  1. The STH townhall was very eye opening to me that the mentality is that we just need to get to the playoffs and see what happens.  This was an Organ-I-zation wide mentality too it is not just Homer.  Even Hexy said as much.  I think that there approach is to just get in the playoffs and see what kind of tweaks they can make along the way.  While I do believe there is luck involved in winning I think that they are relying too much on this notion and that they could do more to put themselves in the best position possible to minimize the impact of "luck".  radoran noticed this in the writeup that we put together and was not at all pleased with their "strategy" I was surprised that he was the only 1 to comment on this.

Nevertheless I think that this is one of the root problems with and why the Flyers do what they do.  They figure as long as they get in they have a chance so they just worry about this year now and future years later.

Getting to the playoffs = $$$  It *is* a business, after all.

  2. am i the only one who HASN'T given up on Mez? he's 27 FCOL! yes, when he's healthy, he's great. and yes, he's had a bad run of injuries. BUT, IF he can stay healthy for a season and play as he's capable... he's better than any trade for a D man that we could realistically make. in other words, i think the upside to keeping him is much greater than the downside. maybe it is just me though.

Nope.  I am in agreement with this line of thinking.

  3. I hope I am wrong, but I think he will re-injured the shoulder again.

I hope you're wrong, too.  It wouldn't be the first person to suffer repetitive shoulder injuries.  Conversely, there is precedent for recovering and staying healthy, too.  Being this is Negadelphia -- and things do often seem to go sour since the mid- to late-80's (depending upon what sport you follow, but especially the bright spots in Flyers history since then), there is reason to be leery about him being 100% this year.  At the same time, I would not be surprised if he played 60+ games.  It's fun not being able to decide whether to be optimistic or pessimistic!

  4. No big deal.  Nobody is trading for Mez until they see him play some.  In addition, my guess is that the Flyers would like to make it through camp, or at least most of it injury free, prior to dealing any defenseman.

In addition, I don't think Mez is necessarily the guy who gets moved.  Coburn and Grossmann could also be on the list.

I hate to say it (because I just received his jersey as a present last year and was able to get it signed at the STH Meet the Players Night), but I think Grossmann is the guy they're going to shop most: Not as mobile as either and Meszaros can do most of what Grossmann does.

  5. There is no need to rush the kid, but if he looks better at camp than what most of us expect, than don't be surprised if he gets the first 10 games.  Another year or two in junior isn't going to hurt him.  Chara spent a year after the draft in the Canadian junior program.  Then split a couple of seasons in the AHL/NHL before coming full time to the Isles.  Did that hurt him?  No.  Most important thing to remember right now with the kid is he needs to earn what we give him.

    Great post.

  6. Actually, his exact quote, as I recall it, was "We didn't tell him to go get cancer".

    Pretty despicable either way...

I think the oddest part in all of this is that the fans have held this grudge even longer than Roger Neilson did.  Roger let this go, why does it have to be brought up?

Not saying it wasn't a dumb thing to say -- it was.  Clarkie, I think, is awkward when showing emotions about the things going on behind the scenes.  I do wonder if he ever tried to clarify his statement or if that was lost in the cacophony of outrage afterward.  I honestly cannot remember.

@AlaskaFlyerFan may remember my definition of Clarke's flip-flopping on subjects from our ESPN days (when Clarke would say one thing then do another): Alternacalendrical syndrome.  His position on subjects changed with the flipping of the daily desk calendar sheets.

  7.   As per usual, Metzler covered this story with much more depth than the downtrodden Bleacher Report folks!

Non drafted invitees Stephen Harper and Andrew Ryan should be fun to watch. I remember Ryan playing a depth role on the eventual Memorial Cup Champion Halifax squad. Decent size and skating, he will be one to watch. Possible the Flyers found a few diamonds in the rough here.

When something Flyers-related happens, go to Meltzer.  Then go to the other sites and point and laugh.  ;)

  8. @Flyskippy  That Carter miss on the glaring open net haunts me to this day. Things could have been so different had he buried that. Regarding Jeff, I slowly evolved from basic hero worship, to indifference... to just wanting him gone. He did not play "Flyers hockey" in my estimation. There was never much of a element of desperation to his game. He tried to get by on his scoring prowess, but I always wanted more effort from Jeff, especially on the forecheck. He always seemed to do just enough to not get vilified, just enough positioning on defense so it could be said he cared, but in the end, it was the bare minimum he needed, he gave the illusion of caring, without really getting his nose dirty.

I've always said, money players, they bury that missed shot. The fact he missed, and the way he did it, it kinda broke the camels back for me.

"Look, we want you to express yourself, ok? If you think the bare minimum is enough, then ok. But some people choose to wear more and we encourage that, ok? You do want to express yourself, don't you?"

  9. Do you remember that season? That was a .500 team that didn't even qualify for a PO spot until the last day of the season. They barely made the POs, let alone the cup. Once they made it in, then they decided they wanted to play, got lucky with a hot goalie, but the clock struck midnight right at the worst possible moment. They were the definition of lazy and talented at the same time. I'm glad that core is gone. Their approach to the game is completely wrong.

I wonder where that team would have ended up if Emery's hip had not been injured/necrotic.  They had a pretty good October into November before dropping around Thanksgiving, costing Stevens his job.

  10. Look, I'll put this into somewhat strained perspective.

Iraq and Afghanistan were ridiculously stupid decisions. The fact that we will be "out" of both of them by the end of next year doesn't change that.

And I don't want the guy who made those stupid decisions in a position to make them again.

And, no, there is no guarantee that the next guy will do better. He might, for example, invade Syria.

I have many times noted that Homer has stumbled and bumbled his way into a notbad - if not "good" - situation at this point.

I'd just prefer not to have a GM that relies on stumbling and bumbling to arrive at the same place the team was at five years ago.

Except for the whole "let the extremists come after Americans who are trained and ready to fight back" in those two countries instead of sitting on our thumbs and letting them continue to come to us (that is, bomb/shoot civilians) in the States bit.  I'll take my USMC brother's opinion over that of the average Joe, thank you.

  11. NRH, I don't gang up on people, I type what I think. You said they were crap in the playoffs, then changed in the face of facts. I mentioned Lappy as an example of a player who had immeasurable contributions, albeit doesn't light up a basic stat sheet.

If you feel people are teaming up against you, either you're wrong, or need more proof and courage. Crying about anyone needing reinforcements is bs and you know it.

If I recall correctly, Richards needed surgery immediately after the series, and was asked to be more of a checker than scorer.

If Carter doesn't miss that shot though...

It's been said that hitting Niemi in the mask is a product of toilet-training with a floating Cheerio.  All that open net and doink! into the mask.

Let's face it...unless Laviolette finally realizes you have to play TEAM defence to win, these guys don't stand a chance.

I think Lavi realized it -- albeit too late -- last season when they won 10 of their last 15.  Once he stopped trying to play defensemen in roles they could not fill (Coburn is not Matt Carle and cannot be, for example) and closed the gap between the forwards and defense, they got a lot better.  That's with a depleted D corps, too.  If they go with the same defensive scheme with their regular 6, they can make some noise and make the playoffs.  I have no doubts.  This team has a 2007-08 sort of "feel" to it.
