OFFICIAL HOLLYWOOD TOP 35 ~ 2023-24 ~ POLL 13 ~DECEMBER 3, 2023
Once again, nobody switched categories this week, which is even more unusual. Ontario Tech have beeen moving up, and if they hold on for another week they will be moving up to C+. On the other hand, Lakehead’s two losses move them back to teetering on the brink.
* indicates total includes a tie game
Conf. indicates overall conference record
Conf-x indicates exhibition record within conference
USP-x indicates exhibition record within USports but outside conference
USP ∑ indicates regular season and exhibition record against USports teams
Other indicates record against non-USports teams
Total indicates record against all teams
AOA is the average of averages against each category of opponent.
~ Indicates results “smoothed” to reduce impact of categories with fewer games. The categories are merged and the value applied to both. -
December 3, 2023: THE MISSING LINKS
Still nothing from the Bluegars nor the Evil Monkeys, but lots from the Banjo-Mutts, and MacEwan is always reliable.

December 2, 2023: WEEKEND OF SWEEPS AS THE 1ST SEMESTER WRAPS UP
The good news for the Bisons is that they lost no ground while not even playing. There were lots of goals this Saturday night. Just read down.

Goal: Calg: Tetachuk (22 shots, 20 saves); TWU: Sommer (45 shots, 41 saves)
Odd 1st period. Holy Trinity built a 2-0 lead, but Bedrock U came back to tie it up by intermission. The shots were 26-4 in favour of the Dinos. The rest of the claim was closer (shots 20-18 in favour of the Dinos) but they gradually cemented a lead. Of note, the Dinos played two men short.

Goal: MRU: Farkas (23 shots, 19 saves); Sask: Kooy (29 shots, 24 saves)
This was a key sweep for the Bluegars, actually giving them the best head-to-head record amongst the Tier 1 teams. The 2nd period was wild. Sask entered the period with a 1-0 lead, and left trailing 5-1. MRU went 3-for-3 on the PP. After that wild 2nd period, I switched my focus elsewhere. The stats would imply weak goaltending with a combined 5 goals on 17 shots.

Goal: Reg: Evanoff (45 shots, 38 saves); UBC: Schwebius (23 shots, 22 saves)
The Banjo-Cats look like the weakest team in the CW now. There were only two PPs each, so it was just Cats chasing around fruitlessly after Birds. Reminiscent of Sylvestre, Tweety Bird, and an old lady armed with an umbrella.

This was the evening’s nightcap, so I saw a lot if it. Both sides looked sloppy. The Evil Monkeys always looked like they were about to burst out and bury the Family Guys, but never really did.

This is the feature match-up of the weekend in the CW as the 1st semester comes to an end. The top five teams in the conference are so close. Calgary has 25 points, UBC 24, and Alberta and these two teams have 22. A sweep could put one of these teams in 1st place, and the other in 5th.

This Battle of Edmontown is a home-and-home series. After losing to the Bisons, the Evil Monkeys can ill-afford a loss to the Family Guys. Easier said than done, though. The Mythical Mutants have not had many poor games thus far.

The Banjo-Cats could be slipping kind of far from the playoff race if they are swept in British California this weekend. The T-irds were on a mini-slump, which they ended in game two last weekend. They are 8-0-0 against the Tier 2 teams, including an earlier sweep of their series in Regina.
TRINITY WESTERN SPARTANS (2-11-1, 6-13-1, OHT35 #31)
Links:
➤ UofC: Team Website

Bedrock U is also 8-0-0 against Tier 2 teams, including a home sweep against Holy Trinity. Holy Trinity trail MacEwan by 8 points, so they will need wins over Tier 1 teams if they want to get in to the CW playoff race.

