February 3, 2024: BISONS PULL OFF A MIRACLE COMEBACK
MANITOBA BISONS 4

➤ MacU: Griffins lose late lead, fall in a shootout to Manitoba, but still finish with program-best record (with boxscore and video)
Quick Summary
MacU: C. Chorney (07:05 2nd), B. Boyle (06:02 3rd), K. Gable (13:22 3rd)
Man: D. Thiessen (00:46 3rd), R. Zimmerman (18:50 3rd), C. Veloso (19:42 3rd)
Goal: MacU: Davis (37 shots, 34 saves); Man: Thornton (40 shots, 37 saves)
What a comeback! This was Senior’s Night, as the last regular season home game for the three departing seniors, namely Chase Hartje, Colton Veloso, and Dylan Thiessen. All three of them scored, and they were the three stars.
There was no scoring in the 1st period, and the Family Guys led 1-0 after two. This set up a crazy 3rd period. Dylan Thiessen scored on the PP in the first minute. However, the Mythical Mutants scored two shorthanded goals (Brendan Boyle after 6 and Kole Gable after 13 minutes) to take a 3-1 lead. With Kolby Thornton pulled in favour of an extra attacker, Riley Zimmerman scored with 1:10 to go, and Colton Veloso tied it up with 18 seconds left.
The 3-on-3 did not produce a goal, so off to a shootout. Thornton stopped all three shooters from The Family Guys, and Hartje scored for the Bisons for the victory.

I never saw any of this one. A nice comfy win for the Banjo-Cats as they wrapped up their home schedule. Holy Trinity has a day off and then play the Banjo-Mutts Monday/Tuesday and the Evil Monkeys Friday/Saturday. Another win for them will be hard to find.

Once again, I managed to see the end of this one. There was a pretty good stagger on the evening’s schedule, making this possible. These teams are very close in calibre, and I could see either team winning a playoff series. They each scored six goals on the weekend, with no overtime points.

I saw a lot of this game, and it was a terrific game and a very high quality broadcast. This would have been a good U-Cup semi-final. The T-irds took a too many men penalty with 7 seconds left, and the Evil Monkeys scored the OT winner on that PP. It was a fabulous win for the Monkeys, but a quick gander at the standings will tell you that they will finish 5th unless a Tier 2 team wins a game or two.

MacU: K. Gable (11:05 1st), K. Gable (13:48 1st), L. Schaufler (16:05 1st), K. Chabot (13:01 2nd), K. Gable (13:16 2nd), K. Chabot (09:29 3rd), V. Scott (16:23 3rd)
Man: R. Zimmerman (08:58 1st), J. Paulhus (19:09 1st)
Goal: MacU: Abel (30 shots, 28 saves); Man: Hawryluk (36 shots, 29 saves)
The Bisons started out on fire. The 1st period was fast-paced and back-and-forth. There was a stretch of over 5 minutes right off the bat without a whistle.
The big problems for the Bisons were their PK and goaltending.
On the PP, MacEwan was 3-for-7 officially, but their 3rd goal was just seconds after a Bison penalty expired. The Bisons themselves were 1-for-2 on the PP, but also surrendered a shorthanded goal near the end of the game.
That 3rd goal for the Family Guys was in my opinion the back-breaker. The Bisons had just killed a penalty and MacEwan just dumped in a floater to get a faceoff in the Bison end. Hawryluk misjudged it and suddenly a tight game was then 3-1. It seemed that the Herd could never get a save when they needed one. This is unfortunate because they have been getting stellar goaltending for a while now, especially from Hawryluk. In save percentage, Hawryluk ranks 7th (.908) and Thornton ranks 10th (.898).
The win gives the Mythical Mutants their first playoff berth.

Goal: TWU: Sommer L (29 shots, 23 saves) LaBelle (16 shots, 14 saves); Reg: Anders (32 shots, 32 saves)
MacEwan’s win ended Regina’s hopes, but the Banjo-Cats whipped the tar out of Holy Trinity just for kicks. This series is generating less interest than any CW series played in my memory.

