Preview: Sept 20-21: REGINA at MANITOBA REGINA COUGARS (0-0-0, 0-2-0, OHT35 n/a) MANITOBA BISONS (0-0-0, 0-2-0, OHT35 n/a) Sept 20 7:00 CDT at Wayne Fleming Arena, Winnipeg Sept 21 1:30 CDT at Wayne Fleming Arena, Winnipeg Live Links: ➤ Video: [CanadaWest.tv] (regular season only) ➤ Audio: [UMFM 101.5] (regular season only) ➤ Friday: [Live Stats] ∞ [Hockey Tech] ➤ Saturday: [Live Stats] ∞ [Hockey Tech] Manitoba Links: ➤ GoBisons: [Men's Hockey Site] ➤ Social: [Twitter] ∞ [Facebook] ➤ CW: [Stats] ∞ [Schedule/Results/Links] ➤ LeagueStat: [Stats] ∞ [Schedule/Results/Links] Regina Links: ➤ Team: [Team Site] ➤ Social: [Twitter] ∞ [Facebook] ➤ CW: [Stats] ∞ [Schedule/Results/Links] ➤ LeagueStat: [Stats] ∞ [Schedule/Results/Links] Other Links: ➤ USports: [Schedule/Links] ∞ [Standings] ➤ CW: [Home Page] ∞ [Schedule] The first actual hockey game of the season for me comes on Friday night at the U of M. Not many CW pre-season games utilize the LeagueStat reporting, but both of this weekend's games are listed. There is no TV or radio coverage of the series. However, all men's home games are going to be heard on UMFM 101.5 and at their on-line link provided. The Bisons have a decided edge over Regina in recent years. Over the last 5 years they are 12-3-1. However, last year it was a home sweep at the hands of the Banjocats that set the Bison season sideways. They started with a tour of the British Isles. They were short-staffed for that one but still went 1-3-0 (with two one-goal losses). When they came back, they beat SAIT, lost to Sask, and beat Regina. So fair enough. Then they split on the road against the Dinos, went down south where they lost twice (but once in overtime against UND), then split a home series against the Evil Monkeys. Pretty fair start. But those two losses to Regina started an 11-game losing streak. Ugh. Of note, the rosters are being updated at 6 of the 8 CW team sites. Lethbridge and UBC are the only holdouts. The Bisons have added two returning defencemen who did not dress for the Brown/Gold game. Those are Mitchell Dyck and Carter Doerksen. They have 28 players, 16 forwards, 9 defencemen, and 3 goaltenders. (I don't like it when a team only has 7 defencemen.) Here's the Bison roster (number/name/year/former team): Goaltenders: 1 Jeremy Link – 1 – Blues (MJHL) 30 Riley Lamb - 1 – Swift Current (WHL) 35 Tyler Brown – 1 – Saskatoon (WHL) Defencemen: 2 Adam Henry – 5 – Portland (WHL) 3 Sean Christensen – 5 – St. Boniface (MMJHL) 4 Matthew Stanley – 1 – Swift Current (WHL) Jacksonville (ECHL) 5 Liam Schioler – 1 – Regina (WHL) 6 Mitchell Dyck – 2 – Winkler (MJHL) 11 Ryan Carlson – 2 – UWS (NCAA)/ Steinbach (MJHL) 25 Lucas Skrumeda – 3 – Everett (WHL) 27 Carter Doerksen – 2 – Nipawin (SJHL) 28 Brady Pouteau - 1 – Regina (WHL) Forwards: 8 Connor Barley – 1 – Selkirk (MJHL) 9 Dylan Thiessen – 1 – Mercyhurst (NCAA) 10 Devon Skoleski – 2 – Blues (MJHL) 12 Keaton Jameson – 2 – Swan Valley (MJHL) 13 Nicholas Labossiere – 1 – Selkirk/Steinbach (MJHL) St. Vital (MMJHL) 14 Geordie Keane – 2 – Blues (MJHL) 15 Ben Dalke – 1 – Virden (WHL) 16 Josh Tripp – 1 – Swan Valley (MJHL) 17 Colton Veloso – 2 – Jacksonville (ECHL) 18 Bradley Goethals – 1 – Swan Valley (MJHL)/Saskatoon (WHL) 19 Nathan Halvorsen – 1 – Selkirk (MJHL) 20 Tony Apetagon – 1 – Blues/OCN (MJHL) 21 Brian Harris – 1 – Swan Valley (MJHL)/Edmonton (WHL) 22 Jeremey Leipsic – 2 – Portage (MJHL) 26 Matthew LeBlanc – 2 – Blues (MJHL) 29 Jonah Wasylak – 5 – Steinbach (MJHL) Notes: Chase Brakel – He was an announced recruit in June but is not on the roster. Last year Zborosky had 5 goals and 2 assists in 4 games against the Bisons. 