First, do not over-react to the final score. Well into the 2nd period, I thought this had a good chance to be a Bison sweep.
The lineup had three changes. On defence, Brandon Casey was in for Owen Wareham. Up front, Andre Sutter and Riley Zimmerman were in for Colton Veloso and Eric Fawkes. Codey Behun left the game with an injury when Cam Wiebe of the Monkeys kneed him, getting a 5-minute major and a game misconduct.
The Monkeys switched goaltenders, as usual, but were otherwise unchanged. Their line-up was altered when forward Jacob Kendall was hurt and, of course, when Wiebe was tossed.
The difference in this game was the powerplay. The Monkeys went 2-for-3, the Bisons were 0-for-4 and gave up a shorthanded goal.
The 2nd period was what turned the game around. The Bisons trailed 1-0 after one, in an evenly played period. They took control in 2nd, outshooting the Monkeys 13-7. However, the Monkeys got the only two goals, which were similar. The Bisons would get the Monkeys running around in circles for a prolonged period, eventually lose the puck, and rather than switch to defence make a vain attempt to keep up the offence and, instead, surrender a quick break-out with nobody back for rebound control. The 2nd Monkey goal came after Riley Zimmerman missed two close calls in a net-front scramble. The 3rd Monkey goal was shorthanded and was particularly galling, as it made the game 3-0 heading into a 3rd period where the Bisons deserved, at worst, to be tied.
The Monkeys scored in the first minute of the 3rd period, and the Bisons had no bounce-back from that point onward. Andre Sutter (usually a healthy scratch) had his 1st goal for the Bisons, and two late Monkey goals padded their stats and scoreline.
The Bisons end the first semester with a bye next weekend. Then it’s off to Thunder Bay for some non-conference action on December 29th and 30th. The next home series is against UBC on January 5th and 6th.

Holy Trinity played quite well in this one. Trailing 2-1 entering the 3rd, they took a 3-2 lead. The Bluegars scored with 90 seconds left to force OT, and ultimately took it on a shootout. Had Holy Trinity won that shootout, every series this weekend would have been split.

The T-irds must have been feeling some pressure heading into this one. A loss here in the Town of Bedrock and their hopes of a 1st place finish would have taken a serious pounding. The Dinos played down a man, due to that dreaded injury bug. It seems to get to everybody sooner or later.

➤ UofM: Hooker And Hawryluk Heros As The Manitoba Bisons Stun The Alberta Golden Bears 3-2 At Wayne Fleming Arena (with boxscore)
➤ UofA: Team Website
Quick Summary
Alta: A. Hall (08:03 2nd), N. Boyko (17:50 3rd)

Goal: Alta: Berlin (29 shots, 26 saves); Man: Hawryluk (36 shots, 34 saves)
The Bisons needed some points against Tier 1 opposition, and really earned it against the Evil Monkeys. This was by the best game of the season for the Herd. Here’s how they lined up:
MANITOBA

34 Hawryluk (30 Thornton)

Scratches:

F: 5 Tapia - 13 Fincaryk - 29 Paterson
The Monkeys wore their white jerseys with the Evil Monkey logo, and the Bisons wore their dark brown. This is the best visual combo these teams can offer.
The opening Bison goal was a goal-mouth scramble, initially awarded to Eric Fawkes, later changed to Cameron Trimble, making it 1-0 after one.
The Evil Monkeys levelled the score in a 2nd period they dominated (15-8 on the shot clock). Adam Hall converted a wonderful passing play.
Jackson Arpin restored the Bison lead just about two minutes into the 3rd period. The Bisons then clamped down and appeared to have it under control. But with just over two minutes left, Ross Hawryluk (who had an outstanding game and is certainly on a roll) whiffed on an unobstructed point shot from Noah Boyko. Ugh. Was this to be another disappointment in a season that’s not working?
Nope! Captain Hooker ripped a one-timer in 3-on-3 overtime to salt it away, and the Bisons got two needed points.
One word about the lines. Colton Veloso was injured so all the lines were shuffled about for the ending of the game.
The rematch goes Saturday at 2:00 p.m., not the 3:00 p.m. start previously advertised.
Captain Hooker scores!
And it’s celly time!

This was the key matchup of the weekend when it comes to playoff berths. I was unable to see any of the out-of-town games due to my live attendance at the U of M. The goaltenders were sharp here. The last goal was an empty-netter.

This game was tighter than the score would indicate. Until the Bluegars scored on the PP 13 minutes into the 3rd period, it was just a 1-0 game. The shots in the 3rd period were 15-4 in favour of the Bluegars, so Holy Trinity might not be in great shape for the rematch.