I caught the ending of this one, and it was quite a battle. The Bluegars were clinging to a lead and the ending was very heated. Farkas was the star in MRU’s net, facing 38 shots. It’s looking like the top three are pulling away.

After the MRU-Sask game was over, I saw the ending of this one. The Evil Mnkeys had been down 2-0, but came back to tie the game. From when I started watching (about 5 minutes left), the T-irds dominated play until they scored. There were 46 minutes in penalties, so the return match could be fiesty.

The Bisons have a mighty big Task ahead of them if they wish to secure a playoff berth. They must beat the Family Guys twice this weekend, in regulation, and then sweep the Banjo-Mutts next weekend. In the process the Bisons’ pluses and Mac’s minuses must add to 21.
Saturday is the final regular season game for seniors Chase Hartje, Dylan Thiessen, and Colton Veloso.

Trailing 2-1 entering the 3rd period, Dylan Thiessen scored his 3rd and 4th goals of the season to seal a Bison comeback victory over Holy Trinity. This was the Herd’s first series sweep of the season.
Oddly, the Bisons’ destiny is basically in their own hands. The Bisons need a sweep of MacEwan (who have just those two games left on their schedule) and Saskatchewan, plus Regina must lose one of their four games (against Holy Trinity and Bedrock U). Then comes the tiebreaker, to be addressed!

The Banjo-Cats have really been playing poorly lately. They have these flat periods in every game it seems.
This sets up next weekend’s series between the Family Guys and the Bisons. As stated, if the Bisons win all four of their games, both Manitoba and MacEwan would finish with 17 points. If Regina loses at least once (which seems likely), we would head to a tie-breaker. The linked regulation states the process:1. Two teams tied:
The following shall determine the final league standings:
a) The best win/loss record in head-to-head games between the two teams.
b) If still tied, the number of wins in league play.
c) If still tied, the best goals for/goals against differential in league play.

Goal: Man: Hawryluk (52 shots, 51 saves); TWU: Sommer (32 shots, 29 saves)
For some reason, Holy Trinity scheduled this to start at 12:30 p.m. local time. The Bisons started fast, scoring on 3-out-of-4 powerplays and outshooting the Spartans 19-8. Thereafter the Bisons tended to cruise along, with leads of three and then two goals, while being outshot 44-13. Hayden Ostir returned to the lineup and scored a goal. The win keeps the Herd’s playoff hopes alive.

Big win for the Banjo-Mutts here. The CWTV video kept stalling for this game so I switched over to the Calgary-MRU game. If the Evil Monkeys lose on Saturday, they will likely finish 5th, and need three straight road series victories to win the conference title. Sask pulled even on points after this win, but have two games in hand, namely those two make-up games against Holy Trinity.

This sweep of their cross-town rivals gives the Bluegars a solid shot at 1st place. They are two points behind UBC and Bedrock U, with two games in hand on Bedrock U. Head-to-head against the Tier 1 teams, they are now 8-4-0, the only team over .500 against those teams.

The Battle for Eighth! Unfortunately, only six teams make the playoffs. That said, with just 6 games left the Bisons have a great chance to steal 6th place. They need four points this weekend, and four more against the Mythical Mutants next weekend. Somehow, the Bisons lost twice to Holy Trinity back in November. That was their low point of the season. Those were Trinity’s only wins of the season.

This was the annual Saddledome game with almost 10,000 fans in attendance. Twice the Dinos of Bedrock U took the lead, and twice the Bluegars tied it up. The shoot-out went MRU’s way. They outshot the Dinos 41-20, so I guess they deserved the win. The YouTube highlight package was very good.

This is a key series in the battle for the 6th and final playoff berth. The Family Guys have a 3-point edge over the Banjo-Cats, but have just four games left on the schedule. They hold an 8-point lead on the Bisons. However, they visit the Bisons next weekend. The Bisons will hope for a split here, so that they would make the playoffs with sweeps of Holy Trinity and the Mythical Mutants, and a split when they close in Saskatchewan.

