  1. I'd almost be inclined to sign Gagne before Penner. Gagne is probably cheaper and at least can back check every now and again.

Any news on Gagne? Last I heard he was willing to take a pay cut to stay in town. I'd like to see him back next season maybe a 1 or 2 years deal at $2M.

  2. I'd rather keep Coots in-house and trade someone like Read. Read has more offensive upside than Coots (right now) and is still young enough to make him a good value. I want to hold on to players like Coots because they take time to develop and I think making trades for quick fixes are what got the Flyers into the situation they are in right now.

Let's say they get Nurse. Is the team that much better right away? I don't see that one move doing much for us. You also end up losing offense in the form of Read and/or Coots and draft picks. I'd rather buyout Briere (Bryz also) and give Coots some time on a better line. Bring up McGinn and let the young guys play next year. It takes time to build a cup winning team and I think it is possible to accomplish this if these players are given the time to develop here (rather than somewhere else).

  3. @doom88

I was one of those disagreeing on throwing Bob an offer sheet in that other thread. I echo alot of the opinions against it by others in this thread. The Flyers already look pretty foolish with the moves they have made over the last couple of years. This would just add to the embarrassment.

I do believe such things have a negative effect on your franchise long term. We would often refer to the Leafs as the Laughs. I don't want to see the Flyers thought of in that light.

  4. I'm a big fan of wellwood. Don't understand why he wan't a regular for the flyers. he is PERFECT for lavy's system. Incredible speed, one of the better forecheckers I've seen.

I never understood why we haven't seen more of him under Lavy. He seems to fit the mold of what Lavy is looking for. I hope he overcomes this injury and we see him skating again.

  5. Ignoring the fact we had the player, why not? RFA Vezina winner.

I don't care if other teams are laughing as long as the Flyers beat them. I mean, the Flyers already have Bryz signed to an abomination of a contract, so I highly doubt embarassment is a factor anyway.

I agree in that as long as the Flyers are winning I could care less what other teams think. I do think these "embarrassments" add up over time in the minds of players and may make it difficult to lure talent to the team.

I don't think they will try another offer sheet so soon after what happened with Weber. Even if they did I am sure Columbus would match. I think they know what they have in Bob and I doubt they will give up on him as easily as the Flyers did.

  6. in true Homer style the following is what would happen. Homer says no to the Yotes' offer and drafts......wait for it.....Sean Monahan...ignoring Mackinnon and Nurse, and at the same time every Flyers fan's heads will explode. Homer will then trade Coots, Laughton, our 1st round next year and a 2nd round pick (of course) for Yandle and a 3rd rounder. Bryz get's bought out along with Briere, but Mason signs a 6 year NMC deal.....oh yeah, and Leighton will back him up.

This may be the scariest post I have read on this site because it reads like a classic Flyers move.

Btw am I the only one who does not want to trade Couts? NHL proven first round draft picks don't grow on trees. He's only 20 and isn't even done growing yet. I think he is going to be a heck of a player and we should hold onto him. I think the best move is to build on this youth and wait. We aren't winning a cup any time soon so why mortgage away the future? Give this group 2-3 seasons together and build around them.

  7. what are you talking about? you "hope that Mason is not the answer but there's more value in Mason"???????

    what does that even mean?

the bottom line is: who gives us the best chance to succeed and win a Cup. Mason is Terrible, he might be the worst goalie in the league. Bryz is not perfect but he is is much better than Mason and if he actually was able to take a game or two off, his stats and play would be much better. I don't care who you are, you can't be expected to play EVERY game and not get worn down.

    Who has more value?

Bryz with his .899 at $5.6M cap hit or

Mason with his .899 at $2.9M cap hit

For the same output I would rather pay less. Thus there is more value in Mason at the moment. Bryz is marginally better than Mason and he is twice as expensive. I see Mason as a backup but even in that role he is more valuable than our current starter.

I never said either would win us a cup. The organization traded away a candidate franchise goal tender to Columbus last summer. Frankly those don't grow on trees.

  8. I don't believe our situation looks bleak on paper. With the right moves this team can be turned around. The issue is that as an organization the Flyers have shown no patience. The team trades away prospects and picks in an effort to "win now". If they were to sit back and allow these players to stick together and learn from their ups and downs the Flyers would be a better team. I don't have faith in the GM or (more precisely) the owner to be patient.

How many prospects do they have to trade away before they realize this? Cooter might not be a Crosby or a Malkin but he IS a young and proven NHL talent with lots of potential. There are alot of draft busts around the league and Coots definitely is not one of them. I'd rather see the team keep a player like that and foster him in our organization that trade him away for a quick fix.