The Bisons bring their first semester to a close with a homestand against the Evil Monkeys. Although they sit 4th in the CW, they and Calgary are the only teams in the CW with positive records against their fellow Tier 1 opponents. (Both due to having an OTL.) The difference is that whereas Calgary, Saskatchewan, and UBC are 8-0-0 against Tier 2, the Monkeys are just 4-0-0. They need to sweep the Bisons here, and MacEwan next weekend, to keep pace for the pennant.
Oddly enough, the Bisons have above-average goaltending stats. Ross Hawryluk came from the backup role to hold the hot hand in his two starts. His stats line is 1-1-0, .936 S%, 3.12 GAA. Kolby Thornton is 0-10-1, .901 S%, and 3.81 GAA. (The Hockey Tech site has two entries for him, with one indicating he surrender 0 goals on 19 shots in 21 minutes. If those should be added to his stats line, he would have a .905 S%, which would be 4th amongst qualified goaltenders in the CW.) His numbers have declined in the last two weekends.
The other positive aspect of the Bison season thus far is the powerplay, sitting at #3 with a 22.6% success rate. The PK is just 78.8%, last in the CW. Overall, they are (barely) on the plus side of the ledger.
Jonny Hooker still leads the team with 9-5-14 in 14 GPs. Chase Hartje is one point behind with 2-11-13, and sits 5th amongst defencemen.
The Monkeys are still contenders, and could easily finish first, but are not as scary as they once were. They used to dominate the shot clock and the scoring race. This year, they have been outshot several games, and last weekend could well have lost to Regina.
Both Ape goaltenders have lesser numbers than the Bison goaltenders. Matt Berlin is 5-0-1, .896 S%, 2.86 GAA and Ethan Kruger is 3-4-0, .869 S%, and 3.31 GAA. They also have just two players at or above a PPG ratio. Eric Florchuk is 6-14-20 and Josh Prokop is 8-8-16. They have outscored their opponents 56-45, whilst the Bisons are down 24-61.
The linked story is a sad one about the death of forward Hayden Ostir’s boyhood friend, Declan Erickson, a year ago. Worth a click, I say.

This is a key series for these teams as they could be fighting for the 6th and final playoff berth this year. The Family Guys are thus far the only Tier 2 team with a win over a Tier 1 team, which gives them a big edge. The Banjo-Cats did well against Alberta last weekend, and could well have matched the Mythical Mutants accomplishment.

After a loss to MacEwan, the Bluegars cannot afford another loss to a Tier 2 team if they want to avoid 5th place. Holy Trinity is, like the Bisons, in a situation where they need a miracle or two to challenge for a playoff berth. A win over the Bluegars last year cost MRU 2nd place and a first round bye.

This is the feature series of the weekend in the CW. The T-irds were swept by the Banjo-Mutts on home ice last week, and now enter the Town of Bedrock looking for a bounce-back. Against Tier 1, UBC is 3-3-0, Calgary is 3-2-1. Against Tier 2, both are 8-0-0. UBC leads the CW in goals scored with 70 (Calgary has 62) and Calgary is 2nd in fewest goals allowed with 32 (UBC allowed 39). So UBC is +31, Calgary +30.

Goal: Man: Thornton L (22 shots, 17 saves), Hawryluk (30 shots, 26 saves); Calg: Tetachuk (21 shots, 20 saves)
This was grim from the outset. Kolby Thornton was back as the starter in goal, but maybe his confidence is not where it once was. I got in right at 4:00 when it started, but by the time I got the stream going it was already 2-0. The 1st period was reasonable (shots 15-11 for the Dinos), but in the 2nd the shots were 18-1 for the Dinos and it looked like it. The weekend results vault the Dinos back into 1st place.

If anything, the Banjo-Mutts dominated this game more than Friday’s. Holding a 3-2 lead entering the 3rd, the T-irds were outshot 11-3 in that 3rd period alone. Those five Tier 1 teams never seem to put any distance between themselves and the rest of the pack. Ross Hawryluk has caught fire in the Bison net, and managed to keep this one close. Maybe we’ll see a rotation in net. A bit of rest is needed once a goaltender has been tenderized with 50+ shots. The 1st period was very close, and a late goal by Cody Behun had the Bisons looking like a potential giant-killer. However, over the final two frames the shots were 38-13 in favour of Bedrock U, and the score flattered the Bisons. On the positive side, defenceman Ryan Gottfried returned to the Bison blueline.

I was able to pick up the 3rd period of this one from the PST zone. The T-irds stunk. Their worst game of the year. The Banjo-Mutts proved that any of the Tier 1 can beat the others any time.