The still new RSEQ Division 2 is hard to follow. None of the teams have a traditional website with stories, schedules, and various links.
This is somewhat conjecture on my part, but it looks like each of the three teams is playing 6 games against the other two teams in Division 2 plus a random selection of exhibition games against College (CEGEP) teams.
The CMRSJ Remparts have played one game, an 11-0 loss to a CEGEP team. One other scheduled game has no reported score, and only one more game is scheduled, in February.
The remaining games on the schedule are:

Goal: Calg: Stankowski (12 shots, 11 saves); Man: Thornton (46 shots, 41 saves)
This game and Friday’s game were both 5-1 scores. However, the games were not at all alike.
The line-ups had few changes. Both sides switched their starting goaltenders, Bedrock U switched out forward #11 Carter Massier for defenceman #22 Connor Hornung, and the Bisons swapped #13 Andre Sutter for #26 Andrew Boucher. The 7-11 split meant that the Dinos’ lines a defence pairs were in a continual state of flux, also affected by the constant parade to the penalty box. For the Bisons, the change just affected the 4th line and the rest stayed intact.
To be successful, the Bisons have to commit to physical play and stay in position. That was not happening here. The stats say that the Dinos were 2-for-8 on the PP, and the Bisons were 1-for-3, however the Bisons also gave up a goal with a few seconds of the expiry of a penalty. So really Calgary was 3-for-8.
The Bisons had a chance to start the scoring, but Colton Veloso was stopped on a penalty shot after 4 minutes of play. Within 42 seconds of the 2nd period, the Bisons trailed 4-0. Parker Malchuk’s powerplay marker made it 4-1, and they had several close calls to narrow the lead to 4-2.

The lack of reliable skilled forwards is what is holding the Bisons back. They have just 3 goals in 5 games since the New Year. Otherwise 4 of their 5 games (all against Tier 1 teams) were winnable.
In the 2nd period, Riley Zimmerman opened the scoring with his 1st goal as a Bison. Carl Tetachuk in the Dinos’ goal just whiffed on one. The Dinos levelled the score on the PP. Although Zach Wytinck scored, it was set up following a nice play at the blueline (I believe by #19 Jaeger White) when a clearing pass was plucked from mid-air and caused quite a scramble around the net. The 1-3-1 broke down a short while later when Max Patterson converted a 2-on-1. The Bison defender (I could not get his number) got caught chasing the puck carrier and leaving the trailer wide open.
Just over a minute into the 3rd, the Bisons lost their nerve. The entire team was to the right of the goal, whilst Colson Gengenbach was all alone to the left. He could have counted two steamboats before tapping it into the empty net. There were few opportunities for goals thereafter. The Dinos made it 4-1 on Krebs’ point shot which may have bounced off a Bison, and 5-1 on an empty-netter.
Captain Hooker
Cameron Trimble and Jadon Joseph take the draw.

The gap between Tier 1 and Tier was accentuated in this game. All I saw tonight was the Bison game (live) and the British Californians (end of 2nd period onward on CWTV). But this 10-0 was shocking, especially considering that these teams were 5th and 6th going into the night. It’s funny that both Mythical Mutant goaltenders stopped 19 of 24 shots.

This was the Friday game. Although each side had just three powerplays, this was an excessively chippy game with several melees and philosophical discussions after the whistle. The flow of play was almost all one way, toward the Holy Trinity net. This was UBC’s Winter Classic, so they drew 4,802 fans to this one.

Bedrock U is now one point behind UBC in the race for 1st place. The Bisons are 6 points behind MacEwan in the race for 6th place. At the start of the season it looked like the Dinos were on their way to a Yabba-Dabba-Doo time. Now they are in that tight bundle of Tier 1 teams. I suspect that the Bisons will manage at least one close game on home ice. They did have two tight games with UBC two weeks ago. Of concern must be that the Bisons were shutout twice by the Bluegars last weekend.

The CW had a good staggered Saturday scheduled, making it possible to see at least a period of every game. Then the cancellations in British California created a large gap. More on that later.
The Bisons were clearly better than on Friday, but they proved again that they need a Grade A goal-scorer or two. As it went, the Bluegars scored a 1st period goal from a period of sustained pressuree, a 2nd period goal on a PP when Tony APetagon of all people was assessed a 5-minute major for boarding, and a 3rd period empty-netter.

