Not many CW pre-season games utilize the LeagueStat reporting, but both of this weekend's games are listed. There is no TV or radio coverage of the series. However, all men's home games are going to be heard on UMFM 101.5 and at their on-line link provided. The Bisons have a decided edge over Regina in recent years. Over the last 5 years they are 12-3-1. However, last year it was a home sweep at the hands of the Banjocats that set the Bison season sideways. They started with a tour of the British Isles. They were short-staffed for that one but still went 1-3-0 (with two one-goal losses). When they came back, they beat SAIT, lost to Sask, and beat Regina. So fair enough. Then they split on the road against the Dinos, went down south where they lost twice (but once in overtime against UND), then split a home series against the Evil Monkeys. Pretty fair start. But those two losses to Regina started an 11-game losing streak. Ugh. Of note, the rosters are being updated at 6 of the 8 CW team sites. Lethbridge and UBC are the only holdouts. The Bisons have added two returning defencemen who did not dress for the Brown/Gold game. Those are Mitchell Dyck and Carter Doerksen. They have 28 players, 16 forwards, 9 defencemen, and 3 goaltenders. (I don't like it when a team only has 7 defencemen.) Calgary is now 5-0-0 and Manitoba is 0-2-0. Next weekend the Bisons host Regina, so I'll see what the new line-up looks like for real. I have added a link to UMFM's podcast. The season debut had an interview with new goaltender Tyler Brown. Alberta is now 4-0-0 and Sask is 1-1-0. Looking at the five scores from the weekend in Saskatown, it would seem that the Dinos and Monkeys are a cut above the Bisons and Banjolanders. Although, they have also played the most pre-season games and should be closer to their true form. We'll see. Alberta and Calgary play head-to-head next week to wrap up the pre-season. Oddly, Sask has no more games until the regular season starts. LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS 2 RED DEER COLLEGE KINGS 3 (in overtime) Links: RDC: S&R RDC: Twitter UofL: S&R UofL: Twitter Dubbed as the "Babcock Bowl" (Mike Babcock coached both sides at one time), the Kings have scored a major win for the ACAC by defeating the Hörny Ønes. I believe this to be their first win over a CW team. The period leads were 1-0 and 2-1 and the Kings held the shots lead, 32-20. The Kings are now 1-2-0 and this was the first game for Lethbridge. Sept 13: Herd Lose Opener in Saskatown This is the pre-season's real kick-off weekend, with most teams seeing some action. The feature event is the Saskatown tournament. The Bisons are 7-8-1 against the Monkeys over the last 4 years, which is probably as good as anybody has done. The Apes are now 3-0-0 and this was the Bisons' first game. The retirement of Coleen Dufresne has prompted a Wall of Recognition to be installed. No word on who will be recognized in it. The five returnees and one newcomer have their former school noted on the roster above. This is a pretty good recruiting class, however the Dinos are losing a lot of their veteran core. Each side had two goaltenders and four defencemen. The Brown had 8 forwards, and White had 9. Many Bison recruits had better numbers, but Thiessen has drawn a lot of accolades in his own right. He wore the “C” in Virden and last year he had a perfect 4.0 GPA to be AHA Student Athlete-of-the-Year. He only played 5 games but I am sure with that GPA he'll figure out how to get more ice time this year. His point totals were not too bad (6-22-28). In 2017-18 he played the full season with Selkirk and in 60 games was 22-42-64, good for 14th in the league. He's a small forward at 5'9”, and the Bisons have a few of those now. Aug 10: Waterloo Warriors Trip to the Alps This year the Bisons are not crossing the Atlantic to start the season. But the Waterloo Warriors are making a trek. I don't remember them doing so before. The Warriors have qualified for the University Cup four times: 1974 (where the won gold), 1991, 1996, and 2013. They have finished 10th (and last) in the OUA in each of the last two seasons. However, their 25 points in 28 games was not such a bad record. The OUA West is tightly packed, so they were just 6 points removed from 3rd place. They will play teams from Italy, Germany, and Switzerland, all in the German-speaking Alps extended region. On August 30th they face Rittner Buam. The Bisons have played them on two prior trips when they were known as Ritten (or Renon) Sport. (Ritten is the city name in German, Renon is the city name in Italian.) They are now in the Alps Hockey League, which has Austria's 2nd Tier teams and Slovenia's and Italy's top tier teams. Last season they were 5th out of 17 teams. They also won the Italian title. This year's roster has a UNB grad (Randy Gazzola) and a Dalhousie grad (Dan Tudin). July 15: More Renos I dropped in on the Wayne Fleming Arena on Sunday afternoon during public skating and took some pictures. The centre ice logo is added. The new boards are not yet installed in front of the player benches. The new scoreboard will have highlights to see! From the concourse it is basically at eye height. This shows the new boards and logo. The glass was also fogged up due to the high humidity. This is the major aspect of the renos in progress. This is a glimpse of the new row of seats being added on the east side of the building, above the player benches and below the press box. This picture shows the relative position of the scoreboard. July 3: ACAC Announces More Games The ACAC conference schedule is thus far the best at adding pre-season games. June 25: Catch-Up Time The conference schedule has been out for two weeks. However, the CW site's schedule link still takes us to 2018-19. Regina has a full exhibition schedule posted, but nobody else does. Only Manitoba has posted any exhibition games, namely their home double-header against Regina on September 20-21. I popped in at the Wayne Fleming Arena last weekend. The seating area is locked as a "hard hat" area. However, the window on the door by the visiting team's corner entrance was not covered and I caught a mediocre glimpse inside. The wall behind the team benches was covered, there appeared to be new boards with new ads installed, and the sign said public skating was opening in July. My inference is that this is where the renos to the change rooms, press box, lounge, etc. will take place. I was unable to get a glimpse of the scoreboard. It looks pretty big when it's on the ground. The first photo was posted on June 14th and the second on June 20th. Last year there were reams of stories about players getting pro contracts, including several Bisons. The news has been slower this year. But at least Riley Guenther got a story from his alma matter, the University of British California. He's being joined by another former T-ird, Neil Manning. Both are defencemen. Manning's last season at UBC was 2015-16. He has since played in Europe, the AHL, and the ECHL.