4. Sept 14: Bisons Swept MANITOBA BISONS 1 CALGARY DINOSAURS 7 Links: UofC: S&R UofC: Twitter UofM: S&R Podcast: This Week in Bison Sports There are no details on this game anywhere, but it is hard to imagine that this was anything other than a whuppin'. Calgary is now 5-0-0 and Manitoba is 0-2-0. Next weekend the Bisons host Regina, so I'll see what the new line-up looks like for real. I have added a link to UMFM's podcast. The season debut had an interview with new goaltender Tyler Brown. OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 4 SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 0 Links: UofS: S&R UofA: Linescore* UofA: Twitter The U of A Twitter was updating scores. Shots were 31-20 in favour of the Monkeys. Alberta is now 4-0-0 and Sask is 1-1-0. Looking at the five scores from the weekend in Saskatown, it would seem that the Dinos and Monkeys are a cut above the Bisons and Banjolanders. Although, they have also played the most pre-season games and should be closer to their true form. We'll see. Alberta and Calgary play head-to-head next week to wrap up the pre-season. Oddly, Sask has no more games until the regular season starts. The Bisons are 7-8-1 against the Monkeys over the last 4 years, which is probably as good as anybody has done. The Apes are now 3-0-0 and this was the Bisons' first game. 8. Sept 11: News Round-up I was looking around to see if 2019-20 rosters were popping up, and one was (from the Town of Bedrock). Also, some news was posted by Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The retirement of Coleen Dufresne has prompted a Wall of Recognition to be installed. No word on who will be recognized in it. Link: UofM: Best of the Bisons captured in new Wall of Recognition The Dinosaurs are the first team in the CW to update their "roster" link with their 2019-20 line-up. Here's the breakdown: New recruits: 31 Brodan Salmond - G - Moose Jaw (WHL) 34 Adam Marcoux - G - Trail (BCHL) 41 Sahvan Khaira - D - Everett (WHL) 44 Dallas Hines - D - Vancouver (WHL) 11 Kaden Elder - F - Calgary (WHL) 39 Lane Zablocki - F - Vernon (BCHL) 43 Jordan Xavier - F - Alaska-Anchorage (NCAA) Returnees: 1 Matt Greenfield G 2 Jake Kearley D - UNLV (ACHA) 3 Ryan Gagnon D 5 Jordan Henderson D 7 TJ Brown D - Quinnipiac (NCAA) 9 Graham Black F 10 Robbie Fisher F - Laurier (OUA) 15 Tim Vanstone F 16 Matt Alfaro F 17 Coda Gordon F 21 Logan Fisher F 22 Mitch Cook F 23 Ryan Graham F 24 Luke Harrison F 26 Bradley Schoonbaert F 27 Chris Rauckman F - UPEI (AUS) 28 Josh Uhrich F 29 James Shearer D 30 Tyler Gutenberg G 42 Dane Gibson F - Maine (NCAA) Departures: 4 Drew Weich D 11 Cal Babych F 12 Cain Franson F 18 Regan Nagy F 19 Riley Sheen F 33 Jared Hauf D 33 Jordan Papirny G 44 Dylan Busenius D One thing that jumped out on the Dinos' roster page was the number of transfers they have been accumulating. The five returnees and one newcomer have their former school noted on the roster above. This is a pretty good recruiting class, however the Dinos are losing a lot of their veteran core. I would expect them to be similar in calibre to what they have been in recent seasons. Link: UofC: Roster Page The Mutts have posted a story on their men's and women's tournaments. Not much new information (unless you are going there and want tickets) but it does seem that they are promoting the events. It also seems that this will be the one and only weekend of exhibition games for them. Link: UofS: Huskie hockey to host pair of exhibition tournaments
  9. Late Results OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD U.B.C. THUNDERBIRDS 2 ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 6 Links: Schedule/Results: UBC : UofA Linescore Twitter: UBC : Alberta The UBC schedule/results page added the score and Alberta has now posted a linescore. Their goals were scored by Noah Philp, Tyler Soy, Ryan Jevne, Steven Owre, Cole Sanford, and Trevor Cox. Neither Twitter feed has anything else. So the T-irds are now 0-3-1 and the Evil Monkeys 2-0-0 on the season.
  10. Sept 7: Loads of New Recruits at Bison Intersquad Game BROWN 3 WHITE 1 The Bisons haven't done this in a while. For me, it was a chance to see the line-up and the renovations underway at the Wayne Fleming Arena. The new balcony is pretty much done. It is still partitioned off and wet paint signs are around. Here's the line-up synopsis (jersey number indicated and B for Brown and G for Gold): Unannounced Recruits 1B Jeremy Link G 6B Dylan Thiessen F 15B Ben Dalke F 5W Liam Schioler D 8W Connor Barley F 13W Nico Labossiere F 19W Nate Halvorsen F 34W Travis Ridgen G Announced Recruits 5B Matthew Stanley D 18B Brady Goethals F 21W Brian Harris F 23W Tony Apetagon F 27W Brady Pouteau D 30W Riley Lamb