The Bisons are off to the Town of Bedrock this weekend to face the Dinos. Whilst the Dinos started the season racking up the W’s and coasting to a ranking at the top of the national rankings, they have since come back to Earth a little. They are still #3 in the OHT35, and are prohibitive favourites this weekend.
The Dinos are a Tier 1 team, and the Bisons are a Tier 2 team. Tier 1 teams are 28-0 against Tier 2 teams so far, and only 4 of those wins were in extra time. The Bisons have one of those OTLs, and would likely be happy to pick up one or two points in this series.
The Dinos are way better on offence (51 goals, v 22 for the Bisons) and on defence (30 goals against, v 50 for the Bisons). Each side has some stars. Calgary’s Colson Gengenbach leads the CW in goals with 10, but Jonny Hooker has 9 for the Bisons. The Herd also has Chase Hartje on defence, tied for 4th in scoring by a d-man, with 2 goals and 11 assists.
If the Bisons can steal points here, they will need goaltending. Kolby Thornton of the Bisons and Carl Stankowski of the Dinos are tied for 2nd with .908 save percentages. Thus far, the Dinos have split their goaltending between Stankowski and Carl Tetachuk (.899 S%). Bison backup Ross Hawryluk has a .951 S% in the one game he played last weekend.

This home-and-home Battle of Former ACAC Teams is one the Bisons will be following, in hopes that the Bluegars can sweep the Family Guys in regulation time on both nights. The Bluegars look better than I had anticipated. They are solidly in the middle of the five Tier 1 teams.

The Evil Monkeys have had what is, for them, a wonky start. Yet, they are in the range of the national contenders. The Banjo-Cats are having pretty much the start one would expect. They are generally a borderline playoff team, and that looks to be their fate again this year.

This is the feature match-up of the weekend. The rest have Tier 1 v Tier 2, and this one has Tier 1 v Tier 1. The T-irds started with a sweep of Alberta, then had a soft schedule, but for their split with MRU. In comparison, the Banjo-Mutts are 1-1-0 v Alberta and 0-2-0 v Calgary. Both sides are 8-0-0 against Tier 2 teams. These games should be worth a peak.

This series was previously announced for Holy Trinity’s bye weekend, but it is currently not on either team’s schedule. The schedules on the West Coast were in a constant state of flux in pre-season.
Since TWU left the BCIHL, StFU have dominated the BCIHL. So this year they have two sides. The Globetrotters have a (mostly) road schedule against a hodge-podge of non-BCIHL teams, whilst the “2nd” team operates in the BCIHL, where they have a 2-3-1 record. The Globetrotters lost pre-season games to TWU and UBC. They won twice over Briercrest (ACAC)and once over Pittsburgh (ACHA). In addition to their CW losses, they also lost to Adrian College (NCAA D3), and have four losses to NCAA D1 teams (Michigan, Colorado College, Lake Superior State, and Robert Morris).
The Red Leafs hosted that Briercrest series, and have home games pending against Holy Trinity on December 30th and UBC on January 27th.

November 11, 2023: BISONS HIT THE WIN COLUMN

Goal: Man: Hawryluk (41 shots, 39 saves); Anders (41 shots, 38 saves)
The Bisons have hit the win column at long last. Goaltender Ross Hawryluk made his first start of the season, and had a good game. Each goaltender faced 41 shots. (Kolby Thornton faced 44, and stopped 41, on Friday.)
The Banjo-Cats opened a 2-0 lead early in the 3rd period before the Bisons mounted a rally. Captain Hooker opened the scoring with his 9th of the season on a mid-period powerplay. Colton Veloso scored another powerplay goal with less than three minutes left to play. Jackson Arpin then got the winner just 29 seconds later.
Those game-tying and winning goals happened when the CWTV stream was showing a spinning circle. Now that was aggravating.
After both sides went 0-for-6 on the powerplay on Friday, in this game the Bisons were 2-for-3 and Regina was 1-for-2.

Bedrock U needed this road sweep to build some cred as a nation-wide contender. They built a 3-0 lead after the 1st and then hung on for the win. Of note, the Banjo-Mutts went 2-for-3 on the powerplay. I was unable to catch this one due to a crowded afternoon/early evening schedule which included Jets and Bombers, plus the Bison game starting at 5:00.

I was able to catch a lot of this one, due to it being the late game. The Evil Monkeys rallied from a thorough defeat on Friday in Calgary to get their own convincing win back in Edmontown. The last two Monkey goals were empty-netters, however they did really control the play in this one.

Yet another loss for the Bisons has them teetering on the brink. I was out at a family dinner but did see most of the goals. In the 3rd period the Bisons were down 2-1 and applied severe pressure, generating some powerplay chances. However, they could not score, Regina scored an insurance marker, and an empty-netter wrapped up the scoring. Both sides went 0-for-6 on their powerplays.

