  1. What made Weber a realistic shot was the questionable financial situation the Preds were in combined with the fact that you could realistically afford to sign him at the maximum level contract. In order to poach Carlson or Subban you'd have to offer a contract way outside of their realistic value on the market, otherwise you have to expect that both of their teams, who aren't suffering money issues like the Preds were, will match. It's not realistic to expect that offering a sheet on either of those guys will lead to actually getting them unless Howson is suddenly hired by their clubs or one of the GMs suffers an aneurism in the middle of signing the matching offer sheet alone in a cold war bunker with a door that has a week long time release that can only be interrupted from the inside, or unless the Flyers make a salary offer so brain dead that it makes the Scott Gomez deal look like pure genius, and even that's not a guarantee.

you bring up a good point..the Flyers would probably have to overpay for Carlson or Subban...which leads us back to why didn't Homer just outbid Tampa for Carle?

I never was a huge fan of Carle but with the limited available talent in the market this is turning into a huge mistake by Homer

  2. Recent conversations have me curious... If you're Holmgren, who do you put where in your defense and why? Short term plan? Long term? Does it matter? Actively seeking FA's or trades? What would YOU do?

Carlson and Subban are still both RFA's I think you have to go after one of these guys...

    Coby/Kimmo

    Grossman/ Carlson or Subban

    Schenn/ Gus or MAB

I still think our goal tending is still too weak to be competitive anyway..

  3. He took less money to stay a Flyer, likely for the rest of his career. Agents can go screw themselves. They don't speak for players, they speak for themselves. Hundreds of players would kill to be "accpeting less" and be a Flyer.

    What a joke.

not to mention Hartnell has already made a ton of money playing for the Flyers...the guy financially is set..glad he's staying a Flyer..

  4. Not seeing this anywhere (probably on Twitter or something) but my friend is telling me Simmonds is working on a 6 year extension with a $4 mil cap hit.

Not a bad cap hit especially if he continues to develop some more, I'm a big fan of Simmonds and what he brings to the table every night. We'll see if this actually happens though.

I agree this is a great signing...Simmonds has quickly become one of my fav Flyers..brings alot to the table...

  5. How could I forget?

Clarkie's getting old, he won't be with us forever. People should pay some respects while they still can.

My eldest sister has the same B-day as Clarke, so it's an easy one to remember.

cmon with modern medicine we could build robotic parts for Clarke and get him back on the ice..

  6. It times like this we need guys to step up..Coburn needs to finally reach his potential and take on more of a leadership role and log more minutes..

Luke Schenn who knows maybe we have the next Adam Foote or maybe the next bust..

Gus looked promising..he could potentially fill in for Carle..

MAB looked promising also but seemed to run out of gas towards the end of the year..

Overall the d has alot of question marks...and it doesn't help our goaltending sucks..

  7. 1) Yandle is not "available" - he is under contract

    2) Yandle just had his third 40+ point season in a row (and hit 59 in 10-11)

    3) Yandle runs the PP on a team that just got to the WC Finals

    4) Yandle hasn't been a "minus" player for four years and is a +17 for his career

I'm not sure I would call Yandle "overpaid" at $5.25M for the next four years (aside from the general feeling that all players are generally overpaid) - if Matt Carle can get $5.5M with one 40-point season in the past three and not running the Flyers PP... In fact, Yandle has more consecutive 40+ point seasons than Carle has career 40+ point seasons.

Carle is the "overpaid" one in this situation. Not Yandle.

And it is amusing that the Same People who are the ones "overpaying" all of these guys ALL THE TIME are the ones who are "locking them out" for accepting the deals that the owners have offered them...

    somebody needs a hug..

  8. I think the article below is a good analysis. I'd put myself in this camp.

    http://sports.yahoo....00998--nhl.html

Here are a couple of observations from the article:

"This is a team built to last. Sure, the goaltending of Ilya Bryzgalov was more roller-coaster than any fan would have liked, but the Flyers still boast an impressive array of weapons up front, from the trio of kids mentioned prior to Danny Briere, Claude Giroux and Scott Hartnell."

"The bizarre thing is the Flyers have still managed to churn out great young players lately. Brayden Schenn was on the cover of Future Watch, while still property of the L.A. Kings, before the Mike Richards trade. Couturier never made the issue because he went straight from the draft to the NHL – thanks to the high selection Holmgren garnered in the Jeff Carter deal with Columbus. And Read was signed as a college free agent out of Bemidji State, playing 11 games with Adirondack after his year in Minnesota was finished, then jumping right up to the Flyers for his stellar 47-point freshman campaign. So the Flyers can find talent – and they should hold on to it."

I have an uncanny eye for strippers...there always taking my dollar bills..

  9. We send Voracek, Cousins, Marc Andre Bourdon and #1 and #3 to Ducks

For Bobby Ryan and Luca Sbisa.

Sbisa's stats last year were similar to Mezaros, and still only 22 years old at 6-2 210 lbs

We all know Flyers like to get former players

Bobby Ryan at 25 has had 4 years of 30 goals or more

I think this is a fair deal, if not Cousins I'm happy to include Read

how does this fix our dcorp? I like Sbisa but at best he's a 5/6 dman..we need a top 4 guy to log some minutes...

  10. Is Yandle of the block right now? He is over a million less than Jaybo with a manageable 5.25, which is less than Carle got, for 4 years. If we have to give up something promising, and I would rather not, but if they do, do it for Yandle.

why does it seem like anymore every guy available is overrated and going to be overpaid? there is no suprise why the NHL will lockout..

  11. Not trying to be negative but....

The Olympics are over... August is always a bad month for hockey news... A lockout is all but assured at this point... The Flyers D-corps continues to spiral out of control... OH, in that case maybe a lockout isn't so bad...

Ahh, sorry guys... Anyone have some good news??? Probably just depressed this morning, so sorry....

and we have the worst goalie tandem in the NHL...

  12. So, while you're against paying the young up and coming Voracek 4 mil a year, you are in favor of paying the overpriced Jbo 6.6 mil a year?

I don't follow your logic here. I'd rather see what Bourdon and Gus and Manning can bring to the table.

It's simple Grump guys like Vorecek are a dime a dozen..puck moving dmen are rare and in high demand..

  13. I don't know that I'd say that Homer has an unusually keen eye for talent. I think what separates him from a lot of other GMs is his willingness to take chances. Couturier was widely predicted to be the top pick in the draft until he got sick. Everyone recognized the talent, they were just afraid to take the chance. Same deal with Giroux, everyone saw the talent but most thought he was too small. Homer has the guts of a burglar, as we've clearly seen this off-season. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But the reality is, if you look at the Flyers key players a lot of them came from somewhere else. I'm sure that's at least partly because the Flyers tend not to get high draft picks, but still, if Homer was really some kind of genius at spotting talent I think we would see more home grown players in key roles.

I agree Homer is a gambling man and sometimes it pays off and sometimes we get hosed like Eminger deal..