The away team won both games in this series. Each side switched starting goaltenders for this one, continuing the usual rotations they have used all season. This game seemed closer than the score would indicate. Bedrock U scored 5 goals on 11 shots in the 2nd period. IMO, this result will make it difficult for the Evil Monkeys to secure a bye to the semi-final round.

First, they changed this Friday-Saturday series to a Saturday-Sunday format so as to allow the Banjo-Mutts time to mush their sleds through the rockies.
Second, they cancelled the series altogether. Making it up in the next four weeks will not be easy. The Mutts really could use the four points available here.

January 7, 2024: BUSY SUNDAY IN UNIVERSITY HOCKEY
There was an extremely rare game in the CW on Sunday, plus a lot of games elsewhere in destinations east and west.

Quick Summary
Sask: L. Keeler (07:33 1st), C. Hayes (11:46 1st), J. Ball (09:48 2nd), C. Stebbings (15:00 2nd), J. Ball (18:20 2nd), L. Keeler (19:57 2nd), J. Ball (06:01 3rd), C. Petruic (14:28 3rd), M. Rumsey (19:41 3rd)
Reg: none
Goal: Sask: Kooy (21 shots, 21 saves); Reg: Evanoff (L) (22 shots, 16 saves), Meger (14 shots,11 saves)
After a good game in Saskatown on Saturday, the Banjo-Cats came home only to be distracted by playing in the Brandt Centre. This win for the Banjo-Mutts vastly exceeded what I expected. This win pulls the Mutts level with the Bluegars in 4th place.

January 6, 2024: BIRDS COMPLETE SWEEP OF THE BISONS

MAN: N. Basarab (00:42 3rd)
Goal: UBC: Luding (18 shots, 17 saves); Man: Hawryluk (23 shots, 20 saves)
This was one of the most defensive games I have seen in the CW. The teams combined for just 41 shots. It was also a BC-style chippy game. However the Bisons were 0-for-7 and the T-irds were 0-for-4 on the powerplay. So on the weekend the teams were a combined 0-for-19 on the powerplay.
The Bisons had one line-up change, subbing Zimmerman for Ostir. Both teams siwtched their starting goaltender.

Like the game in Saskatown, this early start meant I did not see much of it. Of note, Bedrock U played one man short.

This was the closest game Holy Trinity has had with the Evil Monkeys until a pair of late goals (one into an empty net) put this one away. It was 2-1 in the 3rd. There were a load of powerplays, with TWU going 1-for-5 and the Apes going 1-for-7.

January 5, 2024: BISONS START 2024 WITH A LOSS

UBC: J. Kryski (03:33 1st), C. Douglas (05:12 1st), T. Rask (19:05 3rd)
Man: T. Apetagon (02:40 2nd)
Goal: UBC: Schwebius (25 shots, 24 saves); Man: Thornton (33 shots, 31 saves)
On a night when the Winnipeg Jets moved into first overall in the NHL (!!!!!), the Bisons welcomed a home crowd to the new year with a loss. The story here was a lack of finish by the Bisons. Especially when it was 2-1 playing in the 3rd period and great opportunities were missed. Here’s how they lined up:
MANITOBA BISONS
Goal:
30 Thornton (34 Hawryluk)
Defence:
16 Hartje - 27 Gottfried
8 Toth - 4 Malchuk
24 Wareham - 25 Calder
Forwards:
21 Basarab - 18 Hooker - 17 Veloso
20 Apetagon - 9 Thiessen - 11 Ostir
10 Paulhus - 12 Trimble - 26 Boucher
29 King - 28 Behun - 19 Arpin
Scratches:
Goal: 1 Harkness
Defence: 5 Casey - 6 Fry
Forwards: 13 Sutter - 14 Zimmerman - 23 Fawkes
U.B.C. THUNDERBIRDS
Goal:
60 Schwebius (31Luding)
Defence:
40 Smart - 26 Lambos
9 Smith - 27 McDonald
24 Lee - 12 Keon
Forwards:
17 Kindree - 8 Miller - 34 Mutala
14 Kryski - 41 Williams - 25 Wright
23 Rask - 4 Thorpe - 29 McNabb
13 Wismer - 15 Atkinson - 37 Douglas
Scratches:
Goal: 30 Lane
Defence: 7 N Form - 43 Pouliot
Forwards: 10 Doust - 19 J Form - 21 Huo - 38 Kotylak
The game was not physical, but chippy. That’s the style in British California. I expect that Saturday’s rematch could be a display of tempers. Both sides were 0-for-4 on the powerplay in this one.

