Question about Marc Savard

Question about Boston Bruins former player Marc Savard.

I saw the Bruins at Flyers game Saturday afternoon 1/25/14 and they listed the scratches and Marc Savard with listed in the Boston scratches.

My question is why is he listed?  He clearly will never play hockey again with Boston or any other team due to concussions.

So what is his role with the Boston Bruins these days?

Does he help out with coaching? conditions? with practices? Or do they pay him for doing nothing other than the player contract he signed?

I assume they still have to pay him something of a pro-rated contract even though he is not a roster player.

Someone please shed some light on this for me.  Thanks.

Savard is on LTIR which is why you still see him listed on the roster during game days.  Thus he receives full value for his contract until it ends in two years.

I saw on twitter where he and his wife just welcomed a new baby daughter. I had read previously that he had interest in coaching in the OHL.  He has in the past helped coach his sons peewee team.

My editorial:

Man, you talk about a bust desicion by the Bruins to sign a small injury prone guy like him to whatever contract length and price that they did back whenever and then he goes down injured never to play again.

I disagree in paying him full contract value and term.

I say the contract should be honored in full if you are actively playing and producing for the team. If you go down injured you get half or a prorated value AND you must stay on within the Boston organization and help with the team in a way they designate for the rest of teh contract term - whether it be coaching, practices, conditioning, scouting, front office, something.  Paying him and getting nothing is not right or fair to the salary cap and organization money overall.  IMHO.
