Sadly Lindstrom will probably be top 5 ...there is no way he drops to #12

Most experts have Iginla going to Calgary where his dad played.  If the Flyers truly covet him, then they might have to trade up in order to draft him.  Again ...unless there is a HUGE run on D-men, I see the Flyers just missing out on Iginla.

I know that I'm in the minority, but why not see what someone would give for pick 12? For instance, say Dallas came knocking and they were "hey, we really like someone, but they won't be there when we draft. We're willing to build a package around our first, Mavrik Bourque and Christian Kyrou to move up." I think that's something that should be considered, especially if the Flyers plan on using Laughton and the Florida first to move up (apparently they're targeting Buffalo). So, you'd be looking at pick 11, Mavrik Bourque, Christian Kyrou and the Dallas 1st (probably 31 - 32). That's not a bad haul.

In the end, I know that I want one of the centers (Catton, Helenius, Iginla) or Yakemchuk, if they don't move. But, it's food for thought.

  2. I'm torn on this one. I'd love to be someone that wins, but at the same time, there are times when you have to tear it down because either you didn't win within your window, your team simply isn't constructed to win or your franchise is stuck in a perpetual state of mediocrity (think the Flyers and their one year in the playoffs, one year out, rinse and repeat).

  3. So, with regards to the draft, if none of the three centers are there and if Yakemchuk and Silayev are gone, how many would be comfortable if they reached slightly for Michael Hage? He's expected to go 16th/17th, so not a real huge drop. Great skill, great physical attributes and great character to endure through the year he had. He's going to go to a really good hockey program in Michigan, so he's going to be coached well when he arrives.

It's also a franchise that is more concerned with making the playoffs than developing players.

    Sound familiar?

Fair enough. At the same time, in the outgoing interviews, players said if he remains then they want out. He clearly made enemies in the locker room and nobody went to bat for him when he got fired. I'm not sure he'll work in the NHL again in a head coach capacity. I think he'll return to the NCAA. Some just can't coach at the NHL level. He clearly has issues.

How about going after a guy like Shane Wright? He's 20, still potential to be a 1C even though he dropped a little in his draft year and is taking his time developing. What's the word on him, can he be lured away from Seattle or are they going all in on him?

I'd love Shane Wright. The guy is dripping in talent. I'm thinking with the 'tard gone in Seattle, the next coach will be more inclined to get Wright into the lineup and play him more. That was definitely a Dave thing not playing him, similar to what he did with Konecny because Konecny wasn't veteran enough. I'm sure Francis is going to basically tell the next coach that they have to give Wright playing time because he was the first ever franchise pick and that they need to start seeing a return on the investment.

If it's true that the Sabres are looking at Scott Laughton and if the Flyers are looking for a center prospect, Jiri Kulich or Noah Ostlund would also be ideal, especially Kulich. He's going to be a real good one.

It would be so stupid, I can see us doing it.

Right?!?!? I mean, the old boys club are all senior advisors and you know that they'd be chomping at the bit for something like this. They'd be siding with Tortorella and telling Helferty that Torts could fix him and guys like Marner don't come along very often. And it's funny that Marner is a perimeter player, especially because he's so good defensively.

  7. I'm not sure if anyone reads any of the Philadelphia publications, but Johnathan Bailey posted an article pleading with the Flyers to not trade for Mitch Marner. Considering that there has been no outward talks about the flyers being a suitor, I found it interesting that the Flyers are attached to Marner. I know there have been little tidbits in the past about Philadelphia and Marner (I read one trade rumour about Marner for Provorov and them Marner, Woll and Lilegren for Konecny and Hart), but this seems like there is serious smoke there. If they are looking at Marner, one of those firsts are going. Personally, I hope they avoid Marner (I like him, but think he's a bad fit in Toronto) and continue rebuilding. However, Tortorella and his comments about getting more talent are starting to ring loudly in that they're looking to trade. I could only imagine what Marner would cost.....

I wouldn't be surprised if Calgary takes Iginla, he's ranked right around their pick.

Celebrini isn't generational...neither is Bedard or Matthews. Think Jonathan Toews in his prime...that's Celebrini. I guy you can count on shorthanded, 5 on 5 or PP. A great 200 foot player.

I got to thinking about that and it wouldn't surprise me if Tij Iginla didn't want to go to Calgary because of his dad's legacy. Ridly Greig said he didn't want to go to Philadelphia because of his dad being part of the organization. It's very possible Iginla might tell Conroy and his dad that he doesn't want to be drafted by them.

He was ranked as the 1st overall pick the previous 2 years leading up to the draft.

My older sister went to university in Peterborough and she said that the Petes were the hardest ticket because of Ricci. He was borderline God like there.

I remember the Flyers and other teams really liked Jags skill and size but were afraid of  problems getting him out of Eastern Europe, then the Soviet Union collapsed  and he came over pretty easily. The Flyers went the safe route with Ricci ,who was really just a third line center. Imagine if we had drafted Jagr and we drafted Forsberg the following year, if we kept them and didn’t trade for Lindros , what a great combo that would have been .

Ricci was only a third line center because that was where the clubs used him. Ricci was ridiculously skilled, but none of the organizations he went to bothered developing his skill. All these organizations wasted him because he was a "two-way" player. That's why I hope the Flyers get away from drafting two way players and just draft offensively gifted players. It's too easy for a coach to put them in that role and never bother developing the rest of their game. That's what happened with Ricci.