This was the blowout expected by everybody. It was 1-0 for Holy Trinity after one period, but then there was a pile of penalties and bananas were flying everywhere. In the end, it was a BC-style chippy game where Trinity was 0-for-4 and the Evil Monkeys were 1-for-5 on the powerplay.

Welcome to 2024! The Bisons will be happy to say farewell to 2023. Can the Bisons rally to save the season?
The Bisons find themselves 8 points behind MacEwan, with two games in hand. The Bisons have 12 games left, Mac has just 10. The Bisons are done with Alberta and Regina, and have one series left against the rest. Their series against Mac is at home.
The best players will have to be the Bisons’ best players, to float a cliche. Statistically, Captain Hooker leads the forwards (10 goals & 5 assists) and Chase Hartje leads the defencemen (2 goals & 12 assists).
Goaltending is much better this year than last. Rookie Kolby Thornton carried the team early but I think got a bit burned out. He is 0-10-1 with a 3.81 GAA and .901 S% to be ranked 7th of all qualified goaltenders conference-wide. No “Tier 2" team has a goaltender at that level. Ross Hawryluk made an impact, going 2-2-0 with a 3.49 GAA and .918 S%. Though he has not played enough to be qualified in the goalie rankings, the only qualified goaltenders with a better save percentage are Carl Stankowski (Calgary) and Roddy Ross (Sask).
The T-irds are in the mad scramble amongst the top five teams. The 5th place team would have to win three straight series on the road to win the title. It’s never been done before in the CW. It is not hard to imagine any one of the five winning the title. They have no fewer than 7 players at a point-per-game or better, and four more at a half-point-per game or better.

The Evil Monkeys have had their ups and downs thus far. They sometimes look to be on the verge of recovering their perennial national championship contender status, and at other times they look vulnerable. I strongly suspect that Holy Trinity doesn’t a stand a prayer in this series. These sides have played six times. The Apes won three times by three goals each, once by four, once by five, and once by six.

This is a home-and-home Battle of Saudi Alberta, Friday in the Town of Bedrock and Saturday in Edmontown. The Family Guys are clinging to the 6th and final playoff berth, with a 3-point cushion over Regina. The Dinos are in a good place. Three of their five remaining series are against the Tier 2 teams.

The Battle of Banjoland is another home-and-home series, and is a unique Saturday-Sunday format. Like the other three series, this is a Tier 1 v. Tier 2 battle. I hear the winner gets a jug of moonshine.

Quick Summary
Man: O. Wareham (11:41 1st), C. Behun (02:45 2nd), T. Apetagon (04:01 2nd), H. Ostir (09:43 3rd)
Lake: J. Van Unen (01:56 1st), B. Borbely (09:20 1st), D. Massie (18:58 1st), T. Ho (06:39 2nd), G. Smith (07:13 2nd), D. Massie (05:35 3rd)
Goal: Man: Hawryluk (13 shots, 10 saves), Thornton (21 shots, 18 saves); Lake: Aiken (29 shots, 25 saves)
First, OUA TV worked wonderfully for this game. I was tempted to have it on the big screen and switch HNIC to my medium screen, but I did not want to push my luck.
All the Bisons scratched on Friday played on Saturday, except for d-man Kian Calder. Hopefully he’ll be back soon. The other scratches for the Bisons were Harkness in goal, Chase Hartje on defence, and forwards Veloso, Hooker, and King. So all the best players sat out one of the games.
The goaltending issue never completely goes away. Each of the three goalies played two periods on the weekend. In this one, Ross Hawryluk played the 1st period, and stopped 10 of 13 shots (14 of 18 over the weekend). Kolby Thornton then stopped 18 of 21 shots over the 2nd and 3rd periods. It might be my imagination, but the Bisons seem to be more confident with Thornton in net. This does lead to him being hung out to dry on occasion, however.
On a positive note, the Bison powerplay went 2-for-4 and the penalty killing was 2-for-2.