G Announced Recruit/Not Dressed -- Joshua Tripp Returnees Dressed 2B Adam Henry D 3B Sean Christensen D 11B Ryan Carlson D 12B Keaton Jameson F 24B Jeremey Leipsic F 35B Tyler Brown G 10W Devon Skoleski F 17W Colton Veloso F 24W Matt LeBlanc F 25W Lukas Skrumeda D 29W Jonah Wasylak F Comeback 16B Geordie Keane F Guest Players 20B Zach Franko F 21B Liam Bilton F 4W Bryce Litke D Announced Departures 4 Kamerin Nault F 8 Liam Bilton F 9 Zach Franko F 28 Byron Spriggs G 35 Brett Stovin F Announced Graduates 1 Justin Paulic G 12 Nick Zajac F 21 Brett Brooks F 34 Dasan Sydora G Departed or Not Dressed 5 Brandon Paradoski D 11 Mitchell Dyck D 14 Thomas Freeman F 16 Dawson Martin F 18 Garrett Armour F 23 Mackenzie Dwyer D 24 Thomas Lenchyshyn D The game was just two periods, and each goaltender got a period. No goals were scored on Jeremy Link, Tyler Brown and Riley Lamb each surrendered one, and Travis Ridgen gave up two. There was no PA for goals, and a couple were hard for me to tell from the other end of the ice, but I believe that the Brown goals were by Henry, Leipsic, and Christensen while Labossiere scored for the White. Each side had two goaltenders and four defencemen. The Brown had 8 forwards, and White had 9. Here's the background on the EIGHT unannounced recuits who suited up in this one: Jeremy Link - G – Winnipeg Blues (MJHL) Link is a Winnipeg native coming off four MJHL seasons, split between the Neepawa Natives and Winnipeg Blues. His stats line was excellent last year (26-16-0, 2.48 GAA, .931 S%). He led the league in save percentage. Links: ➤ Career Stats: ELite Prospects : MJHL : Fandom ➤ Twitter videos: Jan 15th : Feb 1st : Feb 4th A picture with stats! Dylan Thiessen - C/LW – Mercyhurst Lakers (NCAA) Although transferring from Mercyhurst, Thiessen is another Winnipeg boy. He played four seasons with the Virden Oil Capitals, and had 64 goals, 93 assists for 157 points in 216 games. He only played four games for Mercyhurst last year. Many Bison recruits had better numbers, but Thiessen has drawn a lot of accolades in his own right. He wore the “C” in Virden and last year he had a perfect 4.0 GPA to be AHA Student Athlete-of-the-Year. He only played 5 games but I am sure with that GPA he'll figure out how to get more ice time this year. The linked stories point out things like his coach's favourable views of the team captain, getting a scholarship to the same NCAA school as his sister, and his reflections on the impact of the Humboldt crash. He had committed to Queen's last February but has clearly come to his senses. Apparently, he was going to enrol in commerce. Just so happens that Manitoba's commerce faculty is second to none! Combined with the unexpected return of 5th year Sean Christensen, the Herd now has 7 quality veterans or WHL rookies on the blueline. He won't be expected to generate offence, but should help alleviate last year's havoc in front of the net. Also, the Pats used him up front when the injury bug hit the forward ranks last year. Those didn't pan out so he spent all of last season with Selkirk. He finished 8th in MJHL scoring (31-26-57), and was 10th in 2017-18 with better numbers (35-32-67). He started with Winkler, then went to Selkirk, stopped off with St. Vital (MMJHL), and then finished last year with Steinbach. His rights had been dealt to Waywayseecappo but I guess he chose to play in the MMJHL instead over the pre-Christmas-New Year's period. In any event, he played just 33 games combined. His point totals were not too bad (6-22-28). In 2017-18 he played the full season with Selkirk and in 60 games was 22-42-64, good for 14th in the league. He's a small forward at 5'9”, and the Bisons have a few of those now. He was 4th in MJHL scoring, behind fellow recruits Josh Tripp, Bradly Goethals, and Tony Apetagon. He is a Winnipeg native who played Junior B in the KJHL with Lundar and Arborg before heading out to Vancouver Island University last year. He only played one game last year and gave up 8 goals. I suspect he is a name they can call upon in the event of injury to one of the other three goaltenders. He wrote a story about himself in The Hockey News. The link is behind a pay