For the first time in a long time, these teams will play just one series against each other this season. This series is pretty much the Herd’s last chance to rally for a playoff berth. The Tier 1 teams in the CW are 28-0 against the Tier 2 teams (four of those in extra time). I don’t see that changing a whole lot. So ground must be made up against the Tier 2 teams. Both sides have been outscored rather heavily, Regina 42-27, and Manitoba 44-19.
Last year, the Bisons swept the games in Banjoland, and Regina swept the games in Winnipeg. The games in Winnipeg opened the second semester and started the Bisons on a 1-10-1 run.
I’ll be looking to see if any defencemen are returning to the Bison lineup. Recent series have seen them play with just five, which is not good.

The Banjo-Mutts were 8-0-0 to start the season, with two wins over each Tier 2 team. However, they split against the Evil Monkeys last weekend and, in my opinion, had the edge in play. IMO, the five Tier 1 teams are hard to handicap right now. The Dinos were receiving a lot of positive attention to start, based on last year’s record and a 6-0-0 pre-season, but they have been 1-1-0 against MRU and 0-1-1 against Alberta. I expect this series to be well worth a good look.

If any series can challenge the one in Saskatown for eager anticipation, it is this home-and-home series for the rivals in Saudi Alberta. These teams thus far have the fewest Tier 1 vs Tier 2 games, the Bluegars having just four and the Evil Monkeys only two. Against Tier 1 teams, MRU is 3-3-0 and Alberta is 4-3-1.

In the Tier 2, there is one playoff berth at stake for whichever team can prevail. Right now, the Family Guys are one point out, and Holy Trinity are two points out. Regina and Manitoba will just be hoping that there is no overtime here.

November 4, 2023: TIER 1 TEAMS SPLIT THEIR SERIES
The Bisons finished their series on Friday night, so all we have is three games from out of town.

Goal: Calg: Tetachuk (17 shots, 15 saves); Reg: Evanoff (44 shots, 40 saves)
On a super busy Saturday (Jets started at 3:00 followed by a smorgasbord of NHL games, two CFL playoff games, and two CW football playoff games), this game was almost lost in the shuffle. But I did see a lot. The score was close than Friday’s, but this was a very dominant performance by Bedrock U. The Banjo-Cats did manage two goals on six shots in the 2nd period. They only had three shots in the 3rd period, hence no chance of a rally.

Goal: Sask: Ross (18 shots, 14 saves); Alta: Berlin (41 shots, 38 saves)
This game was a late-starter so I saw most of it. Sounds funny to say, but the Evil Monkeys were kinda dominated. They have enough skill to cash in their chances. Overall, the split was probably an appropriate result. The Mutts tied the game at 2-2 on a 2nd period penalty shot, awarded whilst short-handed. Now, That’s a rarity. Matt Berlin definitely was the star of the game in the Monkey goal.

I was able to see the 1st period of this one. The T-irds built a 5-1 lead and had the Bluegars reeling throughout. MRU put up a bit of a fight thereafter to make the final score reasonable. I’m thinking that the five Tier 1 teams are all capable of beating one another, and expect that most series they play will be splits.

After a strong finish on Thursday, the Bisons had no follow-up in this one. I could not attend in person due to car trouble, and had to rely on CWTV. Unfortunately, the stream would not connect for most of the first half of the game. The Bisons had just one line-up change, Eric Fawkes subbing in for Cameron Trimble. The Bisons now need a sweep of their own in Regina next weekend.
It seems the Bisons have made themselves into a team that tries to contain superior opponents, not to crush the weaker teams. Of the Tier 2 teams, they give the Tier 1 teams the most problems. Yet they are 0-4-0 head-to-head against the Tier 2 teams.

I caught the end of this one, and it was very well played. Both sides had well-organized defensive structure and could be a problem for any opponent. The rematch should be good. Sask has proven they can play at a Tier 1 level. That 5-way race is on, IMO.

