the vast majority of the period. Just over a minute in, Dylan Kelly converted a Paradis pass and the game was tied. The Dinos regained the lead when a Vandane point shot eluded Dubyk. (Those two point shot goals were weak, but Dubyk did have a pretty good game, overall.) The game was headed to a disappointing end when Dane Crowley came in from the point and slammed home a loose puck. As usual, the Dinos had little interest in laying the body on a man headed to the net. The overtime goal was scored on a PP rebound goal, set up by another flop. The rematch goes Saturday at 6:00 p.m. at the Wayne Fleming Arena. I do not see the game listed on CanadaWest.tv. OUT OF TOWN SCOREBOARD LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS 2 SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 5 Links: :. Like last season, Manitoba, Alberta, Sask., and Mount Royal started the season with a round-robin amongst themselves. Meanwhile Bedrock, Regina, UBC, and Lethbridge did likewise. (The UBC-Lethbridge series got shifted to the bye week so as to allow those teams to visit the Excited States.) By any measure, the Bisons are in their tough stretch. The Dinos have racked up 6 straight wins, which followed a luke-warm pre-season. The teams did face one another in Regina in the Bisons' first game back on Canadian soil following their Euro junket. That game ended in a 3-2 Dino win. As usual, the question will be: Can the Bisons score? They had a stretch where they were shutout in 4 of 5 games (including one non-conference game), and last weekend even had a 1-0 win. Meanwhile, Bedrock U boasts the top 2 scorers in the CW, newcomers Chris Collins (9-3-12) and Adam Kambeitz (3-8-11). In goal, Deven Dubyk started both games last weekend, his first two regular season starts as a Bison. The Dinos have rotated the DeSerres/Lazaruk combo so far, after Dustin Butler has used up his eligibility. The Bisons' 2-4 start might not seem so great, but they are tied for 4th and have yet to play two teams they usually sweep - Regina and Lethbridge. Expect a pair of good games! In the end the shots were 32 each and the game was very close. MRU now has splits against both Manitoba and Sask., and without a fluky type of game where a hot goaltender steals one. They did not rock the world in the pre-season, but maybe they are a playoff threat. IAE, Manitoba, Sask., and MRU are all 2-4-0 after having played identical schedules. Bison goals were scored by Jesse Paradis and Dane Crowley. Deven Dubyk once again started in goal. There was some controversy after the Bisons scored with about 3 minutes left in the game. After the goal, Aaron Lewadniuk was penalized and shortly after than Ian Duval was also penalized. This basically thwarted the comeback attempt. 20. Oct. 18: Dubyk Gets Shutout in First Start MANITOBA BISONS 1 MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS 0 Links: :. [MRU Game Story] : [U of M Schedule/Results (check for new links)] :. [CW Story (on all games)] :. [CIS Friday Roundup (not yet uploaded)] :. [LS Summary] : [CIS Boxscore (not yet posted)] For some reason, many links are not yet uploaded. Maybe they will be as you read. The best way for an offensively-challenged team to win is obvious: Get a shut-out and pray SOMEBODY on your side scores, even once. And that's what happened here. Deven Dubyk had his first start in the Bison goal and stopped 'em all. Brendan Rowinski scored in the first period. I had baseball playoffs, Jets hockey, and Bison football to follow as well. I focussed on this game for the 2nd and 3rd periods. The Bisons really controlled play in the 2nd period but, as usual, lacked the finish necessary to score a goal or two which would have put the New-Kittens-on-the-Block away. MRU had a big rally in the 3rd period, outshooting the Bisons 18-7. However, not many of those came with traffic in front of the Bison goal. This was a key win. Even though the Bisons are only 2-3-0, they are tied for 3rd. The rematch is Saturday at 2:00 local, 3:00 central, and is on CanadaWest.tv. [U of L Game Story] Just over 5 minutes into this one it was already 2-0 for the Bedrock Boys, and with the H0rny Ones' recent track record one could have feared for a slaughter. While the Dinos claimed a tidy victory, it would not be fair to categorize this as a blowout. In fact, the desperate 'Horns outshot Calgary 21-19 over the final two periods, in which the Lizards no doubt were satisfied to let the clock tick down. That's 5-0-0 on the season for the Flintstone Pets. However, they do have yet to play Alberta, Sask., and Manitoba. Saturday's rematch goes at 6:00 local/7:00 central and is scheduled for broadcast at CanadaWest.tv. ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 3 SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 2 Links: :. [LS Summary] : [CIS Boxscore] :. They and the Bisons are both 1-3, after two games against each of Alberta and Sask. The underlying stories on this series are shutouts and streaks. The Bisons have been shutout in 3 of 4 regular season games so far. They were also shutout in a non-conference game in that time frame, to make it 4 out of 5. This raises the question: Who could score? Ian Duval bounced back from the injured list to record a hat-trick. Other lines have produced chances. Now we have to see who has that midas touch around the net. One streak the Bisons have is a winning streak over the NKOTB. [LS Summary] : [CIS Boxscore] While it is true that the Bisons were shut-out for the 4th time in 5 games, this was quite unlike the others. For one thing, it followed a win. For another, for almost half the game this was a 0-0 tie in which the Bisons looked to have a great chabnce to achieve a sweep. The one great thing about the night was