wall. His official resume misses several teams from whom he was cut. So if he's cut by the Bisons, I think he'll take it in stride. Already this year he has a tryout with the Birmingham Bulls of the SPHL. They lack experience and reliable forwards. They have three 5th years players, no 4th year players, and two 3rd year defencemen. The only veteran forward is Jonah Wasylak. Therefore, the question is whether the team can score enough goals. Returning second year forwards with potential are Veloso, Jameson, Leipsic, and Skoleski. From the MJHL they have the top four scorers, and 7 of the top 14. If enough young forwards can adapt to university hockey, they could be a difficult playoff opponent. OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD U.B.C. Highlights are: - Brendan Burke got the win, with 22 saves on 24 shots - Rylan Toth got the loss, with 23 saves on 26 shots - The game was tied 1-1 after one, and 2-2 after two. - Ryan Rehill scored the game winner in just over a minute of OT. - UBC dressed just 19 players. 14. Sept 1: Another 0-3 Day OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD With the Bisons not in action, we once again continue with a limited schedule opening weekend. It's looking like the OUA is in-between the level of the DEL2 and Oberliga and UBC is a touch beneath the Badger Bobs. WISCONSIN BADGERS 7 U.B.C. THUNDERBIRDS 5 Links: LeagueStat: [Summary] : [UBC Stats Page] Stories: [UBC] : [UofW (with video)] This series ended in wild fashion. Wisconsin built a 5-0 lead early in the 2nd period, before UBC stormed back to make it 5-4 in the 3rd period. The last goal was an empty-netter.Matt Revel and newcomer Jeff Kryski each scored twice for the T-irds. Habs' draft Cole Caulfield had a hatrick for the Badger Bobs. UBC starting goaltender (wrongly listed as Wisconsin's Daniel Lebedeff) allowed four goals on 15 1st period shots. UBC then put in a new goaltender (wrongly listed as Wisconsin's Jack Berry) who stopped 16 of 18 shots. Jack Berry started for Wisconsin and stopped all 5 shots he faced in the 1st period. Johan Blomquist then finished, and stopped 15 of 20 shots. So who played goal for UBC? Likely Ben Maquignaz, who was also on the line-up listings, and another mystery goaltender. 15. Aug 30: USports Teams Go 0-3 OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD The Bisons have yet to start the season, and won't for two weeks, but we do have a fairly busy Friday night out-of-town scoreboard from the night that the CW football season kicked off (with the Bisons soundly thrashing the Banjo Mutts). WISCONSIN BADGERS 3 U.B.C. THUNDERBIRDS 0 Links: LeagueStat: [Summary] : [UBC Stats Page] Stories: [UBC] : [UofW (with video)] This was a solid win for the Badger Bobs, outscoring the T-irds 1-0 in each period. Final shots were 38-26 in favour of Wisconsin. There were a total of 64 penalty minutes dealt (34 to Wisconsin). Returning goaltender Rylan Toth took the loss for UBC. Wisconsin had 27 names on the line-up sheet posted at LeagueStat. Since neither UBC nor any other CW team has a 2019-20 roster posted, the LeagueStat summary is a guideline (* indicates a rookie): Defencemen 6 Shaun Dosanjh 13 Kyle Becker 26 Joe Carvalho 29 Jerret Smith 40 Jonathan Smart * 43 Ryan Pouliot * Forwards 9 Dryden Michaud * 10 Matt Revel 14 Jake Kryski * 16 Murphy Stratton * 17 Austin Vetterl 19 Tyler Sandhu 20 Austin Glover 21 Quentin Greenwood 22 Quinn Benjafield * 37 Brett Clayton * 42 Carter Popoff 44 Maxwell James Goalies 34 Rylan Toth 39 Ben Maquignaz Announced Recruits Not Dressed Jarret Tyszka (D) James Orban (F) Announced Departures 8 Riley Guenther 15 Adam Rossignol 22 Chase Clayton 23 Raymond Grewal 33 Michael Stenerson Departed or Not Dressed 2 Devin Fafard 7 Tanner Faith 11 Steven Hodges 25 Colton Kehler 27 Josh Connolly 47 Patrick Dea The only rookie dressed but not previously announced was Murphy Stratton, a California lad listed as committed to UND for 2020-21. 