Holy Trinity scored on their first two shots on goal. That had the Bisons looking lost for the 1st period, in which they were outshot 17-7. The Bisons did take control of the 2nd and 3rd periods, outshooting the Spartans 29-13. By the 3rd, the Spartans looked gassed as they were clinging to a lead. The Bisons have to be confident heading into Friday’s rematch. But they needed a sweep to get back into contendership for a playoff berth.
There were some dumb penalties and odd calls of note late in the game. In the last 4 minutes, goaltender Leon Sommer knocked the net off its moorings for the 4th time, and got a minor penalty. In the last 3 minutes, Bison Colton Veloso got 2 minutes for slapping a defenceman’s stick out of his way and sent it flying. Then just 15 seconds later, Holy Trinity’s Michael Spafford thought it would be a good idea to trip the goalie with nobody around them. After the Bisons scored on the latter PP, Thornton went to the bench for an extra attacker. The officials must have lost count, because they blew the whistle as the Bisons entered the offensive zone then had a face-off at centre ice. The Bisons mounted another attack and there was a battle for the puck in the TWU corner. Suddenly we heard a whistle. Why? Nobody knows. However the face-off came out of the TWU zone.

Last year the Bisons’ season fell apart when they hosted Holy Trinity. They were 7-9-0 at the end of the 1st semester, ending with a sweep of MacEwan and a split with Sask. After the break they were on a 0-6-0 run, but still had a great shot at a playoff berth with a sweep of TWU. Instead, they played their two worst games of the season, losing 7-1 and winning 7-6 (a game they led 6-2). Four more losses finished the season in an inglorious ending.
The three holy goalies have eerily similar stats. Audet (4.90 GAA, .898 S%, 0-2-0) Sommer (4.90 GAA,.894 S%, 0-5-0), and Berkeliev (5.10 GAA, .906 S%, 0-1-0) are not really the team’s problem. Their cumulative save percentage is comparable to the rest of the league. The team has just 11 goals through eight games. Not one Spartan has more than two points thus far.
The Bisons are improving under their new coach. Even as it is, they may well be the “best of the rest” amongst the bottom four, all desperately trying for that last playoff berth.
I’m not a big fan of Thursday games, likely so scheduled because the CFL Western Semi-Final would have been at the stadium on Saturday had the Bombers finished 2nd.

The CW has become a two-tier league again this year. This is the only inter-tier matchup of the weekend. Here is each team’s record against Tier 1 teams:
Tier 1
U.B.C. 2-0-0
Alberta 3-2-1
M.R.U. 2-2-0
Calgary 1-2-1
Sask. 0-0-0
Tier 2
Regina 0-4-2
Manitoba 0-5-1
MacEwan 0-7-1
Trinity 0-6-0
The linked story is about Dinos’ head coach Mark Howell and video coach Alex Jozsa being named to the staff for the USports v. National Junior Team Selection games on December 12-13. Others named are Brett Gibson (Queen's - head coach), David Urquhart (McGill - assistant coach), Richard Lim (RMC - assistant coach), Jamie Nicholl-Carne (Queen's - equipment manager), and Adam Ellwood (Windsor - athletic therapist).

The Banjo-Mutts have had a weirdly soft schedule thus far. 8-0-0 looks really good, but their four opponents thus far are Manitoba, MacEwan, Regina, and Trinity. They were only 1-4-1 in the pre-season, against a cross-section of teams. So now we’ll see what they have. The Evil Monkeys started with two losses to UBC, but since then are 5-0-1 against a cross-section of opponents. They looked back to their banana-loving selves in rolling over Calgary twice last weekend. This could be the best series to watch this weekend. Of note, their football teams meet on Saturday afternoon in a semi-final game.

Like Sask, the T-irds are 8-0-0 against the bottom four teams. They did open the season with a sweep of the Evil Monkeys. So this series is a chance to prove themselves. The Bluegars look decent, especially after having lost so much talent from last year.

With the Rugby World Cup final, Bisons-Dinos football, Jets hockey, and the World Series, it was a tough day to devote sufficient time to each and every game I wanted to watch. I had to forego live attendance at this game. The Bluegars switched goaltenders, but otherwise the line-ups looked alike. As of this post, GoBisons.ca has not updated game stories for the hockey game, nor for the football game.
Sidebar: The football ending was crazy. Last game of the regular season. Bedrock U needs a 13 point win to edge the Bisons out of the final playoff berth. Leading by 20, they fumble on the last play, the Bisons recover for a touchdown, and a 2-point convert made it a 12 point loss, and a playoff berth for the Herd.
On this peculiar CW weekend, this was the feature game of the night. However, it was far from a nail-biter. Captain Hook(er) scored his 5th to bring the Bisons to a 1-1 tie, and Josh Paulhus scored his 2nd to make pull the Bisons to within 4-2. An empty-netter sealed the deal.
This illustrates the gap in the CW. The Bisons may well be the #6 team, and the Bluegars the #5 team. Yet the gulf between the top 5 and bottom 4 continues to be large.