that the Banjo-Mutts wore a new light green jersey instead of those ugly black blobs they usually wear. (With dark green numbers, those are the only uniforms around worse than the Bison browns for being able to read the players' numbers.) Also, the Bisons did not dress Brock Sutherland, leaving them one bull short of a full herd. For that matter, the Mutts were one puppy short of a litter both nights, also. This mini-round-robin ends next weekend with the Mutts hosting the Monkeys and the Bisons off to Calgary to face MRU. The Bisons' next games at the Wayne Fleming Arena will be against the Dinos on October 25-26. So by the end of the first month they will have played their home series against their three top rivals. [U of R Game Story] The Banjo-Cats completed a much-needed home ice sweep of the H0rny Ones, who at least showed some improvement. Actually, when I heard the score was 9-to-5 I started thinking about Dolly Parton. Anyhow, a six goal 2nd period outburst burried the 'Birds. They had built a 2-0 lead after the 1st. Then after pulling goaltender Matt Hewitt they rallied to make it 6-4 early in the 3rd. Crazy game. The Dinos are now 4-0-0, and UBC is 0-2-0. 23. Oct. 11: Duval Returns with a Hat-Trick SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 1 MANITOBA BISONS 4 Links: :. [U of M Story] : [U of M Boxscore] :. [CW Story (on all games)] :. [LS Summary] : [CIS Boxscore] :. [CanadaWest.tv - webcast] The Bisons needed a shot in the arm after last weekend's power outage. And they got it from the return of Ian Duval. He was injured 3 weeks ago against the Banjo-Cats, and returned to score a hat-trick and pace the Herd to a win over the Banjo-Mutts. Here's how they lined up: Bisons: Goal: 1 Caligiuri (34 Dubyk) Defence: 2 Crowley - 3 Landry 5 Christensen - 4 Schappert 12 Sutherland - 24 Bobbee Forwards: 16 Paradis - 25 Ciarelli - 6 Paulsen 21 Dickin - 19 Duval - 27 DePape 20 Lewadniuk - 10 Rowinski - 29 Cain 18 Kelly - 15 Scott - 17 Lauder Scratches: 8 Coates F / 22 Bestland D 28 Dalebozik F / 35 Rewucki G Saskatchewan: Goal: 31 Holfield (30 Voth) Defence: 2 McFaull - 13 Stebner 26 K Aschim - 27 Ward 3 Cox - 4 Delahey Forwards: 19 Hulak - 17 Dulle - 16 Ross 15 Niegum - 24 Smuk - 20 S Aschim 21 Bailey - 10 Bosch 9 Spafford - 28 Lawrence - 7 Roach Scratches: 6 Hobbs D / 8 Inglis F / 18 Thiessen D 22 Suer D / 25 McDonald F / 32 Schmidt G The Bisons made their imprint on the game early and dominated the 1st period. However, it was still a 0-0 tie at the intermission. The Mutts opened scoring in the 2nd period. A funny bounce off the glass and the Ross-Hulak-Dulle combo cashed in on the opportunity. The Bisons tied it when Duval was set up on a short breakaway after a turnover. He had Ryan Holfield going one way while his jock strap went the other, and it was 1-1. Travis Bobbee put the Bisons in front to stay when he pinched in and scored on a PP. The Mutts recovered adequately as they pressed to tie the game, and in the 3rd period the Bisons crawled into a bit of a shell. But Duval made a nice defensive poke-check, which resulted in a 3-on-1 breakout. He faked a pass then scored. The goal seemed to deflate the Banjo-Mutts, allowing the Bisons to coast. Duval's 3rd goal was into an empty net. Of note, Joe Caligiuri had his best game of the year. The rematch goes Saturday at 6:00 p.m. at the Wayne Fleming Arena, and is available on CanadaWest.tv. [CIS Top Ten Story] : [reposted at CW Story] :. [Every Link Re: CIS Hockey] The Banjo-Mutts are coming for a turkey dinner. Which will make quite a change from their traditional Thanksgiving fare, i.e. possum shanks and crawdads, consumed with banjo music playing in the background. Of course, what we in the civilized world consider modern upgrades, the Mangy Ones often observe with bewilderment. In past years their players have been caught drinking out of the toilets. (Just imagine if your puppy had arms!) Seldom did they shower, and on the rare occasion when one of them would accidentally wander in and get wet, he would try to shake himself dry and make the walls an absolute mess. I hear they do appreciate stpre-bought toilet paper. Last weekend, the Bisons were blanked 3 games in a row. Meanwhile, the Mutts were held to 2 points at Mount Royal. Both sides had a reasonable but not awe-inspiring pre-season, and are quite likely disappointed with last weekend. Departed from last years Pack of Hounds are: Kyle Bortis (leading scorer), Jimmy Bubnick (4th), Craig McCallum (6th), Brandon Herrod (7th), Chris Durand (9th), Michael Kaye (12th), Ryan Funk (15th), Jordan Peddie (18th), and goaltender David Reekie. So both sides have had significant turnover at the top of their depth charts. Their LeagueStat roster lists 12 forwards and 11 defencemen. Sometimes they mix guys up. If you check the roster link, you will see that they have 4 new forwards, 4 new defencemen, and one goaltender. In my view, they have not upgraded (on paper). Clearly, both sides have had some significant changes. Somewhat surprising in Sask's case, since they are hosting the U-Cup tournament and get an automatic berth. That usually is a sign to hang on to players. This week's big question for the Bisons has to be: Will somebody score? Despite the loss of a number of top forwards, the Bisons scored 34 goals in their first 10 exhibition games, a pretty good output. However, Bedrock U have chased them down both times, then beat them in the playoffs. UBC have recruited well (on paper) but have also lost some significant reliable players, including their goaltender. UBC did not face any CIS opposition in the pre-season so are hard to gauge. The Dinos ended the pre-season with 2 wins over the Monkeys. This series will draw some interest around the league.