17. Aug 24: Announcements Around the CW There have been no announcements of new recruits for the Bisons since a flurry of activity in the spring. There has been a follow-up story on Brett Stovin's journey to Scotland. He was also contacted by teams in Italy, Poland, France, and elsewhere in the U.K. Links: ➤ UofM: Versatile Stovin ready to begin pro hockey career in Scotland The Evil Monkeys have added a zoo-full of banana-eating, armpit-scratching, vine-swinging recruits from the WHL. With 14 new players, there must be a load of departures. There just won't be enough bananas to go around. Forwards: Chad Butcher - Medicine Hat (WHL-2017), Wichita/Allen (ECHL) Matt Fonteyne - Everett (WHL-2018), San Jose (AHL) Ryan Jevne - Medicine Hat (WHL) Josh Paterson - Saskatoon/Portland (WHL) Noah Philp - Seattle (WHL) Luc Smith - Kamloops/Spokane (WHL) Nolan Volcan - Seattle (WHL) Defense: Braydyn Chizen - Kelowna/Brandon (WHL) Dawson Davidson - Saskatoon (WHL) Jared Freadrich - Portland (WHL) Dalton Hamaliuk - Moose Jaw (WHL) Joel Lakusta _ Prince George (WHL) Goaltenders: Matt Berlin - Kootenay (WHL-2018), Sherwood (AJHL) Griffen Outhouse - Victoria (WHL) This is a record large recruit class for the Apes. The previous high was 12. The linked story has career stats for each player. There were two players from British California and one from Sask, the rest being Alberta boys. So no recruits left for Calgary, MRU, and Lethbridge I guess. Links: ➤ UofA: Bears Hockey announces record-breaking recruit class Still nothing from Banjoland about recruits, but they do have a story on Dave Hardy being appointed the chief athletics officer (CAO). Whoop-dee-doo! Links: ➤ UofS: Huskie Athletics announce chief athletics officer The T-irds' 8 recruits would normally be quite an announcement. Deggendorfer SC (aka "The Fire") finished 14th and last. So this year they are relegated to the Oberliga, the 3rd tier league. Meanwhile, Dresdner Eislöwen (Ice Lions) finished 9th of 14 and lost in the semi-finals. They have Nick Huard from the Guelph Gryphons in their line-up. Eispiraten Crimmitschau (Ice Pirates) finished 10th and were knocked out in the quarter-finals. They have no USports grads. Unlike their opponents, the Gee-Gees were better in the regular season (22-2-4) than in the playoffs (3-2). It was their 3rd season back and they shocked USports fans by finishing 1st in the OUA East, 7 points ahead of Carleton in their division and 5 points ahead of Ryerson (western pennant winner) in the conference. 18. Aug 10: Waterloo Warriors Trip to the Alps This year the Bisons are not crossing the Atlantic to start the season. But the Waterloo Warriors are making a trek. I don't remember them doing so before. The Warriors have qualified for the University Cup four times: 1974 (where the won gold), 1991, 1996, and 2013. They have finished 10th (and last) in the OUA in each of the last two seasons. However, their 25 points in 28 games was not such a bad record. The OUA West is tightly packed, so they were just 6 points removed from 3rd place. They will play teams from Italy, Germany, and Switzerland, all in the German-speaking Alps extended region. On August 30th they face Rittner Buam. The Bisons have played them on two prior trips when they were known as Ritten (or Renon) Sport. (Ritten is the city name in German, Renon is the city name in Italian.) They are now in the Alps Hockey League, which has Austria's 2nd Tier teams and Slovenia's and Italy's top tier teams. Last season they were 5th out of 17 teams. They also won the Italian title. This year's roster has a UNB grad (Randy Gazzola) and a Dalhousie grad (Dan Tudin). Links: > Team Website > Sofascore Scoreboard > YouTube Channel > Elite Prospects - Randy Gazzola > Elite Prospects - Dan Tudin > Elite Prospects - Alps Hockey League On September 1st they will face EHC Freiburg from the DEL2 (German 2nd Tier). Freiburg finished 13th out of 14 teams last year. They are unofficially called the "Wolves". Many of the Bisons' opponents from this league have moved either up or down a league in the intervening years. I know that the leading teams from this league are tough opponents for USports teams. Keeping the AUS theme going, former X-Man Nick Pageau plays for the Wolves. Links: > Team Website > Elite Prospects - DEL2 > Elite Prospects - Nick Pageau The tour ends on September 2nd with a 3rd game in 4 days against the EVZ Academy from Zug, Switzerland. They play in the Swiss 2nd Tier, called "NLB". They placed 8th out of 11 teams a year ago. The team is very young, with just only one player outside the 18-21 age group. Waterloo should fall mostly within the 20-23 age group. Links: > Team Website > Elite Prospects - NLB > Roster at Swiss Hockey News