I saw a bit of this one. The Family Guys had a good 1st period, tied 2-2 and shots 11-9 in favour of the T-irds. Eventually, though, UBC took charge and dominated this game. Game stories for the Friday and Saturday games are linked.

Goal: TWU: Audet L (7 shots, 6 saves); Sommer (25 shots, 21 saves); Sask: Ross (23 shots, 23 saves)
Holy Trinity put up a good fight. They took 26 penalty minutes, and Sask scored twice on the PP. That’s back-to-back shutouts by Roddy Ross for the Banjo-Mutts. Sad to say, but even when the Spartans are at their best, they are a couple of levels down from Sask.

October 27, 2023: BISONS EDGED BY BLUEGARS
MANITOBA BISONS 2
Links:
➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW
➤ Game reports: LeagueStat : CW
➤ UofM: MHKY: Bisons fall to Cougars 4-2 in heartbreaker (with boxscore)
➤ MRU: Team Website
Quick Summary
MRU: R. Holmes (06:41 2nd), C. Bouchard (10:10 3rd), J. Senkoe (12:48 3rd), R. Holmes (19:30 3rd)
Man: T. Apetagon (16:41 2nd), C. Veloso (04:55 3rd)
Goal: MRU: Farkas (22 shots, 20 saves); Man: Thronton (37 shots, 34 saves)
The Bisons had a strong performance in this one. They were again limited to five defencemen. On the other hand, the Bluegars had some injured forwards and played some defencemen up front. I’d much rather play with too many, rather than too few, defencemen. The last time the Bisons finished first they played half the season with 8 or defencemen in their line-up. Their 4th line of defencemen was effective. They had a plus-minus of one goal scored and one goal allowed, IIRC, which is pretty good for a 4th line.
Here’s how they lined up:
MANITOBA:
Goal:
30 Thornton (34 Hawryluk)
Defence:
16 Hartje - 5 Casey
8 Toth - 4 Malchuk
25 Calder
Forwards:
20 Apetagon - 18 Hooker - 21 Basarab
29 King - 9 Thiessen - 17 Veloso
10 Paulhus - 19 Arpin - 11 Ostir
14 Zimmerman - 28 Behun - 12 Trimble - 26 Boucher
Scratches:
G: 1 Harkness
6 Fry - 24 Wareham - 27 Gottfried
F: 13 Sutter - 23 Fawkes
MOUNT ROYAL:
Goal:
31 Farkas (35 Sims)
Defence:
25 Aquilon - 21 Hanus
4 Smythe - 16 Blake
5 Ladyman - 2 Walker
Forwards:
10 Holmes - 27 Senkoe - 12 Bouchard
3 Gould 11 Martens - 22 Hakim
17 Kernaghan - 8 Moe - 18 Stevenson
28 Rawji - 20 Zandee - 19 Miliken
Scratches:
G: 33 Wray
none
F: 9 Hiemstra - 13 Standen - 24 Rowland - 26 Englot
The Bisons held a 2-1 lead in the 3rd period and looked like they could win this one. The Bluegars tied it on a controversial PP goal mid-way through the 3rd, and added the go-ahead goal a couple minutes later. An empty-netter put it away for MRU.
I re-watched that 2nd MRU goal on CWTV, and the scorer was definitely in the crease with both skates and stopped Thornton from being able to dive on the puck. Maybe the Bisons have a break coming their way on Saturday afternoon.
Tony Apetagon scored on a deflection.

Goal: UBC: Lane (16 shots, 14 saves); MacU: Abel (45 shots, 40 saves)
The T-irds dominated the stats line in this one. It was almost over when I go home from the Bison game, so I watched the end of the Sask v TWU game instead. It would be hard to find odds against a UBC sweep.

I saw the ending of this one, and what I saw was the Banjo-Mutts passing it around with Holy Trinity giving chase. That said, at the very ending it looked like the Spartans broke the shutout. Where is the video review when you need it? A split of this series would shock me.

The Bisons never trailed this one until the last two minutes. They just killed a penalty and then had a disaster of a give-away in front of their own net. An empty-netter sealed the deal. It was an evening of games between Edmontown and Winnipeg teams. Thankfully, the Jets came back to beat the Greasers in overtime. Watch the highlights of that one!