Goal: Man: Harkness (L) (23 shots, 18 saves), Hawryluk (5 shots, 4 saves); Lake: Wright (19 shots, 19 saves)
I tried watching this one on OUA TV. The good news: it is free. The bad news: The spinning circle was there the majority of the time and the audio sounded like Stan Mikita Doughnuts’ drive through on Wayne’s World.
The Bisons decided to give 3rd string goaltender Simon Harkness a start. He didn’t do too bad in pre-season but got just one poor start in the regular season. His record is 0-1-0, 9.23 GAA, and .786 S%. Ross Hawryluk played the 3rd period. I suspect that they’ll use Hawryluk and Kolby Thornton on Saturday so that each goaltender gets two period of play.
Scratches for the Bisons included Thornton in goal, Malchuk and Calder on defence, and Ostir, Basarab, and Behun up front. It was hard to make notes on line match-ups due to the inconsistent audio and video.

Christmas is over and New Year’s is pending. So some USports teams are kicking off the rust with some weekend action. There are also free streams of this series on OUA TV, for those not seeing enough hockey from the World Juniors, Spengler Cup, and the NHL. So put away the turkey, order some pizza, curry, or cheeseburgers, and get back into the groove.
There used to be 4-team tournament every holiday season in T-Bay, in which the Bisons participated on several occasions. It then became a double-header between Lakehead and an invited guest. This year it is the Bisons’ turn.
The Bisons will be anxious to say farewell to 2023. Last year they went a not-so-bad 7-9-0 in the 2022 1st semester but then fell to 1-10-1 in the 2023 2nd semester. So a reversal would be the goal this season.
The Thundermutts have been wobbly thus far. They looked like a team with a good shot at a U-Cup berth last season, but have fallen back to mid-table team this time. I admit that I root for them when they compete in the OUA, being a former GPAC team and all.

This Friday night game was a late addition to the non-conference schedule. It makes sense that these two teams from Edmontown would play a game like this. However, it would be better to see them choose opponents from another conference. NAIT from the ACAC used to be a part of this process.

If you want to see a Saturday late-night free livestream, they have one here. The BCIHL has all games on YouTube.
This is the Harlem Globetrotters version of the Red Leafs. They have one squad in the BCIHL, and that squad is 4-3-1 and sits in 4th. The travelling team seldom plays in British California. After this game, they have only five games left on their schedule (all in the Excited States) and three of those are on one weekend.
Holy Trinity beat SFU 3-2 on September 9th. In 2022-23, Holy Trinity won two out of their three games (SFU won 6-3, TWU won 5-0 and 5-2).
FWIW, thus far the Globetrotters are 0-2-0 against the CW, 2-0-0 against the ACAC, 0-5-0 against NCAA D1, 0-2-0 against NCAA D3, and 1-0-0 against the ACHA.

This is on January 2nd, which is technically after the holiday season. However, it is on a Tuesday night before conference play resumes. These teams did not meet in the pre-season, as they usually do. Instead, Manitoba and Minot State visited Banjoland and took turns playing these two teams over the same weekend.
The Clippers are not the ACAC doormats they once were. They were 13-9-2 last season, good for 4th place, and have taken a further step this year.

➤ MRU: Bouchard named WHL Grad of the Month for November/December
There are no seasons greetings games for the Bluegars (nor for Sask, Calgary, and UBC) but there is at least news from MRU. Conor Bouchard was named WHL Grad-of-the-Month for November/December. He had 35 points in 25 games last year, and has 16 goals and 20 assists through 16 games this year.

The Banjo-Mutts became the first Tier 1 victims of Holy Trinity in the Tuesday game of this make-up series. All it took was a 52 save performance and a shoot-out. The Mutts could still finish as high as 2nd or as low as 5th. Do any other Tier 2 teams have an upset in them?