  19. Aug 4: Recruitment & Scheduling Recap Around the CW news has been sparse. There is usually a team or two to start around Labour Day which exhibitions, with a mass join-in to follow. 21. July 15: More Renos I dropped in on the Wayne Fleming Arena on Sunday afternoon during public skating and took some pictures. The centre ice logo is added. The new boards are not yet installed in front of the player benches. The new scoreboard will have highlights to see! From the concourse it is basically at eye height. This shows the new boards and logo. The glass was also fogged up due to the high humidity. This is the major aspect of the renos in progress. This is a glimpse of the new row of seats being added on the east side of the building, above the player benches and below the press box. This picture shows the relative position of the scoreboard. This one is a different angle of the previous picture. It really shows the new "hallway" being built behind the big white curtain. Links: ➤ UofM: Video Tweet The T-irds have two new stories. One is about veteran Adam Rossignol turning pro in Europe, and the other is about the previously announced exhibition games against the Wisconsin Badger-Bobs. 22. July 6: News from Manitoba, Alberta, and UBC Another photo of the renovations underway at the Wayne Fleming Arena has been tweeted by the Winnipeg Ice. The part behind the curtain is the part that will make the biggest difference. But I really like the new scoreboard. Can't wait to see it when it's done. However, they have added a pair of home games on August 30th and September 1st against the Wisconsin Badgers. What makes these games unusual is that they are being played in British California, not the Excited States, and that they are being played more than a month before NCAA teams are "allowed" to play. In the past, many NCAA basketball teams have come north to play exhibition games. Now, hockey is getting into the act. 23. July 3: ACAC Announces More Games The ACAC conference schedule is thus far the best at adding pre-season games. I include their whole pre-season plus the individual schedules for the teams to have thus far posted theirs. Since last time, the games of note are regarding Portage College's trip to Castlegar, where they will face Selkirk College and Holy Trinity. Neither the BCIHL nor any individual teams have a 2019-20 schedule up. However The Clown have announced their two games in the 3rd annual Captain's Cup series against UBC and TWU. 25. June 25: Catch-Up Time The conference schedule has been out for two weeks. However, the CW site's schedule link still takes us to 2018-19. Regina has a full exhibition schedule posted, but nobody else does. Only Manitoba has posted any exhibition games, namely their home double-header against Regina on September 20-21. I popped in at the Wayne Fleming Arena last weekend. The seating area is locked as a "hard hat" area. However, the window on the door by the visiting team's corner entrance was not covered and I caught a mediocre glimpse inside. The wall behind the team benches was covered, there appeared to be new boards with new ads installed, and the sign said public skating was opening in July. My inference is that this is where the renos to the change rooms, press box, lounge, etc. will take place. I was unable to get a glimpse of the scoreboard. It looks pretty big when it's on the ground. The first photo was posted on June 14th and the second on June 20th. Last year there were reams of stories about players getting pro contracts, including several Bisons. The news has been slower this year. But at least Riley Guenther got a story from his alma matter, the University of British California. He's being joined by another former T-ird, Neil Manning. Both are defencemen. Manning's last season at UBC was 2015-16. He has since played in Europe, the AHL, and the ECHL.