They need a centre, but I also hope they don't do something stupid just to get A centre. If Michkov has to wait for a true #1 centre, then so be it. Better than rushing into something we're going to regret....

I don't think Necas would be stupid, especially if it's a straight up swap for Farabee. I'm wondering if this would also cause a wholesale of changes. For instance, could we see not just Farabee, but possibly Frost and Brink also get moved?

I get that you're not necessarily saying that he will be like Mark Stone, but I don't think he'll be close, to be honest. Stone has been a lot more productive at every level of hockey. I dunno... I see Foerster as a 0.5ish PPG game player.

Essentially, we agree. I just think it's really far from Mark Stone.

I see Foerster as a more well rounded JvR. Not quite as good a skater as JvR, but better all around player.

  13. I'm fine with giving Drysdale a year to heal up. Let him come back fully 100%, not just healed from the surgery. I'm wondering if teams rush guys back because it's "oh the surgery is healed up, they're ready to go" instead of "the surgery is healed, but now we need to get them 100% game shape ready." Let Drysdale get that surgery and then don't let him back on the ice with the team until he's 100% game shape ready.

I can't tell if with the "size and meanness" you're being facetious or if you really are Bobby Clarke.

If said meanie person first has skill, I'm fine, but mean/size vs  skill, this club has got to start acquiring skill.

Oh, there's plenty of skill with Yakemchuk and Elick. Yakemchuk is a 30 goal, 70 point defenseman in the WHL who just happens to be mean and physical.

As for Elick, his skill is that he's a premier shutdown defenseman who can handle the puck capably. Think beast mode Braydon Coburn, but beast mode 100% of the time. And yes, he's also mean and physical.

  15. I've thought about this previously and I'm going with size and meanness elements that are going to be needed. At 12, I'm hoping that Carter Yakemchuk is available. If he's not, then one of Iginla, Catton or Helenius is fine. With the Florida pick, Charlie Elick. This clun needs some serious meanness in the lineup.

In terms of round 2, Yegor Surin from Russia would be my choice.

After he got traded there were stories about Provorov's "blame others" thing, how it was out of control and he was genuinely disliked around the room. I can understand some of Provorov's frustration with the Flyers; the team was a hot mess for much of his time in the O&B. But as a teammate (if the stories are true) he can be quite an a-hole.

That works have been nipped in the bud through proper development. The entitlement and blame game only came during his tenure in Philadelphia. Sad really. Those four coaches did him no favours at all.

  17. Provorov was rated ahead of Rantanen his draft year. Provorov was the right pick at the time. The problem with Provorov was development (there's that d word again). Hakstol, Gordon, Vigneault and Yeo never bothered correcting the flaws in his game. They just continually threw him out on the ice, regardless. There was a different set of rules for Ivan when compared to everyone else.

By the time Tortorella and Shaw came to town, it was too late. Provorov was basically the defenseman he is and he wasn't changing his game for anyone, regardless. This franchise ruined what should have EASILY been a number one defensemen for the club. I'm not saying Provorov isn't blameless (his refusal to change his game and to blame others for his shortcomings), but he was a product of his development. Another player the Flyers managed to ruin. That one really hurt.

Disappointed Kolosov isn't getting the start. No reason to even be playing Petersen.

Flyers do know there is nothing to be gained by tanking in the AHL right?

This is that stupid mentality that you have to 'earn' your spot and that veterans are ALWAYS given the preferential treatment. It's a ****** joke. Another reason that Puckhead needs to go. He knows nothing of player development.

To answer the thread's title question I'd say trading Konecny means a more thorough rebuild is underway. I never thought they'd consider trading him. He's the heartbeat and the energizer for the Flyers. But after the way the season ended maybe Jones/Briere are re-thinking their strategy. Trading TK is the Flyers admitting "building a Cup contender will take longer than we thought."

And then I watched Briere's exit presser.... never mind. They're not re-thinking anything...Laughton is a Flyers Lifer, TK too. I doubt Briere makes any hockey trades this summer. Maybe a buyout or a mercy trade for Atkinson...maybe Ristolainen gets dumped somehow somewhere...but no hockey trades. Briere sounds perfectly content to let things roll the way they are now going into next season.

I'm an advocate of tearing the thing back to the studs and rebuilding, but I also get the idea that you have to have some sort of structure in place when you're bringing in players. A lot of times, you just can't have someone be fed to the wolves and hope they can fend for themselves.

After watching the press conference, what I came away with is that they haven't decided what's next with regards to the rebuild. They gave the generic answers that I expected (i.e. "nobody expected this from us", "we need to add more talent", "not at a point to give up young talent for veterans", etc....They heaped praise on a few people and then just did the typical lip service non-playoff teams give.

To me, everything depends on what happens at the draft. That's going to be the epicenter of their off-season plans. They've given no real morsels on what they plan on doing at the draft. Cap management is going to have to be a must though. They need to lose some salary, so I think that might get some priority there. For instance, if they move Atkinson and say they have to take on a bad contract, are they willing to take on a lesser deal, but with more years? That's the type of deal I'm expecting Briere to make.
